Somuch exciting newsthis spring! Your fellowclub members have beenbusy promoting the

mission of the UnitedDoberman Club around thecountry. The UDC is rockingaround 360 voting membersin the club, and we nowhave 15 member clubs, thenewest being Working

Dobermans of the Flint Hills. Welcome! For the first timeever, we have a team of FIVE competitors that will be repre-senting the UDC at the 2019 IDC Weltmeisterschaft, whichwill be held in Hungary this year. Here in the United States,we have three UDC members planning to represent the UDCat the AWDF Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas. It’s time to start planning your 2019 trials and shows!

There are many UDC events already planned for 2019. OurNational Specialty and IGP Championship will be hosted bythe Vita Nova Dobermann Club in Atwater, Ohio, May 15-19, 2019, and plans are already underway for the 2019 UDCFall Classic to be held in Topeka, Kansas in October. Alreadyon the calendar … Mid-South Working Dobermans Club,Upstate Doberman Club of New York and New Age Tri-StateDoberman Club IGP trials are scheduled. Remember, IGPtitles earned at UDC sanctioned events can be added to yourdog’s official AKC pedigree (for a fee). We also have somegreat conformation shows in the works as well. Check theUDC website often for additional information about UDCevents planned around the country. The UDC Administration and Performance manuals have

been updated for 2019 and are now on the website. IGP

competitors should review the Performance manual forchanges in eligibility for IGP competitors. Beginning thisyear, competitors at the IGP3 level at the UDC National IGPChampionship must be UDC members. A new web-enabledUDC registry is under construction, and we anticipatecompletion of the project by June 30.Your new officers and directors for 2019-2020 will be

installed during the annual meeting in May. We have somefresh new faces and ideas coming on board. Make sure thatyou reach out to them with your ideas and concerns. This isyour chance to participate in the future direction of our club. The UDC is a club run by volunteers. All of the resources

that belong to our club … our website, our manuals, ourFacebook materials and our magazine are managed andproduced by volunteers. The member clubs that are formedand the events that are held, are all run by volunteers.Hats off to those who contribute both their time andtheir money, year in and year out, to support the UnitedDoberman Club and its members. I encourage you to stepforward and contribute in whatever manner you can toour mission of preserving, protecting and promoting theworking heritage of the Doberman. This is my last president’s message for the FOCUS.

ver·sa·til·i·tyvərsəˈtilədē • nounAbility to adapt or be adapted to

many different functions or activities.“An athlete of remarkable versatility.”

Adapting is one of the most important attributes in ourworld. We all have to adapt to changes, and the rate ofchange is ever increasing. Every species has the ability toadapt, though the degree of adaptability can vary greatly.Individual’s ability and desire to adapt can vary to an even

greater extent. Certainly we can all step out of our comfortzones and learn new skills, but some some do so much moreeasily than others. One thing for certain, versatility is greatadvantage in life and those who possess it go further thanthose who lack it.It seems to me that Herr Doberman had an inherent

degree of versatility planned into his breeding program.• Square-bodied and compact• Smoothly muscled• Medium size• Short coat• Wedge-shaped head• Strong, straight topline• Head, neck and legs in proportion to the length anddepth of the body

• The appearance should convey power and elegance• The temperament should be stable, fearless and devoted• And, in my opinion, one of the most importantattributes, with high Intelligence

The Doberman is a natural and powerful athlete.Intelligence and devotion enhance adaptability. The desireto please and the ability to learn make the Doberman highlyversatile. Thanks to all who shared their versatile Dobermanexperiences and endeavors, and congratulations to allwho’ve worked hard to earn Versatility titles. As always, thanks to all contributors: members, writers,

photographers, advertisers and anyone who I’ve missed. My apologies for errors and omissions that have appeared inprevious issues and may appear in this issue. Thanks to allfor allowing me to serve and contribute.

