On Tuesday the 6th June, students in Years 7-10 attended an election debate in the main hall, with students representing all four of the major parties in the forthcoming general election: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and the Green Party.

The idea of the mock election was to give students an insight in to the electoral system and to give them the opportunity to decide which party they most agreed with.

The students debated in front of their peers, highlighting and justifying the main points of their individual party’s manifestos. The student candidates were debating to win the support of the students and staff who voted on Thursday, along with the rest of the country, in our very own Wilmslow High School mock election.

The votes were cast, counted and verified and the results announced at lunch time. The Labour Party won with 443 votes, closely followed by the Liberal Democrats with 426, the Conservatives with 313 and The Green Party receiving 70 votes. The student candidates all performed very well in front of their peers, and the year group audiences really got in to the spirit, listening intently and applauding the candidates’ responses.

Thank you to the three Sixth Form students for expertly chairing this event.

NOTES

Aspirations questionnaireFrom Thursday 8th – Friday 16th June, we are asking students to review their aspirations. They can submit new or updated responses to the Aspirations Questionnaire via Firefly. ALL students must have recorded at least one answer to this questionnaire this year.

It is important that all students update their aspirations questionnaire responses, as this information will be included in their Wider Curriculum Reports at the end of this term.

Summative AssessmentsThis year's second set of summative assessments are due to begin shortly for students in Year 7 to Year 10.

Students should already be preparing for these summative assessments by reviewing the learning of the year and practising retrieving and applying that learning in different ways: quizzing themselves and each other on the contents of their Knowledge Organisers, practising answering essay questions and solving problems, etc. Re-reading notes while listening to music and picking up social media notifications is not a recommended approach. More advice is provided here: https://tinyurl.com/yd87skro

Arrangements for summer summative assessments:· Assessment week for Year 7 and Year 8 is week commencing 19th June· Assessment week for Year 9 is week commencing 26th June· Year 10 will have formal written exams from Thursday 22nd June to Friday 30th June, with practical exams the following week· Year 7, 8 and 9 assessments will take place during students’ normal timetabled lessons during these weeks; no separate examination timetable will be published· Year 10 will receive personal examination timetables shortly. When they do not have an examination they will be expected to be in their timetabled lesson.· Most Year 7, 8 and 9 assessments will be designed to take about 30 minutes to complete, but students will be allowed longer than this to ensure that time is not a limiting factor· Most students will actually spend this additional time reading their private reading book: please ensure that your child brings their personal reader with them to school, as they should every day. Mathematics exams have been timetabled separately in order to allow a double period in the sports hall. They are as follows:· Year 7 Thursday 15th June P1-P2 (This is next week rather than during their assessment week)· Year 8 Monday 19th June P3-P4· Year 9 Monday 3rd July P3-P4 (This is in the week following their assessment week)

COMMUNITY

A Perfect day outLocal charity ‘Wilmslow Wells for Africa’ is holding their annual Open Gardens Day fundraiser this month, on the 24th of June. Located throughout Wilmslow, Handforth and Alderley Edge, it is a wonderful opportunity to stroll leisurely around some 19 different gardens and chat with proud owners. There’s truly something for everyone with lots of ideas to inspire - from wildlife havens, restful contemplative gardens, cottage gardens, meadows, formal contemporary and productive gardens with orchards and veg plots, even a miniature train and a specialist herb garden…you won’t be disappointed!

It’s a unique chance to be inspiration, enjoy a cup of tea with home made cakes, buy some plants and enjoy other folks’ gardens, but most importantly you’ll be contributing to the welfare and health of struggling communities in Africa.

For over 30 years, the volunteer-run charity has been working successfully to provide sources of clean water in rural African communities with projects bringing much-needed relief for many drought-stricken areas all over the continent.

For the 2017 Gardens Day, 19 gardens can be visited between 10.30am – 4.30pm on Saturday June 24th. In addition, lunches will be available at St John’s Church Rooms on Knutsford Road 11.30-2.30pm

Details of the gardens and how to buy tickets - £12 on the day, but £10 if bought in advance are available on the website wilmslow http://www.wilmslowwells.org.

Postponed: Cinema on the CarrsDue to the poor weather over the past few days and the deteriorating conditions forecast for Saturday 10 June a decision has been taken to postpone the Cinema on the Carrs 2017.

The new extended full day event featuring the family fun day, the matinee film ‘The Lion King’ and the evening feature ‘Dirty Dancing’ will now take place on Saturday 9 September.

Cllr Angela McPake, Chairman of the Wilmslow Town Council Events Team said

“It is particularly disappointing that this hugely anticipated event has needed to be postponed, however with the significant financial and organisational investment made by the Town Council in delivering this event I feel that it is important that it is enjoyed and attended by as many residents as possible. The weather forecast for Saturday, we believe, would significantly reduce attendance and whilst we have an option to postpone the event to September we believe that to be the best decision at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but hope that it is understood that an event of this nature is highly weather dependant.”
