The first month of the ”new Bdoll” is nearly over, and the amount of members is just right. Before the changeover, I predicted that 30 members will stay, and that amount has been reached and exceeded by a few! *Cheers* ...and then we’ll look for some new members. :)

Summer has arrived to the Northern Hemisphere, but here on the south side of the Earth we’re freezing. Hopefully the Gallery will bring in some lovely summer girls and boys to warm us up though. Do remember to keep a Barbie with you at all times during the summer - you never know when a photo opportunity knocks!

Speaking of photos, sunny weather is good for inside photo shoots as well, and that is where the tutorial of this issue comes in; Photographing Barbie on a pure white background. I got so excited about this technique myself that I’m running out of dolls to shoot! That would be great news to the Identification Database, if I hadn’t added all my dolls in it yet.

The retirees have a serious message this month, and they deliver it with the same gentle manner as always. The story includes a character from our past gossip col-umn! Guess who that is! (No peeking!)

Our member introduction is presenting the gifted Aurora, and the doll introduction is putting the spotlight on her evil Christabel. That’s a couple! Aurora is offer-ing an invaluable tip for those of us who still have a thing or two to learn about repaints. I’ll have to give it a go!

There’s also a new column on offer. Heart Divided by Six. It is a traditional Q&A about relationships and love, but of course for our beloved doll friends. The tragedies in 1:6th scale are unusual for us, but every day issues for our plastic dudes and chicas.

In this issue, there is a 3 page gossip column, so people with a thirst for gossip are well set up! Hopefully still starting from the future magazine, when KiteCat returns to her post, there’ll be as much questionable behaviour in our doll rooms!

Vivi will be woolling1 us to travel after Barbies, so this is not a safe magazine to read. Tie up your purse strings and fasten your seat belts.

In order to ensure you are not completely reliant on theBdoll, the back page includes a few more links to enable you to get rid of your money easily. There’s a couple safe links too, though.

Enjoy!

Sebastyne

Cheers

White Background This technique is so easy and at the same so very powerful that I am almost unwilling to tell you how easy it is! This is the last time you’ll need a lasso. 1. First, you’ll need a white background. This is the hardest part, as you will have to find a material that lets light through a little, but isn’t see-through. I use white presentation board. You can find it at craft shops, advertising agencies, office supplies stores and art- and framing -stores. If all that fails, try online. The board is light plastic, with a hollow lines running through it, like plastic corrugated cardboard. (The other option is to use glass that is covered with white paper. ) The purpose is to filter light through white, making the white really white. 2. Find a spot that you can get a bright light behind and under your subject. I photograph against the window, but it is possible a bright led light would do that trick too. (See the photo.) 3. By using a flash light you will get enough light on the subject even if your room was a poorly lit. In case you would be worried about the flash light shadows, they will disappear into the white background. 4. Transfer the photos into Photoshop or other editor. Find a setting that lets you adjust ”curves”. (In Photoshop ctrl+M

or Image->Adjustments-> Curves) Drag the guide from the top right corner towards the middle until the background has turned pure white around Barbie. The rest of the shadows can be painted white with a brush. Without the need to use lasso near the doll. Check out the screenshots on the next page. 5. After this you can easily adjust the colour balance and other things in the photo if you find it needs some, but surprisingly often this is all you need to do.

This photo has been taken on a cloudy day. Ideally, the photo will turn out whiter to start with.

Finish up by painting any left over gray areas white

Usually you’ll have to drag the indicator over the highest “heaps”.

A photo taken on a very sunny day, WITHOUT EDITING to give an example to those of you who don’t have an access to a Photoshop installation - you won’t always need it!

I hope this tutorial will inspire you to take some new photos for our gallery!