Thinking about the main topic of thisissue made me ponder the versatilityof the search dog. These dogs areversatility personified. They end upwearing many hats, so to speak.Of course, their main function is

to find, be it live or deceased. Theyspend hours and hours training andsearching, clearing more negativeacres than locating the missing. Thedogs have to adapt to a variety ofterrain, locations, noise and weatherconditions. They do it all for their toy,a special treat and their devotion totheir handler. They go out and worklong hours and get up the next day towork some more, until all probabilityof detection (POD) has been exhausted.

At the same time, theyare called upon to betherapy dogs. They willcomfort the missing child/adult that they havefound. They will make anofficer feel better becausehe’s worked so hard to finda missing child, takingtheir toy over to him toengage him and forget fora moment that the childhasn’t been located. Orthe family that standsabove watching dogs giveindications that theirloved one is in the water.Waiting patiently for therecovery. Meeting the dogswho worked so diligentlyto locate their familymember. Taking theirminds off what hashappened, if only for ashort time. And theycomfort their handler, whohas to put on a brave facewhen the outcome is bad.The dogs typically do it

on their own. Over andover I’ve seen it happenwith my own boys. Theytake it upon themselves todo something unexpected,to reach out to someonewho’s hurting. Even myboy Andor, who was in noway a social butterfly(Translation: a one-womandog), stunned us by interacting with adetective on a particularly tough case.At 9/11 we’ve all seen the SAR dogs

also acting as therapy dogs for theother personnel who were searchingfor the missing.Besides doing their normal search

work, these dogs are often asked to dodemos and interact with various agegroups and those with disabilities. Theyare expected to take it in stride. Icall them wash-and-wear dogs. Goanywhere, do anything. They have tobe agile, adaptable to various footing, and swimming is a great skill to have. They need to be mentally stable as well. Our dogs have to put up with a lot

of things that just plain aren’t normal.Like being randomly hugged bystrangers, having little kids grab andprod quicker than you can blink aneye. They handle it all with graceand tolerance. In my estimation, the search dog

fits the definition of versatility withtheir ability to adapt to many differentfunctions and activities.

Start with a confident, well-adjusted, curious, friendlyand fearless puppy. Take that puppy everywhere; havehim walk on all kinds of surfaces, hear all kinds of

weird noises, meet all kinds of people, expose him to everysituation you can think of and encourage him to use hisnose. And voilá, two or three years later you have a certifieddog. Sounds pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? And intheory, it is. In reality, it’s a one-step-forward and two-steps-back undertaking.

For a disaster dog, whether live find or recovery, there areso many aspects the dog has to accomplish. And everythingis a balancing act. For instance, obedience, It is expectedthat the dog have good manners, walk nicely on a leash andheel(ish) off lead. BUT ... if you do too much obediencework, you risk the dog becoming overly dependent on you

for direction in all things. Then there’s the agility aspect, but it’s not agility like you see on TV — it’s climb an 8-footladder, walk a plank at that height and successfully navigateseveral other obstacles. If a Doberman has an accident onone of these obstacles, convincing that dog to do thatobstacle again can be a major challenge. They do not forget.Last of the specialty skills is a baseball-type field withplatforms set 75 feet apart. The handler has to direct the dogto a series of these ‘bases’ within a three-minute time span.

While we’re working on all those skills, we are alsoworking on the dog’s indication — for disaster, a bark andstay. And we’re taking the dog to as many appropriate rubblesites and dark creepy buildings as possible, teaching himuse his nose to find people and to be confident in all

situations where he may be asked to perform the task.Along the way, as with all young dogs, the dog in

training will suddenly find he cannot do something he washappily doing a month earlier. For disaster, the poor depthperception of dogs is a challenge to overcome. I’ve seendogs take a jump they had no business doing while beingconvinced they cannot step across an 8-inch gap betweentwo pieces of concrete. The greatest obstacle in this entire process, though, is the

handler. We must train the dog to do the job, but we mustalso let the dog learn to do the job on his own. We mustcontrol the dog, but we must allow the dog to make hisown decisions. We must trust the dog’s nose over theevidence of our own eyes. The balancing act of creating aworking partnership with the dog, the give and take of whois in charge, is the biggest challenge we face as handlers nomatter what SAR field we choose to work in.But one day, the stars align and it all comes together. The

dog trusts the handler, the handler trusts the dog and it’s apartnership that only grows and improves over time.

