PIONEERING CAREDR. PETER CARROLL IS

FOR JOHN SHOEMAKER

Dr. Peter Carroll came to UCSF Medical Center to explore a less invasive treatment for prostate

cancer. John Shoemaker, diagnosed with that cancer, came to the UCSF Helen Diller Family

Comprehensive Cancer Center ready to go to extremes. But instead of the life-altering surgery

John was bracing himself for, Dr. Carroll recommended they proactively monitor the cancer

instead, leaving him living life to the fullest. At UCSF, innovative research by world-class medical

professionals is woven in with patient care every day. Visit PioneeringCare.com to read more.

From the Board ChairWelcome to TheatreWorks’ 45th season! When Robert Kelley

founded the company in 1970, he had no idea that within a fewdecades it would grow from a small community venture to a nationally respected professional theatre.

Even after 45 years, some people in our community have onlya fuzzy idea of what TheatreWorks is. After early years as a community theatre, the company grew by the 1990s into a much-acclaimed “regional theatre.” We are now the third largest theatre

in the Bay Area, most comparable to ACT and Berkeley Rep. Many of our actorslive in New York or Los Angeles, and travel here to play a particular role. Otherslive locally and appear in a variety of our productions over time. Virtually all aremembers of Actors Equity and full-time professional actors. The same is true forthe union musicians who make our musical performances so exquisite.

TheatreWorks will produce eight mainstage shows this year including oneworld and three regional premieres, as well as a 10-day New Works Festival of sixshows still in development (August 9–17). Our seasons are a diverse blend ofdrama, comedy, premieres, classics, and many musicals.

It can be a bit confusing that some of our productions happen here at theLucie Stern Theatre, and others at the Mountain View Center for the PerformingArts. But it gives us flexibility—we can take advantage of the strengths of eachvenue. Parking is free, with no long drive to San Francisco or Berkeley. And whenyou attend TheatreWorks, you not only see theatre of the highest caliber, you alsosupport the local community of artists, craftsmen, and restaurants.

Please look over our season brochure and pledge yourself to see at least three shows this season. I believe you will find an artistic home at TheatreWorks, just as I did almost 30 years ago. I would hate to miss even one production; they’re all different, all fascinating, all consistently great theatre that’s right here inour own backyard.

Each summer, TheatreWorks holds an intensive five-week, professional-level Conservatory for highschool students who are dedicated to the per-

forming arts and want to take their skill-set to the nextlevel.

As with summers past, the TheatreWorks NewWorks Conservatory creates a devised piece of theatrecentered on a common theme and this year, our groupof students will focus their creative energy aroundexploring the idea of “Generations.”

The hope is to discuss different generations of theatre, community, and connection, which will be recurring themes throughout TheatreWorks’ 45thanniversary season. During the course of creating thispiece, the Conservatory—comprised of Millennials—

From the Artistic Director

THE GREAT PRETENDER

I almost missed The Great Pretender last summer. It wasthe only show in our New Works Festival that conflictedwith my own rehearsals for another production. But once this “puppet show” had its first reading, my emailexploded, my phone messages overloaded, and a steady

stream of staff members filed into my office, all with the same demand:“you must see this show!” So…we revamped a bunch of schedules, I broke a few speed limits getting from our rehearsal hall to the Lucie SternTheatre, and I soon discovered what so many fans and friends ofTheatreWorks already knew: We must do this show!

I love puppets. I grew up watching something called Kukla, Fran, and Ollie, then Lambchop and Shari Lewis, even the early days of Sesame Street. At TheatreWorks we did many shows with puppets, especially musicals, from Carnival in the 70s to Little Shop of Horrors in the 80s, and our firstproduction of Sweeney Todd in the 90s that began and ended with a turn-of-the-century Punch and Judy show. More recently, both The 39 Stepsand The Hound of the Baskervilles included comic shadow puppets, andThe Secret Garden featured a wonderful robin that hopped about the set, even popping out of the orchestra pit! But David West Read’s engaging“puppet show” was entirely different; here at last was a play about thepuppeteers themselves.

More importantly, this dramatic comedy was about everyone who had eversuffered a deep personal loss and struggled to put back the pieces. It wasabout letting go, starting over, coming to grips with the past, about thepower and potential and difficulty of true friendship. These were complexadult issues confronting a team of artists dedicated to turning life’s conflictsinto easily digestible learning experiences for the young. I found their real-world challenges immensely moving, bittersweet, and utterly human. Theidea that our childhood TV heroes and heroines were real people with reallives is obvious now, but was incomprehensible back in the days when Ieagerly absorbed the life lessons they taught me each week on our 13-inchscreen. But now, these puppeteers on our stage had more intriguing lessons to share, grown-up lessons they first had to learn themselves, rightbefore our eyes. These Pretenders needed to premiere at TheatreWorks, needed to anchor our 13th New Works Festival, needed to launch this 45thAnniversary Season. Glad you could come.