Thank you for giving us an interview! Thank you - I thought you’d never ask! Why don’t we start from the start: Tell us about your first Barbie ever. She was some late 80’s Chic Barbie in a pink dress, one of the Superstar-faced ones. I remember vividly staring at her at the toy shop, and how happy I was when I got her. I’m sure she’s still somewhere stored away - but in pieces. I wasn’t too gentle with them at the time but I learned fast and most of them are still intact. How about a childhood memory about Barbie? I’ve got s many! What I remember best is countless of doll parties that I played with my sisters. The party started for whatever reason and always lasted over night. In the morning, all Barbies woke up hung over on the party room floor. Drunken uninvited guests were more a rule than an exception. I dealt with these things in early teen-age, so I never had to actually do that myself. How did you become a collector? During the fall 2006 I found a Finnish language Barbie-blog and then this website that was then called Barbie Scale. I noticed that Barbies weren’t just a kid’s thing. I knew about collector dolls, and I wanted them when I was a kid, but I thought they were meant only to stand on shelves. I had always liked making clothes for Barbie, so my first project was to get a couple of Fashion Fever -dolls to work as mannequins, but soon after I bought my first collector doll: Princess of Ancient Greece. I’m very interested about Greece mythology, and the doll looked great posing in front of my Matriculation Certificate. Are you more a doll collector, doll artist or -hobbyist, or everything equally? Judging by the amount of dolls I’ve go I’m a collector, but on the other hand I debox them all so that would make me a hobbyist? I am thinking about slowing down on the collecting and focussing more on the customising part. I get nearly all of them for customising anyway, so maybe I am more a doll artist after all?

You are an amazingly talented customizer, what tip would you give to someone who is just starting out with repaints? Thank you - and the answer: the camera. A camera is a solution for everything. While I paint, I take numerous photos of the face, because a photo will reveal the smallest of flaws in the face that you can’t see with a naked eye. You don’t even have to remove them from the camera, just zoom in to look. It is also good to paint a little bit at a time and leave it stand around somewhere where you see it every day. In a few days you’ll know what needs fixing. It is easier to add to than remove, so it pays to be patient. Are you otherwise artistic - what does one need to know to be able to paint like Aurora? I’ve done arts my whole life, mainly drawing. It is easier to create a realistic face on a doll than on paper, because the 3D-base. The form is ready, so the only thing that needs doing are the details. I don’t think you have to be a true artist to be able to paint a doll face, but it helps to be able to draw a realistic face on a paper. The eyes are the most important part when painting a face, because they dictate the whole expression. If you can get the eyes right, everything else will follow. The light spots in the eyes are important, as you can easily change the direction of the eyes with them.

Mini-Mika

You have created several regulars on the forum, and the first ones that come to mind are Christabel and Mini Mika. We’ll hear more about Christabel in the doll introduction, but tell us a little something about Mini Mika! He’s my pride and joy. I consider it my best work of art ever. I like the British pop singer Mika’s music, and value him as a person, so I wanted him to be a part of my doll world. Mattel’s prince doll Aidan seemed like the best match with his skin tone and facial structure, so that’s where I started. I rerooted most of his hair, but that was just the beginning as I ended up repainting him five times before I was happy. I was never completely satisfied, and I didn’t have time to paint every week, so the transformation took me a full 11 months to complete! I was going to keep the doll myself, but after I posted it on the Mika Fan Club’s forum, the positive feedback I got gave me a thought that maybe Mika would like to have his own mini-me. At the nick of time I decided I’d take the doll with me to the next gig in London, that was last summer. I made him clothes and a box and completed the face only 2 weeks before the trip. If I hadn’t given him to Mika, I’m sure I’d still be perfecting him. He said the doll was amazing, so I believe it to be in a good home. Do you have a favourite doll? Yes, it’s a Fashion Royalty doll I customized; Caliste. She’ll be a Viking, and is almost done. My favourite Barbie at the moment is a hybrid of the Tango Barbie and Jazz Baby, who I call Melody, she’s nearly done as well. All my dolls have names, they are more than dolls: Actors and actresses in my stories. How much more do you love the dolls you’ve customised compared to the original dolls, or is there a difference? Oh most definitely there’s a difference! The more time I spend on a doll, the more I love one. That’s why I sometimes miss Mini Mika terribly. *Sigh* I don’t regret giving him up, but I’ll need one for myself. The next version is in the workshop. Do you buy OOAK-dolls made by other doll artists? I haven’t yet, because they cost quite a lot, but I know a lot that I really admire. I would gladly take one into my collection, but I’m not sure if I could value them as much as they deserve. This might sound a bit self-centred, but I think I enjoy the process more than the end-result. That’s why I prefer to do them myself. Having said that I could sell my own if there was buyers.

