THE WILD BUNCHSATURDAY, MARCH 19 AT 7:00PM

e Loft is proud to announce that in early December we upgraded our lm projection capabilities. While most of our presentations are now digital, we have maintained a strong commitment to projecting 35mm lm whenever possible. But as lm prints become rarer, the list of lms we are able to project on 35mm is getting smaller. e Loft recently installed a dual Norelco DP75 system, which now allows us new access to entire libraries of 35mm lms.

In addition, we are incredibly excited to announce that we’re bringing 70mm technology back to Tucson! We know that once you see the dierence between 70mm and all other formats, you’ll wish you could see every lm this way—with over three times the level of detail of 35mm and about double the detail of 4K digital, this is truly the ideal lmgoing experience. We’ll kick o with a special screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey, followed by Lawrence of Arabia in February, and e Wild Bunch in March.

“Kubrick’s masterpiece is above all a big screen experience. Seeing 2001 on a big screen in 70mm is one of a handful of obligatory experiences during a lm lover’s lifetime.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

ree million years ago, a mysterious black monolith appeared out of nowhere and gave a pack of unruly apes a whole lot of new ideas … and thus begins Stanley Kubrick’s awe-inspiring sci- head trip,  2001: A Space Odyssey. Based on Arthur C. Clark’s story “e Sentinel,” this mind-blowing meditation on technology and humanity thrillingly hypothesizes mankind’s evolution from ape to astronaut to celestial being, while scientists Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) do battle with a snarky articial intelligence unit named HAL and eventually try to crack the mystery of those baing black monoliths. With assistance from special eects expert Douglas Trumbull, Kubrick spent over two years meticulously creating the most “realistic” depictions of outer space ever seen, greatly advancing cinematic technology in service of a story expressing grave doubts about technology itself. Eschewing traditional narrative structure and embracing a tone of mythic transcendence, 2001, provocatively promoted as “the ultimate trip,” quickly caught on with the late ‘60s counterculture audience open to a contemplative viewing experience of a lm carefully designed to take them on an journey they would never forget. Nominated for four Academy Awards and a winner for its landmark visual eects, 2001 stands today as one of the all-time great science ction classics. (Dir. by Stanley Kubrick, 1968, USA/UK, 141 mins., Rated G)

SATURDAY, JANUARY 2 AT 7:00PMREGULAR ADMISSION PRICES

Prepare to dance magic dance as we ring in the New Year with a late-night screening of Jim Henson’s 1986 fantasy classic, Labyrinth! rough dangers untold and hardships un-numbered, we know you’ve been patiently waiting to party with David Bowie and all his Goblin pals on e Loft’s big screen. Well, the 13th hour will strike enough! Featuring a Labyrinth Costume Contest before the movie (time to break out those capes and cod pieces!), pre-show Bowie music videos, fun goodies to use during the movie and a free champagne toast at midnight! And don’t forget to wear a “Masquerade Ball” mask less you miss out on all the magic! But fear not: we’ll also have a “make your own mask” table where you can craft your own mask on the spot, while supplies last!

e movie starts promptly at 11:45pm, so that Sarah’s introduction to the Labyrinth and the Goblin King’s 13 Hour Clock will happen right at the stroke of midnight!

Sulky fteen-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) is so resentful of her baby brother Toby that she hopes he will just disappear. Her dream becomes reality when goblins kidnap the boy--but Sarah unexpectedly nds herself horried by the loss. So she sets forth to retrieve him, and nds herself on the adventure of a lifetime. To accomplish her goal, she will somehow have to reach the center of the fantastical Labyrinth where the wicked, baby-stealing Goblin King, Jareth (David Bowie, who performs two songs and wears one of the greatest leather jumpsuit/cape/cod piece combos of all-time) has imprisoned the lad. But the task is easier said than done, for the maze is lled with strange creatures, mind-bending puzzles and dangerous obstacles (like the Bog of Eternal Stench!) that threaten to keep Sarah apart from her brother forever! Directed by Muppet-master Jim Henson, produced by George Lucas and penned by Monty Python’s Terry Jones, Labyrinth is a distinctive, beautifully designed (love that MC Escher-inspired staircase!), and often freaky dark fantasy for all ages. (Dir. by Jim Henson, 1986, USA, 101 mins., Rated PG)

$200 MONTHLY GRAND PRIZE!$1,000 YEARLY GRAND PRIZE!

