57th Annual Stowe Antique and Classic Car ShowThis Weekend at Nichols Field
One of New England’s largest classic car shows, the annualStowe Antique and Classic Car Meet, celebrates 57 years asVermont’s largest and oldest collector vehicle event by showcas-ing classic and antique cars, trucks, street rods, military vehiclesand more.
Located at Nichols Field on Rt. 100 in Stowe, this year’s three-day meet is August 8 through 10, and will feature over 700 regis-tered show vehicles, a huge flea market and car corral where col-
lector cars are grouped for sale. The “Stowe Show,” as it’s com-monly referred to, is known for its variety of antique cars. Showcars start with those of the Brass Era (pre-1915) through the clas-sics of the 20’s and 30’s, with many post war vehicles from the50’s, through muscle cars of the 60’s and 70’s.
Don’t miss the special display honoring the classic “woodie”wagons, sedans and convertibles.
The show opens on Friday, August 8th with show cars, the car
corral and flea market, where just about anything related to thecollector car hobby can be found.
Saturday features a fashion judging contest, parade of showvehicles through downtown Stowe, and an oldies street dancefrom 7 to 10 p.m. turning Main St. into a “Happy Days” scene.
Sunday, all show vehicles are on Nichols Field for the judges toinspect and choose the top three for each of the 45 show classes.Early afternoon will see the presentation of awards for all classes
plus special awards for the President’s Choice, Best of Show,Canadian Award and more.
Back by popular demand at the show is a Crafter’s Tent whereVermont arts and crafts will be showcased and for sale.
Show hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $10, seniors (60+) $8,children 12 and under free.

Winooski River Clean Up to be Held August 9th
■ ■ ■
On Saturday August 9th, the Friends of the Winooski River andits partners encourage community members to come out and helpclean up the Winooski River. This event caps off Keurig GreenMountain’s annual week-long employee cleanup of the WinooskiRiver. Last year, two and a half tons of trash and 370 tires wereremoved.
This is the tenth year for the Keurig employee clean up. “We arethrilled that Keurig has chosen to devote so much effort to clean-ing up the Winooski River and that the company has decided toexpand its efforts to support a community volunteer event,” statedAnn Smith, Executive Director of the Friends of the WinooskiRiver. Keurig employees have supported Friends efforts in otherways, including helping with tree planting and rain garden main-tenance.
There are about 15 different sites where volunteers can help out. This includes several sites in or near Montpelier and Barre on theWinooski River and its tributaries, the North Branch, the StevensBranch and the Dog River. Other clean-up locations are centeredin Waterbury and Northfield. Some specific locations are atVermont Granite Museum, North Branch Nature Center, theWinooski River in Montpelier (from behind Allen Lumber), theDog River in Northfield and areas on the Waterbury Reservoir.
Volunteers can find a complete list of sites and register to partici-
pate via the American Rivers website: www.americanrivers.org/gmcr-nrc/vermont-community-river-cleanup. All volunteers willbe provided lunch and a chance to win raffle prizes.
The Friends of the Winooski River work to protect and enhancethe Winooski watershed through cleanups, plantings, water qualitymonitoring, and educational programs. The Friends also areengaged in riparian restoration, water quality monitoring, storm-water mitigation and education and in-stream habitat improve-ments. ■Dale Earnhardt Jr. realized that it took a bit of luck for him towin at Pocono Raceway in June. But he knew his team was firingon all cylinders Sunday when he completed the season sweep.Benefitting from impeccable pit strategy, Earnhardt led the final14 laps and a car with the performance to hold off Kevin Harvickon a restart with three laps to go to ring up his third victory of the2014 season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series GoBowling.com400. “It wasn’t about luck this time,” said Earnhardt, who roaredpast Brad Keselowski in the June race after Keselowski caught apiece of trash in his grill and began to overheat. Earnhardt creditedcrew chief Steve Letarte and his team for not resting on their lau-rels at Pocono. “We were determined to go home from the last winand improve the car,” Earnhardt said. “Steve and the guys studiedand improved the setup. We had a little luck on the win the lasttime with Keselowski having the debris and we wanted to be in thedriver’s seat this go-round with a faster car.” Letarte said thehomework paid off in a faster Chevrolet. “I feel we unloaded abetter car for the second Pocono than we did the first Pocono,” hesaid. “You cannot ever assume a winning car is going to be goodenough the next week. While we were excited to win (in June) andwe’ll take it, there was room for improvement, so we worked veryhard between that race and this race.” The result was Earnhardt’ssecond season sweep of his career (Talladega 2002). He alsobecame the first driver to sweep at Pocono since Denny Hamlin in2006. It was the fi fth consecutive Sprint Cup victory at Pocono forHendrick Motorsports, which also had Jeff Gordon in contentionfor much of the race. Gordon, a six-time winner at Pocono, led arace-high 63 laps. He also became the first driver to lead 1,000laps at Pocono and passed the 24,000 mark in career laps led inSprint Cup competition. Joey Logano, who led the first 30 laps, finished third ahead of Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle.■ The 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, BradKeselowski snared a second straight win in the NASCARNationwide Series US Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway on Saturdaynight , then hoped a jet back to Pocono Raceway to compete inSunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Long Pond, Pa.Simple. Neat, Expected — except part-timer Michael McDowellnearly spoiled the big-timer’s happy, if nerve-wracking Saturdaynight ending. “I had my shot at it,” said McDowell, who ledbriefly on lap 248 before the always-fast Keselowski swept highand surged to his third win in four U.S. Cellular 250 starts. Thathe did — thanks to another driver’s misfortune. James Buescher’s
crash on lap 241 set up a madcap three-lap dash to the finish thatallowed McDowell to challenge for the upset. “A really goodbattle,” said Keselowski, who led 146 laps and has finished noworse than third in seven Nationwide starts this season. “He hadme there for a minute. Somehow I slid back by him. I’m notreally sure how it worked out. These wins aren’t easy to come byand I’m really proud of the effort everyone put into it.” Keselowski’sstated goal entering the Nationwide portion of his weekend was toaid Team Penske in a tight race at the top of the owner point stand-ings. He accomplished that, narrowing Joe Gibbs Racing’s leadfrom eight points to one (804 to 803). “This isn’t a race thatPenske circles and says we want to send a Cup driver to,”Keselowski said. “It’s just the way it works right now, (with)development drivers running in the (Camping World) Trucksseries. The race is a conflict and it just kind of schedules out theway it does for me to be here. But I’ve enjoyed the success I’vehad here and it’s important for me personally to see those (devel-opmental) drivers get opportunities in races like that.” JGR driversSam Hornish and Elliott Sadler finished fourth and 10th, respec-tively. Hornish — one of a handful to choose four tires on the lastpit stop — led 65 laps and notched his fourth straight top-four fin-
ish at Iowa. Trevor Bayne led the first 31 laps and settled for thirdwith a $100,000 silver lining. Bayne locked up the NationwideInsurance Dash 4 Cash prize, earning another $100,000 for fanJames Dennis of Henry, Ill. Chase Elliott finished eighth andmaintains a narrow lead of 714 points to 712 over Regan Smith, who placed sixth.■Austin Dillon had to work hard in the final 10 laps, then workovertime to claim his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Seriesvictory of the season.