The thing is, though, that while the handler and dogpass a test, they have not reached that level on their own.Along the way others have come early or stayed late to helpwith the training. They’ve crawled into muddy holes, twisted themselves into uncomfortable positions, dealt withspiders and other bugs, been wet and cold (or hot), yet theysmile through it all and do everything they can to help youand your dog succeed. They’ve also talked us down fromutter frustration and dried our tears when we wonder ifwe’ll ever reach our goal. So, when I think of versatility, I think of all the skills a

disaster-response dog must be competent in, how they mustbe problem solvers and make good decisions on when to bedisobedient. Their job in the field may be the task for whichthey are trained, or they may become a therapy dog forteam members of the public. This chaotic and variableenvironment is why we work to create a dog that is calmand adaptable in any situation. We expect a lot of a disasterresponse dog and the Doberman is uniquely suited tocontend with whatever transpires.

Dex is a dog that, it appears, can do everything. And do itwell. His official name gives proof to that: URO1 USEJ USJSan Rafael’s One For The Money CAA RN SWN SIA SEA SCADJ DSX DM WAC NW2 NW3-E NW3-V NW3-C. He isowned by and has been handled to all his titles by UDCmember Wendy Kulp.Dex was a singleton puppy, so he believes the world

revolves around him. And, most days it does! Toys and foodwill amp up his drive, and so will just asking him, “Are youready to work?” He also has a tendancy to start singingwhen he gets excited!Dex is consistent in everything he does. In National

Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW), Dex andWendy have just started to work off lead in interiors; beingoff lead has made a big difference. He loves to use his paws, especially in containers, which is a challenge, as shown inthe photo at right. When people start laughing, he loves it.In dock diving, there never has been an issue having a

second person on the dock to hold him or throw the toy.Dex is always all about going after the toy and bringing itback. His skill at this sport was evident when he pulled offthe best jump (20 ft. 10 in.) for a Dobe at the 2017 NorthAmerican Diving Dog (NADD)/AKC Eukanuba NationalChampionship in Orlando, Florida, a pleasant surprise to

Wendy — although according to her, “It was more like ashock!” The 20-ft. 10-in. dive was Dex’s personal best, andtopped several other competing Dobes that had jumpedbetter in the past.

Mr.Magnus

TheMar velousMagnus is officially known as Swift Run’s Magnus, BH,IPO1, IPO2, IPO3, CGC, WAC, ATT, VC. He is ownedby Russ and Paula Barry, who sent the following insideinformation on their versatile dog.Three-year-old Magnus does everything with Russ

and Paula, and they include him in everything theycan. He loves his IPO for sure, but other favoriteactivities are playing frisbee, hiking and playingin water. They take him canoeing, on overnightbackpacking trips and into retail stores — literallyanywhere that allows dogs, he goes. On the Barry’sfrequent trips from Kentucky to Wisconsin, Magnusgoes with, of course, and he travels very well. Healso accompanies the Barrys on all of their vacations. But Magnus also is a handsome dog, and hascompeted in conformation at UDC trials. Becauseof being so well-rounded, of course Magnus is avery friendly dog.

Magnus is the Barry’s first Doberman afterpreviouisly owning a couple of beagles. Withlimited Doberman experience, its hard for themto say if any of his quirks are specific to him or tothe breed — they understand that Dobermans canbe quirky.A couple of fun things: Magnus knows left and

right. When he is walking with the Barrys andthey say left or right, he’ll take a hard turn in thatdirection. When They wipe his feet, if he is told“right” or “left” paw, he hands that one to becleaned. He also knows his colors — or so the Barryslet their guests believe. All of his toys are differentcolors and they are called by their color. So, to theuntrained eye and if they aren’t really thinking, folksthink that he actually knows his colors when askedto bring “the red one.”

