ABOUT THE CHRISTMAS CANTATA

The message of Christmas is one of deep and abiding joy! It is a message filled with the assurance that no matter how difficult the journey may seem; no matter how hopeless the situation may feel; no matter how long and dark the night may be, joy will eventually come. That is the promise of God: Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes with the morning. (Psalm 30:5b) We live in a word where short-term promises and quick fixes are often chosen over lasting solutions. It seems that we need to find ways to invest ourselves in experiences and people who will outlive us, and, in that way, make a difference for generations yet to come. There is a vast difference between a temporary thrill-ride and enduring joy. Jesus came to provide us with a deep and lasting joy; a joy that could truly fill the voice in our lives, a void that we often attempt to satisfy with temporal things. The angel said to some unsuspecting shepherds going about their nightly duties on a Judean hillside: Do not be afraid, for I bring you news of great joy! (Luke 2:10). There was nothing short-term about this message. Jesus had been born and the world would never be the same again. And like the shepherds, we have become recipients to this wonderful news of great joy! So what do we do with this news! My father used to say to me that "...with privilege comes responsibility." Jesus made a very similar statement: To whom much is given, much will be required. (Luke 12:48b) We who have been the recipients of this great news have the privilege and responsibility to share it. To celebrate it. To sing it. That is the reason for this Christmas musical. It is conceived as a vehicle to help us share, celebrate, and sing the joyous Christmas message! I pray that you and all who hear you sing this Christmas work will experience anew the joy of the compelling story of God becoming human and living with us in a way that changed our world forever!

Though our world is dark, Your light overcomes the darkness. Though we have wandered, Your love is steadfast. Though we lose our way, You have made a way.

Though our fear is great. Your joy is greater.

No, it's the time of year to show our BUMC staff how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication throughout the year! Please join with me and donate to our staff Christmas bonus, and when you do, make the check out to BUMC and write Staff Christmas Gift in the subject line. STEPHEN MINISTRY – In the summer of 1861, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s wife, Frances, died tragically in a fire. That first Christmas without her, he wrote in his diary, “How inexpressibly sad are the holidays.” The next year was no better, as he recorded,“ ‘A merry Christmas,’ say the children, but that is no more for me.”

In 1863, as the American Civil War was dragging on, Longfellow’s son joined the army against his father’s wishes and was critically injured. On Christmas Day that year, as church bells announced the

arrival of another painful Christmas, Longfellow picked up his pen and began to write, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. The poem begins pleasantly, lyrically, but then takes a dark turn. The violent imagery of the pivotal fourth verse ill suits a Christmas carol. “Accursed” cannons “thundered,” mocking the message of peace. By the fifth and sixth verses, Longfellow’s desolation is nearly complete. “It was as if an earthquake rent the hearth-stones of a continent,” he wrote. The poet nearly gave up: “And in despair I bowed my head; ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said.” But then, from the depths of that bleak Christmas day, Longfellow heard the irrepressible sound of hope. And he wrote this seventh stanza.

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep! The wrong shall fail, the right

prevail, with peace on earth, good-will to men!”

The war raged on and so did memories of his personal tragedies, but it could not stop Christmas. The Messiah

is born! He promises, “I am making everything new!” (Rev. 21:5).

If you are burdened this Christmas with tragedy or loss and would like someone to share your burdens, please contact a Stephen leader, Mary Ellen Parks, 843.368.1852 or Sara Jenkins 843.705.2172.

Each week, there is a STEPHEN MINISTER from BUMC assigned to hospital duty. If you hear of anyone in the hospital this week Dec 17 – 23, please call Sara Jenkins, 843.705.2172.

MIRACLE JARS – Miracle Jars for December are going to Helen’s Hope. This is a Bluffton

UMC mission that was created by Meredith Inglis, who was inspired when she was ill during her freshman/junior years of high school. Through her numerous stints of time in the hospital, she recognized the need to minister to sick children and their families who spend time in the hospital. Helen’s Hope, which Meredith named after her

grandmother, buys pillow pets and devotionals for nurses to distribute to patients at Beaufort Memorial Hospital who need encouragement and hope. In addition to the pillow pets and devotionals, Hilton Head Christian Academy’s (Meredith’s high school) art classes are painting ceiling tiles and artwork for the walls to decorate and brighten the atmosphere in the Beaufort Memorial children’s wing.

Carrefour Friends …

It is a shame that we only have one word, love, in English to cover all kinds of love. The kind of love that God shows all of His children involves unselfish giving. It is this same kind of love that the Bible commands us to show to one another. “You shall love your neighbor as yourself…. The stranger that dwells with you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself.”

— Leviticus 19:18, 34. Carrefour Friends was formed to make available specially trained volunteers to befriend and regularly visit

older adults who are experiencing the heartbreak of loneliness, social isolation, or a disruptive change to their support system. We currently have a backlog of 22 elderly residents who would like to have a volunteer visit them. Visits are made in one of our three contracted healthcare facilities right here in Bluffton. If you are interested in becoming a friend for someone who really needs one, please contact Jackie Tuohig at 913.748.5929 or email us at [email protected].

Carrefour Friends……care for friends.
