‘What a lark!’

‘Mountain paradise’‘ Memel’ means ‘ a place surrounded by waters’ in old Prussian, and this pristine little dorp can hardly

have a more appropriate name. It is a nature lover’ s

paradise, and its location right in the centre of a spectacular, internationally recognised RAMSAR wetlands site on the K lip River lures birders from around the globe to this Free State dorpie. The nearby presence of the Drakensberg Moun-

tains (they are only 25 km away), unparalleled stargazing, and the ecological draw card, the mag-

nificent Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve, have attracted

an eclectic crowd. Many artists, photographers and

musicians have downscaled to Memel to revel in this haven of tranq uillity.

If you are in search of a rural mountain escape, look no further than Montagu. Once again situated

along the ‘ top- dorp’ Route 62, this is a village where

outdoor adventure, vernacular architecture and earthy culture collide in a glorious feel- good melee.

It is no wonder Montagu has been voted ‘ Dorp of the Year’ before, and visitors are sure to agree once

they take in the glorious views and genuine and unhurried hospitality of the locals.Situated j ust on 18 5 km from Cape Town along

Route 62, Montagu is superbly positioned as a weekend destination. The contiguous Langeberg ranges serve as a perfect ex ample of typical Cape

Fold mountains, with their contorted striations the

cherry on top of the natural grandeur of the town’ s

setting on the K eisie and Hingna rivers. This scenic little corner of the K annaland region is

celebrated for patchwork vineyards, orchards, fields

of herbs and hot springs, while fine examples of Victorian architecture grace the village streets. An

agreeable climate delivers cool and wet winters, while summer strings together near- continuous hot

and sunny days.

» Head to Memel for a relax ing weekend of birding,

a spit braai and some serious fishing during the Memel

Bass Classic (December).

» The annual Montagu Mountain Mania Festival (end

of April) combines trail running, mountain biking, rock

climbing and other adventure sports with leisure activi-

ties such as wine tasting, river floats, food stalls and

local music.

Abundant water means the grass in Memel can grow over 2m tall – higher

than a man’s head – and this was one of the key reasons for early settlement.

‘We’re c ooking !’

The Tswana people originally discovered the now world- renowned hot water springs in the 18 00s, and named the place Bela- Bela (or Boil- Boil). They soon settled in, not only for the water’ s fabled heal-ing powers, but also because the maj estic moun-tains, lush vegetation, abundant springs and good rainfall meant a relatively easy life.

Today, Bela- Bela is a charming bushveld town where tourists and locals alike can relax in these healing hot springs. Other outdoor opportunities abound, from scenic hikes in the Waterberg ranges to venturing out on a game drive into one of the many outlying nature reserves.

In 18 8 0, J an Grobler and Carl van eerden were the first uropeans to

happen upon the springs. While out on a hunt they noticed a huge cloud that looked like steam, and it wasn’ t long before people came from far and wide to enj oy the ‘ badoord’ (or bath resort).

Initially known as Hartingsburg, the town changed names when British forces occupied it during the Anglo- Boer War, and referred to it as ‘ Warm Baths’ .

T he thermal spring bubbles out of the earth at Bela- Bela at a

temperature of and a o rate of 22,0 0 0 litres per hour.

‘G atew ay to the B arrier of Spears’

The beautiful little village of Bergville is located about halfway between J ohannesburg and Durban, nestling against the dramatic backdrop of the Royal Natal National Park’ s Amphitheatre. During the 18 00s, the mighty uThukela River that languidly encircles the town formed a natural border between the Z ulu kingdom to the northeast and the then Colony of Natal to the south.

Bergville’ s roots may be traced back to 18 9 7 , when a retired sea captain decided to establish a small trading post on his farm K leine Waterval. These days, the village is surrounded by an active farming community, with dairy, beef, maize and wheat being produced. The region teems with historic sites and buildings, from the old British blockhouse, set in the Courthouse grounds, to Sandford Park Country Hotel, which started life as a coach house way back in 18 5 0.

Thanks to the unparalleled splendour of the sur-rounding Drakensberg peaks, Bergville boasts an outdoor arena made for playing. Everything goes, from breathtaking hikes through fern filled forests or ower bedecked foothills to top class birding and a treasure- trove of San rock art. Take note: the weather here may change in an instant, with 8 5 % of the annual rain falling between October and March, while snow often covers the high peaks in winter.

