This Joyful Eastertide Saturday 18 May 2019, 3.00pm
_______________________________________________________
For two millennia, the church has gathered throughout the week leading into Easter
Sunday (Holy Week) and it is no surprise that music has come to play a large role in
the celebration of the events of that week. At the heart of this time is the remembrance
(the making real once again in this time) of one of the most profound events in human
history: Christ’s crucifixion, death and resurrection. This concert takes us on a journey
through this remarkable time, reflecting on the significant events of that week and
celebrating with all the world This Joyful Eastertide…

The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle
Christ Church Cathedral maintains a music programme that has benefitted this city
for nearly 200 years – the first record of music at the Cathedral dating back to 1835
when a finger and barrel organ was in use. During that time, the choirs, organists
and musicians have enhanced the worship of our church, diocese and city, and
provided entertainment on the concert platform in one of Australia’s finest and
most historic buildings.
The full and active music programme includes two choirs, Christ Church Camerata,
a concert series and Friends of Newcastle Cathedral Music. The Cathedral
Choir forms the basis of the choral programme. Their repertoire spans ancient
plainsong to the present day, and includes a number of anthems, canticles and
settings by local composers. In addition to this, the choir regularly sings major
settings by Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria, Haydn, Schubert, Mozart, Widor and Vierne,
as well as the “traditional” English repertoire of Darke, Sumsion, Stanford, Howells
and others.
Peter Guy, Organist and Masters of Choristers
Peter Guy is Organist and Master of the Choristers at Christ Church Cathedral,
Newcastle. An honours graduate and University Medallist of the University of
Newcastle (where he studied pipe organ and conducting with Dr Philip Matthias),
Peter has a strong association with the musical life of Newcastle. Prior to this,
Peter was Director of Music at St Stephen’s Uniting Church, Macquarie St, and
St Andrew’s College within the University of Sydney.
4
Peter was a national keyboard finalist in the Symphony Australia Young Performer’s
Award in 2003, performing with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. He has
undertaken international tours with the University of Newcastle Chamber Choir,
has performed as part of the national conferences of the Organ Historical Society
in the United States, and in 2016 directed the inaugural international tour of Christ
Church Cathedral Choir. Peter has recorded two solo organ compilations, directed
Christ Church Cathedral Choir in recording and enjoys an active recital schedule
around Australia.

An order of Choral Evensong
Saturday 18 May 2019 Officiant: The Right Reverend Richard Hurford OAM KStJ
The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Newcastle
Mr Peter Guy, Director
Mr Callum Close, Organist
Please stand as the choir and clergy enter the church, then remain standing while
the officiant and choir sing the responses.
O: O Lord, open thou our lips:
And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
O: O God, make speed to save us:
O Lord, make hast to help us.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen. Praise ye the Lord.
Music: William Smith of Durham (1603 – 1645)
Please sit as the choir sings the Psalm, standing for the Gloria:
1. O clap your hands together, all ye people:
O sing unto God with the voice of melody.
2. For the Lord is high, and to be feared:
he is the great King upon all the earth.
3. He shall subdue the people under us:
and the nations under our feet.
4. He shall choose out an heritage for us:
even the worship of Jacob, whom he loved.
5. God is gone up with a merry noise:
and the Lord with the sound of the trump.
6
6. O sing praises, sing praises unto our God:
O sing praises, sing praises unto our King.
7. For God is the King of all the earth:
sing ye praises with understanding.
8. God reigneth over the heathen:
God sitteth upon his holy seat.
9. The princes of the people are joined unto the people of the God of Abraham:
for God, which is very high exalted, doth defend the earth, as it were with
a shield.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
Please be seated for the first lesson, read by Paula Turner.
Joshua 24: 16 – 33
The first lesson is taken from the book of Joshua, Chapter 24, beginning at the
sixteenth verse.
Then the people answered, ‘Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to
serve other gods; for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up
from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs
in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the
peoples through whom we passed; and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples,
the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is
our God.’
But Joshua said to the people, ‘You cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He
is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake
the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume
you, after having done you good.’ And the people said to Joshua, ‘No, we will serve
the Lord!’ Then Joshua said to the people, ‘You are witnesses against yourselves
that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.’ And they said, ‘We are witnesses.’
He said, ‘Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your
hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.’ The people said to Joshua, ‘The Lord our God
we will serve, and him we will obey.’ So Joshua made a covenant with the people
that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.
7
Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large
stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the Lord. Joshua said
to all the people, ‘See, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all
the words of the Lord that he spoke to us; therefore it shall be a witness against
you, if you deal falsely with your God.’ So Joshua sent the people away to their
inheritances.
After these things Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being
one hundred and ten years old. They buried him in his own inheritance at
Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who
outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel.
The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried
at Shechem, in the portion of ground that Jacob had bought from the children of
Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of money; it became an
inheritance of the descendants of Joseph. Eleazar son of Aaron died; and they
buried him at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which had been given him in
the hill country of Ephraim.
Here ends the first lesson.
Please stand for the Office Hymn
That Eastertide with joy was bright,
the sun shone out with fairer light,
alleluia, alleluia!
when to their longing eyes restored
the apostles saw their risen Lord.
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
alleluia, alleluia!
He showed to them his hands, his side,
where yet the glorious wounds abide:
alleluia, alleluia!
the tokens true which made it plain
their Lord indeed was risen again.
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
alleluia, alleluia!
8
Jesus, the king of gentleness,
come now yourself our hearts possess,
alleluia, alleluia!
