    SKYPE SALE LARGEST TRANSACTION IN 2009

    EBAY SELLS SKYPE; SHANDA TO LIST G AMES UNITAlmost four years to the day of announcing the acquisit ion of Skype, eBay announced last week that it had sold 65%of its Skype unit to a group of private equity investors, led by Silver Lake Partners, for $1.9 bil l ion in cash and a $125mill ion note. eBay had acquired Skype for over $4 bil l ion in September 2005. Following the successful IPO of SohusChangyou unit in April (+155% since IPO), Shanda announced the proposed $800 mill ion IPO of its Shanda Gamesunit. Shanda Games generates the vast majority of its revenue from the sale of virtual goods and is highly profitable(31% net profit margin 1H/09).

    Slow start to financing activity for new school year: With only f ive financing transactions to start September, thelargest transaction thus far is the $5 mill ion financing for YuMe (Advertising). The total for September so far is just$12.2 mill ion, averaging $2.4 mill ion per f inancing. Total capital raised in August was $208.5 mill ion, averaging $7.7mill ion (27 deals), July on 35 transactions was $191.4 mill ion, averaging $5.5 mill ion, and June (42 deals) was $204.7

    mill ion (averaging $4.9 mill ion).

    A mixed price performance week: Twenty-seven of the companies in our universe had positive stock priceperformances over the past week (for stocks with prices greater than $1) (Figure 6), with 21 companies showingnegative returns on the week. DigitalTown (OTCBB:DGTW) led the group with a 25.0% return, while Cyberplex(TSX:CX) had the worst return, dropping 14.8% in the week.

    Advertising remains the most active sector: Advertising related companies continue to see the most activity by numof transactions (10), followed by the Gaming sector (seven transactions) and the Social Network sector, also with setransactions (Figure 4). The $2.0 bil l ion acquisit ion of Skype skews the dollars transacted to the SMS/Voice segment.
