Eventually, all of Colorado’s historic newspapers will be available on the Web in a single database. CHNC currently includes 136 newspapers published in Colorado from 1859 to 1933. Newspapers come from 71 cities and 41 counties throughout the state, which were published in English, German, Spanish, or Swedish. CHNC contains over 449,000 digitized pages from these newspapers. CHNC now relies exclusively on financial contributions to add new materials to the collection. Local libraries, museums, foundations and other organizations have funded the digitization of over 2,000,000 pages. When a community raises funds for digitization of historic newspapers, turn- around time is approximately 3-4 months. www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org

Newspapers “In reading books and magazines in almost any part of Colorado, you realize that newspapers are the only thing really in existence that tell actually what the people were doing at that time, how they lived, what problems they were having, what the prices of their goods they had to buy were in relation to their wages, what their entertainment was, and their births and deaths. The newspapers are the real source to find this history.”

-Leroy Wingenbach-

Newspaper Digitization “Our Newspaper Digitization Project was in the planning stages in 2004, after we discovered papers never microfilmed in the basement of the Herald Democrat office” said Director Nancy McCain. “In 2006, we invested $29,398.75 from several funding agencies to digitize and put some of these earliest newspapers online. We now have over 50,000 pages online and they are getting a huge amount of use.”

MORE TO GO There are still more than 125,000 pages of Leadville newspapers prior to our copyright cutoff date of 1923. It will cost about $180.000 to digitize all issues. Lake County Public Library began with the earliest dates and is working to maximize daily coverage to 1923.
