The Qatar Narratives series began in 2007 as an experiment, creating a space for the citi-zens and residents of Qatar to express themselves on the issues connected to moderni-zation of our Gulf state. We, the editors, met over the course of the second book Qatar: Then and Now. Maryam contributed an essay «They Say it’s A Different Life Now» which explores how gender preference still exists in Qatari society; Mohana helped co-edit the overall contributions. The response to the two essay anthologies was overwhelming as the books were given as gifts to friends at home and abroad. A growing enthusiastic group of essayists had their first taste of seeing their words in print.

The continued interest and frequency with which people began asking about the next title, both readers and contributors, had us thinking about other means to identify the unprecedented growth facing Qatar and those of us living through it. The idea of us-ing photography to discuss various aspects of life came naturally because visually the landscape of the country is changing from day to day. We wanted future generations to have glimpses of the history and the modernization process we experienced. The con-cept of a photo-essay allows one to document life in a visually arresting manner but also using a minimal choice of words to convey the moment depicted by the camera’s lens. Both words and images have their effects of expression and both reach out to and touch the reader/viewer in different ways.

In Dreesha we continue trying to gather a myriad of participants that reflects the multi-ethnic population that calls Doha home. This project is not only unique because of the wide range of scenery, objects, people, and landscapes reproduced within these pages, but also because of the photographers and editors themselves who are locals and resi-dents, men and women, professionals and students.

We would like to thank the contributors themselves and the staff at the Waqif Art Center in Souq Waqif for their support of the Qatar Narratives series and emerging talent. Without their establishment of the Finding Your Voice Fund which oversees the development of each title in the series, and their skills at distribution, these books would not have the prominence they enjoy at all local retail outlets.

Identifying locally based talent has become a trademark feature of the Qatar Narratives series and Dreesha is no exception. The pages that follow dazzle with unique approach-es and creativity as our photographers took their cameras to the streets and sands across the peninsula. When one considers that many of them are eager amateurs producing work parallel with more seasoned contributors, the opportunities this series provides for locally based artists is clear. One would be hard pressed to identify the differences be-tween a thirteen year old participant, amateur student enthusiasts, and those produced by the professional photographers.

Each photo-essay presented in the following pages, is a personal view of Qatar that highlights the mystery in the ordinary. We have placed them in sequence to weave a story. This story has many threads representing this specific moment in Qatar’s history when its population looks simultaneously forward with optimism and backward with longing. Some have chosen to reflect on social change, others on physical landscapes, and still others on architecture. We hope you enjoy this journey and are surprised to learn some new things about this very small but very diverse state.

اجتمع حمرروا �ضل�ضلة روايات من قطر اأثناء العمل على اجلزء الثاين من ال�ضل�ضلة » قطر ما بني املا�ضي

واحلا�ضر« و قد �ضاركت مرمي ال�ضبيعي مبقالة بعنوان » حياة خمتلفة الآن«. حاولت مرمي يف مقالتها بحث

ظاهرة التمييز بني اجلن�ضني والتي مازالت حا�ضرة يف املجتمع القطري. وقد �ضاهمت موهانا يف العداد

والتحرير ملجموعة املقالت امل�ضاركة يف هذا العدد. ا�ضتقبلت �ضل�ضلة روايات من قطر بحفاوة كبرية من

اجلمهور القطري واأي�ضا من املقيمني يف قطر حيث مت �ضراء اأعداد كبرية من الكتب واهدائها للأ�ضدقاء

يف قطر و يف اخلارج اأي�ضا حيث منح م�ضروع �ضل�ضلة روايات من قطر الفر�ضة للعديد من الكتاب

املتحم�ضني لروؤية نتاجهم البداعي مطبوعا للمرة الأوىل.

وعندما ازدادت ال�ضتف�ضارات من القراء واأي�ضا من الكتاب حول العنوان اجلديد لل�ضل�ضلة بداأنا التفكري

فعليا يف امل�ضروع القادم والذي اأردنا من خلله اأن نقدم نظرة خمتلفة للنمو الذي ت�ضهده دولة قطر الآن

من خلل روؤى معا�ضري ذلك التطور. ثم بداأت فكرة تقدمي امل�ضروع من خلل الت�ضوير الفوتوغرايف

وامكانية اأن تفتح كل �ضورة من ال�ضور امل�ضاركة نقا�ضات عديدة وخمتلفة. كانت ال�ضورة هى اأف�ضل

طريقة للتعبريعن التطور احلا�ضل يف قطر خا�ضة اأن �ضكل و�ضورة البلد تختلف كل يوم عن اليوم الذي

�ضبقه.وددنا اأن ترى الأجيال القادمة ملحة من تاريخ قطر املعا�ضر وعمليات التحديث والتطوير كما

�ضهدناها اليوم. فكرة املقالة امل�ضورة ت�ضمح لنا لي�س فقط بت�ضجيل لقطات من احلياة ولكن اأي�ضا بتو�ضيل

الأفكار وامل�ضاعر من خلل عدد قليل وحمدود من الكلمات. حيث تلم�س الكلمة وال�ضورة القارىء/ الناظر

بطرق خمتلفة .

حاولنا يف هذا امل�ضروع جمع عدد كبري ومتنوع من امل�ضاركني يعك�س لنا التنوع ال�ضكاين يف قطر حيث يوجد

الكثري من املقيمني مبختلف جن�ضياتهم، اأفكارهم وروؤاهم وهم جميعا يعتربون قطر وطنا لهم.

