Domestic woes continue THE number of Aussies intendingto take domestic holidays remainsat historic low levels, accordingto the latest Roy Morgan Researchreport on holiday travel intention. 56% of those surveyed for the12 month period to Feb 2011 saidthey planned to take a holidaywithin Australia, which is thesame low level as Feb last year. And the figure for Australiansintending to take an internationalholiday in the next year reachedits highest level in half a decade, now at 10%. That’s 1% up on the same timein 2010, and continues a longterm trend, up from 6% in 2006. Just 4% said they wereundecided on any holiday travel. “The appeal of an overseasholiday is growing among

Australians, and with the strongAustralian dollar there is nobetter time to go,” said RMR Int’lDirector of Tourism, Travel &Leisure, Jane Ianniello. “By contrast domestic holidaysare declining in appeal whilebecoming relatively expensive,”she added. MEANWHILE the report alsoshowed the strong influence ofthe internet on the holidayselection process, with 68% of so-called ‘Holiday Intenders’planning to research theirinternational trips online -compared to a figure of just 11%for newspapers. Magazines, the Yellow Pages, catalogues, television and radioall rated at 5% or less in the study Media sources for domesticholiday intenders rated similarly. “Domestic destinationmarketers have a difficult taskahead of them trying to win ashare of a shrinking pie, and needto exploit the heavy reliance oftourists on the internet as bothan information source andbooking method,” Ianniello said.

THERE’S mixed feeling in Samoaabout a plan to switch the Pacificnation to the other side of theinternational date line (TD Thu). Some tourism operators havedecried the move, saying it willremove the unique attraction ofSamoan sunsets being the lastin each daily rotation of the earth. But others see opportunity inthe change, which will meanthat Samoa has a different dateto nearby American Samoa. This means “you can have twobirthdays, two weddings andtwo wedding anniversaries onthe same date - on separatedays,” said Samoan primeminister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai.

China Southern set for Perth flights THE West AustralianGovernment has confirmed a newagreement with China SouthernAirlines which paves the way forthe carrier to launch non stopservices to Perth. WA tourism minister KimHames and Tourism WA ceoStephanie Buckland visitedGuangzhou for the signingceremony, which also includedPerth Airport ceo Brad Geatchesand CZ chief Tan Wan Geng. “Gaining direct air access to themassive Chinese tourism marketis a top priority of the StateGovernment and Tourism WA,”said Hames. As well as boosting tourism, adirect flight connection to Chinawould help build the alreadystrong trade links between China

and Western Australia, he added. With WA contributing about70% of Australia’s exports toChina, Perth is already a highyield route for the country, with33% of traffic business related. However currently WesternAustralia only attracts 3% ofChinese visitors to Australia “andthe government and Tourism WAwant to rectify that andsignificantly increase our share ofthe Chinese market,” Hames said. MEANWHILE China Southern -already one of the biggest airlinesin the world - looks to be set forfurther growth with the carrierplacing an order for six newBoeing 787s for its XiamenAirlines subsidiary. The still to be finalised order isworth around US$1.1 billion.

So far, the versions that have been released have been well received bymembers and we have several messages into AFTA showing howmembers have used them. As a part of the ongoing awarenesscampaign, AFTA has continued its public relations plan and over thecoming weeks/month I expect that editors of consumer publications willbe running more positive stories about travel agents. You can requestcopies of the new version from the afta.com.au website.

In keeping with the theme of agency awareness, I am also pleased tohear that many of the negative advertisements by online sellers of travelinsurance have changed. In fact, one particular supplier has changed thelanguage to: “compare our price with your travel agent”. If you ask me thisis fantastic news for travel agents as it gives you the opportunity toexplore and explain why your product is better and at least compete forthe client’s insurance business.

This change did not come quickly or easily as it required gettingregulators involved. The good news is that the change has come aboutand for the time being, we have a level playing field in terms of theadvertising of travel insurance by online sellers.

This week will also have the federal budget handed down and given thenumber of leaks, stories, advance information and generally other factsalready out in the market place, I will be surprised if there are any bignews items that could be left.

For the travel industry there will be no specifically good news. What isclear if that we should see the exchange rate staying high for the next 6months or so, but we may also see an increase in interest rates, and forthose in leisure travel, this may propose an issue as consumerspull back on spending? No matter what the finalannouncements are today, there are clear signals thatthe economy may be in for a bit of a bumpy ride over thecoming months. I guess we have to all just buckle in andgo along for the ride.

Worldhotels in Macau THE new 1500-room GalaxyHotel in Macau will be part of theWorldhotels network when itofficially opens next week. The property is the “signaturehotel” of Galaxy Macau, theenclave’s newest five starintegrated destination resort.

QF adds J workspace QANTAS is believed to be addinga semi-permanent ‘workspace’across the middle seat of itsrecently re-configured BusinessClass domestic A330-200 cabin. Earlier this year, online airlineblogs flagged that Qantas hadreconfigured two of its A330swith a 2-3-2 configuration. But the cabin set-up has nowbeen reduced to 36 J class seats, with the middle seat in the centreblock of three understood to havea workstation created.
