Murrells Inlet 2020 Welcomes A New Executive Director

Dear Friends of the Inlet,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying this beautiful Inlet we call home. We are so lucky to live in a place that is second to none.

I am thrilled to join Murrells Inlet 2020 as the Executive Director. I am a Grand Strand native and have called Murrells Inlet my home for over 3 years. My passion for this community runs deep. I am so fortunate to call many of you friends and colleagues and hope to meet the rest of you soon. I am beyond excited to be a part of such a wonderful organization at just the right time. There are so many invigorating things happening right before our eyes and Murrells Inlet 2020 is in the best spot we have been in years thanks to the tireless efforts of our Board of Directors and your gener-osity. So much generosity! How cool that we all get to be a part of shaping our community and what it will look like for our children and their children?! Preserving the creek is vitally important to our community’s health, and so is allowing our local businesses to thrive. I look forward to us all continuing to work together to make Murrells Inlet a great place to live, work, and visit!

If you see me out and about in the community, stop and say Hi! I love meeting new people! If you see me on the creek or the river, wave! There isn’t a better place to be!

Sincerely,Meredith MillenExecutive DirectorMurrells Inlet 2020

Murrells Inlet 2020 Strategic Plan Update

Murrells Inlet 2020 created a strategic plan in 2016 based on a survey that was given to community members. Since the inception of the Murrells Inlet 2020 strategic plan, the Board of Directors uses it as a guide to moving forward and implementing progress. The plan contains 6 key pillars. Each pillar is described below, along with the progress made.

I. Promote Infrastructure Improvements, Pedestrian Safety and BeautificationGoal: Identify constituents’ preferences for infrastructure and community improvements and promote their completion through coordination with implementing organizations - federal, state, local, private, or other.

Progress Points:Implementation of 4 crosswalks in the Marshwalk area along with restriping of almost 4 miles of bike lanes of bike lanes on Highway 17 Business. Multiple yellow signs mark the crosswalks and the crosswalk zones and thermal reflective paint was used on the crosswalks and the *bike lanes to better identify them for drivers.

The announcement of the Inlet to Intracoastal Multipurpose Path, the “I2I,” occurred in April 2017. Phase one of the three phase project is currently in engineering phase and will likely begin construction in early 2018. The I2I was the main topic of the Spring Chowder Talk and the map rendering has been shared at multiple festivals and events.

The photo below is of one of the four newly constructed pedestrian crosswalks through the Marshwalk district.

II. Promote Environmental AwarenessGoal: Offer education to Murrells Inlet residents and visitors on the unique features of our environment and the imperative nature of taking care of it, and to encourage best environmental practices.

Progress Points: The Enviroscape model has been used at various community events to educate youth about the effects of stormwater runoff. Events include Blessing of the Inlet and the Spring Tide Community Clean-Up.

Work with the Coastal Waccamaw Stormwater Education Consortium regularly to promote environmentaleducation activities throughout the community and to local government agencies.

Murrells Inlet 2020 Strategic Plan Update Continued

III. Promote Local CommerceGoal: Promote local commerce and the participation of its leaders in achieving community goals.

Progress Points:Murrells Inlet 2020 attended the Marshwalk Association meeting in April to update the business owners on the crosswalks, discuss uniform LED lighting, introduce the new Executive Director to the group, and answer any questions the group had.

By hosting successful, large-scale events, Murrells Inlet 2020 has been very successful at attracting visitors to the Murrells Inlet area. Many of those who attend the events are from neighboring zip codes.

IV. Promote Water Quality and Wetlands Preservation for Future GenerationsGoal: Promote the stewardship of our watersheds, water quality, and wetlands for future generations by educating the current generation regarding the value added by preserving our natural resources.

Progress Points:MI2020 has been working with various partners across Georgetown County on the implementation of the Murrells Inlet Watershed Plan through a 319 grant from DHEC. The filtrexx strips have been installed in all of the locations within the watershed in both Horry and Georgetown County. The bioswale project has been installed at Sara Js and is working as intended. Floating wetlands are slated to be installed at Marina Colony pond and at Melody Drive pond in the coming weeks. All plans and project scope have been finalized with the vendor floating island solution.

Murrells Inlet 2020 volunteers continue to participate in a local Water Quality Monitoring Program headed by Coastal Carolina University.

V. Improve Communications, Marketing, and Public RelationsGoal: Improve communications to achieve more effectively the goals of MI2020, while raising the profile of the organization and the causes and events it sponsors.

