I was delighted to see BidAir Cargo making an impression at the FIATA Annual Conference which was well

supported by delegates from around the Republic, the continent and the world. Our capabilities benefit clients and partners by putting our extensive domestic and regional network and service portfolio at their disposal.

The Conference theme was “Where technology and logistics meet”. This is a subject close to our hearts as technology is playing an increasing role both on the demand and supply side. We have seen an explosion of “want it now” from business and the public with mobile technology making order placement and payment instant.

Many businesses such as retail merchandising, automotive servicing,

medicine, ships and aviation spares, project management - to name just a few - now require time-definite delivery and advance notice of products in transit to operate effectively as they have skilled teams on hand who cannot be left idle awaiting items.

In fulfilling these urgent requirements, our industry has to be painstaking in ensuring that there is no corner-cutting in the vital area of cargo security procedures, addressed in a separate article.

I had the privilege of acting as one of the judges at the Annual Logistics Achiever Awards, showcasing creativity, innovation and problem-solving of the highest order. Where a player leads this provides an impulse for competitors to raise their game. The ripple effect is

driving our sector as it strides farther ahead of outdated methods in the transport of express items.

In closing, I must recognise and thank all who continue to support and work with us - clients, suppliers, partners, our dedicated people and the authorities.

On behalf of all of us at BidAir Cargo, our best wishes for the coming festive season.

More than ever, this is the time of year when close co-operation is vital. We urge clients to engage with us so their enhanced volumes can be accommodated when demand is at its peak and cargo can move efficiently through the system.

Our operational people are ready for the intensive workload that the year-end brings but there are also some actions you should take to help ensure everything goes according to plan.

Security • In the interests of safety and security, please make

certain that all individual items in a consignment are fully and accurately described and detailed on documentation. There is an article in this edition of Cargo Chat specifically devoted to the question of Dangerous Goods. Any misdeclarations will result in delays to your shipment, disappointment for your customers and possibly other consequences.

• Security protocols at the airports are rigidly enforced. Please make sure your drivers and escorts have the correct identification with them. We strongly recommend the Identification and Verification System (IVS)

Accommodating your enhanced volumesTo be certain that your consignments are all accommodated, we recommend that you speak to your Key Account Manager about block space allotments on our freighter network over this period. We are always available to discuss any special requirements.

Peak Season Priorities

SAA STRIKEThe recent strike by South African Airways (SAA) caused uncertainty and had an impact on users of the express cargo and courier industry.

Fortunately, there are other daytime options on scheduled carriers and BidAir

Cargo has our own dedicated overnight freighter operations. Thus we were able to assist many companies who suddenly found themselves in need of cargo space at short notice.

At times of high demand, however, our

services may be constrained in offering accommodation for non-regular clients. Thus we recommend discussing your New Year express cargo requirements with your BidAir Cargo Key Account Manager to ensure your shipments are not left behind.

Dangerous Cargo:

Misdeclarations and incomplete declarations

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) requires under Part 108 of the Civil Aviation

Regulations that all commodities be fully and accurately declared for shipment.

BidAir Cargo management has become perturbed at recent instances where this has not happened. In particular, we are highly concerned about incidents where Dangerous Goods have not been declared as such when presented for carriage.

All of us in the industry are aware of the special attention needed when transporting Dangerous Goods. So it is the responsibility of the courier, forwarder or other party handing in the consignment to ensure that Dangerous Goods are identified and properly and fully declared as such on the documentation.

If misdeclarations occur accidentally because of ignorance or confusion regarding the regulations, personnel are in need of refresher education and training.

If any of your personnel in the transport chain are not fully aware of the risks and requirements relating to Dangerous Goods, we invite you to contact us. We regularly hold educational workshops centering on Dangerous Goods handling and regulations. Or if you cannot wait for the next workshop, we can put you in touch with aviation security experts who will arrange comprehensive training of your people at your workplace.

If there is a deliberate attempt to move Dangerous Goods without declaring them to avoid the costs and necessary procedures, the consequences are very serious. Such unethical activity puts lives and property at risk and does not belong in a responsible industry like ours.

Please be reminded that it is mandatory that all Dangerous Goods shipments be accompanied by Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and the required Dangerous Goods paperwork.

We have seen instances where consignments are declared as “three boxes” or “consolidation” without accompanying details as to the nature of the contents.

This will mean that the consignment is rejected for shipment, causing a delay until the documentation is complete and the contents are fully itemised and correctly described.

Moreover, the SACAA requires BidAir

Cargo to report all such occurrences of mis-declared or undeclared Dangerous Goods for further investigation by the authorities.

We therefore urge you again to comply fully with the regulations pertaining to Dangerous Goods shipments and accurate, complete declarations of all cargo handed in. Thank you.

Stay alert. Stay secure. Stay safe.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority lays great stress on the issue of Dangerous Goods (DG)

and the necessity for DG awareness and training.