واأهمية هذا امل�ضروع ل ترجع فقط اإىل احتواء �ضل�ضلة روايات من قطر على عدد كبري ومتنوع من ال�ضور،

املناظر، املو�ضوعات والكتابات املختلفة ، لكن اأي�ضا اإىل وجود الكثري من امل�ضورين والكتاب املتميزين

والواعدين من الن�ضاء والرجال والأطفال والطلب واأي�ضا من املحرتفني الذين �ضاركوا يف هذا العمل.

يف م�ضروع �ضل�ضلة روايات من قطر حاولنا ال�ضتمرار يف اكت�ضاف املواهب القطرية .اإذ تظهر يف هذا

الكتاب مواهب متميزة يف التقاط ال�ضور والتعبري عنها بطرق خلقة ومبدعة. �ضور التقطت لرمال

و�ضوارع قطر. تعاون يف هذا امل�ضروع اجلديد من �ضل�ضلة روايات من قطر العديد من امل�ضورين املحرتفني

جنبا اإىل جنب مع العديد من املواهب ال�ضابة اجلديدة واملتحم�ضة. يف هذا الكتاب ت�ضعب التفرقة بني

ما التقطته عني م�ضور �ضغري يف الثالثة ع�ضرة من العمر وبني ما التقطته عد�ضة م�ضور حمرتف حيث

تت�ضافر املواهب على اختلف خرباتها وتنوعها يف هذا الكتاب لرت�ضم لنا �ضور فنية جميلة ومتنوعة.

احلا�ضل كل يوم. حاولنا ترتيب ال�ضور امل�ضاركة لتن�ضج ق�ضة ذات خيوط متعددة تعك�س هذه اللحظة

بعينها يف تاريخ دولة قطر يف وقت ينظر فيه �ضكان قطر بحنني اإىل املا�ضي وبتفاوؤل وا�ضرار اإىل امل�ضتقبل.

Abdulrahman Ahmed Al Subaiey

Abdularahman is a student at Omar Bin Al-Katab Prep School and the youngest of his 5 siblings. A very talented and profes-sional photographer and editor, yet very young. He is only 13 years old. He truly represents the new Qatari generation. Smart, ambitious and talented. He aspires to travel the world and dis-cover more of his talents.

It is not just a desert; it is not just a blue sky. And these are not mere old and new buildings.* People used to live in those magical ancient buildings and we can still see glimpses of their previous existence in them. Suddenly, tall shiny buildings have emerged and blocked their usual view of sunset. But it is still the same sun and the same sky. We can close our eyes and imagine the past, but we can also imagine the future and think of the new generations who will live in those unfinished shiny towers of glass.

عبدالرحمن عمره ثلثة ع�ضر عاما وهو طالب يف املرحلة العدادية يف مدر�ضة

عمربن اخلطاب. هو اأ�ضغر اإخوته اخلم�ضة. ظهرت لديه موهبة مبكرة يف

الت�ضوير والتحرير. وهو خري ممثل جليل جديد طموح وموهوب وذكي. يحلم

اأن ي�ضافر حول العامل واأن يكت�ضف مواهب اأخرى جديدة.

لي�ضت فقط �ضحراء ولي�ضت فقط �ضماء زرقاء. هذه املباين لي�ضت جمرد مباٍن

قدمية اأو جديدة. فقد عا�س اأنا�س حقيقيون هنا يف هذه املباين ال�ضاحرة

العتيقة . ميكننا اإن اأمعنا النظر جيدا اأن نرى ملمح من حيواتهم ال�ضابقة

يف تلك اجلدران. يف ليلة و�ضحاها ظهرت مبان اأخرى لمعة و عالية. مباٍن

حجبت عنا �ضطوع ال�ضم�س كما اعتاد اأن يراه من قبلنا. مازالت ال�ضماء

نف�ضها وال�ضم�س نف�ضها اأي�ضا. كل ما علينا هو اأن نرى، اأن نغلق عيوننا ونتخيل

املا�ضي. مثلما ميكننا اأي�ضا ت�ضور امل�ضتقبل والتفكري يف الأجيال اجلديدة التي

�ضت�ضكن بدورها اأبراج لمعة من الزجاج مل ينته بناوؤها.

Sheikha Al Khulaifi

Sheikha is a Qatari photographer and graphic designer. Born in Belgium, lived in Qatar. She started taking photos since she was a kid, taking pictures of her dolls and her family’s trips. She graduated from Qatar University with a degree in Computer sci-ence. Now she is a member of Qatar Photographic Society.

With the fast lane life of modernity, we might forget how amazing the Qatari environment is. Who could even imagine that such magnificent birds live in our desert? This is the price of living a modern life, it blinds us from what is beautiful and simple while living under its constant pressure and exhausting demands. If we shut our eyes from it, we will be able to see the beauty of the place we live in. We might need to escape modernity and complex-ity to simplicity and beauty, to meditate of the things that surround us, and appreciate the authenticity of this desert and its contradictions.*

شيخة اخلليفي

�ضيخة م�ضورة قطرية وم�ضممة جرافيك. ولدت يف بلجيكا وعا�ضت يف

قطر. بداأت يف التقاط ال�ضور منذ الطفولة . كانت �ضيخة ت�ضور وهى

طفلة عرائ�ضها واألعابها ورحلت العائلة. تخرجت �ضيخة من جامعة

قطر تخ�ض�س علوم الكمبيوتر وهى الآن ع�ضو يف جمعية قطر للت�ضوير

الفوتوغرايف.

