The West Essex Directory is published bi-monthly by E4 Publishing. Our distribution covers most of Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. We deliver to half of each area one month, and the other half of each area the following month (approximately 7,500 per month, or around 15,000 in a two month distribution).

Printed on FSC accredited paper. For every tree felled significantly more are planted.

Vegetable based inks are used throughout, which are far more environmentally friendly than oil based inks. Waste paper from the printing and

binding process is recycled and goes back into providing pulp for recycled paper products.

W elcome to the May and June edition of The

West Essex Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory. We may owe you all some sort of an apology. I have this vague notion that, in my previ-ous letter, I was banging on about Spring coming, and I

probably went on about flowers and blossom, warm breezes and stuff like that. I might even have waxed lyrical about a delphinium. I don’t know. It was ages

ago. Well, that whole bit about Spring was insensitive in me, I know. Should have hedged my bets. Played it safe. Should have said something that was more cer-tain, like some upsets for Tottenham.

So I’m saying nothing about the coming months. They may be hot, cold, dry, wet. There might be volcanos in Epping for all that I know. A tsunami might rush down the Roding. I shall refer, in future, to the past.

So, Spring, eh? That was cold and wet, wasn’t it?

H umans have been trying to cross the Thames for millennia. This may seem an exaggeration, but, for those of you who

have queued at Dartford, you’ll know that it’s no overstatement. I was certainly stuck there for a thousand years once.

The earliest evidence of any bridge across the Thames hints at a primitive wooden bridge at Vaux-hall in about 1600BC. Romans subsequently con-structed pontoon bridges across the river, but when the Romans left London, in the 5th century, their bridges slowly fell into disrepair and London itself

was largely abandoned. The Saxons began to repopu-late the area in retreat from invading Danes, and London Bridge may have been reconstructed to aid their flight. By 1014, the Danes controlled both sides of the river, in the City of London and at Southwark. An ally of Ethelred the Unready is believed to have destroyed the bridge to divide the Danish forces. The famous timber bridge, familiar in historic prints, was finished in 1163.

Over the centuries, more bridges were built. Then, when there were quite a lot of these bridges spanning the river, some bloke stood by the Thames

at Wapping, looked across to Rotherhithe, and felt a sudden urge to dig 23 metres down, burrow through the mud for 400 metres, and come out at the other side. Takes all sorts. Can’t say it’s an urge I feel very often. I get dizzy doing the gardening. But the Thames Tunnel was created between 1825 and 1843 to con-nect the expanding docks, the first tunnel built beneath a naviga-ble river.

Then some more tunnels were built, and some more bridges. It seems to be some instinct, as with those who must climb mountains, that when we see a river we have to find new ways across. Given all of which, it seems amazing to me that it is only in the last year that they finally got round to doing the obvious thing.

First, build giant pylons either side of the river, linking Silvertown with the O2 Arena, formerly known as The Dome, although I’ve heard it called less kind things. Then link the pylons with 1.1km of cable. Then dangle cabins across that will cross the river at a height of about 90 metres. Eh voila. You’ve got yourself a cable car crossing. And don’t those Romans look silly now with their pontoons.

The Emirates Air Line, to give it its proper title, opened on 28th June 2012, and has carried almost 2 million people. The crossing takes 10 minutes (5 minutes during the rush hour) and each cabin carries 10 people, and they are spaced at about 30 seconds.

Being naturally cautious, and having some cynicism about technology, I decided to let the 2 million peo-ple test it out for safety before I eventually went on it (or took the flight, as we are supposed to say). You’ll be glad to know that I survived, not only to tell the story (which, come to think of it, you may be regretting by now) but that I enjoyed my trip (or

flight). The view to the east goes over the Royal Docks and the Thames Barrier towards the eerie marshes of Essex where the river widens and seems to be stretching out before dissolving into the sea. To the west, beyond the strange new shapes of the Olympic Park, rise the skyscrapers of Docklands. The river squeezes tightly round the bend by the O2 Arena, which seems to sit beneath the cable car like a safety net. And beyond all that is London itself, with the old bits of skyline sharply pierced by The Shard, rising so much taller than its forebears, like an ungainly adolescent in a family shot.

When you see it from a distance, stretched across the old docks and running past the cranes and office blocks, it seems to hang like a necklace of beads about the skyline.

We tend not to treat London as a tourist destina-tion, those of us who live and work near to its bus-tle, but sometimes we all should award ourselves a day out, don some embarrassing souvenir pants and marvel at what is just down the road, up in the sky, over the river.

E ssex County Council is looking to recruit 40 supported lodgings providers to support young people leaving care to live independ-

ently.

Supported lodgings provides young people, aged 16 or over, with temporary accommodation after leaving the care system. In addition to providing a room, providers are also encouraged to help the young person learn basic life skills.

By recruiting just 40 more placements, spread across the county, Essex County Council could ensure that young people leaving care have the op-portunity to experience independence and gain the confidence they need to be self-sufficient.

Amira was 15 when she moved into supported lodgings, having come to England to seek asylum: “When I first came to England; it was very difficult for me but I was placed with a provider called Lizzy, who helped me with lots of things. I was in a new, strange country and Lizzy was there for me. She helps me manage my money and my future. I like living here, Lizzy is like my grandmother. I feel part of the family. Living with Lizzy helps me to concen-trate on my education and my life here, otherwise I

would be constantly thinking about my life back in Iraq. It takes one person to change someone’s life and Lizzy was that person. She was there for me when I was scared and lonely. My life is changed; I am happy studying and fitting into England.”