On the rst Friday of each month at 9:00pm,  Red Meat’s  Max Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short lm contest in town – just bring us your short lms and we’ll play them on the largest movie screen in Southern Arizona! In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here are the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under 15 minutes long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive or BLU-ray (one lm per person, and DVDs must be playable on a regular DVD player and lms on drives need to be in by 8:00pm). Submissions are only taken on the day of the event, and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACTUAL SHOW (we cannot accept lms after the show has begun, or during intermission). All lms are played in the order they’re received. Every lm is guaranteed to play for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck, our intrepid host stops the lm and the next movie begins. But don’t despair … if your lm is gonged, you can re-work it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have pleased the audience. is is a great way for lmmakers to try out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so take advantage. You cannot submit the same lm more than once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy! PLEASE NOTE: We only take the rst 15 lms that are brought in each month and the spots have been lling up really fast. We start taking submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your lms in early! PLEASE BE ADVISED: Since we don’t pre-screen First Friday Shorts entries, we don’t know what each month’s “lm content” rating will be. Be advised that some material may not be suitable for all audiences.

Congrats to Bryan McAdams and Mac Benning who tied for best short at December’s First Friday Shorts. Both lmmakers will move on to the year end showdown in May.

“A fun trip into Peanuts land… this 1977 feature-length cartoon has aged remarkably well, and it can still charm modern audiences.”- Ed Liu, Toon Zone

In this funny and thrilling feature-length cartoon based on the beloved “Peanuts” characters created by comic-strip artist Charles M. Schultz, the whole gang is shipped o to summer camp, where Charlie Brown gets a “Go away and leave me alone” bunkmate, and where his beagle pal Snoopy ends up winning most of the athletic trophies. e Snoop also has a running feud with a mean-spirited pussycat. Meanwhile, budding feminist Lucy organizes an anti-boy campaign amongst the girl campers. But the big event at Camp Remote is the annual river rafting race. e Peanuts gang builds a raft to enter the dangerous shoot-the-rapids race, but they are going to have to face their greatest adversaries: a gang of bullies who always win the race thanks to their reputation for pulling dirty tricks and cheating. is year proves no dierent, and Charlie Brown will have to overcome his lack of condence if his team is to have any hope of winning! 9 SPECIAL ENGAGEMENTS

PART OF OUR LOFT STAFF SELECTS SERIESA monthly series showcasing lm favorites chosen by our amazing Loft Cinema sta! is month’s Loft Sta Selects lm was chosen by Jason Denholm, Director of eatre Operations!

“A delightfully exotic documentary… strange and wonderful.” – Janet Maslin, New York Times

is highly original and gloriously obeat documentary, from Oscar-winning lmmaker Errol Morris (e Fog of War), is succinctly described by the director himself as “the ultimate low-concept movie – a lm that utterly resists the possibility of a one line summary.” Fast, Cheap & Out of Control brilliantly interweaves the stories of four obsessive men, each driven to create eccentric worlds of their dreams, all involving animals: Dave Hoover, a lion tamer who shares his odd theories of the mental processes of wild animals; George Mendonca, a topiary gardener who has devoted a lifetime to painstakingly shaping bears and giraes out of hedges and trees; Ray Mendez, who is fascinated with hairless mole rats; and Rodney Brooks, an M.I.T. scientist who has designed complex, autonomous robots that can crawl like bugs without specic instructions from a human controller. As the lm proceeds, fascinating thematic connections between the four men begin to emerge, peppered with healthy doses of surreal hilarity, in ways that only Errol Morris could orchestrate. Funny, sad, eerie and beautiful, Fast, Cheap & Out of Control is a lm like no other – a darkly humorous contemplation of the Sisyphus-like nature of human striving that ultimately becomes a profoundly moving mediation on the very nature of existence. (Dir. by Errol Morris, 1997, USA, 80 mins., Rated PG)

FAST, CHEAP & OUT OF CONTROL • 35MMSUNDAY, JANUARY 10 AT 7:00PM GENERAL ADMISSION: $6 • LOFT MEMBERS: $5

PART OF OUR ESSENTIAL CINEMA SERIESSee classic art lms the way they were meant to be seen - with an audience, on the big screen!

