Rite of Sending At the 9 a.m. Mass this last weekend we celebrated the “Rite of Sending for Election” with Mitch Faidley, Abby Faidley, and Logan Malek, our catechu-mens. We have been praying for them during the intercessions and when they are dismissed weekly af-ter the homily. In recent weeks we have discerned their readiness for the initiation sacraments this Easter. After the rites were celebrated on Sunday morning, we sent them and their sponsors, Charity Noe and Meggan Machin, to the Bishop for the Rite of Election at St. Mary’s in Ottumwa. Based on the testimony given by the sponsors the Bishop declared the catechumens to be elect, chosen by God for the sacraments this Easter. During Lent, the elect enter the period of preparation called Purification and Enlightenment.

Offertory Enhancement The Samaritan woman arrived at Jacob’s well with an empty bucket. How often do we find that one of our im-portant buckets is empty? Perhaps it is the bucket of our soul, or of our heart, or of ambition, of relationships, of joy. Maybe the bucket of the dreams and aspirations we had for our children is now emptied, due to the poor ca-reer and relationship choices our adult children have made. Perhaps the bucket of hope we held for your own future when we were young has now rusted and sprung many leaks, as youth vanishes and the cares of old age de-scend on us. God alone can refill the various buckets of our hopes and dreams. Joy and hope come to us in the celebration of Eucharist and its reception. In Thanksgiving to God we are asked to support the work of the church in repairing the wounds of the buckets of our lives. In supporting the church we offer support to the many needy and wounded people who share our pews week and after week, who might appear to us to be bright and happy, and a success in every way. In the Offertory Enhancement Program we are observing this Lent, everyone is challenged to consider the weekly gift we should give to God and his church. Please con-sider what gift you could return to God every week, recog-nizing God’s goodness and blessings. The most helpful commitment is to sign-up for Auto-Share, so that your gift each week comes to the parish in an uninterrupted basis. Prayers and blessings to you as you respond to this invitation to refill the bucket of love and thanks to God with your weekly church offering.

—Father Bill Reynolds

KIDS AGAINST HUNGER

Another Kids Against Hunger packaging event has been scheduled for Saturday, April 12, at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 501 E. 19th St. N., Newton. Once again the packaged food will be for the purpose of feeding hungry (and starving) families in the world as well as in Iowa. Sa-cred Heart Church will again recruit a team if we find there is enough interest after the overwhelming response from parish members for the February event. The deadline for registering a team or individuals is April 4. Please contact Betty Knopf, (641) 792-5281, Greta Koppin, (641) 792-7118, or leave a message with the Parish Administrative As-sistant, Ann Ratliff, (641) 792-2050.

Marriage Moments & Parenting Pointers

Don't be a "male chauvinist bug." The male Zeus bug deserves such a name. He rides on the female bug who feeds him and mates with him on demand. Marriage partners may not always be able to give equally, but strive to exceed expecta-tions. This is not limited to the male species. Affirming your child for effort and accom-plishments is good; but don't mix your "Cs" (compliments with criticisms). "Honey, what a beautiful drawing you did. Next time try to be a little neater." The criticism cancels out the compli-ment.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In today’s first reading from the Book of Exodus, we hear of the hardships endured by the people of Israel on their wilderness journey out of Egypt. The wilderness is a demanding place for human life. Just trying to survive can seriously test our faith. In the Israelites’ journey away from a life of slavery and oppression, harsh condi-tions challenged their trust in the God who liberated them. But their transition brings them closer to God, and they are constantly reminded of the Lord’s gracious provision and nurturing. Good stewards believe the Lord’s presence transforms their own “wilderness” ex-periences into a place of divine mercy and nourishment. Reflect on your own “wilderness” experiences. How has God been present for you and nourished you in times of transition?

In The Catholic Messenger this week (March 20):

Full-color spread on Stations of the Cross; each of 14 stations photographed comes from a different parish in the Diocese of Davenport. Brief reflections accompany each station.