We sat down with The GreatPretender playwright David WestRead to talk about puppets, theNew Works Festival, and writingabout the complexities of the grieving process.

TheatreWorks: What inspired The Great Pretender?

David West Read: With my firstplay, The Dream of the BurningBoy, I was exploring various manifestations of grief in the immediate aftermath of a suddenloss. That play was produced byRoundabout Theatre Company in New York, andwhen they commissioned me to write another play, Iknew I wanted to, in some way, examine a laterstage in the grieving process.

In particular, I was interested in the choices peoplemake in new relationships when they’ve lost a lovedone. Do you look for someone who reminds you of the person you’ve lost, or someone completelydifferent? Is it possible to fill some of the hole in yourheart with another person, or is that effort—to eventry to replace someone who can’t ever be trulyreplaced—ultimately fruitless and more painful thancomforting? These are some of the questions thatinspired The Great Pretender.

TW: How has the show changed since its inception?

DWR: The characters and general structure of theplay have basically been in place since the first draft, which I wrote as a student at The Juilliard Schoolabout two and a half years ago. Carol the Pony hasalways been a pony, Mr. Felt has always been Mr.Felt, and it has always been about how the new girlchanges the dynamic of the show when she takesover for Roy’s wife.

But with each successive draft I’ve focused more andmore on the relationships between Roy, Carol andTom. These are people who have known each othertheir entire working lives, and yet it takes the loss of

Speaking Directly to Camera: An Interview with Playwright

someone they all loved for them toform the kind of friendship that Caroland Tom have always wanted, andRoy has always needed.

TW: Are there any significantchanges since the version we sawin the 2013 New Works Festival? What did you learn from the audiences there?

DWR: There are no significantchanges to the plot, but the 2013New Works Festival audiences reallyhelped me deepen and enrich thecharacters and relationships,

and also cut away some of what wasn’t working aswell, especially with regard to the comedy, which youcan only really tell when you have an audience.

TW: Can you talk about the TV shows that TheGreat Pretender is based on?

DWR: The Mr. Felt show is meant to pay tribute toall the classic children’s TV shows that featured amiddle-aged host with puppet friends speakingdirectly to camera. That whole subcategory basicallydisappeared in the early-2000s, which is when theplay takes place—shows like Mr. Rogers’Neighborhood, Captain Kangaroo, and Lamb Chop’sPlay-Along.

The most direct influence on Mr. Felt was a showthat I grew up with in Canada called Mr. Dressup. Mr. Dressup would find a new costume in his “TickleTrunk” every day, and play games and make craftswith his puppet sidekicks: an androgynous childnamed Casey, and a non-speaking dog namedFinnegan. I loved it.

TW: There’s a lot of grief in The Great Pretender, and it’s not a children’s show…so why are puppets the best means to tell this story?

DWR: I was thinking a lot about the experience ofwatching The Muppets after Jim Henson died andnoticing the slight change in Kermit the Frog’s voice

as the new puppeteer took over. In theatre, understudies are often asked to take over a role and emulate the performance of the actor who has preceded them, but we can still see that it’s a newperson standing on the stage.

With a puppet, you can change puppeteers, but thepuppet itself looks the same, so the illusion is initiallymore successful. But then the puppet begins tomove and speak and you realize that it’s an extensionnot only of the puppeteer’s hands, but of the puppeteer’s personality, and without the originalpuppeteer, that can never be perfectly recaptured.

Throughout the course of The Great Pretender, Royattempts to treat Jodi like his own personal puppet, but finds that she can’t be so easily manipulated.

TW: Which of the characters do you identify withthe most?

DWR: Like Jodi, I grew up imitating whatever I sawon TV (Mr. Dressup in my case) and drove my familycrazy by taking apart the furniture and turning it intoforts. But I probably identify a little with all of thecharacters, including Meatball Moose.

TW: Did you have the Platters song “The GreatPretender” in mind while you were writing theplay?

DWR: Yes. I came up with the title The GreatPretender before I started writing the play, and Ithink the lyrics of that song really capture Roy’s stateof mind: “Too real is this feeling of make-believe…Pretending that you’re still around.” Like the subjectof that song, Roy puts on a brave face, but in theend, his imagination fails to save him from his grief.

TW: The 2014 New Works Festival is coming up inAugust. Do you have any words of wisdom foraudience members who are looking forward toattending? Or to those who have never heard ofthe Festival before?

DWR: The New Works Festival is a fantastic opportu-nity to see new plays and musicals at an early stagein their development, and to participate in that development with your feedback. I read all of thecomment cards after my readings, and the responsesI received from audience members really helped toguide my rewriting process.