“An endearingly pointy-headed comedy of manners… you’ll probably end up wistful for a pre-sele era.” – David Edelstein, New York Magazine

An ironically comic look at Manhattan’s endangered debutante scene, Metropolitan chronicles the rise and ultimate decline of a group of high-minded young Park Avenue socialites who gather nightly to discuss love, honor and the impending demise of their class. Whit Stillman’s seminal, sparkling comedy of manners introduced audiences to the “UHBs” (urban haute bourgeoisie), those mordantly ironic socialites too highbrow for their own good, and in the process brought a class-conscious verbal air to 1990s independent cinema. Home on winter break during the debutante season, middle-class Princeton student Tom (Edward Clements) falls in with the “Sally Fowler Rat Pack,” a group of Upper East Side friends named for the girl (Dylan Hundley) whose apartment they use for after-hours parties. As naif Tom is accepted into the group, he becomes smitten with Audrey (Carolyn Farina) while struggling with his feelings for his ex-girlfriend Serena (Elizabeth ompson), and batting declarations of grandeur from conservative Charlie (Taylor Nichols) and deluded dandy Nick (Chris Eigeman). Amid all the ensuing drinking, debating and comedic class anxiety come the pangs of love, self-discovery and the rst fumblings toward growing up. Writer/director Stillman’s deft, literate dialogue and hilariously highbrow observations earned his debut feature an Academy Award-nomination for Best Original Screenplay, and his wryly detached yet intimate worldview, infused with clear aection for his characters, would continue to impress in his follow-up lms, including 1994’s Barcelona and 1998’s e Last Days of Disco. (Dir. by Whit Stillman, 1990, USA, 98 mins., Rated PG-13)

“Inspirational… moving… undeniably powerful.” – Jordan Mintzer,  Hollywood Reporter

Anne Gueguen is determined to give the best education she can to her underprivileged inner-city pupils, but overcoming their apathy is more dicult than expected. Lessons from the Holocaust prove to be a potent teaching tool in the hands of this skilled educator, however, and enable her students to see themselves – and others- in a new light. Based on a true story, this inspiring lm celebrates the power of education and the importance of cooperation and coexistence in our rapidly changing world.  (Dir. by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, 2014, France, in French with subtitles, 105 mins., Not Rated)

“Whether you lived through the civil rights movement or not, the marvelously musical Soundtrack for a Revolution will leave you deeply moved and humming.” – James Verniere, Boston Herald

“e lm puts a fresh spin on the issues and struggles of the civil rights movement.” – Jennie Punter, Globe and Mail

Soundtrack for a Revolution  tells the story of the American civil rights movement through its powerful music – the freedom songs protestors sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons,  and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. e lm features stirring performances of the freedom songs by top artists, including John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean, e Roots, Richie Havens, Blind Boys of Alabama and more; riveting archival footage; and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers and leaders, including Congressman John Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Julian Bond, and  Ambassador Andrew Young. e freedom songs evolved from slave chants, from the labor movement, and especially from the black church. e music enabled African Americans to sing words they could not say, and it was crucial in helping the protestors as they faced down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence.  e infectious energy of the songs swept people up and empowered them to ght for their rights.  Soundtrack for a Revolution  celebrates the passionate vitality of this music.  Executive produced by Danny Glover, the lm is a vibrant blend of heart-wrenching interviews, dramatic images and thrilling contemporary performances. (Dir. by Bill Guttentag & Dan Sturman, 2010, USA, 82 mins., Not Rated)

Water – a living substance, the most common and least understood. It dees the basic laws of physics, yet holds the keys to life. Inuences such as sound, thoughts, intention, and prayer, as well as toxins such as chlorine, structure water’s molecular arrangement, aecting all it comes in contact with.  In this new documentary, prominent scientists help reveal the  secret of  water,  allowing us to use this amazing element to heal ourselves and our planet.  Featuring Nassim Haramein, Patrick Flanagan, Dr. Masaru Emoto, Konstantin Korotkov, Lynne McTaggart, Larry Dossey, and many others.  (Dir. by Saida Medvedeva & Jirka Rysavy, 2015, USA/Austria/Japan/Russia/Venezuela, in English, 77 mins., Not Rated)