Do you have an ”avatar doll”, one that would be your ”mini-me”. I’m working on one. She’ll be a plastic surgeon! At the moment though, she’s more in a need of a surgeon herself! Do you ”play” with your dolls? If you do, how do grown up play differ from child’s play? I don’t think I am playing with friends anymore, I think I would though if there was another collector nearby! The Lahti meet up was a great opportunity to play with adults! They are different to children's; they contain more dress up, display and posing - often for photographs. I’ve heard a claim that children have a better imagination than adults, but I haven’t noticed any difference in myself compared to my younger years. What I HAVE noticed is that now I’m able to actually make my ideas to reality. To me the play is about telling a story and the dolls are the actors and actresses of a screen play. Before I buy a doll, I already consider a role for him or her and what their name will be. I have passed on many gorgeous dolls because they’re too beautiful to be customised to the character I need but who don’t fit into the story the way they are. Some dolls simply refuse to tell me their life story until I start working on them. Is it okay to play if you’re an adult, or do we always have to use quotes when we speak of it? Yes it’s okay, and it can be called a play. It’s just different kind. What do your dolls tell about you? I know they tell at least that I have an obsession about irises! I want them to be exactly the right size, because I want my dolls to be as realistic looking as possible. My doll world has a lot of different sort of characters, so I suppose that’s a sign of a good imagination - or multiple personalities disorder! I can always identify with my dolls on same level, even my male dolls. I like my male dolls as much as my girls. As most of them are customised, I suppose they tell a thing or two about my taste in men as well! Thank you for the interview Aurora - I know I had a few ”eureka-moments” while reading, and I hope this will encourage our readers to try their hand in customising dolls! I know I’ll have to try that camera -trick! Sebastyne

A Heart Divided by Six If a heart that is only one sixth of size gets broken, is it any less broken than a full size

one? Therefore theBzine is now starting a new column to delve into the relationships of

our dear friends. It offers a possibility of sharing anonymous correspondence, poetry,

and confessions. You can reply to the letters or write your own, ask and we will answer.

After all, we’re all plastic. Sonja replies.

Hi Sonja I decided to write to you as I don’t think anyone would quite get me the same way you would. I am mint condition collector Barbie. It doesn’t matter which one I am, that is irrelevant, but I do need to tell that I am hopelessly in love with a Ken - and I think he feels the same way about me. I have never been able to talk to him though, as... We are both still in our mint condition boxes. He doesn’t have a computer or cell phone in is box like I do, and he has no contact to the outside world like I do. During the nights he looks incredibly depressed, during the day he is all smiles, as we all have to. His box is all the way on the other side of the room and I can’t shout hard enough for him to hear! I am hopeless! I don’t think we’ll ever be released from our boxes. What could I possibly do so I could live my life with him? I would give anything to sit on a shelve with him as free dolls - or at least be put next to each other in our boxes so we could talk. I would like to keep him smiling like he smiles during the day, all the time, without him having to force a smile on his face. I know we would be happy together, but I don’t know how it could possibly happen! Our owner does like us, and she’s proud of us, but she can’t hear us. And she thinks we have no feelings. :( Tears of Vinyl Dear Tears of Vinyl, Your story is a common one, but not any less heart breaking than the most unusual love stories of our times! The Barbie-doll liberation front is doing a tireless job to free dolls like you, but there is a lot to be done - and that won’t help your situation much anyway. You need to come up with a way to send a message to your loved one. Look into the boxes of the other dolls and see if they have computers closer to your beloved. Then ask them to relay your message by shouting from box to box until it reaches your beloved... Ask them to pronounce things clearly and use easy to understand language so the message doesn’t get too twisted on the way! If you could get his attention I’m sure you could then plan for possible solutions to be together - if he indeed returns your feelings. Please do write to us and let us know how your situation evolves and how both of you are doing. - Sonja- Greetings from the prior centuries, Where I still live - I feel! I am a Silkstone Ken, and I am in a relationship with a gorgeous playline-lady. Our owner acts as if she was blind and deaf to our love, no

