Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ November 19, 2017

Open the Doors of My Heart A PRAYER FOR THE WORLD DAY OF THE POOR “As long as Lazarus lies at the door of our homes (cf. Luke 16:19–21), there can be no justice or social peace.” –Pope Francis

God of Abraham,

On my television, On my newsfeed, On my street, Everywhere I go, I see Lazarus. But I also see so many doors, Doors that I’ve built, That I’ve closed. Doors that society has hung and locked.

Doors that separate me from Lazarus. Lord, teach me to open the door to Lazarus, To the poor.

To know them as your children, To lift them in their distress, To work to help them find a fair share of your bounty. This World Day of the Poor, Help us all turn to those outside our

door— To bless, heal, comfort; And together, from this day forward, build a world Where the poor are strangers to none, And, indeed, the very chains of poverty are broken.

Amen

Wise and foolish investments, banks, even interest rates—today’s parable permits no escape from life in the real world or from the fact that it will one day end. Those planning to be ready for the Lord’s return can’t just hang around waiting. Again, today’s Old Testa-ment illumines the Gospel. Proverbs’ worthy wife is praised neither for good looks nor gracious manners, but for her industry, skill, conscientious development of God-given gifts, and generosity in serving others with them. The contrast with the parable’s cautious servant could hardly be more striking. Thus, Proverbs’ wife confirms the first two servants’ resourcefulness in developing their “talents.” Note that while “talent” in Proverbs means what we mean by the word, Matthew’s “talent” refers to an astronomical sum of money, equivalent to twenty years’ wages! Today, when so much hard-earned, care-fully invested money has evaporated, our true wealth is more clearly defined by Proverbs’ “talents:” our abilities, natural or acquired, skills studiously perfected, generously shared. Lest we, like the lazy servant, think our Master too demanding, note that there is no mention of the Master taking back the sum entrusted to the first two servants or the profit they made with it. Rather, the cautious servant’s fate serves to jolt us out of the “peace and security” complacency Paul warns against (1 Thessalonians 5:3). Rather than caution, the Christian community and individual disciples must undertake creative, even daring initiatives for the Kingdom, take a chance on the wealth the Master has invested in us, and encourage others to do the same. REFLECION DOMINICAL

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION We may long to hear the Lord say to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” as He does with the first two servants mentioned in the Parable of the Talents in today’s Gospel from Matthew. However, although the third servant did not squander or waste the gifts (talents) he had received, the Master’s reaction was not the same.

As we have often stated, stewardship is an active way of life. There is nothing passive about it. The Lord expects us to do things, to take the gifts we receive and to share them and multiply them, as was the case in the first two servants cited in the parable.

If we really wish to hear the Lord say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” to us when we are finally judged, we need to do something to earn that praise. The key word in that sentence is “do.” There is nothing spiritual or abstract about being ready for Jesus’ return and judgment of us. God has gifted us in a multitude of ways. We need to recognize those gifts; acknowledge those gifts; be grateful for those gifts; and most of all use those gifts to benefit the Church and others.

What have we done with our time, our money, and our abilities? In our Church we recognize and point to sins of omission — that is, things we did not do, but should have. Like the first two servants in the parable, it is not just a case of preserving what God has given us, it is a case of using it, increasing it, and returning it to the Lord.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
