The term "Data Driven Instruction" refers to when teachers use information collected from assessments, observations, children’s work samples, etc. to make informed decisions for adjusting instruction.

We encourage teachers to follow the data cycle as they consider the results of their screeners and plan for instruction using their screener's results.

The data cycle is a helpful way to visualize how information (data) is collected, analyzed, interpreted, and implemented.

When we consider how to use data to drive instruction, it's best to use a cycle such as this one to guide our practices.

As you view the data cycle, note there are four stages within it:

• Stage 1: Collect data that measures student performance and/or mastery of objective(s)

• Stage 2: Analyze the data• Stage 3: Interpret the data to

inform instruction that supports student success

• Stage 4: Plan and Implement instruction that meets the needs of your students

As you can see, the data cycle is aniterative process, meaning that we go through it from beginning to end, over and over again.

We can move through the data cycle in a moment's time to make quick decisions or move through it slower as we pause and reflect on which steps should be taken next.

Texas Education Code §38.003: Requires that all students in kindergarten & grade 1 be screened for dyslexia & related disorders and all students beyond first grade be screened or tested as appropriate. Students in Kindergarten should be screened by the end of the school year. The following components should be included within the screener:

Phonological Awareness Phonemic Awareness Sound-Symbol Recognition Letter knowledge Decoding Skills Spelling Listening Comprehension

Per TEC §38.003, staff administering the dyslexia screener should be: trained on characteristics of dyslexia and reading disorders, trained on the administration of the screener and interpretation of results, and a classroom teacher who holds a valid certification for Kindergarten/Grade 1* OR certified/licensed in

dyslexia.*Best practice is for the child's current classroom teacher to complete the screening.