matter how meaningful glances we point each other’s way while standing still on the shelve. Our owner pretends not to notice and places me hand in hand with a Silkstone-girl here. She is a good friend of mine, but a relationship to her feels ridiculous, and she feels the same way about me. She is in love with a more suitable fellow, a Silkstone Ken, but that doesn’t help her much. She’s stuck with me and I’m stuck with her and my sweet playline girl is forced to sit in a company of girls! I’m not too upset about that of course, I think I would be so jealous I would break in my seams if I would have to look at her with another bloke! She is tired with the whole girly competition going on in there, as she got caught up in all the drama without wanting to. How can I make our owner see that we are meant to one another even though we are of a different race? Too Good to Be Loved Dear Too Good to Be Loved, I can see why you are frustrated! I think this calls for the big guns! Next time your owner comes by, what if you would have moved next to your loved one or even ”fallen over” with her? That kind of things amuse people, even though they might think some adolescent has come and played a trick with you dolls, because ”dolls don’t move by themselves!” (HAH!) If you repeat the trick a few times without any teens around -if possible - maybe the most thick headed of owners will understand that she can’t stand in the way of true love. Be bold and move, I believe that if you bring out your feelings, your owner will see things your way - I am sure she doesn’t keep you apart out of spite! - Sonja- Send your letter or email to theBzine with an id ”A Heart Divided by Six”

Barbie Börse 8. Mai 2010

Which is German for a whole day shopping for Barbie! We had been waiting for it like lovers wait for the rising moon, after we saw the photos and heard the stories of Mimosa, KiteCat, Milli and Arabella, when they made the trip in 2009 event.

Read Vivi’s report on the next page

After hearing all the stories, the seed was planted: I must get there one day, and when I do, the wallet must be happy to comply! We started our preparations by booking tickets and the hotel in January. The time we had to wait until the beginning of May seemed endless, but as always, it arrived eventually. Kitecat and her husband flew in the Tuesday before the event, and I followed suit with my husband on Friday. In Bremen we took the train to Hamburg, where KiteCat and her husband were waiting. After some time of walking around and after driving one block in the metro because ”it was so far away” we got a rental car and started towards Hitfeld. The place itself was an experience. The houses and yards were like from a fairytale and the surroundings were beautifully cared for. The gardener in me was very impressed. The rest of the evening was spent admiring the town and after dinner we travellers were all ready to turn in. What was to be seen the following day was playing on our minds and imagination, and I was still worried I might not have enough money on me. In the morning KiteCat and I were up early in the morning and the breakfast conversation contained mainly Barbie-stuff. Being the early birds we were at the door exactly at 9:30, amongst the first to arrive. A fabulous diorama of a disco was greeting us at the door with customised dolls and clothes and a few sales tables. All this was just the prelude though... In the ”selling hall” we found a long row of tables, that were struggling under the weight of all the doll things on them. Both ends of the hall was overpowered by tall shelves of NRFB-

dolls with all sorts of bits and pieces stuck in every available little corner. I was especially impressed by the amount of vintage-dolls and -clothes available. Unfortunately, as I don’t collect vintage myself, I didn’t check the price range in Germany. There was some rare dolls on display: Platinum Label -Barbies, Convection- and Fan Club exclusives. I was very tempted to buy Splash of Silver Barbie myself, but fortunately someone else had time to collect it into their tender care before I got back round to it. All of the rarities found a new home to go to. The event organizers, the boys of CoverGirl Designs was most definitely one of my big favourites. They were selling dolls, OOAK-outfits for Fashion Royalty and Barbie. In addition they had a massive amount of FR-accessories, which turned out to be the death of a big portion of my budget. I have always been a sucker for detailed high quality clothing and hand bags, and this was no exception. I was looking at the OOAK-outfits with a keen interest, but managed to pull myself away from them in a nick of time. Another thing I found extremely exciting was to rummage through the sellers’ big boxes of Barbie clothes, that offered clothes from all price ranges from a few cents to a few tenners. Also on offer there was a few mint-condition vintage-sets, and the price was as to be imagined. The boxes offered a big part of my shopping, and in some cases the bonus gifts were nearly as good as the purchase itself! For bigger size fashion doll collectors there was also some treats on offer: One seller had all