Progress Points:Murrells Inlet 2020 implemented a new website. The new website is much more user friendly for community members and guests alike. The website address is www.MurrellsInletSC.com.

2017 events are all scheduled and dates have been published to the public. The event dates can be found on our website and Facebook page.

Multiple events occurred in 2016 and early 2017 that aided in raising the profile of Murrells Inlet 2020. These events include: The MI2020 Race for the Inlet, the MI2020 Oyster Roast, Murrells Inlet Christmas Parade, Spring and Fall Chowder Talks, Spring Tide Community Clean-Up, Fall Haul and more.

VI. Strengthen The OrganizationGoal: Strengthen the organization through formalized pursuit of revenue, professional development, updated guidelines, and networking.

Progress Points:Murrells Inlet 2020 staff attended a South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations conference in Columbia. The event included marketing, financial, and grant sessions.

Over $19,000 was raised for Murrells Inlet 2020 on Palmetto Giving Day, a 24-hour online fundraising event for nonprofit organizations serving Georgetown County. Part of the total was from a $7,500 matching grant received from The Bunnelle Foundation.

The new MI2020 Executive Director and an Advsiory Council member attended a free training course held by The Bunnelle Foundation. The course was facilitated by a CPA and was titled, “How to Make Your Nonprofit Financially Fit.”

Murrells Inlet 2020 staff, board members, and volunteers visited the Georgetown County landfill in April 2017 with the purpose of improving our knowledge of landfill services and how to better implement our mission of “promoting the

conservation of our natural environment while fostering local community and commerce.”

The group met Amanda Curl, the Environmen-tal and Training Coordinator for the landfill. She

walked us through their nature trail, their new nature center (suffered damaged from Hurricane

Matthew) and environmental science labs (for teaching). The group went on to take a tour of the

landfill and recycling center where we learned more about how to best sort our recyclables and where our

trash goes. It was an impressive tour that helped us gain much more of an understanding and

appreciation for our Georgetown County landfill partner.

2016 Golden Oyster Award WinnerCongratulations to Sandra Bundy on receiving the 2016 Golden Oyster Award for Environmental Stewardship

Congratulations to Sandra Bundy for receiving the 2016 Golden Oyster Award for Environmental Stewardship in honor and memory of Dr. H.P. “Pat” Worrell. This award was designed by the Creek Preservation Committee of

Murrells Inlet 2020 to do two very important things. First, the award recognizes and rewards those businesses,

organizations or individuals whose action show respect and care for the Inlet landscape and waters. Second, the award brings light to the issue of Inlet conservation and helps the

rest of us to become better stewards of the Inlet.

Her name will be placed alongside past Golden Oyster Award winners on a plaque on Veteran’s Pier.

Murrells Inlet 2020 Announces the Inlet to Intracoastal “I2I” Multipurpose Path

Murrells Inlet 2020 formally unveiled plans to build a four-mile multipurpose path that will create a vital link for walkers, bikers and runners to travel between the Inlet and the Intracoastal Waterway. The Inlet to Intracoastal Multipurpose Path, or I2I, will be completed in three phases and will offer area residents and visitors a safe, convenient way to travel by foot or bike. It will connect the Intracoastal Waterway to the U.S. Highway 17 Business at its crossings with Wachesaw Road and Macklen Avenue. The new path will be built with a five-foot buffer between the path and local roads. In residential areas, it will be constructed along existing rights-of-way.

The I2I, a public-private partnership, has received significant funding from Georgetown County and Tidelands Health. The county has approved funding for the first phase of the project, while Tidelands Health will construct the portion of the path that runs along the perimeter of the health system’s properties near Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital. Construction on the first phase of the project is expected to begin by early 2018. The initial one-mile section will stretch from the MarshWalk across the campus of Tidelands Waccamaw to Wachesaw Park.

Plans to develop the path are the direct result of a 2015 community study that identified the development of new multipurpose paths as a top priority for Murrells Inlet. Even those who don’t actively use the path will benefit indirectly. A study by Coastal Carolina University’s E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business estimates the path, once completed, will provide a $1.2 million economic boost to the area. Property values within 500 feet of the I2I are projected to increase by about 5 percent. In addition, as part of the project, drainage along the path will be improved, reducing standing water, mosquito breeding areas and helping to reduce trash accumulation.
