Are you looking forward to coming to New Plymouth as part of the 2014 NZ tour?I am delighted to be returning to New Plymouth in May. The city holds special memories for me going back to 1967 when at the city’s invitation I interrupted my studies at the London Opera Centre to perform in two concerts at the Bowl of Brooklands as part of the 10th Festival of the Pines. Then in 1999 I returned for another concert at the Bowl and invited an ensemble of Opera Factory’s young singers to join me for another great evening in Taranaki.

You have sung in all the great opera houses of the world, any favourites?I haven’t forgotten Santa Fe Opera in USA. It was my first leading role – and after the cold of London, Santa Fe’s wide open spaces and brilliant sunshine were certainly memorable. My first night in a Metropolitan Opera in New York was the opposite – so much snow I nearly didn’t get through the traffic to the performance.

Then there’s the Paris Opera…. the word “grand” doesn’t come anywhere

An Evening WithClassical

Few tickets remaining!near to describing it, being there is like stepping into another world. I enjoyed being at the Sydney Opera House – it has a distinct feeling of being an important part of the city – and the dressing room windows look straight onto the harbour and the sailing …… wonderful.

Who has had a big influence on your career? My parents had a very big influence in my life and my father was my hero. Without their recognition that I had something to offer, and their unfailing support and sacrifices, none of the successes would ever have happened. My two singing teachers – Dame Sister Mary Leo and Vera Roszca – trained my voice into its right place.

Then in my early twenties, Richard Bonynge and Dame Joan Sutherland indicated the music pathway they thought my singing could follow, and they were right. Without those six people I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What do you love most about New Zealand and being a New Zealander? There is a kind of loyalty many people have towards the country they grew up in – if the growing up was happy. My growing up was happy, and although becoming a singer internationally was exciting, I still find in New Zealand the qualities of space and peace and green-ness which aren’t quite the same anywhere else. Its home.

What are your other interests ? I love to fish. When I’m back in New Zealand I take my boat out fishing every day. My other major interest is the Foundation I established in 2004. I began to realise that when the time comes and I am no longer performing, that my many years of experience in the world of professional music could fade away with me. My Foundation set out to observe young talent, and mentor those who were clearly outstanding. It’s a major interest of mine – I feel that with the career I’ve had, there is a responsibility to put some effort back to help those young singers who have a chance to be the future of fine music.

Which performance has been the most memorable, and why?In 1974 I was to sing Desdemona in “Othello” at the immensely prestigious Metropolitan Opera in New York, taking over from another soprano who was leaving after the first couple of weeks. Soon after I arrived I was suddenly told that the other lady had gone down sick and that I must go on that same day. I had never seen the stage, never met the conductor, never even met the leading man. But my training said “Concentrate” – so I went on and sang the whole opera without any rehearsal – and then discovered it had been broadcast live on radio across the entire USA. That one performance became the basis of my later career at the Metropolitan Opera.

Repeat Offender is about that moment where every part of your body wants to smash something in half, like Godzilla, then taking a deep breath, reassessing the situation and then doing it anyway.

Repeat Offender is about letting go, losing your temper and loving what you can’t have because you are forbidden by a court order, but hanging out in their front garden with a thermos and binoculars anyway. It’s about picking your battles, knowing when to hold them and when to fold them. If you come within 100m of this show, you will find yourself laughing!