Who goes boating, camping, hiking, swimming, retrieving, hunting and shed-antler hunting? And also loves to play frisbee?

Why, Magnus, of course!

Canoeing is just one of the many activitiesRuss and Paula Barry enjoy with Magnus.

AWDF Scorebook Changes. Effective Jan. 1, 2019,scorebooks must be acquired from the dog’s specificAWDF member breed club or an all-breed sporting club(Mondioring, LV/DVG, ABHA) to specify the breed in thescorebook. Otherwise, the breed ID will be listed as MIXBREED. Procedures established by the individual memberorganizations for documenting the breed of the dog must befollowed. If there is no breed club for a specific breed ofdog, any AWDF member breed or sport club can issue ascorebook to that dog provided Continued on next page

News Continued from page 23 that proof of registrationwith an FCI-recognized organization is provided. For example, this means that a Rottweiler must obtain its

scorebook from USRC, LV/DVG, USMRA or AHBA to havethe dog listed as a Rottweiler. If the scorebook is issued byAWMA, UDC, etc., a Rottweiler would be listed as a mix.Currently, the UDC does not register or issue scorebooks

for non-Dobermans. Non-members can register theirDobermans with UDC and obtain a scorebook. Membershipis not required to obtain a scorebook.

AWDF/USCA Status. Membership in the AWDF allowsmembers of AWDF member clubs to compete at the AWDFNational Championship for a place on the FCI WorldChampionship team, representing the USA. On Oct. 12,2018, the United Schutzhund Clubs of America (USCA) wasexpelled from the AWDF, effective Jan. 1, 2019, for conductdetrimental to the AWDF.The specific action that precipitated a Board of Inquiry

investigation and the subsequent expulsion of USCA wasthe adoption of a resolution by the USCA Board of Directorsto differentially apply a $100 non-member trial fee to anynon-USCA member not belonging to a member club of theAmerican Working Dog Counsel (AWDC). The AWDC was anew all-breed club organized to compete with the AWDFand this effort was an attempt by the USCA to gain fullcontrol of the AWDF championship by creating a hardshipon members of alternate breed clubs in the AWDF that donot belong to USCA. Additional information about thecharges against the USCA, the BOI investigation and thesubsequent expulsion can be found atwww.awdf.net/index.php/news.Following notification of their pending expulsion, in

early December, USCA approached the AWDF leadershipabout applying to rejoin the AWDF.At a meeting of the AWDF General Board held on Dec. 19,

2018, AWDF member clubs decided the conditions underwhich the USCA might be readmitted to the AWDF as amember club. USCA has been offered membership in theorganization if it agrees to the conditions specified by themember clubs. As of the date of this writing, USCA has agreedto all terms for reapplication except for the assessment of a$1 fee per member for all new clubs in the organization.

AWDF Bylaws Updated. At a meeting held on Jan. 9, 2019,the AWDF General Board adopted revisions to the AWDFby-laws. Most changes were housekeeping in nature, butthere were three substantive changes:a. In the previous bylaws, the power to expel a member

club was held by the Executive Board. This has beenchanged to the General Board because the General Boardapproves the election of new member clubs. It’s a goodthing that the member clubs will make this determinationin the future.b. All member club applicants must now declare as

either breed club or sport club but not both. This affects themember club’s ability to send dog/handler teams to attendAWDF championships. A breed club can send only teams ofits designated breed, but sport clubs can send teams withany breed. If USCA rejoins, they must declare as a breedclub, and will only be able to send German Shepherd dogteams to the AWDF Championship.c. All new members will be accepted into AWDF in guest

status for two years. This means that if USCA rejoins, theclub will be in guest status for two years. Their titles willbe accepted, they can compete at the AWDF Championshipto earn a place on the FCI World Team, but they will haveno vote on the AWDF General Board, and members of theclub cannot serve on the AWDF Executive Board duringthis time.

