Dear parents and caregivers, Gates – Assembly on Fridays Tomorrow will be the term 2 K-6 assembly with a performance by year 3 and 4 students. If you are planning on attending the whole school assembly and arrive after 9:15am, you will need to gain entrance via the gate on the Cumberland Highway. Once the Assembly is finished everyone will need to exit the school via the gate on the Cumberland Highway. School Uniform It is starting to get chilly and we need to keep warm. Please ensure that students are wearing full school uniform, including green tights for girls and black school shoes for all. All beanies or scarves worn are expected to be green. You can purchase green beanies and scarves from the canteen. Girls wearing a hijab are expected to wear green or white only. Thank you for following our school’s Uniform Policy and keeping our students looking terrific. Student Clothing – Name Label It is now very cold in the mornings so students need to wear their jumper or jacket to school. During the day students often remove their jumper and can forget where they leave it. Please ensure your child’s uniform is labelled, especially the jumper or jacket so we can easily return it to you if lost. Parent-Teacher-Students Interviews Interviews will be held during week 10 of this term. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to exchange information, and get to know your child’s teacher and vice versa. Translators will be available to assist with the transfer of information. Interviews will take place in the school hall. Please complete the separate note sent home with the week 6 newsletter and return it to the class teacher so a time can be scheduled for the interview. Spare interview notes are at the office should you require one. Monday 1 July – Years 1 and 2 Tuesday 2 July – Year 3 and 4 Wednesday 3 July – Years 5 and 6 Thursday 4 July – Kindergarten and the Support Unit Student Reports Teachers have been busy completing a comprehensive report on each student. If you attend the Parent-Teacher-Student Interview you will receive your child’s report. All other reports will be sent home in term 3 on Wednesday 24 July 2019. I would like to congratulate every student on their report, as it is apparent from reading each report that great academic, social and emotional progress has been made this semester. Thank you to parents and caregivers for supporting children and their education at FWPS. Thank you also to the teachers, SLSOs and team leaders for their hard work providing the best opportunities for all students. Gates – Parent/Teacher Interviews from 1 July - 4 July All parents will need to enter the school grounds via the gate on the Cumberland Highway and exit via that gate. We normally ask parents visiting the site to report to the front office – instead, during the Interview Week we will mark your name off on a list in the school hall when you have your interview. Cyber Safety Students need to be encouraged to use the internet in a positive and safe way that protects them and reduces the risk of becoming a victim of unwanted communication or inappropriate materials online. The NSW Police Force website has some useful tips to support parents and caregivers about how to supervise their child’s internet use. The following exert is from the https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/safety_and_prevention/safe_and_secure/online_safety ‘The Internet, with all its benefits, presents new dangers to kids and parents need to be aware of those dangers. Parents need to be involved with their children's Internet experience. Teaching children how to handle themselves on the Internet is important. There are also filtering software packages and web site rating schemes designed to help parents guide their children's Internet experience while still allowing that child Internet independence.’

Refugee Week Refugee week is an annual activity to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and to celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. Refugee week is being celebrated during this week, from Sunday 16 June to Saturday 22 June 2019. The theme for Refugee Week will be ‘A world of stories’. Every refugee seeking safety brings their own story of why they left home, their journey and in some cases, finding safety in Australia. The sharing of stories is an opportunity to not only remember and honor their journey but also to educate the Australian community to better understand the courage of refugees and the contribution they make. During Refugee Wek I take the time to reflect on my late father and his family who are refugees, I remember their story and am forever thankful that Australia welcomed and embraced them. I am forever thankful to this wonderful country. Staff learning Not only do the students spend their days learning, but so do all the staff at FWPS. 3M have been super busy this term by starting off with NAPLAN and having the opportunity to have a University Student Teacher in class.

Student Learning During writing we have

been looking at Australia’s neighbouring

countries and brainstorming important

facts like climate, demography, transport

and more. We have learnt how to research using

Chromebooks as well as summarise the

information we have found. We love working as a team to bounce off

one another’s ideas.

Maths has been super exciting this term as we have learnt many new concepts. We really enjoy Position. We had a map and had to locate the position of certain objects using given coordinates. We also learnt about North, South, East and West when giving directions Have a look at how

engaged we are and again how well we work as a team!

3S achieving their best in term 2! 3S have been working hard in term 2! 3S students have been travelling to and learning about Australia’s neighbouring countries as part of our geography unit.

.

Working in our Maths groups is part of our daily routine. 3S have been working together to learn different strategies to help solve multiplication and division questions. Term 2 has been super busy for 3S as we practise and prepare for our assembly item.

