The Compensating System
In 1874 D.J. Blaikley, a well-known name in brass instrument design, developed a system of automatic compensating pistons built into the existing valves which operate when the valves are used in combination.
An extra piece of tube (A) is attached to the side of the first valve. When the first or fourth valves are used separately the extra piece of tubing is not required; but as soon as the first and fourth are combined, this extra knuckle of tubing is thrown in automatically. A short length of tubing (B) is attached to the second valve, with corresponding tubes in the pistons, and works on the same principle.
