Editor’s NoteInsulationQuarterly is now officially a year old!! And a lot of growing has taken place in that year. A mere eight pages with our first issue, we have doubled in size to 16 pages with this edition. We have now featured three member profiles (Albrico Kaefer in the fall issue, Total-R Insulation Solutions in the spring issue and Adler Insulation on page 2 of this very issue), and have paying adver-tisers (thanks to SAIT, Amity Insulation Group and Roxul for your advertising support). And, of course, the pictures just keep getting better!

As you’ll see from this issue, it’s been a busy few months for TIAA. There was the South Chapter Murder Mystery night at Fort Calgary – a fun event that brought out nearly 70 members.

Captain Insulation made his debut at the

50th anniversary gala on May 12th, the Annual

General Meeting and golf tournament took place two

weeks later in late May, and then finally TIAA exhibited at

the Global Petroleum Show in Calgary June 12 – 14.

Have a great summer everyone, and we’ll gear back up in September with the TIAC Conference in Quebec City!

Adler Insulation & FirestoppingAdler Insulation & Firestopping has one claim to fame that is unlikely to be matched by any other TIAA member: two of their employees had the Adler logo tattooed on their forearms. Apparently, no liquor was involved in this decision, which started out as a bet.

Adler Insulation was founded in 1984 and has become is one of the largest commercial providers of mechanical insulation and structural fire protection in Western Canada. With offices in Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon, Adler’s scope of work ranges from pipe and duct insulation to firestopping to passive fire protection consulting. Adler’s strong focus on promoting safety, health and wellness is evident through the following accomplishments:

Adler’s firestop division is certified under the Un-derwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) Qualified Firestop Contractor’s Program

Adler is a member of ISNetworld

Adler has been awarded a Certificate of Recognition in safety

Adler is affiliated with the Firestop Contractor International Association

Adler is a Hilti Accredited Firestop Specialty Contractor

Adler has worked on some notable projects these last few years. The Edmonton Interna-tional Airport Expansion, Fort McMurray Water Treatment Plant, Kearl Oil Sands, Vernon Jubilee Hospital and the Innovation Centre for Engineering are among some of these.

Adler’s attention to delivering excellent customer service, a diverse work force and a positive work environment and culture are factors that have enabled them to grow.

Adler has been a supporter of TIAA since joining the organization back in 2005, and their TIAA representative, Curtis Schoepp, is a regular attendee at TIAA events.

Board of DirectorsTIAA consists of two chapters (south and north). Each chapter has their own board representatives (a president, a vice-president and two directors). These board roles are elected positions determined at a fall chapter member meeting each year. The provincial president alternates each term between the southern and northern chapter president. Board members serve in a volunteer role and are not compensated for their service. They are required to act within their authority, to exercise due care and to observe fiduciary responsibilities in acting on behalf of the membership.

TIAA – Making a DifferenceTIAA is three years into their five year $250,000 donation agreement with NAIT. As part of this generous contri-bution from TIAA, $50,000 is donated to the NAIT Insulator Apprenticeship Program every May from 2010 until 2014. Given that, at the time of the signing of the agreement, NAIT was the sole Alberta-based training for me-chanical insulation, this donation is truly an investment in the future insulation industry workforce.

As part of this donation and recogni-tion agreement, TIAA has naming rights to the insulator lab (now known as the Thermal Insulation Association of Alberta Lab), is recognized in the NAIT annual donor report and is recognized on the master donor wall located at NAIT’s main campus.

The charts on the right hand side of this page show the impacts this donation has made on the program since 2010.

TIAA – Supporting the Industry The British Columbia Insulation Contractors Association (BCICA) created the Western Canadian Mesothelioma Foundation in 2007 with the goal of providing free mesothelioma testing for at-risk individuals in Western Canada. TIAA made a $50,000 do-nation to this worthy cause in 2010, and continues to support the annual BCICA golf tournament which raises funds in support of the foundation, most recently with a $5,000 donation.

In April, TIAA made a $2,500 donation to the Skills Champion Committee in order to help fund the attendance of Calgary Board of Education high school students at the Skills Canada Competition. The more exposure that high school students have to the mechanical insulation industry, the better, and TIAA was pleased to help support this initiative. Meet the 2012 competitors and read more about this year’s competition on page 10.

TIAA is recognized on the master donor wall located on NAIT’s main campus.

TIAA’s 50th Anniversary Gala Saturday, May 12, 2012Westerner Park, 4847A – 19 Street, Red Deer

TIAA knows how to throw a party! On May 12th, TIAA members and their families came together at Westerner Park in Red Deer to celebrate this milestone anniver-sary. Captain Insulation made his highly anticipated debut, much to the delight of the children in attendance. Several door prizes were given out, attendees were treated to a caricaturist, a profes-sional photo station, and a photo booth was also made available to capture those silly shots that can only be done in a photo booth. Thanks to everyone who came out, and here is to another 50 wonderful years in the mechanical insulation industry.

The mechanical insulation industry was well represented at this year’s Skills Canada Competition, which ran from May 13 – 16 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. Skills Canada brings together over 500 young people from all over Canada to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas. Participants (young Canadians studying a skilled trade or technology) are given the opportunity to be tested against exacting standards and against their peers from across the nation. Students vie for the honour of being crowned the best in their chosen discipline.

Competitors participating in the mechanical insulation trade are required to dem-onstrate their skills in working with insulation and PVC/aluminum finishing materi-als. They complete an insulation portion and a finishing portion of a project and work in teams of two.

TIAA was proud to sponsor six Skills Canada participants in 2012

Blown Away...Visitors to TIAA’s try-a-trade booth at this year’s Skills Canada got the opportunity to create a hand held windmill using pvc and folded aluminum as a handle. This event was so popular that over 200 of windmills were made and the organizers ran out of material on both days!

The competitors placed as follows:

1. Brandon Simms – Northern Industrial Insulation

2. Sean Johnston – Hallbook

3. Shawn Killam – Transfield

4. Mitchell MacMurchy – Kellogg, Brown & Root

5. Kevin Teske – Cobra Services

6. Brian Lachappelle – Dewar Western

Thanks to all competitors for your participation!