Seminarian Guillermo Trevino made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and reflects on that experi-

ence as he anticipates his ordination to the diaconate in three months. In our Lenten column series, Fr. Scott Lemaster reflects on the woman at the well’s encounter with the Lord, the Gospel story for the third Sunday of Lent. St. Mary of the Visitation, Ottumwa, hosted the March 16 celebration of The Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion of Candidates. About 20 catechists participated in a diocesan workshop on preparing adolescents for the sacrament of con-firmation and to be on fire to share their faith. Our Lady of Victory Parish, Davenport, hosted its 10th annual retreat for adults with disabilities. Parishioner Karen Kilburg led the retreat, assisted by dedicated volunteers. Features page: Leigh Germanis shares a story about the gift of intercessory prayer; Kathy Berken takes a look at Lectio Divina and its application in her daily life. Opinions Page: Fr. Ron Rolheiser explores the human struggle with sexual energy; Fr. Bud Grant explains how science can spur theological reflection. Social media impacts how some Catholics experience and observe Lent; learn what is popular with a growing number of Catholics. A priest who chose to live among the poor in one of Buenos Aires’s shanty towns sees growth in the life of the church because he’s working inside the barrio, not out of it. Thank you for your support. Please let us know of any stories, ideas or suggestions you’d like to share with The Catholic Messenger!

Son of God Movie Rating "Due to the intense and bloody portrayal of the Crucifixion, the scourging and several sequences of violence in the movie Son of God, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. The movie has a rating of PG-13 by the Motion Pic-ture Assoc. of America. Rather than simply sug-gesting parental discretion, the PG-13 rating car-ries the warning: “Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Chil-dren Under 13.”

dear Padre

Does it matter whether I go to Mass?

I know Mass is supposed to bring me closer to God, but I feel much closer to God when I take a walk along the beach. Wouldn’t God rather I do the thing that makes me feel closest to him?

The beach can calm the soul and lead to praise of God, but this is not the worship God asks of us. This worship, ever since the days of Moses and Phar-aoh, has been the keeping of a Sabbath Day in a gather-ing of a whole people, a community.

So in the Book of Exodus, God gives this mes-sage to Pharaoh: “Let my people go, that they may hold a feast for me in the wilderness” (5:1).

For Catholics, weekly Mass celebrates our deep-est nature and calling as the people of the God of the Bible. Worship is for God first of all and above all. Find this attitude in yourself, and you will find more in the Mass than you ever dreamed possible. You will find what every human heart is seeking: the Love we can give ourselves to, what Jesus teaches as the first and greatest commandment.

Jesus also teaches that the second greatest com-mandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. This is what we often find difficult about weekly Mass: all those people! But staying with them and praying with them, crying babies and all, is the worship God asks of your heart.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items in the library. Reverend Alex Jones was a Pentecos-tal Pastor who began to study the early Church Fathers and decided he had to make his Sunday services more liturgi-cal. What hap-pened is an in-credible story of faith and cour-age. Reverend Jones found the teaching of the Fathers and beauty of the liturgy based on a true understanding of Scripture meant the Catholic Church was the one true Church founded by Christ and where he belonged. See how not only Mr. Jones but most of his Protestant congrega-tion followed him into the Church on Easter Sunday 2001. You will not forget his story as he related it on the DVD No Price Too High The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

Ex 17:3–7 / Rom 5:1–2, 5–8 / Jn 4:5–42

The conventional wisdom of fitness experts and health professionals is that we should drink eight glasses of water a day. This suggestion is the product of a country with the luxury of clean, abundant, easily accessible water. Some of us are so used to processed water that we balk when we have to drink well water. Some people think bottled water is a necessity because, in their minds, it tastes better. It rarely hits home that in much of the world safe drinking water is scarce, if available at all. People who live in those areas have to make do with the little good water they have for drinking, cooking, and washing. In the desert regions of the Middle East, wells were a source of life and a social meeting place. Asking for water took a little courage in a place where water was rare. Offering someone water was a great gesture of hospi-tality. Jesus’ request invited the woman’s hospitality and led to so much more. She opened her life to Jesus; in turn, Jesus revealed who he was and the gift of life he brings.

Living water must have sounded like a dream to a woman with a stagnant well, and maybe it does to us as well, but we do know this: Those who drink eight glasses of water a day will eventually die as surely as those who fight for even one. On the other hand, Jesus promises that if we drink the water he gives, we will have eternal life—for he is Living Water itself. Have you had your glass today?
