Greetings From Your Chapter Directors

Alice & Ron Myers

GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone is “dry” and finally enjoying the “sunshine”.

We have some important dates this month….Freedom Memorial Wall is Sunday, May 7th, let’s remember our loved ones. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14th, hug your Mom. Memorial Day is Monday, May 29th; let’s not forget our veterans and military.

There are several events in May…Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Home Ride in Brookneal Va. May 6th. SC District Rally May 6th, 7th. Chapter NC-G’s (High Point) Gold “Wings” Challenge May 13th, cook those wings and maybe win some money. Chapter NC-E2’s (Elizabeth City) Ride for Kids May 21st. Busy, Busy month, hope you can at-tend some of these events, they are always fun.

One more event in May…Chapter A’s weekend to Quantico, VA to tour the National Museum of the US Marine Corp. May 19th , 20th, 21st. Dwain will have more infor-mation.

Our Friday Night Dinner ride was to Bon-Bon’s Grille. We had twelve members to attend. Food was good and friendship was great. Hats off the Fred & Janet Myers, they joined us. It is al-ways great to see them.

Paula Hines is getting up a Medic First Aid class. If you are interested, please get in

touch with her.

We are off to the District’s Ice Cream Social to

Homeland Creamery, Julian, NC.

A BIG thanks to Tom & Colleen FitzGerald for stepping up as our Assistant Chapter Directors.

We do not say “Thank You” enough to our Staff and Members for your support. We greatly appre-ciate all that you do.

After the last week or so, I believe we’ve pretty well caught up on our rain deficit. I know I’ve had enough to last me for a good long while. I had over 8 inches of water in a garbage can I’d left out with the lid off. That much rain really makes us ride slower and more carefully – hydroplaning is a dangerous possibility. That said, I had 7 students taking the Basic Rider Course in the rain April 22 and 23 – they toughed it out and all passed! They’re very happy and very proud of themselves and

what they learned and accomplished.

There is so much about motorcycling that makes us feel good, and gives us a sense of pride. In this month’s issue of American Motorcyclist, Hank Bonecutter wrote a guest column, Back from the Brink, How a Motorcycle Pulled Me Out of Depression. Hank’s article is a very personal and moving description of his slide into depression and working his way out of it. In his article, he told how he had retired and lost motivation, lost interest and became depressed. He describes how a friend introduced him to motorcycling. Hank researched the motorcycle culture, and took a motorcycle safety class to refresh his skills. He reconnected with another motorcycling friend who told him that motorcycling is a culture, a brotherhood, a journey – a family.

Hank bought a bike, and started riding, Texas. Gulf Shores, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, the Smokey Mountains, even the Tail of the Dragon. In his words, “Suddenly, I had a passion for something again. I was meeting new people, making new friends . . .and was excited about the future.” He writes of straddling your motorcycle and taking to the open road, just you and God and the great out-doors. Your senses are stimulated, your adrenaline is pumping. Excitement lurks on the perimeter of life. We know the excitement Hank is experiencing, and the pleasures of riding with our friends, old and new. Let’s keep that joy and excitement in our lives and share it!

On a sober note, there is a current movie, “13 Reasons Why”, about teen suicide, which is generating a lot of discussion of a very difficult subject, and prompting reminders of the Suicide Prevention Hot-line Numbers: 1-800-273-TALK or 1-800-273-8255. It’s a very stark reminder of the dangers of clinical depression and mental illnesses, which call for treatment by a mental health professional. In the US, we have a very high percentage of people who are currently taking antidepressant medica-tions. Hank was extremely fortunate to come through without professional help. We now have 6 GWRRA members who have stated their intention to take the First Aid and CPR class. We can have up to 12 students, so there is still room for you to sign up and take the class with us. We’ll learn a lot, have a good time, and be better prepared to help others. There might even be donuts – gotta have brain food. Please sign up at our Chapter gathering May 11. We have really good riding weather coming up, and Dwayne Strader has a ride planned that sounds really interesting, enjoyable, and even educational. He’s hitting all the buttons on this – as he usually does! We’ll have a lot of riding opportunities with Chapter rides, Regional rallies, Wing Ding – oh, the places we’ll go!

Looking forward to a wonderful riding season, and fun with our friends. We make safety a priority and truly we are friends for fun, safety and knowledge! Paula Hines, NC-A Chapter Educator

April found us having fun with our Goldwing Friends of the Central Chapters, along with others.