مع اليقاع ال�ضريع للحياة احلديثة يغفل الواحد منا اأحيانا عن روؤية

جمال البيئة القطرية. من كان ليتخيل اأن هذه الطيور اجلميلة �ضت�ضدح

يف �ضحراء قطر. ت�ضغلنا احلياة الع�ضرية ب�ضغوطها واأعبائها فل ننتبه

اأن جمال كامل يقبع يف كل ما حولنا. رمبا علينا اأن نغلق اأعيننا ونحاول

ا�ضت�ضفاف جمال ما يحوطنا. رمبا علينا اأن نبتعد عن احلداثة واحلياة

املعقدة حتى ن�ضتطيع اأن نرى اجلمال الأ�ضر حتى يف اأب�ضط الأ�ضياء. نتاأمل

ما حولنا نقدر اأ�ضالة ال�ضحراء بكل ما حتمله بداخلها من متناق�ضات.

Aju George Chris

Chris has always been fascinated with light and its absence. He loves to capture moments for eternity, and his experience as a sports journalist taught him the importance of having an eye for details. He tries to stay true to what he has seen and present the truth in his photos. He wishes to travel the world and reveal more of it.

Qatar is like a constantly evolving living organism, which leaves traces of its stages of metamorphosis all across the mainland. A short drive around the country enlightens curious spectators about the various hues and shades that make up a nation built from the desert. Bright, gleam-ing high-rises give way to sepia-tinted dwellings which screams of antiquity. The deep yellow of the desert sand gracefully transforms to the electric blue of the sea. A million dreams were planted, nurtured and harvested on Doha’s shores. It is now the perfect amalgamation of the traditional and the modern.

اجو جورج كريس

لطاملا كان كري�س مفتونا بال�ضوء ومبا يخلقه غياب ال�ضوء. اأحب

دائما التقاط �ضور تبقى خالدة. علمته خربة عمله �ضحفيا ريا�ضيا

اأهمية النتباه اإىل التفا�ضيل. يحاول نقل ال�ضور ب�ضفافية ويحلم

بال�ضفر حول العامل واكت�ضاف املزيد.

دولة قطر هى مثل الكائن احلي يف تطور م�ضتمر. تظهر اآثار حتولتها

يف كل مكان من حولن. نزهة ق�ضرية يف اأنحاء قطر و�ضرنى الألوان

والظلل التي ت�ضنع هذه الأمة. اأمة بنيت من ال�ضحراء. م�ضاكن

تهتف بعراقتها و لون رمال ال�ضحراء الأ�ضفر العميق يتحول اإىل

اللون الأزرق للبحر. مليني الحلم قد زرعت، تربت وح�ضدت فوق

�ضواطئ الدوحة يف مزج متناغم بني التقاليد واحلداثة.

Assil Diab

Assil was born in Romania and has lived in Qatar since 1995. She is now majoring in Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar while also taking elective courses in Fashion Design. Assil was the fashion show designer for two consecutive years and choreographer for the North Atlantic College Fashion show. She has travelled extensively whilst being exposed to dif-ferent people, cultures, and places and her work is inspired by that diversity. She also loves several forms of art whether illustra-tion drawing, painting, or photography.

Expensive cars, skyscrapers, huge shopping malls and serv-ants might give the idea that everyone in Qatar is living the fast paced city life. Yet children are children; they care about is their games and candies. Every now and then they also need a retreat to nature and a return to serenity.*

أصيل دياب

ولدت اأ�ضيل يف رومانيا وتعي�س يف قطر منذ العام 2005. هى

متخ�ض�ضة يف ت�ضميم اجلرافيك يف جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث يف

قطر. كما تدر�س اأ�ضيل ف�ضول اأخرى اختيارية يف ت�ضميم الأزياء.

عملت اأ�ضيل وملدة �ضنتني على التوايل م�ضممة للأزياء و للعرو�س

الراق�ضة يف عر�س اأزياء جامعة �ضمال الأطلنطي يف قطر. �ضافرت

اأ�ضيل اإىل بلد كثرية وتعرفت على ثقافات، اأماكن واأجنا�س

خمتلفة مما كان له بالغ الأثر يف اثراء عملها وجتربتها الفنية.

حتب اأ�ضيل جتربة اأ�ضكال فنية خمتلفة من الر�ضم والت�ضوير.

ناطحات ال�ضحاب العالية، مراكز الت�ضوق ال�ضخمة و ال�ضيارات

الغالية والعمالة كل تلك الأ�ضياء رمبا تعطي فكرة اأن كل من يعي�س

يف قطر يعي�س حياة �ضريعة مرتفة. لكن الأطفال يبقون هم الأطفال

يهتمون باألعابهم وباحللوى. و�ضط ذلك اليقاع ال�ضاخب للحياة

يحتاج الأطفال اأحيانا كما يحتاج الكبار اإىل الرجوع اإىل الطبيعة

واإىل ال�ضكينة اأي�ضا.

