The World between 1920 and 1960 With the end of the World War 1 the colonial empires of the 19 th century began to collapse, as it happened with the British Empire or completely disappeared like the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires. Decolonization: a process of the 20 th century where Asian and African countries achieved their independence from European colonial control. Interwar (1919-1939) A period of growth for ideas and culture, as well as a period of peace between the First and Second World War. Surrealism A movement that represented pure expression of thought, unregulated by reason. It was a political movement; André Bretón and Rene Magritte were sympathetic to Socialism and Salvador Dalí to Fascism.

It was a political movement; André Bretón and Rene Magritte were sympathetic to Socialism and Salvador Dalí to Fascism.

The Second World War was decided by the participation of two countries with opposing regimes: the Soviet Union, with a socialist government; and the United States, that thought that Capitalism was the best way for people to obtain freedom.
