The Woman BehindFather’s Day
It took a mother to bring equityto fathers.
As she sat in church more than100 years ago in Spokane, Wash.,Sonora Smart Dodd listened to asermon about Mother’s Day. Itmade her wonder why there wasno Father’s Day. Dodd, one of sixchildren, was determined to find away to honor her father, whoraised the family after Dodd’smother died. That year, 1909,Dodd took her concerns to theSpokane Ministerial Alliance andsuggested that fathers have theirday. Her idea gained support. OnJune 19, 1910, Spokanerecognized the first Father’s Dayon record. Dodd, who had a sonof her own, must have appreciatedit when President Calvin Coolidgeapproved a nationwidecelebration of Father’s Day in1924.
Dodd, an Arkansas native, was96 when she died in 1978.
Wit and Wisdom“By the time a man realizes that
maybe his father was right, heusually has a son who thinks he’swrong.”
—Charles Wadsworth“When I was a boy of 14, my
father was so ignorant I couldhardly stand to have the old manaround. But when I got to be 21, Iwas astonished at how much hehad learned in seven years.”
—Mark Twain“Fatherhood is pretending the
present you love most issoap-on-a-rope.”
—Bill Cosby“When I was a kid, I used to
imagine animals running undermy bed. I told my dad, and hesolved the problem quickly. Hecut the legs off the bed.”
—Lou Brock“The most important thing a
father can do for his children is tolove their mother.”
—Theodore Hesburgh