Autumn Watts

Autumn earned her MFA in Creative Writing at Cornell Univer-sity, prior to her appointment as the Writing Centre Coordinator at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. Her fiction, poetry, and essays have appeared in several journals, including the Qatar Narratives series, Indiana Review and Best New Poets, and she enjoys collaborations with visual artists.

Qatar is metamorphic: shedding walls to rubble, erupting bright glass, new towers. Everything yearning upward. Sometimes you blink and a landmark is gone. I had not been by the “carwash souk” on Madinat Khalifa for some time. When I did, it was only to find the carwashes, tailors, and auto shops--once so bustling--now deserted. But not entirely vacant. Behind the smudged glass and peeling metal bars, the silent rooms held puzzling debris: rolls of fabric, propped brooms, notebooks, bedding, juice bottles, engine parts, shirts. (When I came by again, only bare earth remained.)

بعد ح�ضول اأتومن على ماج�ضتري الكتابة البداعية من جامعة ويل

كورنيل مت تعيينها من�ضقة يف مركز الكتابة بجامعة ويل كورنيل يف

قطر. ن�ضر لها العديد من الق�ضائد ال�ضعرية واملقالت يف العديد

من اجلرائد والدوريات مثل انديانا ريفيو وجملة اأف�ضل ال�ضعراء

اجلدد و �ضل�ضلة روايات قطر. ت�ضتمتع اأوتومن بالتعاون مع فنانني

اأخرين لهم اهتمامات م�ضابهة �ضواء يف جمال الكتابة البداعية اأو

الت�ضوير الفوتوغرايف.

قطر مدينة �ضريعة التطور والتحول. تتحول اجلدران اإىل تراب

بني ليلة و�ضحاها. ثم تتحول �ضريعا اأي�ضا اإىل اأبراج لمعة كما

الربكان. تختفي علمات بارزة مبجرد اإغما�ضة عني وتظهر

علمات اأخرى مميزة مكانها. منذ مدة طويلة مل اأذهب اإىل �ضوق

تنظيف ال�ضيارات يف مدينة خليفة وعندما ذهبت اكت�ضفت اختفاء

ال�ضوق وحملت تنظيف ال�ضيارات التي كانت يوما ت�ضج بالعابرين

من النا�س والعاملني. حتول �ضوق تنظيف ال�ضيارات اإىل م�ضاحة

وا�ضعة وخالية . مل اأر من وراء الزجاج املرتب واأنابيب احلديد

ال�ضدئة �ضوى قطع قما�س، مكن�ضة، دفاتر، علب ع�ضري، قطع

حمرك وملب�س. وعندما عدت هناك مرة اأخرى مل اأجد اأيا من

هذه الأ�ضياء. مل تكن هناك �ضوى الأر�س العارية.

Mashail Mehanna Al Naimi

Mashail grew up around cameras as her father was into film photography. In May 2009, she graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics. Mashail is an award-winning photographer, and has participated in a number of showcases. She hopes to make a name for her-self in the world of photography.

Just like a little boat, we are free to surf the sea of life. We meet new people and converse with them over a cup of tea. Either served in a simple clear or in a much fancier glass, tea still holds its place as a symbol of companionship in Qatar. However, in this journey we have to be aware not to endanger the safety of others. Finding a dead fish on the shore of Al Wakra should not slip by, but it should send an alarming message that prosperity must not come at the expense of the lives of others.

مشاعل مهنا النعيمي

ن�ضاأت م�ضاعل يف بيئة اأتاحت لها التعرف مبكرا على فن الت�ضوير

حيث اهتم والدها بالت�ضوير ال�ضينمائي. تخرجت م�ضاعل من

جامعة جورجتاون تخ�ض�س �ضيا�ضة دولية. وقد فازت بجوائز

يف الت�ضوير الفوتوغرايف ا�ضافة اإىل م�ضاركتها يف العديد من

املعار�س الفنية. وتاأمل يوما اأن ي�ضطع ا�ضمها يف عامل الت�ضوير

الفوتوغرايف.

متاما كاأننا قارب �ضغري يحق لنا اأن نركب اأمواج احلياة. نتعرف

على اأنا�س جدد نتحاكى معهم حول فنجان ال�ضاي. فنجان ال�ضاي

املقدم يف اأكواب زجاجية ب�ضيطة اأو يف اأكواب اأخرى فخمة ال�ضنع

هو نف�س كوب ال�ضاي الذي يلعب دورا هاما يف حياتنا. فنجان

ال�ضاي هنا يف قطر هو ال�ضحبة. يف خ�ضم رحلة احلياة يجب األ

نن�ضى كائنات اأخرى. يجب األ نعر�س حيوات اأخرى للخطر. روؤية

�ضمكة ميتة على �ضاطىء الوكرة ا�ضارة لنا اأن الرخاء يف حياتنا

يجب األ ياأتي على ح�ضاب كائنات اأخرى.

Maryam Ahmed Yousuf

It is not unusual for Maryam to grow up and be a straight A student in Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon University and a talented photographer since she was born within a family of engineers, doctors and businessmen. She developed her skills though being a photographer for her university newspaper and volunteering with Doha Tribecca Film Festival. Maryam is cur-rently gaining experience in film making.

