The WEF reached milestones in Red Apple Grants, Community Quiz Bowl and our website. In January 2010, the Foundation surpassed the $200,000 mark in Red Apple Grants awarded to teachers in Warsaw Community Schools. These grant funds have been awarded to teachers through a very competitive application process since 1990. With the added support of three major sponsors, WEF was able to award nearly $16,000 in Red Apple Grants. This represents the highest dollar amount of grants awarded in a single year to our teachers in our history. We are proud of this milestone, however, the committee evaluated applications totaling over $40,000 last year from our teachers! We were unable to award some well-deserved grant requests due to limited resources. We are fortunate to have the desire and dedication of our teachers who strive for academic innovation and excellence for our youth. The 2010 Community Quiz Bowl in March was our next milestone. We had a record 39 teams participating in the Quiz Bowl. With the assistance of our major sponsors and team sponsors, this event raised over $13,000 for educational initiatives. This community fund raiser continues to grow year after year. As one participant mentioned last year, “This is the most fun I have ever had at a community event. I look forward to it every year!” The development of our new website was another milestone, which will keep you, our donors, abreast of our activities and events. You can also make your donations to WEF through the website. Check us out at www.warsaweducationfoundation.org. As you read through our annual report, you will see that through your donations, we continue to support the N.E.W. Workshop, WCS Chess Tournament, EdCom Scholarships, Academic Reception for WCHS students and recognition of the Warsaw Community Schools Teacher of the Year. We look forward to setting new milestones in 2011. But, we can only pursue them with your assistance. Please consider increasing your contributions to WEF. The Warsaw Education Foundation works to establish links between our area schools and businesses. This past year we have continued in established partnerships and many exciting events have been happening. Some of the highlights include students singing at company Christmas parties and companies displaying artwork and newsletters from our schools. We have companies providing funding for a freshwater aquarium, sponsoring school teams for the Community Quiz Bowl and even providing the needed funds to purchase 20 refurbished computers to help 3

rd graders publish books and design Power Points. Area

business people are in our schools volunteering with school projects, teaching lessons about finances and tutoring students who need extra help.

One exciting newer area for companies to get involved in our schools is through Lego® Robotics. Washington Elementary was provided a Lego® Mindstorm kit and alternative energy kits by Biomet. Zimmer provided engineers and the registration fee for 8 teams to represent Edgewood Middle School in the Lego® Robotics competition. Four of these teams went on to state. At the high school, DePuy has become actively involved in the new advanced robotics club being offered at Warsaw Community High School. Each partnership is important to building a true community that works together to help our students. We are looking for more people and more area businesses to partner with our schools. If you would like more information, contact JoElla Smyth, WEF Vice President and Chair of the Partnership committee at [email protected]. We need you!