BidAir Cargo has played our part by conducting Dangerous Goods briefings with the emphasis on commodity transparency and declaration. Workshops were hosted around the Republic during the latter part of October and early November. To ensure the word spread throughout the express supply chain, coverage was provided in smaller

towns, as well as the major centres.

“Our senior operations management engaged with over 600 delegates from client companies in Linbro Park, Pretoria, Rustenburg, Vanderbijlpark, Witbank, Nelspruit, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Polokwane, Montague Gardens,Stellenbosch, Port Elizabeth, George, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay and East London,” says Karl Davids, BidAir Cargo’s Chief Operating Officer (SA).

As well as what constitutes DG, special

interest was shown in the correct method of shipping UN3841 shipments (cell phones and laptops), lithium batteries, blood and wine. Delegates also raised the question of who is required to undertake DG training. There was also discussion about Material Safety Data Sheets.

“These briefings were enthusiastically received, reflecting the appetite for knowledge of this subject amongst the attendees,” says Karl. “We recommend that their respective companies follow up by enrolling staff on formal accredited DG training courses.”

SANParks: K9 Watchdog National ProjectPoaching in South Africa’s national parks is a scourge and countering it remains a major conservation challenge. Fortunately, the K9 Anti-Poaching Unit has proved to be a game-changer in the Kruger National Park. During 2017, all encounters with poachers that involved dogs resulted in arrests.

Muriel Sahd assisted with the handover to Johan de Beer from The South African National Parks.

The PetLounge is proud to support SANParks K9 in their endeavours to stamp out poaching. We

donated 15 canine transport boxes to be used for the various anti-poaching initiatives throughout the Kruger National Park.

Well-trained dogs such as the Bloodhound or Belgian Shepherds breeds are capable of tracking poachers in the field. They can also detect firearms, ammunition and wildlife products entering and exiting through park gates. These remarkable dogs can follow an hours-old scent over impressive distances..

An integral contributor to the success of this unit is the support of the SANParks Honorary Rangers. “When The Petlounge was invited to be part of this vital community initiative we seized the opportunity to help make a difference,” says Muriel Sahd, BidAir Cargo Chief Business Development Officer.

Holiday time – Don’t forget the petsThe holiday season is fast approaching and you’re busy booking flights and accommodation. Everyone is excited about those sunny leisure days ahead but you don’t like the idea of leaving the family pet behind.

Happily, you don’t have to!

The Petlounge will transport your beloved companion in comfort and safety to join you at your destination . Much preferable to a tearful farewell at the kennels.

Deliver your pet in an approved travel crate to be pampered by our specially-trained animal lovers at your local airport PetLounge. The PetLounge is peaceful, restful, a short trip away from the aircraft but well away from the noise and bustle of airport activity. Our PetLounge people will escort your pet aboard the aircraft shortly before departure and ensure that it is secure and comfortable for the flight.

Then you greet your pet at your destination PetLounge shortly after arrival. Your pet can travel on the same flight as you so the separation is minimal.

These days there are numerous pet-friendly guest houses and hotels at holiday resorts, so there is no excuse for leaving Fido or Mimi behind. Have a happy holiday with the whole family. You deserve it.

Make your booking on 011 230 4600 or visit www.petlounge.co.za

PS: If you don’t own an approved travel crate, don’t worry. You can hire one from The PetLounge.

Every day we are delighted to welcome cute, cuddly, precious pets and their owners at our Petlounge in the major airports. Every animal family member is special and cherished and we encounter many unforgettable characters.

It was love at first sight for our Cape Town International Airport PetLounge staff when Josie the Dachshund rolled through the doors for her journey to Johannesburg. Josie has mobility issues and was fitted with a small wheelchair for assistance with her movement. So it was essential for this to be accommodated in her specially-designed travel crate.

Josie and her sister Milly were very active doggies who would normally run around the house having an absolute ball. One day Josie suddenly became paralysed. She had an operation to try and restore mobility, followed by water therapy but sadly neither course of action was successful.

The inspiring story of Josie the dachshundby Natasha Willis, PetLounge Product Manager

Although Josie has not walked again, it hasn’t stopped her enjoying life and achieving fame. Wherever she goes, she works her way into people’s hearts and everyone wants to spoil her. She is one of the friendliest dogs and her owner says she loves the attention.

Josie’s therapist mentioned the case to Animal Talk Magazine and it was used in one of the articles. Josie was referred to Frontline for a TV advertisement in Germany. Naturally, this little winner Josie got the part!

“I know a lot of people feel sorry for her but trust me she’s living life to the fullest,” says Tammy, Josie’s mom.

It was a privilege for The Petlounge to make Josie’s journey comfortable, speedy and safe, wheelchair and all. We wish her a well-deserved long and happy life.
