Ann: (Crying) I tried but it was never good enough! I submitted to him as the head of the home as the Bible says.

81.

Pastors wife: Ann, do you realize that the next verse after wives submit to your husbands say that husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the church?

A5 First Discussion

101.

James: Much of this story is troubling. Why do you think Ann stayed with Joe so long?

102.

Magdalene: I think one reason is that Joe had made her feel so helpless.

103.

Rebecca: And she did enjoy some good moments with Joe when they made up and came back together.

104.

Magdalene: Maybe despite everything, she still loved him.

105.

Stephen: Then there was a practical reason. She wasnt earning enough to start with to have a place of her own.

106.

Magdalene: - and maybe she felt Joe would hurt her, or even kill her, if she tried to leave.

107.

Rebecca: And she thought that a woman should obey her husband whatever happens.

108.

Stephen: Well, the Bible says the husband is the head over the wife.

109.

Magdalene: Yes, but it also says, husbands, love your wives like Christ loved the church.

110.

James: Thats right! Now what helped her get away from Joe?

111.

Magdalene: Her friend Mary really helped.

112.

Stephen: Yes, she needed someone nearby, someone she could trust.

113.

Rebecca: Actually, she was lucky to get away when Joe was so angry. If he had caught her, he would have beaten her! It would have been safer for her to wait until things were calm, then sneak off.

114.

James: True. Why do you think Joe started abusing Ann in the first place?

115.

Magdalene: He had a troubled past. He didnt grow up in a happy family and he probably had problems from that.

116.

Stephen: Yeah, maybe he saw his father beat his mother and called her names.

117.

Rebecca: - and I think the crying baby didnt help.

118.

Stephen: Yeah and lets not forget Joe lost his job. I wonder if he felt inadequate.

119.

Magdalene: and the drinking . . .

120.

James: These things were like fuel on the fire, but they are not the source of Joes problems. So how do you think Joe could be helped?

121.

Magdalene: He needs help to understand his personal problems.

122.

Group: Uh-huh.

123.

Stephen: Yes, he needs to have someone to talk to who can help him.

124.

Magdalene: And he needs to do this by himself! Not with Ann! Husbands like him can be so nice with a counselor, but later at home they beat their wife for the things she said to the counselor.

125.

Rebecca: And he needs to really feel the pain he has caused Ann and the baby

126.

James: If a husband is to love his wife as Jesus loved the church then he should use his power to show love to her. To a more personal question: how do you think our churches would help people who are suffering abuse in their homes?

127.

Magdalene: You know, James, the problem is that people dont talk about it, so the church doesnt even know theres a problem.

128.

James: So we need to make a way for people who are suffering in their homes to express what is going on.

129.

Magdalene: And we need to train more people in our churches to listen. So often everyone thinks that only the pastor can help people.

130.

Rebecca: And we need safe places for people to go to if they have to leave their home.

131.

Magdalene: I have several friends who are abused by their husbands. Im going to talk to them about all this.

150.

Servant (to Abigail): Abigail, David sent messengers to give our master his greetings, but he insulted them. Yet these men they were very good to us. You need to do something or David will kill us all!

155.

Storyteller: But she did not tell her husband Nabal. She followed her servants and met David coming towards her house. She bowed down in front of him.

Fade out Eastern Sunset

156.

Abigail: Oh, David, David, please dont pay any attention to my husband. I beg you. He is a fool! Please accept these gifts I prepared for you. Please dont kill innocent people because of that foolish man.

157.

David: Praise be to the Lord who sent you today. May you be blessed! If you had not come quickly, not one single man belonging to Nabal would be left alive by daybreak. Go home in peace.

158.

Music :Exotic Adventure

160.

Servant: My Abigail, my master David wants you to become his wife.

B4 Second Discussion

Music- Lesson 8 song for a few seconds

166.

James: Normally in Jewish culture, women submitted to their husbands. What Abigail was not submissive! Do you think she did the right thing?

167.

Stephen: Well, I think wives supposed to submit to their husband,. . .

168.

Magdalene: There are limits! If Abigail hadn't gone there to beg David and send him presents, can you imagine the kind of massacre that would have happened that night?

169.

Rebecca: Yeah. And she did it quickly. If she had taken even a bit of time, it would have been too late!

170.

Magdalene: And she had to do it secretly.

171.

James: All right. So how can this story help us today?

172.

Rebecca: Well, for me it shows us that there are times when submitting to a husband would cause a lot of people a lot of suffering.

173.

Magdalene: Yes, and I think husbands are better off if they discuss things with their wives! The Bible says we should submit to one another.

174.

Stephen: Well, I think that being a husband is a huge responsibility. I pray one day that I will be a good one and that I will find a wife who is intelligent and beautiful.

175.

Magdalene/Rebecca: We pray for you Stephen.

176.

James: That would be wonderful, Stephen. And when God give you your wishes, I pray that you love and respect her.

177.

Together: Amen.
