Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Our series of catechesis on the Commandments brings us today to the Sixth Word, which addresses the sentimental and sexual dimension, and states: “You shall not commit adultery”. The immediate call is to fidelity, and indeed no human relationship is authentic without fidelity and loyalty.

One cannot love only as long as it is ‘convenient’; love is truly manifested beyond the threshold of one’s own personal advantage, when one gives unreservedly. As the Catechism states: “Love seeks to be definitive; it cannot be an arrangement ‘until further notice’” (n. 1646). Fidelity is an attribute of a free, mature and responsible human relationship. Friends, too, reveal themselves as authentic because they remain so in all circumstances, otherwise they are not friends. Christ reveals authentic love; the One who lives in the boundless love of the Father, is, on this strength, the faithful Friend who welcomes us even when we err, and who always wants good for us, even when we do not deserve it.

Human beings need to be loved unconditionally and those who do not receive this acceptance carry a certain incompleteness within themselves, often without knowing it. The human heart seeks to fill this void with surrogates, accepting compromises and mediocrity that have only a vague flavour of love. The risk is to call certain bitter and immature relationships ‘love’, with the illusion of finding the light of life in something that, at best, is merely a reflection of it.

Thus it can happen, for example, that one overestimates physical attraction, which is itself a gift from God, but aims to pave the way for an authentic and faithful relationship with the person. As Saint John Paul II used to say, the human being “is called to a full and mature spontaneity of relationships”, which is “the gradual fruit of discerning the impulses in one’s own heart”. It is something that is acquired, because every human being must “learn with determination and consistency what the body signifies” (cf. Catechesis, 12 November 1980).

Four Pillars of the Oratory

Charity

The Four Pillars of the Oratory: Charity

In the previous article, we began exploring the four “pillars” of Oratorian life: PRAYER, CHARITY, HUMILITY, and JOY. This week, we will focus on the second pillar, charity. For St. Philip, the exercise of charity was central to his discipleship of Jesus. His first apostolate was of charity and service. In particular, he developed a long association with the San Giacomo hospital, where the incurable and the destitute languished in squalor and loneliness. St. Philip, his friends and his penitents would care for their physical and spiritual needs. For the Holy Year of 1550, he helped to organize the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity, which ministered to the pilgrims who came to Rome for the jubilee. Throughout his adult life, St. Philip cared for the abandoned and the poor, and defended the marginalized and the persecuted. There are many stories attesting to his personal acts of charity towards widows, orphans, and prisoners. Above all, for St. Philip, and for all Oratorians, charity means putting the Word into action, living the faith we profess. Loving people involves speaking about God and sharing the Gospel, and it also includes demonstrating God’s generous love through acts of practical charity. These are two sides of the same coin, and both are indispensable. Experiencing the suffering of others as our own, and assisting them without regard for our own comfort, as St. Philip did, becomes a powerful testimony of faith in action. Within the Oratory, the exercise of fraternal charity brings serenity to the life of the community and fosters solidarity among its members. The mutual encouragement, exercise of mercy, and fraternal correction offered one to another, builds up the whole community. This charity, when lived well, serves as an inspiration to others and attracts others to the Oratorian life. It echoes the life of the early Christian community which so inspired St. Philip. Next week, we will turn our attention to humility, the third pillar of Oratorian life. Note: This article is part of our ongoing series on St. Philip Neri

and the Oratory. Please direct any questions or comments to Fr.

As Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives! He calls some to marriage, some to the priesthood, and others to religious life. Some remain as generous single people. Fully living our own vocations—and teaching young people how to discern God’s call—is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. This past week was National Vocation Awareness Week. Please pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life—children, grandchildren, students, and friends—to be open if God calls them to priesthood or consecrated life.

The Main Catholic Vocations: A vocation is a call from God to pursue holiness in a specific way, involving a public and permanent commitment. Marriage: Most people are called to marriage—a vowed union of a man and woman who promise to love their spouses and to joyfully welcome children. Priesthood: Priests bring Jesus to people and people to Jesus through preaching and the sacraments. They are ordained to devote their lives to serve the people of God. Consecrated Life: Both men and women make vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience when they join orders such as the Franciscans, Benedictines, Dominicans, etc.

St. Ann Parish Music Corner

This weekend, we hear the story of the poor widow who gave the last that she had to the Temple as a sacrifice to God. While Jesus was grateful for her sacrifice, he did not return her sacrifice back to her. We must think about how we are sacrificing for God. Are we truly giving all that we have for His glory? Are we truly loving Him with all of our heart, mind, spirit, and strength? As the choir sings Shepherd Me, O God, let us reflect on how we can live, serve, and pray "beyond our wants, beyond our fears."