“Cinema can fill in the empty spaces of your life and your loneliness.” – Pedro Almodóvar

This January, The Loft celebrates wildly-subversive Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, whose bold, colorful and riotously funny films almost single-handedly put Spanish cinema on the

world map in the 1980s and ‘90s. Mixing together drag queens, nymphomaniacs, drug-addicted nuns, homicidal bullfighters, pornographers, punk rockers and more, Almodóvar gleefully concocted a delirious carnival of style, politics and unhinged sexuality unlike anyone before him in comedies like  What Have I Done to Deserve This?  and  Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.  Born in 1951 in La Mancha, the young Almodóvar gorged himself on a non-stop diet of florid Hollywood melodramas and Catholic school teachings – both of which would become major influences on his

career as a filmmaker.  Moving to Madrid in the early ‘70s, he worked as a telephone operator before gaining a growing reputation in the Madrid underground for his scandalously funny comic books and short stories, as well as his infamous Super-8mm shorts with titles like  Two Whores  and  The Fall of Sodom.    Playfully destroying stereotypical gender roles and conventional notions of good taste, Almodóvar’s early feature films, with their wild comedy and shocking excess, introduced the world to his singular sensibility, and a decades-long love affair between director and audience was born.      With his more recent films, including the Oscar-winning dramas  All About My Mother  and  Talk to Her,  Flower of My Secret  and Volver, Almodóvar (long one of cinema’s greatest champions of complex female characters) has combined the perverse brilliance of his earlier years with a profound, often heartbreaking understanding of the depth of human emotions.  The Loft Cinema proudly pays tribute to the one-and-only Pedro Almodóvar with a selection of some of his best and most defining films.

T H E F I L M S O F

PEDROALMODÓVAR

In All About My Mother, Almodóvar weaves together a magnificent tapestry of femininity with affectionate winks to classics of theatre and cinema in a poignant and often hilarious story of love, loss and compassion that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Displaying the filmmaker’s trademark penchant for extravagant melodrama, outrageous humor and highly-stylized aesthetics, All About My Mother also displays a strikingly vivid sense of melancholy and character-driven drama that makes this one of Almodóvar’s most emotionally-satisfying films. (Dir. by Pedro Almodóvar, 1999, Spain, in Spanish with subtitles, 101 mins., Rated R)

Almodóvar’s colorful and controversial tribute to the pleasures and perils of Stockholm syndrome, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! is a rambunctious dark comedy that pushes the boundaries of good taste in service of a surprisingly tender love story. A strikingly unconventional romance that is definitely not for the politically correct, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (which was slapped with an X rating by the MPAA in the days before the creation of the NC-17 rating) is a splashy, sexy central work in the career of one of the world’s most beloved and provocative auteurs. (Dir. by Pedro Almodóvar, 1990, Spain, in Spanish with subtitles, 102 mins., Rated NC-17)

Pedro Almodóvar followed the Oscar-winning success of All About My Mother with this offbeat and uniquely affecting drama exploring the friendship of two men brought together under unusual but strangely similar circumstances. Talk to Her is a surprising, altogether original and quietly moving story of the spoken and unspoken bonds that tie us together, masterfully orchestrated by Almodóvar, whose clever scripting earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. (Dir. by Pedro Almodóvar, 2002, Spain, in Spanish with subtitles, 112 mins., Rated R)

The hilariously off-kilter comedy that turned Pedro Almodóvar in an international cinema icon, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown weaves a madcap array of colorful characters into a frantic, wickedly funny, manic-depressive symphony. Co-starring Antonio Banderas, Women on the Verge is a riotous blend of crazed camp humor, over-the-top plot twists and garish production design, giving Almodóvar free rein to gorge on TV soap operas, tabloid news and Hollywood melodramas to concoct one of the funniest and frothiest war-of-the-sexes comedies ever made! (Dir. by Pedro Almodóvar, 1988, Spain, in Spanish with subtitles, 90 mins., Rated R)

“Feels unlike any movie of its era. is beautiful restoration polishes every canted angle and deep shadow to a glow… it looks like it was lmed yesterday!” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

Celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of Orson Welles with this rst-ever major restoration of the 1949 classic, e ird Man! Experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen!