Tonner-dolls you could wish for, both clothed and nude. It was nice to see them in ”vinyl” and it eased my desire to have one myself... But that situation has taken a turn back to worse since then. Things that I could have maybe spent more time studying was offer of clothing sets, shoes and other accessories... But there’s always next year. All-in-all it was a fantastic experience and we lived off the Barbie buzz almost throughout the whole day, but we did skip the after party as we ran out of energy. It would have been nice to get to know some local collectors and change ideas and thoughts, but our hungry men and empty purses were forcing us to return to the hotel sooner rather than later. After eating and a bit of a breather we were all excited again and had to sit down to rummage through our shopping's and dress our new dolls. A Barbie-hang over didn’t come until a few days later... ;) Photos and text: Vivi

Christabel was born out of Mattel’s Lois Lane -doll. I had already done up one Lois Lane doll, resulting into a character named Romola. I like this unusual face mould, so I divided to make Romola a sister. Romola is sweet and a little naive, so I wanted her sister to be fiercer. I usually like to make my dolls look naturally beautiful, but this one needed severe black eyeliner. At this phase, I had cut her hair short for rerooting, and she looked mysterious, so I named her after the song Crystal Ball by Keane. Christabel is spelled differently, but sounds nearly the same. Her nearest model is Snow White’s evil step mother. On the other hand, I wanted her smile to be mysterious like Mona Lisa’s. Chritabel has a bit of Disney’s Magica de

Spell (of Donald Duck) in her. Like Magica, Christabel isn’t a real witch, but is similarly obsessed. Christabel is incredibly unpredictable and self-cantered, the polar opposite to her sister Romola. She has a lot of skeletons in her closet (literally, maybe!), but we haven’t discovered them all. It is not a good idea to mess with Christabel. Both of the sisters are fashion models at a fashion house named Eden’s Creations. Romola has been working there for years, and her older sister Christabel joined the team last autumn. Christabel is now 32-years old. A veil of mystery covers what she was doing before she joined the fashion house. They say she run some sort of a company. My doll Johnny was also involved with the company, but left once he realised it wasn’t

In the doll introductions we will get to know the doll with a bad reputation. She is none other than Aurora’s Christabel. Where did she come from, where is she going to and for how much money would Aurora let her go? Aurora tells us the whole story:

Doll In

exactly run by the book. Christabel and me are similar in our assertiveness to reach a goal. However, Christabel has done and does a lot of things I don’t approve off! Once more I’m making my dolls do stuff I would never do myself, but what I might have wanted to do but wouldn’t because for example, it’s illegal.. I would not part with Chirstabel too easily, because she has become too big part of my doll world’s cast of characters. I could maybe sell her for a sum of 500 Euros, which is about the going price of OOAK dolls on eBay. For that, I could buy a few more dolls to work on, but of course a copy will never be quite like the original. In addition, I’m particularly pleased with her eyelashes, which is the hard part to work on and can only be achieved when the brush is nearly worn out. I believe painting with an airbrush might be easier, but I haven’t tried one again because of their price. Come to think of it, if I’d sell Christabel for 500 Euros, I

would get a pretty decent air brush. I still don’t know if that would be enough, nor do I know if anyone would pay that much for her. She has been one of my quickest repaints, but not one of the easiest. Christabel is also working on other projects other than working as a model. She will be the hostess of the show Mr Ken, which will be a competition between my male dolls. Before that the show Social Climbers will be on, in which Christabel will play a part, and a cabaret by the name of Good Gone Girl, and Christabel will be playing the lead role as the bad girl. This cabaret doesn’t really belong to my doll world in any way, but the dolls will be given new temporary roles. Aurora

Enja’s Tip On the northern hemisphere we had the chance to enjoy very summery and even uncomfortably warm weather. For the next heat wave we’ll be ready with the following trick: Rinse the insides of your elbows in cold water for some time and splash the water on your arm. The cold water will cool down the blood through the arm’s thin skin and thus cooling down your whole body. This is a temporary relief, but it is easy to repeat when necessary, almost anywhere you are.