Without the support of Lizzy, Amira’s future would have looked incredibly different. Councillor Ray Gooding, Cabinet Member for Children’s Ser-vices explains why the supported lodgings service is so important: “Moving towards independence is a big step for any young person but for those in the care system who may not have the safety net of a family it can be incredibly daunting. Supported lodg-ings provides a safe, secure environment for young people to learn those life skills that are so vital to an independent and happy existence. I would encourage anyone who thinks they could support a young per-son with learning life skills and preparation for adult life to consider being a supported lodgings provider.”

Could You Provide The Stepping Stone to Independence?

Essex offers supported lodgings providers a weekly allowance as well as on-going support and advice. More information is available by calling 01245 431 957 or www.essex.gov.uk/supportedlodgings.

T he Department of Health has just announced that it has awarded Haven House Children’s Hospice £464,000, as part of a £60million boost to hos-

pices across England. The Woodford Green hospice, which bid for the

funds last year, has already submitted a planning applica-tion to Waltham Forest Council, with the hope that it will be able to create an annexe to the current building at The White House in Mallinson Park, Woodford Green.

There is no confirmed date for works to commence until planning consent has been approved. However if successful, the new annexe will create additional space to provide a broader range of specialist services for all those who use the hospice, as well as allowing Haven House to provide support for increased numbers of local life-limited children.

The total cost for the building works exceeds the Department of Health funding and is currently estimated at £699,000.

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the hospice, said of the award; ‘This really is an amazing boost for our 10th birthday year and will enable us to provide vital additional activities and a more comprehensive care programme for the local children and families we sup-port.’

Plans for the new building will include: New consultation facilities for clinicians (from Great

Ormond Street Children’s Hospital for example) to meet with local life-limited children closer to where they live

Increased meeting space for training and support for parents

A dedicated room for music and other therapy work (at present the hospice uses a sensory room for music therapy and only one thing can happen at any one time)

Additional accommodation for families to stay when their child is in the hospice

Mr Palfreman continues; ‘While this is a fantastic amount, the cost of the new annexe and other improve-ments is significantly higher than the funding we’ve received. Therefore we will still be working hard to secure additional funding for the build, in addition to the day-to-day costs of running the hospice. With this in mind, we will need the support of our local community more than ever to help us achieve these objectives.’

Speaking about the funding, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said, ‘Hospices help patients and their fami-lies at what can be the most difficult part of their life. This extra funding will help bring hospices up to date, so staff and volunteers can work in modern environments, helping them continue to provide wonderful support with compassion and kindness and patients will see a huge difference in the surroundings that play a consider-able part in helping them psychologically and physically.’

Haven House awarded £464,000 from Department of Health to fund new annexe

A fter almost 6 months of cold, wintery weather summer has arrived. This usually heralds the start of numerous mindless, action filled sum-mer blockbusters. However, this year we have a wide range of films

from family to horror movies on the big screen. Unfortunately they are not that great but at least you’ll have more time to relax in that summer sun now that it’s finally here. Enjoy!

Released: 3rd May - Chimpanzee If a review could solely be based on cinematography then this would be 5 star - it is stunning. The plot came from filmmakers following a group of chimpan-zees in the rainforest. On a simple level we follow a young chimp who be-comes an orphan only to be adopted by the alpha male of the group. How-ever, the visuals take you into the film and the positive messages about life itself make this a lovely movie.

29th May - The Big Wedding This is a classic case where an all star cast does not make for an all star film. Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams and many more A-listers labour through a movie that wants to be an English wedding comedy. The plot revolves around a long divorced couple’s adopted son getting married. But they have to fake being married so as not to offend the biological mother. There are few jokes and even less laughs.

7th June - The Iceman This is a fascinating crime drama based on the life of notorious Mafia hitman Richard Kuklinski. Between 1948 and 1986 Kuklinski murdered up to 250 peo-ple for the Gambino crime family whilst keeping up a friendly, suburban facade. When finally arrested his wife and family knew nothing of his psychopathic other life. So the movie’s content is certainly engaging but the film making has misfired trying to shoehorn this into another ‘Goodfellas’, making this intriguing but boring.

28th June - This Is The End A comedy from the ‘Judd Apatow studio’ starring Seth Rogen, James Franco and many other stars as themselves. Quite literally this time. The world’s biggest comedians are ‘off duty’ at a party in Hollywood when the end of the world occurs. They must then survive and stay alive against some of the movie busi-nesses biggest stars including Emma Watson. The first half of the film is inventive and funny but the rest is a slow let down.

DVDs to please The BAFTA and Academy Award winners are released on DVD and Blu-Ray so you can see what the ‘experts’ thought are the best films of 2013. The Impossible (6th May on DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99) is an emotional roller-coaster focusing on a British family who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. DJango Unchained (20th May DVD rrp: £11.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £18.99) won the Best Screen-play Oscar and while very violent is story-telling at its best. Academy Award-nominated Flight (3rd June on DVD rrp: £9.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £14.99) is a thrilling drama about an airline pilot who becomes a hero but the attention reveals his dark secrets. Lincoln (10th June on DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99) is all about Daniel Day Lewis’ Oscar-winning Best Actor performance and not to be missed. Enjoy!