In this stellar post-WWII thriller, pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) travels to shadowy postwar Vienna at the invitation of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime (Orson Welles), only to nd himself investigating his friend’s mysterious death … or so he thinks. us begins this twisting, subversive tale of love, deception, and murder, the likes of which have rarely been equaled in lm history. e great Orson Welles looms large in one of his most famous roles, as the charming but possibly homicidal rogue Harry Lime, arriving on screen in one of the greatest star entrances ever, and adding the famous “cuckoo clock” speech to the original screenplay by novelist Graham Greene. anks to brilliant performances, Anton Karas’s famously evocative zither score, Greene’s razor-sharp dialogue, and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Robert Krasker’s dramatically noir-ish use of light and shadow (which makes the still-ravaged Vienna, with its dark streets, frightening ferris wheels and dripping sewers, look like a Kafka novel come to life), director Carol Reed’s e ird Man has continued to grow in stature as the years pass. As Roger Ebert once rhapsodized, “e ird Man is one great shot after another. I’ve seen it 50 times and it’s still magic.” (Dir. by Carol Reed, 1949, UK, 93 mins., Not Rated)

Noma: My Perfect Storm is a creative journey into the unique mind of internationally-celebrated chef René Redzepi, and a fascinating look at the world’s most famous restaurant, NOMA. How did Redzepi (hailed by CNN as “the world’s most inuential chef”) manage to revolutionize the entire world of gastronomy, inventing the alphabet and vocabulary that would infuse newfound pedigree to Nordic cuisine and establish a new edible world while radically changing the image of the modern chef? His story has the feel of a classic fairy tale: the ugly duckling transformed into a majestic swan, who now reigns over the realm of modern gourmet cuisine. But beneath the polished surface, cracks appear in the form of old wounds. 2013 stands as the worst year in René Redzepi’s career. We follow him as he ghts his way back to the top, reinventing his acclaimed Copenhagen eatery NOMA and reclaiming the title of best restaurant in the world in 2014 for the fourth time. “Hugely entertaining and quite magical… a lm of huge ambition, intense political commitment and a love of humanity… and of storytelling.” –Jonathan Romney, Screen International

rillingly inventive, wildly ambitious, and as urgent as it is playful, this epic, three-part contemporary fable by acclaimed Portuguese lmmaker Miguel Gomes  (Tabu) adopts the structure from Scheherazade’s   “One  ousand and One Nights” to explore Portugal’s plunge into austerity. When a cowardly lmmaker (played by Gomes himself) abandons his daunting task to represent his country’s misery through cinema, he is replaced by Scheherazade, whose tales of woe and wonder are gathered in three tragicomic volumes.    e rst,  e Restless One, is a fantastical collection of tall tales that include appearances by cunning wasps, virgin mermaids, an exploding whale, erection-inducing potions, and a talking rooster.  Alternately shot in widescreen 16mm and 35mm,  Arabian Nights  punctuates its obeat, funny, and frequently moving reveries with powerful documentary footage.    Revealing a deeply rattled society wherein poverty, unemployment, drug addiction, and hopelessness are rampant, Gomes’ breathtaking triptych achieves transcendence by way of its good humor, heartfelt humanism, and awe-inspiring imagination.  (Dir. by Miguel Gomes, 2014, Portugal/France/Germany/Switzerland, in Portuguese with subtitles, 126 mins., Not Rated)

“e stories have an almost dreamlike sweep and imaginative energy, and the lm never exhausts that exuberance. More extraordinary still is its emotional depth.” – Calum Marsh, Village Voice