The sand that once brushed the bare feet of girls play-ing hopscotch in their bukhnag traditional black clothing with golden embroidery covering the girls’ heads is being buried today with cement for yet another skyscraper under the name of Qatar’s developments. And the scene of those girls, showing each other their Henna which they got on their hands in celebration for Eid, is now blocked with the view of those tall buildings with lights in celebration for a grand opening of yet another new shopping mall. But, those girls that lived in an era, enjoying heritage and traditions, where life was simple and Qatar was thought of more than just another construction site are actually the hidden reason behind Qatar’s continuous success today.

من الطبيعي اأن ت�ضبح مرمي م�ضورة موهوبة و طالبة متفوقة يف جمال

نظم املعلومات يف جامعة كارنيجي ميلون حيث ن�ضاأت يف عائلة من

املهند�ضني، الأطباء و رجال الأعمال .وقد اأتاح لها العمل يف �ضحيفة

اجلامعة فر�ضة تطوير اأدواتها الفنية وخرباتها املهنية. كما تطوعت مرمي

اأي�ضا بالعمل يف مهرجان ترابيكا الدوحة للأفلم. حتاول مرمي حاليا

على اأيديهن يعر�ضنها على بع�ضهن البع�س اختفت وظهرت مكانها مبان

عالية م�ضاأة احتفال بافتتاح مركز جتاري اأخر جديد رمبا. هوؤلء الفتيات

اللتي ع�ضن يف فرتة ما وا�ضتمتعن باإرث ثقايف وبتقاليد متتد يف تاريخ

دولة قطر، حيث كانت احلياة ب�ضيطة وقطر تعني لهن اأكرث من موقع بناء.

هوؤلء الفتيات والإميان الكامل بدولة قطر حيث التاريخ ميتد رغم اختلف

الأبنية هى الأ�ضباب احلقيقية وراء ا�ضتمرار قطر يف النجاح اإىل اليوم.

Kristin Giordano

Kristin is an American fine art photographer currently living in Qatar. She works mainly with unconventional cameras: antique cameras, plastic cameras, pinhole cameras. This series is part of the project “Visualizing the City: Architectural Modernity in Contempo-rary Doha,” a collaboration with Andrew Gardner, Assistant Profes-sor of Anthropology at Qatar University. It was funded by Qatar University as part of the 2008 Faculty Start-up Grant Program.

Doha is a difficult city to know. Often it is obscured by dust. We move through the urban landscape at breakneck speed. From one roundabout to the next, passing fields of rubble, gleaming new skyscrapers, shopping malls, walls and more walls with villas and compounds behind them, their lush gardens obscured from view. Monoliths emerge from the ancient desert floor seemingly overnight; the construction cranes move from site to site like giant, industrious insects. And everywhere is the sound of building, rebuilding. We live through these rapid cycles of deconstruction and construction. When we think we know the city, the rules change. Landmarks disappear, the maps are redrawn.

كري�ضنت م�ضورة اأمريكية تعي�س حاليا يف قطر. تعمل عادة

بكامريات قدمية، بل�ضتيكية وذات ثقب. هذه املجموعة من ال�ضور

هى جزء من م�ضروع بعنوان ت�ضوير املدينة: احلداثة املعمارية

يف الدوحة املعا�ضرة. وهو م�ضروع تتعاون فيه كري�ضنت مع اأندرو

جاردنر و هو اأ�ضتاذ م�ضاعد يف ق�ضم علم الن�ضان يف جامعة قطر

�ضمن م�ضروع ترعاه جامعة قطر للعام 2008.

الدوحة هى مدينة ي�ضعب التعرف عليها من وراء الغبار املتطاير

يف كل مكان. من دوار اإىل اأخر نعرب مبناطق كثرية يظهر منها

ناطحات �ضحاب ، مراكز جتارية و جدران. جممعات �ضكنية

حتوطها جدران بينما احلدائق تختبىء يف الداخل. تظهر املباين

تلل و�ضط هذه ال�ضحراء. نرى ال�ضاحنات الكبرية تتحرك مثل

ح�ضرات �ضناعية كبرية ن�ضمع اأ�ضوات الهدم والبناء طيلة الوقت.

نعي�س يف حياة �ضريعة من الهدم والبناء. وحني نعتقد اأننا بتنا

نعرف املدينة حق املعرفة تتغري �ضور الأ�ضياء ، تختفي العلمات

البارزة ويعاد ر�ضم اخلرائط من جديد.

Saleh Al Khulaifi

Saleh’s passion in photography is shown through his member-ship in Qatar Photography society and his efforts as a co-founder of Carnegie Mellon Photography Club. He has been freelancing to cover events for his university and newspaper. Moreover, he organized competitions such as Qatari Eyes Photography Competition and won awards for capture light and the Qatari student network competition.

Green became scarce, and trees are rare. Instead of having different shapes of trees, we are having different shapes of tall buildings. Modernity is great and a necessity in our time, but so as the environment. We should not focus on material and forget the essence of this generous land. What is the point of having all these materials in a modern world if we lose our environment. Green is not just a color and a tree is not just a plant. It is life, it is history and cul-ture. Those life producing creatures have lived on this land before those tall buildings. So we should care about them more, just like how our fathers did.*

صالح اخلليفي

�ضالح م�ضور واعد وموهوب. يظهر حبه للت�ضوير من خلل اأعماله الفنية

التي مكنته من امل�ضاركة يف جمعية قطر للت�ضوير. كما �ضارك اأي�ضا يف

تاأ�ضي�س نادي الت�ضوير يف جامعة كارنيجي ميلون. يعمل �ضالح م�ضورا حرا

يف تغطية بع�س املنا�ضبات يف جامعته واأي�ضا م�ضورا لبع�س ال�ضحف. قام

�ضالح بتنظيم م�ضابقات عديدة من �ضمنها م�ضابقة عيون قطرية للت�ضوير.