‘Starlight and wildflowers’

Who would have guessed … Calvinia was named after the religious reformer J ohn Calvin, who had a profound in uence on the utch Reformed religion in South Africa. The formation of the town dates back to 18 5 1 and since, its development has very much been based on the local agricultural industry. It remains one of the Northern Cape’ s key regional growth points and lies at the centre of one of South Africa’ s main mutton- and wool- producing areas.

The town’ s location on the stunning Oorlogskloof River sees it surrounded by the at topped, dolerite mountains so typical of the Hantam region. (‘ Han-tam’ comes from the K hoi language, and can be translated as ‘ where the red bulbs grow’ ; this refers to red sage).

It is no wonder botanists, horticulturalists and plant lovers in general ock here, especially during the spectacular spring bloom in the arid centre of SA. Literally millions of owers burst forth from every nook and cranny, spreading over tens of kilometres, with the display usually peaking between mid-August and early September. Botterboom, kersbas and the rare sterboom are also found here.

arthly oral displays are mimicked in the night skies above, with astronomy enthusiasts coming here to get their celestial fix. nd fix may also be the operative word if you dare to attend the annual AfrikaBurn celebration, a cult festival based on the internationally acclaimed Burning Man.

2. Akkerendam N ature Reserve and H iking TrailEven though facilities at Akkerendam were rather unkempt last time I visited, the hiking trail offers an ex cellent entry point into the surrounding Hantam foothills. The reserve is a bird sanctuary, with rare sightings such as the Cinnamon- breasted Warbler on the list of eager birders. 3. H antam treats‘ Rural cuisine’ is often considered a mutually ex clusive term, but Hantam Huis Restaurant rates as one of those rare, small- town culinary gems. This licensed establishment will delight you with everything from traditional fare such as bobotie to dumplings and a full range of other delicacies. The building dates back to 18 5 4 and has been declared a national monument.

4. H antam H uisBuilt in 18 5 4 , this is the oldest authentic house in Calvinia. It has been restored and is the hub of many activities – it has a licensed restaurant (one of the top 100 in the world according to Diners Club), a museum and a curio shop. 5. Tankwa- K aroo N ational ParkThe ex treme remoteness of the 8 0,000ha Tankwa K aroo National Park won’ t be everyone’ s cup of tea, but the diverse Succulent K aroo biome, supreme sunsets and a minimalist landscape are utterly mind- ex panding.

» Calvinia is known for its mutton and other meat, so having the annual H antam Vleisvees here is a no- brainer. This festival celebrates meat in all its visceral glory, with braais, stews, curries, sosaties and potj ies

galore – you can even have a ‘ smiley’ , or cooked sheep’ s head, before dancing the night away with Miss Vleisfees.

‘Fabulous floral displays’

The primary temptation luring you northwards along the N7 towards Clanwilliam is a massive and mono-lithic mountain by the name of Cederberg. These sandstone ranges are without a doubt one of the Western Cape’ s favourite outdoor playgrounds, and the laid- back town of Clanwilliam serves as a great stopover here on the edge of the region.

This dorp is situated at the con uence of the Olifants and J an Dissels rivers, with the amber gor-geousness of the craggy Cederberg landscape as a backdrop. ndemic rooibos and buchu tea ourish on the harsh Cederberg slopes, in stark contrast with the verdant valley carved by the Olifants River far below. Irrigation canals sustain ex tensive citrus farms, so come spring time the air is suf-fused with the scent of orange blossoms, while the countryside itself is trans-formed by fabulous wild ower displays.Get ready for sandstone heaven once

you cross the meandering Olifants River on the gravel road to Algeria. Undulating fynbos slopes, contorted rock formations and natural rock pools beckon in a landscape largely unchanged since the days of the early San hunters who once roamed here. Lose yourself within the more than 7 ,100ha of rugged and remote wilderness, and ex perience a place where dramatic rock formations, San rock art sites, prime climbing and unspoiled mountain pools will captivate outdoor adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Bristling with panoramic views, dramatic cliff faces and an inex haustible supply of fresh air, this is j ust the place for headspace when you visit the scenic Eastern Free State region.

gargantuan utting outcrop, collo uially referred to as the ‘ Titanic’ , guards over the entrance to Clarens, welcoming visitors from far and wide to what is in essence one of rural SA’ s most creative communities. The bustling little dorp is crammed with enough craft initiatives and up- market art gal-leries to keep a constant in ux of tourists happily ensconced within the pictures ue streets.