Acclaimed Portuguese lmmaker Miguel Gomes’ majestic, mutating modern-day folk tale, patterned after Scheherazade’s  One ousand and One Nights, continues in this second volume,  e Desolate One, which recounts how desolation has beset humanity through a trio of tales whose sheer storytelling ebullience stands in marked contrast to their dark subjects. “Chronicle of the Escape of Simao ‘Without  Bowels’” recounts the story of an unlikely hero: a fugitive mass murderer whose powers of evasion have made him a local legend.   Destiny and divinity are conjured by the light of three moons over an alfresco amphitheatre wherein a distressed magistrate presides over a succession of absurdist court cases (involving stolen cows and Chinese mail-order brides, among others) in “e Tears of the Judge.” e lm’s second half follows a Maltese poodle names Dixie as she is shuttled between sorrowful owners living in a concrete apartment block teeming with lethargy, eviction notices and copious cigarette smoke. Undoubtedly the runaway star of  Arabian Nights, over the course of her misadventures, Dixie remains forever luckless yet indiscriminatingly loyal. Speaking harsh truths about economic paranoia and societal morass,  e Desolate One  is the most wistful and heart-rending of the trilogy, balancing its eccentric dolefulness with intellectual gamesmanship, sensual delights aplenty, and a stellar soundtrack. (Dir. by Miguel Gomes, 2014, Portugal/France/Germany/Switzerland, in Portuguese/English/French/German/Mandarin with subtitles,131 mins., Not Rated)

“It’s dizzying stu, and virtually everything that Gomes tries his hand to works: it’s a lm that’s moving, sad, exciting, ery, and funny.” – Oliver Lyttelton, Playlist

e concluding volume of Miguel Gomes’ majestic, mutating modern-day folk tale nally sees our intrepid narrator, the winsome Scheherazade (Crista Aaiate), emerge in resplendent physical form, following her brief appearance as a mohawked punk inVolume One. A lush costume spectacle lled with delightful anachronisms,  e Enchanted One  opens in a sun-dappled Marseille masquerading as Baghdad, where the Grand Vizier meets with his tale-spinning daughter.    Her waning storytelling abilities reinvigorated by a much-needed, romance-lled escape to the exquisite Archipelago, Scheherazade launches into her nal tale, which tells of a community of bewitched, working-class bird-trappers who train chanches to sing for competition.  e most literary and ethnographic of the three lms,  e Enchanted One  transitions from the theatrical, Pasolini-esque stylings of its rst half to studied, documentary observation in its second, while oering a sly commentary on storytelling and its central role in our lives – how it ensures our survival by giving shape to our deepest fears and most fervent desires. Both wilfully sprawling and gently intimate, Gomes’ opus is a moving feat of cinematic freedom that – like the classic tales it evokes – is both of its time and forever enduring.   Coming to its wondrous end to the strains of mysterious and plaintive birdsong,  Arabian Nights  closes with the promise of the ineable.  (Dir. by Miguel Gomes, 2014,  Portugal/France/Germany/Switzerland, in Portuguese/English/French/German/Mandarin with subtitles,125 mins., Not Rated)

“Smart, thoughtful and elegantly done… a love letter to lm itself, to the value and lure of the cinematic experience.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

In 1962, François Truaut persuaded Alfred Hitchcock to sit with him for a week-long interview in which the great British director would share with his young admirer the secrets of his cinema. At the time, Hitchcock was dismissed by critics as a mere commercial entertainer. But a hugely inuential book called  Hitchcock/Truaut, which Truaut crafted from their conversation, forever changed Hitchcock’s reputation. Based on the original audio recordings of their meeting, this fascinating lm illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and plunges us into the world of the creator ofPsycho,  Vertigo  and  e Birds. As lmmaker Kent Jones highlights the discussion with thrilling clips from Hitchcock’s lms, Hitchcock’s incredibly modern art is elucidated and explained by 10 acclaimed contemporary lmmakers, including Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Arnaud Desplechin, Wes Anderson, Olivier Assayas and Richard Linklater.  Witty, insightful and wonderfully alive,  Hitchcock/Truaut  is a fascinating love letter to cinema, celebrating this fabled one-week encounter and 20-year friendship between two giants of lm history.  (Dir. Winner of four prizes at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, including the Grand Prix, Son of Saul  is set in October 1944 at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul (Géza Röhrig) is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination. While working in one of the crematoriums, Saul discovers the body of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child’s body from the ames, nd a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish and oer the boy a proper burial. With the camera primarily on Saul, viewers are plunged directly into the heart of a concentration camp.  Son of Saul  doesn’t tell the story of the Holocaust, but of one man caught in a dreadful situation. Forced to lose his humanity, he nds moral survival in the salvaging of the boy’s body. A stunning debut for rst-time director László Nemes, Son of Saul (Hungary’s Ocial Selection for Best Foreign Language Film consideration at the 88th Academy Awards), is a riveting, unforgettable experience. (Dir. by  László Nemes, 2015, Hungary, in Hungarian/Polish/Yiddish/German with subtitles, 107 mins., Rated R)