كما فاز اأي�ضا يف م�ضابقات فنية اأخرى مثل م�ضابقة التقط ال�ضوء وم�ضابقة

الطالب القطري.

يختفي الأخ�ضر وتندر الأ�ضجار. بنايات عالية حلت حمل الأ�ضجار. احلداثة

�ضيء عظيم وهام يف حياتنا والبيئة �ضيء جوهري. نحاول األ نن�ضغل

باملاديات عن التفكري يف جوهر احلياة التي اأكرمنا بالعي�س فيها. الأخ�ضر

لي�س جمرد لون وال�ضجرة لي�ضت جمرد نبات بل تاريخ وثقافة وحياة. لقد

عا�ضت كائنات حقيقية على هذه الأر�س قبل وجود املباين ال�ضاهقة. لذلك

علينا بدورنا األ نن�ضى وجود هذه الكائنات متاما كما مل ين�س اأباوؤنا.

Maryam Al Sumaitt

Maryam is a junior at Carnegie Mellon University. Her passion for photography pushed her to be one of the founders of the Photography club at her university. She is currently an Administrative member. Maryam is an active photographer and has participated in many photography competitions and won about five times.

Qatar is rich in culture, tradition, and heritage yet as she tries to fit with globalization, the culture and traditions are at risk of being demolished. But great efforts are put to keep that culture sustained and unchanged, such as the investment put into the changing Souq Waqif and making it a traditional place that reflects life in Qatar many decades ago. The effort that was put into that investment paid off as Souq Waqif became the first destination to tourists and locals.

مرمي طالبة يف جامعة كارنيجي ميلون يف قطر. دفعها حبها

للت�ضوير اإىل اأن تكون واحدة من موؤ�ض�ضي نادي الت�ضوير يف

جامعتها. تعمل حاليا يف الإدارة وهى م�ضورة ن�ضطة اأي�ضا. �ضاركت

يف العديد من م�ضابقات الت�ضوير وفازت يف خم�س م�ضابقات.

حتاول دولة قطر اأن حتافظ على عاداتها وثقافتها واإرثها الثقايف

يف ظل العوملة. حماولت عديدة تبذل من اأجل احلفاظ على اأ�ضالة

املكان. جهود كثرية تبذل يف هذا ال�ضاأن من �ضمنها اجلهود املبذولة

يف �ضوق واقف وحماولة ابقائه مكانا مميزا يعك�س احلياة القدمية

وروح دولة قطر. جنحت هذه اجلهود يف حتويل �ضوق واقف لي�س

فقط اإىل مزار يق�ضده ال�ضائحون من خمتلف جهات العامل ولكن

اأي�ضا اإىل مكان يق�ضده القطريون .

Philip Warrilow and Richard McDermott

Rick and Phil grew up in the north of England few miles away from each other but they met in Qatar. Phil studied Art whilst at his secondary school and carried on with it as a pastime hobby. His drawing and painting culminated in an art exhibition at the French Cultural Centre. Rick has been writing poetry since childhood and has had poems published in magazines on two occasions. He has recently completed a children’s story based in Doha.

Safia Muhanna Al Naimi

Safia is a senior at Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service in Qatar, majoring in International Politics. She has participated in local and international photography competitions and won a number of awards. Photography is not just a form of art; she believes that it is a form of communication where words and emotions are expressed visually.

My Qatar is like a crystal ball, small, but has many reflec-tions of life. When we are children, we are born, raw, naked and empty. However, society does not abandon us over the course of an enormous changing life. Rather, it embraces and dresses us with its traditions and customs.

يف قطر تخ�ض�س �ضيا�ضة دولية. �ضاركت �ضافية يف العديد من م�ضابقات

الت�ضوير الفوتوغرايف العاملية واملحلية . فازت بعدد من اجلوائز. تعترب

�ضافية الت�ضوير لي�س فقط �ضكل من اأ�ضكال الفن ولكن هو اأي�ضا و�ضيلة من

و�ضائل الت�ضال تعرب فيه ال�ضورة عن امل�ضاعر والكلمات.

قطر كما اأراها ت�ضبه الكرة الكري�ضتالية، �ضغرية لكنها مليئة بانعكا�ضات

احلياة املختلفة. نولد اأطفال �ضغارا بدون خربات، مواد خام ميكن �ضقلها.

Matthias Krug

In the course of writing hundreds of articles for publications around the world, Matthias has also developed a passion for capturing the most fascinating photographs in the places he vis-its. His photos have been praised and published in a wide range of newspapers, magazines and publications. Part social critique, part artistic expression, Krug photography expresses the desire to live and let live in a world full of surprises.

In the ever changing face of the daily bustle of Doha, we can still see history and culture mingling with an impetus of modernity that we cannot ever wholly grasp but only observe. We can see people from different cultures ex-changing their knowledge, their joys, but also their fears. This mixture of people walking opposite each other, where has it come from and where will it go? Sometimes in Doha you have the feeling that everything is changing, yet, it stays the same.