Adventurers are spoiled for choice, too, with a number of established outdoor operators offering action options such as whitewater rafting, clay pigeon shooting, archery, rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking. Dozens of foodie j oints line the streets, with live music and shows a nightly occurrence during the high season.

Spring is a firm favourite, with gossamer willows and a profusion of mountain blossoms, whilst the autumnal shades of rustling groves of Lombard poplars attract artists, photographers and nature lovers. Winter may be icy and snow often dusts the high peaks, where rare species of birds include the Bearded Vulture (lammergeier) as well as the elusive Bald Ibis.

‘Welc om e to w indm ill c ountry ’

Sprawled along the banks of the Great Fish River, Cradock comes with an unex pected dollop of culture to add to its strong agricultural foundations. This is not j ust another Eastern Cape dorp, and the eclectic mix of locals will waste no time pointing out the many amazing buildings, characters and outdoor attractions that make their town special.

Historically, Cradock was established as a frontier stronghold by Lieutenant Governor and war leader Sir Andries Stockenströ m, in 18 12. Named for Sir J ohn Cradock, the incumbent Cape Governor from 18 11 to 18 13, it proudly stands as one of South Africa’ s oldest towns. To put its timeline in contex t: the town saw the start of the Great Trek, survived the collapse of the ostrich boom, and was home to

apartheid’ s ‘ Cradock Four’ . Here in the heartland, visitors can learn more about these anti- apartheid icons or ex plore the town’ s treasure- trove of historic buildings. These include the likes of the Victoria Manor, a hotel since 18 4 1, as well as the home of literary legend, Olive Schreiner.

Beyond the hustle and bustle, a typically rugged broken- K arroid landscape awaits discovery. Dove-egg blue skies by day, scintillating starry skies at night and a constant supply of crisp K aroo air will regenerate mind, body and soul. Beware ‘ mad- dog’ summer temperatures, and winter nights when the temperature will drop way below zero.

The town of Cullinan’ s claim to fame is the discov-ery in of the largest gem uality diamond ever found. Duly named the Cullinan Diamond – in hon-our of Sir Thomas Cullinan who owned the diamond mine at the time – it put the little mining village on the world map. The town still serves the Cullinan Mine (previously the Premier Mine), the third largest diamond producer in the country.

A wander down Cullinan’ s Oak Avenue is truly a trip back in time … lined with j acaranda and oak trees, it’ s a living museum brimming with beautifully preserved Edwardian- period buildings, breathtaking gardens and a number of restaurants and coffee shops. The town becomes a hive of activity on weekends, with day- trippers from all over enj oying the rural setting and scenic surrounds.

‘What a lark!’

‘Mountain paradise’

‘ Memel’ means ‘ a place surrounded by waters’ in

old Prussian, and this pristine little dorp can hardly

have a more appropriate name. It is a nature lover’ s

paradise, and its location right in the centre of a

spectacular, internationally recognised RAMSAR

wetlands site on the K lip River lures birders from

around the globe to this Free State dorpie.

The nearby presence of the Drakensberg Moun-

tains (they are only 25 km away), unparalleled

stargazing, and the ecological draw card, the mag-

nificent Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve, have attracted

an eclectic crowd. Many artists, photographers and

musicians have downscaled to Memel to revel in

this haven of tranq uillity.

If you are in search of a rural mountain escape,

look no further than Montagu. Once again situated

along the ‘ top- dorp’ Route 62, this is a village where

outdoor adventure, vernacular architecture and

earthy culture collide in a glorious feel- good melee.

It is no wonder Montagu has been voted ‘ Dorp of

the Year’ before, and visitors are sure to agree once

they take in the glorious views and genuine and

unhurried hospitality of the locals.Situated j ust on 18 5 km from Cape Town along

Route 62, Montagu is superbly positioned as a

weekend destination. The contiguous Langeberg

ranges serve as a perfect ex ample of typical Cape

Fold mountains, with their contorted striations the

cherry on top of the natural grandeur of the town’ s

setting on the K eisie and Hingna rivers.

This scenic little corner of the K annaland region is

celebrated for patchwork vineyards, orchards, fields

of herbs and hot springs, while fine examples of

Victorian architecture grace the village streets. An

agreeable climate delivers cool and wet winters,

while summer strings together near- continuous hot

and sunny days.

Abundant water means the grass in

Memel can grow over 2m tall – higher

than a man’s head – and this was one of

the key reasons for early settlement.