Student Learning

Students travelled to Japan to discover the origin of Japanese Origami, then to Fiji and enjoyed learning some traditional Fijian phrases. Our next stop was New Zealand where we learnt about the many sacred landmarks found there. The last stop on our journey is China where we will learn all about the Great Wall of China.

As we travel around to the different countries, we collect stamps on our travel passport.

Contact Caroline on: 0449 157 143 On Wednesday 29 May, we made Chinese Spring Rolls with smooth, light, crisp and crackly skin - perfect for your child’s lunch box. Chinese Spring Roll Makes ~150 pieces Ingredients: • 1kg carrot sliced to matchsticks • 1 whole Chinese cabbage (or regular cabbage) finely sliced • 1 bunch of spring onions finely sliced • 1 tin of shiitake mushrooms drained and finely sliced • Vegetable oil for frying • 2 tbls corn-starch • 1 tsp sugar • 4 tbls soy sauce • 2 tsp sesame oil • 3 packs of small spring roll wrappers • 4 tbls plain flour • 4 tbls water • 1 can of vegetable oil spray Method • On a low heat, gently heat some vegetable oil in a large frying pan and fry spring onions

until fragrant but still green. • Turn up to a medium heat and add carrots- fry for about 5 minutes. • Add cabbage and shiitake mushrooms and fry until the vegetables are soft but a little bit

crunchy (about 10-15 minutes). Once cooked, turn off the heat. • In a small bowl, mix corn starch, sugar, soy sauce and sesame oil until well combined. Add

this mix to the cooked vegetables. (Allow vegetables to cool first by placing them in the fridge if necessary.)

• Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius and line one or more baking trays with baking paper.

• Place a tablespoon of vegetable mix to the middle of the wrapper. • Dip a finger into the bowl of plain flour and water and distribute the mixture on the top two

sides. • Roll from the bottom corner up, then fold in the side corners and continue to roll. • Once the tray is full, spray the spring rolls with vegetable oil.

Place them in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden. Flip the spring rolls over and spray the other side with vegetable oil and bake for another 10 minutes. The spring rolls should be golden, not brown.

• Eat with a dipping sauce of choice, such as plum sauce or sweet chilli sauce. • Tip: Do not overfill or wrap the spring roll wrappers too tightly otherwise they will split in the oven. • Left-over cooked spring rolls can be pan-fried the next day with a little bit of vegetable oil.

Scallion Pancake A delicious savory flatbread. Makes 4 large pieces. Ingredients

• 2 cups of plain flour and extra for dusting surface • 1 tsp salt • 1/2 cup of boiling • 1/3 cup of cool water • 2 tbls vegetable oil • 1 bunch of spring onion - green part only finely sliced • Vegetable oil

Method

• In a large mixing bowl add the flour and salt then mix. • Make a well in the middle of the bowl and add 1/2 cup of boiling water and let it stand for 10

minutes. • While waiting, add 1 tbls of vegetable oil into a frying pan on low heat and gently fry the sliced

green onion until soft and fragrant. (about 5 minutes). Turn off the heat and allow to cool. • Add 1/3 cup cold water and 1 tbls vegetable oil to the bowl of flour. • Bring the flour, water and oil together with your hands until combined. • Cover the bowl and allow to sit for 5 minutes. • Knead dough until smooth (3-5 minutes). The dough will be very soft. If it is too sticky, dust the

dough with flour until it is less sticky and can be kneaded till smooth. • Place the dough back in the bowl, cover and allow the dough to sit for 20 - 30 minutes. • Divide dough into 4 balls for large pieces. • On a floured surface, roll out each dough ball into circles about 3mm thick. • Add spring onion on the top of the circles leaving about 1cm around the side. • Roll the dough from the top to the bottom to make a pipe. • Then take one end and roll the dough so that it makes a scroll (snail). • Place the snail onto a plate and cover with a wet towel. • Continue doing this until all the dough balls have been rolled. • Heat a pan on low-medium heat. • Take a snail and using your fingers, gently push it flat on a floured surface. The flatter the

pancake the better. Use a rolling pin if needed. • Place the pancake into the pan and fry until it has dark golden spots (about 3-5 minutes). • Flip over and fry until cooked (about 2-3 minutes). • Roll out and cook the rest of the pancakes. • Enjoy with a dipping sauce such as soy sauce or enjoy with congee.

Note: Cooking times will be longer if the pancakes are thicker. The pancakes should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