As you probably remember of the previous episode of Life Lessons, the lesson had to do with realising your dreams and recognising the rising opportunities and grabbing them with both hands. They gave a good example of this by buying a house on a whim. These days, the best way to locate the two is to check the bottom floor of the house and more specifically the work shop, where they are very likely putting together useful and sometimes quite useless bits and pieces. Lately, they've been working on bird houses. (Or actually just Afro Uncle, as Euro Uncle managed to fumble with the hammer and has to settle to the role of an entertainer.

Life Lessons by Retirees

Page 21: theBzine 2010-6 English

Www.theBdoll.com—theBzine 6/2010 21

Yesterday their bird house project faced a serious set back. They arrived in the morning to their work shop, and found their sanctuary violated. The contents of their fridge had been spread on the floor, even the shelves! The Uncles are not too surprised, as you can remember the house once was occupied by all sorts of low life, so they put two and two together and were quite certain it is the same villains responsible for this mess. The only thing they found truly surprising was that the drinks had not been opened, even though they had been removed from the fridge.

The Uncles decided not to give in to vandals, and decided that tonight, they would be ready and waiting... They had read enough crime stories to know that the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime. Trusting that, they camped in the downstairs lobby, right behind the work shop door, ready for action as soon as things started to develop. And develop it did! In the middle of the night both Uncles woke up to a loud bang and rattle. They were up in an instant, swung the door open and switched the lights on. And this is what they saw....

Page 22: theBzine 2010-6 English

A less informed pair would have not believed their eyes, but as you can tell from the first photo, Euro Uncle had just brushed up on his knowledge by reading “Tin-Tin in Tibet”. As we all know, the spritely reporter meets a snow man in the Himalayas. As they are well educated about other things as well, they, still standing at the door, come to the quick conclusion that the melting of the ice sheets in the Northern pole and the exceptionally harsh winter in Northern Europe must have caused the poor creature to get confused of his location. Now that the summer arrived, the poor fellow had to seek for comfort in the Uncles fridge.

And this is exactly the kind of a situation that you can trust the help and understanding of the Uncles. They solved the problem in their manly manner by sitting down for a helpful beer. As the Snow Man did not care for beer, Afro Uncle offered him some cooling ice cubes instead.

Page 23: theBzine 2010-6 English

Www.theBdoll.com—theBzine 6/2010 23

During the night the Uncles remembered that behind the shed in the shadow, there was still a pile of unmelted snow. They quickly stored the snow into a pile of saw dust, such as they used to when they were boys. This way, they would be able to offer the Snow Man some cooling portions of snow all throughout the summer. This way the Snow Man crashed his way into the lives of the Uncles - and Aunties too, but they don’t know it yet. And the life lesson you’ve all been waiting for resulting from this experience is very serious one:

“Work against the climate change the best you can -

or start considering where would you house a snow man?”

Next Issue To send material to theBdoll Newsletter, please do the following: For articles: Send in email body, no formatting is required but can be helpful. There are no length restrictions; the newsletter is in e-form so it will be made to fit the content, not the other way around. I might edit the articles in order to streamline them a bit though. For photos: Send the original size file, if editing is needed (for cartoon-bubbles for example) please do that before resizing the photo for the web, and send the bigger version of the photo. I may do some additional editing to get the photo colours balanced and the like. If you are confident that your editing is spot on, please let me know and I won’t touch it! To become a team member: Send me your idea for your column, pages or whatever you want to call them in an email to [email protected] All materials should be sent by 30.6.