كثرية. ثم طور ماتيا�س اهتماما اأخر وهو الت�ضوير. ن�ضرت له جمموعة من

ال�ضور يف جمموعة متنوعة من املجلت وا�ضتقبلت اأعماله بحفاوة كبرية.

تتنوع مو�ضوعات �ضور ماتيا�س ما بني النقد الجتماعي، التعبري عن

امل�ضاعر والأ�ضاليب الفنية والرغبة يف احلياة. الرغبة يف العي�س يف عامل

ملىء باملفاأجات.

يف خ�ضم احلياة ال�ضريعة ال�ضاخبة مازال ميكننا اأن نرى التمازج الكامل

بني تاريخ الدوحة وثقافتها . وحداثة ل ميكن فهمها متاما بعد. اأن نرى

اأنا�س من بلد خمتلفة يتبادلون اخلربات واملعرفة، الذكريات احللوة

واملخاوف. هذا اخلليط من الب�ضر ال�ضائرين يف طرق متقاطعة اإىل اين

مي�ضي ومن اأين يجىء؟ اأحيانا ي�ضعر الواحد منا يف الدوحة اأن الأ�ضياء

تتغري باإ�ضتمرار بينما هى ثابتة.

Anfal Al Kandari

Anfal was born in 1982 of a Kuwaiti father and a Qatari mother. After obtaining her bachelors degree in English Literature from Qatar University, she started working in the environmental field in the energy sector. Since she discovered her passion for pho-tography, she started teaching herself about photography and experimenting with different techniques. Some of her work was published on official UK websites and the Qatari Eyes gallery in Souq Waqif.

Once I read a quote by E. Hubbered that says “the love we give away is the only love we keep.” Through presenting this set I give some of the love I have for this beautiful city. However, sometimes I cannot help but wonder how people used to live in old days. Both life and society were simple and there was always a chance for social bonding. Nowadays with a busy life style we try to keep our old beautiful habits alive, along with it we used modern communication technology.

انفال الكندري

ولدت اأنفال يف عام 1982 من اأب كويتي و اأم قطرية. تعمل يف

جمال البيئة يف قطاع الطاقة بعد ح�ضولها على بكالوريو�س يف

الأدب الجنليزي. منذ اكت�ضافها ل�ضغفها بالت�ضوير، بداأت تعلم

نف�ضها الت�ضوير و اختبار تقنيات خمتلفة للت�ضوير. قامت بن�ضر

بع�س اأعمالها يف بع�س املواقع الر�ضمية الربيطانيه على النرتنت و

يف معار�س مركز �ضوق واقف للفنون.

يف يوم ما، قراأت عبارة ل هيبريد تقول »احلب الذي مننحه، هو

احلب الذي نبقية«. من خلل تقدمي هذه املجموعة من ال�ضور،

امنح بع�ضا من احلب الذي اأكنه لهذه املدينة اجلميلة. و لكن

اأحيانًا، ل ي�ضعني اإل اأن اتعجب و ات�ضاءل كيف كان يعي�س النا�س

هنا يف الأيام اخلوايل. كانت احلياة كما كان املجتمع، ب�ضيطني

مما مينح فر�ضا كبرية لتكوين روابط اجتماعية قوية. اأما الآن يف

خ�ضم ا�ضلوب احلياة احلديث و الذي يت�ضم بان�ضغال بع�س النا�س

فيه عن بع�ضهم، نحاول اأن نبقي هذه العادات القدمية حية عن

طريق ا�ضتخدام طرق التوا�ضل التكنولوجية احلديثة.

Mai Al Kuwari

Mai has studied, lived and worked for a number of years in the United Kingdom but now lives and resides in her home country Qatar. An environmental scientist by training, a corporate man-ager by profession and an aspiring photographer by practice, Mai finds herself truly inspired by the paradox between the three different domains. “I continuously endeavor to employ my photography in capturing the simplicity of life yet in perhaps re-flective and controversial ways. There are a number of profound causes in serving humanity that one would hope to play a role in fulfilling, however minor that role may be.”

Evolution: Where women once were only allowed to leave their houses in the presence of a male chaperone, they now lead and represent a large segment of the independent, educated and successful workforce. This evolution in the local social environment is perhaps a product of many inter-twining ingredients such as: religion, tradition, education, global communication, cultural exposure and exploration.

در�ضت مي وعا�ضت وعملت ل�ضنوات يف اجنلرتا. در�ضت علوم البيئة وعملت

مديرة ل�ضركة واأي�ضا مار�ضت الت�ضوير. تاأمل مي اأن تعك�س يف اأعمالها

الفنية موهبة التقاط �ضور ب�ضاطة احلياة وجمالها باأ�ضلوب فني عميق ورمبا

اأي�ضا مثري للجدل. ترى اأن هناك طرق كثرية خلدمة الن�ضانية وي�ضعى

الواحد منا اإىل امل�ضاعدة ول يهم حجم الدور الذي نلعبه طاملا اأننا نعمل يف

�ضبيل حتقيق اأهداف ان�ضانية �ضامية.

