Third Sunday of Advent Sunday, December 11, 2016
OUR VISION: A world where people experience God’s love and are made whole.
OUR MISSION: To share the love of Jesus through compassion, inclusivity, creativity and learning.
Our 2016 Artists in Residence working on Jacob’s Dream: A Luminous Path, which is now complete and in the North Aisle.
11 a.m. Choral Eucharist
• If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We’re glad you’re here!
• Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Gym after the 11 a.m. service.
Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: “What do I need to receive? What do I have to give?” We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey!
– The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral
Welcome to Grace Cathedral
about today’s readings Isaiah 35:1-10, James 5:7-10, Matthew 11:2-11Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet.
From the darkness of prison, John the Baptist asks Jesus, “Are you the one we await?” Jesus’ response is to echo the words of Isaiah, proclaiming an advent of repair and renewal that turns the reliable limits of the world upside down. The coming of God’s kingdom is signaled by a flood of new possibilities and capabilities for all.
John has asked if Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One. Anointing can bestow authority and power, but, in this moment, Jesus seems to invite us to a different place, where a loving healer soothes with the intimacy of touch. “What did you go out to see?” Jesus asks of those whose expectations about the trappings of power have blinded them to the real, immediate presence of the anointing among them.
This week’s collect famously asks God to “stir up” power and might. How can we stir up our own power, which may manifest itself as patience, loving-kindness, regeneration? Henri Nouwen asks us to consider the difference between joy and happiness. Our happiness may be dependent on external factors, but joy contains an assurance of being beloved, even in adversity, and can free us to be more loving and generous. “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.”
Let us set out on that highway, “where not even fools go astray,” stirring up the power that comes with a commitment to joy and hope, knowing that God is our companion and our destination.
This reflection was written by Carol James, who has been part of the cathedral community for over a decade. She is the interim mentor of the Education for Ministry program, after co-mentoring from 2008-2013. Carol currently leads the evening prayer providers in our Jail Ministry and is a cathedral staff member.

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. !rough him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was cruci"ed under Pontius Pilate; he su#ered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glori"ed. He has spoken through the Prophets. The Readings
I9)$)" :;: !–!3
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus
it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall f lee away.

Be patient, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from
the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
M).."#? !!: 2–!!
When John the Baptist heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his
disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

jacob’s dream: behind the scenes
Jacob’s Ladder by Marc Chagall (1973)
Jacob’s Dream: A Luminous Path is the title of the stunning work of art created by our 2016 Artists in Residence, Benjamin Bergery and Jim Campbell, that now rises radiantly in the North Aisle of the cathedral. It is inspired by the Bible story in Genesis 28 about Jacob’s dream:
“He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.”
“Jacob’s Stairway” or “Jacob’s Ladder” is a theme richly illustrated in the history of art and architecture, with a wide range of imagery, from the Roman catacombs to the façade of the Bath, England cathedral to the paintings of Marc Chagall (image above). In physics, the phrase “Jacob’s Ladder” describes an electrical ascension, a spark that moves up a ladder made of two vertical parallel wires, propelled by a difference in voltages. The “luminous path” of Bergery and Campbell is composed of LED lights rising 50 feet high. The illuminated rungs act as a fragmented screen for moving images of figures that ascend and descend the ladder, some climbing arduously, others gliding effortlessly. The installation references not just the Bible story, but also the cathedral’s theme for 2016, “Home,” and the connection between our earthly home and our heavenly one.