How to Attend the Next Board Meeting. The UnitedDoberman Club Board of Directors meets by teleconferenceon the third Monday of each month. Any UDC member ingood standing may attend the teleconference meeting as anon-speaking guest; however, connections are limited. If you would like to attend, please send an email to

I spent less than five minutes coming up with that list, socertainly there must be even more. Dogs are incredible! NowI don’t expect to see a Doberman sled dog anytime soon, so I’mnot implying that Dobermans do all these things or even thatthey can, but I bet they can do most of them if not all.Every individual Doberman has its own inherent capabilities,

and then the environment into which it is born and nurturedcomes into consideration. I take training as part of nurturing,at least nurturing the bond between dog and owner. SomeDobermans are more versatile than others, but I believe theDoberman is a versatile breed. This is the story, the information,we want to share with the club and to highlight some of ourDobermans in their activities. When I think of the things I see in common in these various

activities, the main one is the focus the dog has on its owner andthe task. Whether tracking, heeling, diving or doing protection, our dogs are focused on us as well as the task at hand. It’s notsomething they go off and do on their own. Sure, they run acourse, but it’s at the direction of the handler.IPO combines some of these activities albeit in a different

environment or structure. The dogs perform obedience, heeling, down, stay, come, wait, jumps and retrieve (aka fetch). They doscent work by tracking a path laid down rather than findingspecifics scents, though SAR and HRD dogs are trained to findspecific individuals or deceased persons. Dobermans can betrained to track, find and alert to an incredible spectrum of ofscents and environments. And when it comes to environments, the photos I’ve seen that

warm my heart the most are the Dobermans doing therapy work.It shows a side of the breed that we know well, though the generalpublic often is unaware. While this is far from a comprehensive presentation, I hope it

will inspire readers to consider what can be done with our dogs.

In RemembranceThe working Doberman community was rocked by the loss of threeUDCmembers and long-time contributors to our breed during the laterpart of 2018 and the early part of 2019. The lives of these individualsdemonstrated the depth and breadth of our relationships with ourbeloved Dobermans.

UDC member Lyn Kargaard, of Ellendale, Delaware, passed away onNovember 5, 2018, as the result of a car accident. She was 67 years old.Her beautiful bitch Cricket (CH Eastwick’s Cricket, RATI AX AXJ NF CGCROM) was traveling with her and was also killed in the accident. Lynenjoyed competing with her dogs in AKC and UDC events. Many of usremember her showing her beautiful Charlie Brown (AKC/UDC CHViking’s Charlie Brown CDX AX AXJ VPG3 IPO3 OB3 TT ZTP1A VCXCGC ROM LC-10D), one of a handful of AKC champion Dobermansthat were also titled in working dog sport. Lyn was always supportive ofothers and very kind to novices in the sport. She will be missed. Rest inpeace Lyn.

UDC founding member Jospeh Kurz, of Lonedell, Missouri, passed awayon January 2, 2019, after a long illness. He was 85 years old. He issurvived by his wife, Linda Kurz, also a UDC founding member. He wasProfessor Emeritus of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis.Linda and Joe were fixtures at many UDC events in the early days. Joeattended to dogs while Linda attended long meetings. In addition todog sport, Linda and Joe enjoyed wilderness camping with their belovedDobermans into their elder years, and each year we would hear aboutthe adventures of Linda and Joe during the past year’s camping trip. Thelast issue of FOCUS featured an article written by Joe describing one oftheir trips. Carry on Joe.

UDCmember Pam Burns of Latham, New York, passed away on February12, 2019, following a brief illness. She was 60 years old. Pam was anenergetic and zealous competitor, showing her Dobermans in AKC, UDCand other working dog events, achieving multiple High in Trial awardsin a variety of venues. She was present at many UDC events and alwayswilling to lend a hand. Fond memories of Pam include the big, floppyhat that she would wear at UDC events during the warm months, andthe big canvas hat she would wear during the winter months. Pam issurvived by her five Dobermans. The Doberman community cametogether upon Pam’s passing and assisted in getting her dogs into goodhomes where they will be appreciated for their working character. Resteasy Pam, we’ve got your babies where they need to be.
