Based in Lyon, France, Euronews is a pan-European news organization with multiculturalism at the heart of its DNA.

With a team composed of more than 500 journalists representing a total of 30 nationalities, Euronews’ mission is to cover world events from a unique pan-European perspective - striving to reflect the diverse viewpoints of all European countries to provide truly balanced news coverage.

Thanks to its multi-perspective editorial approach, Euronews has become the continent’s biggest news channel in terms of daily television audience.

MORE CHOICES CHANGEAUDIENCE VIEWING HABITS

No longer satisfied with being fed international news stories comprised of footage and sound bites from leaders and inhabitants of distant countries, today’s viewers want to hear the reaction to world events from those who share their beliefs, their customs, and their concerns with options to engage in the discussion.

p.3

The breadth and depth of choices that viewers now have for consuming content has enabled them to be more selective as to where and how they get their news.

Since its inception in 1993, Euronews had been addressing the region’s need for multilingual programming by providing a single channel of news programming with identical video and English-only graphics delivered to all countries with 12 different language voice over versions.

Groundbreaking in its day, this “Multiplex” approach to broadcasting lacked the ability to adapt programming to the specific needs of individual countries, a critical limitation for connecting with today’s savvy viewers. Euronews also faced competition from local broadcasters who solely focused on serving content adapted specifically for their viewers.

Constrained by a “one-size-fits-all” infrastructure and pressured by local competition, Euronews’ leadership instructed management to pursue a solution that would enable the adaptation of stories for audiences in individual countries. Along with this mandate was the condition that no additional headcount be added.

A MANDATE FOR CHANGE & THE CASE FOR CONTENT CUSTOMIZATION

Customization is at the heart of this transformation. Euronews will adapt its output to the needs of the consumers it serves, empowering the uniqueness of our multiculturalism. Thanks to the substantial investment in Euronews core capabilities and operations, we are creating a robust, agile and innovative organization to become the first global News brand by reinventing our approach to broadcast journalism from production to distribution.

Michael Peters, CEO of Euronews

Euronews - Empowering journalists

The broadcaster sought to replace its single multi-language channel with 12 separate cross-platform channels, each fully customizable to meet the needs of local viewers, becoming the world’s first “Glocal Media*”.

A SNAPSHOT OF THE LEGACY OPERATION – AN HOUR TO AIR BREAKING NEWS

Not only did Euronews’ “Multiplex” programming fail to meet the needs of viewers, but the workflow was inefficient due to the reliance on redundant, serial, and manually intensive tasks. These issues combined reduced the relevance of the programming and impacted the broadcaster’s ability to effectively deliver breaking news.

It typically took Euronews an hour to bring breaking news stories to air, and an additional hour to publish television content to the broadcaster’s digital platforms. Obviously, these delays were unacceptably long given the increasing immediacy demanded by today’s television and online viewers.

Severely limited by its inflexible infrastructure, the broadcaster’s workflow lacked a proper integration between the different tools. Consequently, Euronews journalists had been heavily reliant on technicians to perform many aspects of production due to the complexity of its disparate tools.

EURONEWS REIMAGINES THE (MULTI-LINGUAL) BROADCAST

To transform the operation, Euronews sought a single, agile, software-based solution that would free journalists from their dependence on technicians by empowering them with tools to manage all aspects of production.

This included tasks historically familiar to them, such as scripting and voicing, but also new tasks, including screening video feeds, editing, graphics, interacting directly with news casts schedules and publishing to digital & social platforms.

For such a large undertaking, Euronews needed more than just a supplier, it needed a long-term partner. Through a prior successful engagement with Dalet at its Africanews subsidiary, Euronews had firsthand experience with Dalet’s flexible solutions and expertise. After careful consideration, it was determined that of all the potential partners Euronews considered, Dalet could best support both the “Monoplex” localized content workflows and the “Multiplex” global content workflows.

Dalet provided an agile, cost-effective platform that could support the massive increase in content output without requiring an increase of staff. The platform could also evolve with Euronews over time, which was key in the decision. In addition to the technology advantages, Dalet’s comprehensive training offering and change management expertise provided the necessary guidance for the existing Euronews staff to successfully make the quantum leap forward.

AGILE PLATFORM BREAKS DOWN TRADITIONAL BARRIERS

The ambitious project, which was to be delivered within a matter of months, included 10 new, localized television channels, including English, French, German, Hungarian, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish, each with a corresponding digital channel, as well as two additional Arabic and Farsi digital-only channels.

Once completed, more than 500 users across the four major Euronews offices -in Athens, Brussels, Budapest, and Lyon - would be fully connected and seamlessly collaborating for the first time under the Dalet Unified News Operations, powered by the Dalet Galaxy media asset management (MAM) and workflow orchestration platform.

A LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP

Learn more about the transformation

Employing a story-centric approach, the Dalet Galaxy data model disintermediates the media supply chain allowing users to produce, manage and distribute content at the component level, a much more efficient and flexible way to facilitate complex and mass content volume workflows such as Euronews multiplatform news production. This means that journalists can work on a story as an open project and are able to access and rework any component of it at any time to build a new composition; making collaboration and content curation much more powerful and effective across the entire newsroom.

Empowered with Dalet’s story-centric workflow and extensive fast news production tools, Euronews news teams can log, search, plan, script, add voice overs, edit footage and create graphics, assemble stories, and distribute finished stories from any computer or mobile device. A faster approach to news production, the Dalet Unified News Operation solution delivered the production control Euronews journalists had long desired leveraging the future proof Dalet Galaxy platform to meet management requirements for long-term agility.