We had fun attending the “Saving Grace K-9” rally hosted by NC-M and learning how they train the different breeds of dogs for Veter-ans suffering from PTSD. Rounding out the month are plans for at-tending the NC District Ice Cream Gathering on April 29th at Home-land Creamery. We chased the Couples Plaque frequently and thus far, have captured it 9 times for the year.

We are looking forward to the month of May, at-tending the Patrick Boys and Girls Home Ride, spon-sored by VA-J Chapter on May 6th; Freedom Me-morial Wall Service on May 7th and the “Gold Wings” Rally hosted by NC-G on May 13th. And we will definitely watch for other fun events to

have a chance to be with our Gold Wing Friends.

And another note aside from GWRRA, we are excited on the news of an addition to our family – 5th Grandchild due in October, 2017!

Be safe in your travels and as always, hope we can see you at some of the other NC Chapter Gather-ings, as well as our monthly Gathering.

First I want to thank everyone for the prayers and cards I re-

ceived while I was sick and in the hospital last month. They were

greatly appreciated. I hope and pray I never get that sick again.

Sometimes at our meetings we can have a crowd, espe-cially when we have a plaque to give away, so please re-member to get up and go around the room and speak to

all our guests and make them feel welcome. We would like for them to come back and visit us again even when

we don’t have a plaque to give away.

I would like to remind everyone if your membership dues are coming up for renewal that when you receive your

card to make sure the information on it is correct. A lot of times the ARL I receive is not always correct and up to date so when you renew could you tell me when you see me at the meeting, “Hey, I re-

newed.” or even send me an email saying the same.

Now on the brighter side—the rain is gone and the sun is shining so

you can get out and ride. Don’t forget while you are riding or out and

about for anything to invite prospective members to our meeting.

Ride Safe.

SO MANY PLACES TO GO, NOT ENOUGH TIME!

Whether you are still working, or enjoying retirement, there doesn’t seem to be enough time to take part in all the activities we are offered these days. First there is our local Chapter’s activities, be it our regular Chapter Gathering, a great ride or a favorite ice cream social, or a needed training opportunity to stay current in the Rider Ed Levels Program. Next on the calendar are several oth-er FUN events called “Chapter FUNd Raisers, like a Chili Dump or other easy ways to raise funds for the Chapter operation. Add in a Mall Show to help support Motorist Awareness (also a great Recruiting Opportunity). Then comes a District Event, another great ride like a Color or Wildflower tour, or a Bug Run. Add the District Rally or the annual District Fundraiser and then there is the Region Rally, the list never ends….

Wow! Now it’s time to decide which of these great events we can attend. This is tough, since we want to be at all of them. Maybe, since two of these events are on the same day, we can spend a part of the day at each. With our extended riding season in Arizona, the calendar is really full of exciting places to go almost every weekend.

If you are a Chapter Director, you have even more of these difficult choices to make in set-ting up a Ride or Social Schedule for your Chapter. You need to consider the likes and dis-likes of the Chapter Members, season of the year, weather conditions, etc. When you con-sider how important your own Chapter FUNdraiser is to your treasury, you always try to in-clude the other Chapters’ FUNdraisers in your Chapter’s Schedule of Activities. Again, you probably can’t attend them all, but you do try to support all that are reasonable.

Oh oh! What do you do if you find out that there is a scheduling conflict between your Ac-tivity Schedule and another distant Chapter FUNdraiser? How about sending that other Chapter Director a nice note explaining the dilemma along with a check payable to that Chapter for a “token” donation towards their treasury. This easy and thoughtful gesture will go a long ways to spreading good will and insure that there are no hard feelings between Chapters.

Recently a local Chapter Director found out that a popular FUNdraiser for another Chapter two hours away was now scheduled on the same Saturday as their local Chapter Gathering. This was due to a needed Park Ramada only being available at that time. The local CD went ahead and put the word out and advertised the event with a ride to leave from their Gather-ing, earlier than normal, so that the local Members were able to make it to both events on the same day. Here again, a Chapter Director was able to support another Chapter’s Chili-fest without sacrificing their normal monthly Chapter Gathering.

Our Association is blessed with many very supportive CDs who go out of their way to be “good neighbors” to other CDs. We thank them for their thoughtfulness. We thank all of our many fine Officers who do so much for our Members to enrich their experience in GWRRA.
