Third Sunday after Pentecost June 21, 2020 Welcome & Announcements Prelude Linda Daily Prayer of the Day Children’s Time Prayer for Illumination Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-13 7 O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived; thou art stronger than I, and thou hast prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; every one mocks me. 8 For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9 If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. 10 For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived, then we can overcome him, and take our revenge on him.” 11 But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, they will not overcome me. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten. 12 O Lord of hosts, who triest the righteous, who seest the heart and the mind, let me see thy vengeance upon them, for to thee have I committed my cause. 13 Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers. Anthem Prelude, Suite No. 1, J.S. Bach, ed. S. Jones Hunter Cuyler

Third Sunday after Pentecost June 21, 2020

Welcome & Announcements Prelude Linda Daily Prayer of the Day Children’s Time Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-13

7 O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived; thou art stronger than I, and thou hast prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; every one mocks me. 8 For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9 If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones,

and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 10:24-39 24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant[a] above his master; 25 it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant[b] like his master. If they have called the master of the house Be-el′zebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. 26 “So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father’s will. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. 34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and a man’s foes will be those of his own household. 37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.

Virtual Sunday School Max Lucado's book You'll Get Through This

Max uses the story of Joseph and his brothers from the last part of Genesis, to show how God works with the messes in our lives to bring

about good.

Meeting today at 11:30 a.m. through Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88557239602

KEEPING IN TOUCH “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment.  And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40) The Gospel lesson today is a difficult passage. It is full of bad news about how people will receive the ministry of those who follow Jesus. One of Jesus’ most uncharacteristic sayings in Matthew 10:34 Jesus says, "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace but a sword.” Is Jesus saying that the disciples need to arm themselves and be ready to defend the teachings of Jesus. There is one other passage that comes to mind where Jesus mentions a sword. In Luke 22:35-36 we read, “And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” He said to them, “But now, let him who has a purse take it, and likewise a bag. And let him who has no sword sell his mantle and buy one.” This story continues with Peter telling Jesus that they have two swords. Jesus says, “It is sufficient.” Later in this same passage we read that when Judas and the temple guards come to arrest Jesus one of those swords is used against a servant of the priest, cutting off the servant’s ear. Jesus immediately says, “No more of this.” And Jesus heals the servant’s ear. Then Jesus goes peacefully to his trial and crucifixion. All of this begs the question, what does Jesus mean with all his talk about swords and betrayal and persecution. The early Christians understood the message to be a message about radical love. Many martyrs died while praying for those who were persecuting them. Just as Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34) The best explanation, I have heard, the one that comes closest to sorting all of this out for me, is that all of scripture must be read through the interpretive lens of the great commandment. By what authority are we to use this interpretive lens. The authority for studying the scripture this way comes right out of the mouth of Jesus. Jesus says, “On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:40) I and many other students of the Bible take that to mean that if anything seems to contradict the law of love, read it again and read more of the surrounding context. It’s amazing how often that simple exercise works to sharpen the meaning of these passages. That interpretive lens makes everything that we read in scripture clearer. It doesn’t remove all the mystery, but it points us in a more consistent direction. ~ Ted [email protected]

What the Women Saw? Do women matter to the kingdom of God?

Jesus was surrounded by both men and women during his ministry on earth. He saw, valued, and cared for women, and he still does today. Each one of us has a

significant role. Through this six-session study, you will discover who Jesus is through the unique perspective of women in the Bible. He equipped them, listened to them, walked with them, healed them, and empowered them.

And he does the same for you now.