Q: THE WINGED SERPENT(Dir. by Larry Cohen, 1982, USA, 93 mins., Rated R)

“Its name is Quetzalcoatl… just call it ‘Q’… that’s all you’ll have time to say before it tears you apart!”

A huge ying lizard (known to its fans as the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl) lands in New York City and starts biting the heads o topless sunbathers and other rooftop residents while a twitchy ex-con tries to convince the cops that the winged freak is for real in this fun and funky ‘80s monster-thon throwback to the giant creature icks of the ‘50s.

“A totally fun urban monster movie with surprisingly good performances and cool stop-motion creature eects. Denitely check it out! – Grindhouse Cinema Database

THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION(Dir. by Bill Rebane, 1975, USA, 84 mins., Rated PG)

“Creeping! Crawling! Crushing!”

Giant spiders from outer space invade rural Wisconsin and terrorize the local redneck population in this mind-bogglingly awful combination of Hee Haw, Tarantula and screwy regional lmmaking from the mid-1970s – an infamous bad movie classic that dares to give us monstrous arachnids built out of old Volkswagens … with the wheels and headlights still showing! Call an exterminator AND a mechanic!

“An outrageous mix of 1950s giant monster motifs and backwoods 1970s sleaze, e Giant Spider Invasion holds a very special place in the hearts of bad movie lovers all over the world.” – DVD Drive-In

KING KONG VS. GODZILLA(Dir. by Ishiro Honda, 1962, Japan, badly dubbed in English, 91 mins., Not Rated)

“e most colossal conict the screen has ever known!”

Yes, the title says it all as the big ape and the radioactive lizard nally slug it out on Mount Fuji in this hilariously cheesy Japanese monster mash (featuring both of our plus-sized heroes on screen in glorious color for the rst time ever!) that also involves an angry octopus, lots of fake boulders and the destruction of many, many toy trucks.

“A bizarre lm full of ridiculously goofy moments… simultaneously one of the silliest Godzilla AND King Kong movies ever made.” – What Culture

THE FOOD OF THE GODS(Dir. by Bert I. Gordon, 1978, USA, 88 mins., Rated PG)

“Welcome to the bottom of the food chain!”

In this hysterically tacky shocker, VERY loosely based on the classic sci- novel by H.G. Wells, a motley group of B-list ‘70s actors are trapped on a Canadian island where a mysterious underground goo has transformed the normal wildlife population into over-sized freaks just itching to chow down on stupid humans, leading to some of the most ridiculously un-frightening battles between bad actors and giant wasps, rats and chickens (!) ever seen!

“is is great bad movie junk… its laughably shoddy not-so-special eects are just the tip of the iceberg. e fact that it’s all played so straight somehow makes it ever funnier.” – Oh, the Horror!

TURKISH STAR WARS(Dir. by Cetin Inanc, 1982, Turkey, dubbed in English, 91 mins., Not Rated)

e notorious Turkish rip-o to end all Turkish rip-os, Turkish Star Wars (aka e Man Who Saves the World) is a mind-warping, eye-popping, indescribable Grade Z cinematic “homage” to a certain blockbuster hit lled with evil wizards, lasers, skeletons on horseback and a blatant overuse of unauthorized footage from “that other movie.” A lm so amazing not even Ewoks could ruin it.

“Jaw-droppingly insane... a lm that makes criticism moot.” – Phil Hall, Film reat