التطور: كانت الن�ضاء يف املا�ضي ل ي�ضمح لهن مبغادرة املنزل اإل يف وجود

حماية من الرجال. الآن متثل الن�ضاء �ضريحة اجتماعية كبرية م�ضتقلة

وواعية واأي�ضا ناجحة يف �ضوق العمل. هذا التطور احلا�ضل يف �ضوق العمل

القطري هو رمبا نتاج عوامل كثرية ومت�ضافرة من بينها الدين، التقاليد

التعليم، العوملة، تطور تكنولوجيا الت�ضال، التعر�س لثقافات خمتلفة

وحب الكت�ضاف.

Nayaab Yusuf Shaikh

Nayaab was born in Muscat, Oman, has been living in Qatar for almost two years and is now a sophomore student at Northwest-ern University, Qatar. Her love for photography started from a very young age. She remembers being surrounded by the tripod and the camera throughout her growing years, as her father was an avid photographer. Nayaab will be graduating from North-western University, Qatar in 2012 with a Bachelors of Science in Communication..

The growth in Qatar has a strong sense of community and development through the generations. While we see many religious connotation there is always a way of juxtapos-ing old and new Qatar within one frame. The journey of a woman within the abaya has progressed a long way; from jallabeyah to jeans. Architecture has also caught up with the rapid pace of growth. However, old unique buildings still exist along those modern ones that gives the feeling that the past is witnessing the evolution and progress of a more advanced Qatar through the hands of the new generation.

ناياب يوسف شيخ

ولدت ناياب يف العا�ضمة م�ضقط بعمان وعا�ضت يف قطرملدة �ضنتني. بداأ

حبها للت�ضوير منذ ال�ضغر. كانت دوما يف طفولتها حماطة بالكامريات

حيث كان والدها مولعا مبمار�ضة الت�ضوير. تدر�س الآن يف جامعة نورث

و�ضرتن يف قطر و�ضتتخرج يف العام 2012 تخ�ض�س علوم الت�ضالت.

منو دولة قطر وتطورها مرتبط بالح�ضا�س بالرتابط الجتماعي بني الأفراد.

ارتباط ت�ضعر به كافة الأجيال يف قطر. هناك اطار واحد يجمع ما بني قطر

املا�ضي وقطر املعا�ضرة ، اطار تتخله الكثري من الدللت الدينية. رحلة املراأة

اأي�ضا قد تغريت واختلف الزي من بني العباءة واجلينز. العمارة اأي�ضا حتاول

اللحاق بركب التغري. لكن مازال بامكاننا اأن نرى املبان القدمية النادرة

جتاور مبان اأخرى حديثة. ن�ضعر كاأن املا�ضي نف�ضه �ضاهد على التطور

والتحول يف قطر. التطور احلا�ضل يف قطر على اأيدي اجليل اجلديد.

Editor Biographies

Maryam Ahmad Al SubaieyMaryam is an aspiring writer from Qatar. She graduated with a degree in Political Science from the United King-dom, and at the moment is working toward her mas-ter’s in Development Studies. Maryam works as political researcher during the day, but at night she turns into her true passion, which is writing. She has been an active member of the literary society and contributed numerous essays, articles in the Qatar Narrative Series, Woman Today Magazine, and is a popular blogger. Additionally, she has participated in many writing workshops, prepared and pre-sented others in both Arabic and English. She is working on her first book and aspires to be a well known published author.

Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar Mohana is a writer and educator who has lived in Qatar since 2005. A scholar of literature, she has a PhD from the University of Florida with a focus on gender and postcolo-nial theory. She has published short stories, academic ar-ticles, and travel essays in a variety of journals and literary magazines and is the creator of the Qatar Narratives series, which now celebrates its third title with Dreesha.

مرمي أحمد السبيعيمرمي كاتبة طموحة من قطر. تخرجت من اململكة املتحدة ح�ضلت

على بكالوريو�س العلوم ال�ضيا�ضية و حاليًا حت�ضر ر�ضالة املاج�ضتري يف

الدرا�ضات التنموية يف اململكة املتحدة كذلك. مرمي تعمل باحثة �ضيا�ضية

خلل النهارولكن بعد �ضاعات العمل تتجة اإىل �ضغفها احلقيقي األ و هو

الكتابة. اإنها ع�ضو ن�ضط يف جمعية اأدبية و ن�ضرت عدد من املقالت يف

�ضل�ضلة روايات من قطر و جملة املراأه اليوم باللغة الجنليزية ويف مدونتها

اللكرتونية. بالإ�ضافة اإىل ذلك فقد �ضاركت و قدمت عدد من ور�س

العمل للكتابة البداعية باللغة العربية و الإجنليزية. يف الوقت احلايل،

تعمل على اأول رواية لها و تطمح اأن تكون موؤلفة ناجحة.

موهانالكشمي راجاكومارموهانا كاتبة وباحثة يف الأدب، وهي تعي�س يف قطر منذ عام 2005.

حا�ضلة على الدكتوراة من جامعة فلوريدا حول النوع ونظرية مابعد

ال�ضتعمار. ن�ضرت لها العديد من الق�ض�س الق�ضرية والبحوث الأكادميية

واأي�ضًا مقالت حول اأ�ضفارها يف العديد من اجلرائد واملجلت الأدبية.

موهانا هي �ضاحبة فكرة م�ضروع �ضل�ضلة كتابات من قطر وهذا الكتاب هو

الثالث يف هذة ال�ضل�ضلة.