REAL-TIME TEAM COLLABORATION

Dalet provides centralized access to content for all users with shared clipbins. This gives Euronews journalists the ability to collaborate on common global stories, leverage shared content for creating their own localized stories, and access other journalists’ stories for use in their own country. With the proper rights, users can also access rundowns and playlists.

Thanks to Dalet’s integrated chat capabilities, journalists have dedicated chat groups to communicate with one another instantaneously within the news production framework. Particularly useful for communicating alerts and assignments, newsroom heads use Dalet’s chat capabilities throughout the day to keep all journalists informed and on task.

ORCHESTRATED WORKFLOW WITH PROCESS AUTOMATION

Euronews historically lacked an integrated solution automating the flow of content between ingest, production and playout. Over time, they developed manual processes to overcome these integration shortcomings, but the result was a complicated workflow with redundant copies of assets spread across multiple locations.

With the flexibility to support varied workflows, Euronews is utilizing Dalet’s powerful, BPMN 2.0-compliant workflow engine to simplify production planning. By creating events inside Dalet Galaxy’s event planner, newsroom heads easily and efficiently designate assignments to journalists.

USER-FRIENDLY EDITING & VOICING CAPABILITIES The lack of integrated editing capabilities in the previous infrastructure forced the use of more complicated editing systems operated by trained technicians. Today, all journalists edit their own stories using the Dalet OneCut multimedia editor, built into Dalet Galaxy. They can create and apply graphics themselves, share content easily, broadcast to linear channels and publish to digital outlets right from their desks.

The outdated and time-consuming process of recording voice overs in mixing cabins has even been replaced by Dalet. Journalists, in the newsroom and in the field, can record voice oversright from their desktop, laptop or mobile device using Dalet OneCut and the web-based client, Dalet WebSpace.

With centralized assets and connected tools, staff can easily share and develop stories.

MULTI-PLATFORM, HIGH-QUALITY GRAPHICS CAPABILITIES Previously, journalists needed to request graphics from a separate department, potentially waiting behind every other journalist also requesting graphics. Dalet Cube has revolutionized graphics production for Euronews thanks to customized graphic layouts, each journalist the ability to create and playout their own localized graphics, in their local language, right from their desktop for all distribution outlets. The platform allows journalists to seamlessly repurpose television-formatted graphics for Euronews digital platforms, which now all feature graphics optimized for digital platform viewing.

SEAMLESS INTEGRATION WITH EURONEWS’ CMS & SOCIAL CHANNELS

Historically, Euronews’ Content Management System (CMS) was entirely disconnected from its broadcast system. Because of this lack of integration, Euronews’ digital team was consumed with the technical tasks involved in repurposing television content for the broadcaster’s digital platforms.

With Dalet, the process of publishing television content on Euronews’ digital platforms is now fully automated. Every time a story is created, Dalet Workflow Engine automatically produces both a television story and a digital story, and all journalists can immediately access all assets associated with either platform.

Because digital publishing has been greatly simplified, Euronews has been able to move it upstream, with journalists now publishing their own stories to the broadcaster’s digital platforms. Part of the digital team, previously dedicated solely to publishing tasks, has moved into digital journalist roles producing new content experiences.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHANGE MANAGEMENT

Dalet’s team of experts were crucial in helping Euronews through the steps of this ambitious transformation while keeping a 24X7 global news broadcast up and running.

Given that many Euronews journalists had never performed the production tasks that were now being requested of them, a great deal of training was required in a very short time. Dalet’s team of experts and professional trainers delivered training to over 400 journalists and 100 technicians over a period of five months.

When you embark on a project like this, you don’t really know the target in every detail so it’s vital to have a very flexible solution, which enables you to design as you wish for each platform and each particular station. The Dalet platform allows us to better manage our complex multiplatform production while making it simpler for our users. Journalists can collaborate better, share content seamlessly, and transform an original story with minimal effort to adapt it for each language and audience.

A FUTURE-PROOF FOUNDATION TO REINVENT EURONEWS BROADCAST & DIGITAL OFFER WHILE STRENGTHENING ITS EDITORIAL POSITIONING

Euronews has made amazing strides in achieving the goals outlined by its management team as part of the “Euronews Next” mandate. This success is directly attributable to the broadcaster’s own business and technology choices, and especially the selection of the Dalet Unified News Operations solution. Thanks to powerful and integrated MAM, NRCS, and NPS (News Production System) capabilities,. Euronews deployed one of the world’s most technically advanced newsrooms, freeing journalists from tedious and manual tasks and empowering them with the tools and time necessary to enhance and increase story output.

Delivering on the promise to provide compelling content adapted to meet the needs of specific countries, Euronews launched 12 new cross-platform channels. Euronews has achieved its goal of delivering compelling content while increasing efficiency and reducing cost, all while incurring no additional headcount.

Weeks after the launch, Euronews was already producing more than double the amount of television content that it did under its legacy infrastructure. Additionally, by synchronizing the production of content between its television and digital platforms, Euronews is now producing 20% more content for their digital channels and managed to grow traffic to their website by 66% since the beginning of 2018.

The strategic transformation achieved by Euronews is not only about the implementation of 12 separate language services, but much more than that. Content customization and connected audiences are truly at the heart of Euronews operations, delivering on the strategic vision and mission defined by their top management.

KEY BENEFITS

p.13

The most positive thing about the Dalet system for all the journalists has been their empowerment. They are no longer reliant on other people to make things happen. They then have the power to adapt the content to tell the story that they want to tell rather than having to tell the same on each platform regardless of language. Dalet has enabled us to give more individuality to our storytelling.
