She has touched the lives of so many and we are so
grateful that God lead her to minister in our midst.
We wish her much joy for her anniversary!

Questions of the Week
First Reading
What do you think Elisha's response to Elijah
tells us about his character?
Second Reading
Paul urges the Galatians to use their new-found
freedom in Christ "to serve one another through love."
What makes this moral imperative from Paul such a
challenge even today?
Gospel Reading
Today's reading is the opening scene to Luke's long
travel narrative - Jesus' final journey to Jerusalem
(Lk 9:51-19:44). Luke tells us that Jesus was resolute
(unyielding) in his journey. Why do you think Jesus
demanded unconditional following of him?
Wednesday Morning Bible Study
Please note that Wednesday morning
Bible Study will be on summer break
July 3 thru August 7.
Bible Study will resume on
Wednesday, August 14.
Silver Jubilee of Sister Teresa Gunter The Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, Indiana,
joyfully announce the
Silver Jubilee of Monastic Profession
of Sister Teresa Gunter.
A Eucharist Liturgy of Thanksgiving
will be celebrated in the
Monastery Immaculate Conception Church
Saturday, the sixth of July, 2019
at one p.m. Eastern Time.
A public reception will follow in the Event Center.
Summer Vacation Travels
Summer is here and so is the busiest travel season of
the year. When you are traveling this summer and

Discipleship: Serving Others in Christ’s Name Part Eight ~ By Joan Weber
Explore
Sometimes we Catholics forget that service is integral
to our Catholic identity. When we serve, we are saying
yes to our baptismal call to be disciples of Jesus in the
world. Yet we often over-focus on rules and
regulations, or on accumulating knowledge, while
neglecting to take action as part of our discipleship.
Today is a wonderful time to be Catholic. Pope Francis
has called on all Catholics to be Jesus in the world.
And both Scripture and our Church teachings echo
Jesus in proclaiming the importance of service to living
faithfully as disciples. Jesus’ entire ministry embodied
reaching out to those in need. But even as far back as
the Pentateuch, God invited us to have a preferential
option for the poor and vulnerable.
Service Learning
Service comes in many different shapes and sizes. It
can be an hour, a week, a year, or a lifetime. It might
involve helping an elderly person with gardening, or
helping build a Habitat home for someone who could
not otherwise afford one. It might be serving food to
the homeless at a shelter or volunteering to be a big
brother or big sister. It might be helping someone
learn to read. Or it could be distributing food and
clothing after a natural disaster.
A uniquely faithful way of doing service is becoming
more popular in the U.S. today. It is called service
learning, and it is a way of engaging people in service
while also weaving in Scripture and Catholic social
teaching. Teaching the principles of Catholic social
teaching and proclaiming the Word of God in the
context of a week of serving those in need can make all
the difference. Service learning helps those serving to
understand the why behind what they are doing and
makes what could be mundane work become more
meaningful. It is a great way to connect service to
saying yes to our baptismal call.
Conclusion
The key teachings of our Catholic faith about service
include:
God wants a just world in which everyone has
what he/she needs to live a life of dignity.
We are called to serve others, especially the most
vulnerable in our midst.
The Old Testament calls on us to have a
preferential option for the poor and vulnerable.
Jesus embodies service to others by the way he
served and by his teaching that what we do the
least of our brothers and sisters we do to him.
Our Catholic Church places service at the heart of
our faith, along with the Word of God and our
sacramental living.
Eucharist sends us out into the world to be Jesus
for others and to serve those in need.
Service is an integral element of discipleship.
Service learning makes the teaching of our Church
about justice and service come alive because
people are living what they are learning.
Apply
Reflect on what you’ve just read. Then answer the
following questions:
1. What did this background teach or remind you
about the Catholic view of service?
2. What is your personal way of living a life of
service? How can you share that with your
fellow parishioners?

Last Sunday, our Choir sang the beautiful
Eat this Bread hymn by Jacques Berthier at the 10:30 am
Mass. If you missed this Mass or would like to hear it

Do you have an extra 30 minutes a week?
Ever thought about visiting one of our many
parishioners in a Nursing Home? We have several
parishioners in Nursing Homes throughout the
Evansville area. Some of our parishioners don’t have
any family or friends to visit with them and would love
to see someone stop by, say hi, and bring them Holy
Communion.
This is a great ministry for everyone—young or old,
single or married, family or no family. A few minutes a
week for you and your family would mean so much for
one of our Nursing Home parishioners. If interested,
please contact Lisa in the Parish Office, 812-423-5209.

DIOCESAN/COMMUNITY EVENTS
TEC (Teens Encounter Christ)
TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) is a three-day experience
for young people who are searching for goals,
acceptance, meaning, and for community.
Adults are also welcome and encouraged to attend
as they increase our witness to our faith while
experiencing their own encounter with Christ.
Candidates can expect to meet others from all areas
of the Diocese, find how God fits in your life, and
encounter the Risen Jesus Christ. You will have time
to reflect on your life, ideas, hopes, and dreams away
from home, school, and/or work.
You can find an application and more information at
http://www.switec.org/
The next weekend is July 20-22, 2019 at St. Mary’s
Church in Ireland. Potential future retreat weekends
are scheduled for November 9-11, 2019 and February
2020. Feel free to send in applications for any of the
weekends, but please know that they may fill quickly,
so send in your application soon.