That we may give you all our days
The tribute of our grateful praise
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
alleluia, alleluia!
Anon. Latin Christ. 7th cent.
Tr. John Mason Neale 1818-66 alt.
Tune: Lasst Uns Erfreuen
Please remain standing while the choir sings the Magnificat.
Music: Charles Villiers Stanford – Evening Service in C Major
My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his hand-maiden.
For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the
imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble
and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our
forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
Please be seated for the second lesson, read by Naomi Johnson.
Acts 12: 1 – 17a
The second lesson is taken from the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 12,
beginning at the first verse.
About that time, King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the
church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw
that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the
festival of Unleavened Bread.) When he had seized him, he put him in prison and
9
handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him
out to the people after the Passover.
While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him.
The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two
chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were
keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a
light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get
up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him, “Fasten
your belt and put on your sandals.” He did so. Then he said to him, “Wrap your
cloak around you and follow me.”
Peter went out and followed him; he did not realise that what was happening with
the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. After they had
passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into
the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked
along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and
said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the
hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”
As soon as he realised this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John
whose other name was Mark, where many had gathered and were praying.
When he knocked at the outer gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer. On
recognizing Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that, instead of opening the gate,
she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate. They said to her,
“You are out of your mind!” But she insisted that it was so. They said, “It is his
angel.” Meanwhile Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the gate,
they saw him and were amazed. He motioned to them with his hand to be silent,
and described for them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison.
Here ends the second lesson.
Please stand while the choir sings the Nunc Dimittis
Music: Charles Villers Stanford – Evening Service in C Major
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation;
Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
10
Please remain standing while we say the Apostles Creed
I believe in God,
Maker of Heaven and Earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost:
The holy catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The forgiveness of sins;
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.
Amen.
The choir sings the responses:
O: The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
Please kneel or sit.
Lord, have mercy upon us: Christ, have mercy upon us: Lord, have mercy upon us.
O: Our Father,
which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Amen.
11
O: O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us:
And grant us thy salvation.
O: O Lord, save the Queen:
And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
O: Endue thy Ministers with righteousness:
And make thy chosen people joyful.
O: O Lord, save thy people:
And bless thine inheritance
O: Give peace in our time, O Lord:
Because there is none other that fighteth for us,
but only thou, O God.
O: O God, make clean our hearts within us:
And take not thy holy spirit from us.
Collect of the Day
O Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful
men;
Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and
desire that which thou dost promise;
that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may
surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Second Collect at Evening Prayer
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do pro-
ceed:
Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give;
that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments,
and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies
may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen.
The Third Collect, for Aid against all Perils
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord;
and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
12
Following the three collects, please be seated as the choir sings the anthem.
Now the green blade rises
Music: Traditional French, arr. Peter Guy (b. 1981)
Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,
Wheat that in the dark earth many days has lain:
love lives again, that with the dead has been:
Love has come again, like wheat that spring up green.
In the grave they laid hem, love whom hate had slain,
thinking that he never would awake again,
laid in the earth, like grain that sleeps unseen:
Love has come again …
Up he sprang at Easter, like the risen grain,
he who for the three days, in the grave had lain,
raised from the dead my living Lord is seen:
Love has come again …
When our hearts are wintry, grieving or in pain,
then your touch can call us back to life again:
fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
Love has come again …
Please kneel or sit as prayers are offered for the world, the church, and those
in need, read by Jocelyn Chey
A Prayer for the Queen's Majesty
O LORD, our heavenly Father, high and mighty, King of kings, Lord of
lords, the only Ruler of princes, who dost from thy throne behold all the
dwellers upon earth: Most heartily we beseech thee with thy favour to behold
our most gracious Sovereign Lady, Queen ELIZABETH; and so replenish her
with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that she may always incline to thy will, and
walk in thy way. Endue her plenteously with heavenly gifts; grant her in
health and wealth long to live; strengthen her that she may vanquish and
overcome all her enemies; and finally after this life she may attain everlasting
joy and felicity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
13
A Prayer for Australia
ALMIGHTY God, the fountain of all goodness, we humbly beseech thee to
bless the people of Australia: Guide our national elections; endue our elected leaders
with thy Holy Spirit; unite us in love and harmony; prosper us all with happiness;
and bring us to thine everlasting kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for the Clergy and People
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send down
upon our Bishops, and Curates, and all Congregations committed to their charge, the
healthful Spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the
continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate
and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Prayer for the Poor and the Neglected
Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before thee all those who are poor
and neglected and those whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and
the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to
heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant
this, Father, for the love of thy Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for Rain
O God, heavenly Father, who by thy Son Jesus Christ hast promised to all those who
seek thy kingdom and its righteousness all things necessary to sustain their life: send
us, we entreat thee, in this time of need, such moderate rain and showers, that we
may receive the fruits of the earth, to our comfort and to thy honour; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom.
ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make
our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are
gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord,
the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them;
granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life
everlasting. Amen.
At the conclusion of the prayers, we say together:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost,
be with us all evermore. Amen.
14
Please stand for the Dismissal Hymn
Yours be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory over death you’ve won;
angels in bright rainment rolled the stone away,
kept the folded grave-clothes, where your body lay.
Yours be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory over death you’ve won.
See, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;
lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom;
let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing,
for the Lord is living, death has lost its sting.
Yours be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory over death you’ve won.
No more we doubt you, glorious Prince of life;
life is naught without you: aid us in our strife;
make us more than conquerors through your deathless love;
bring us safe through Jordan to your home above.
Yours be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory over death you’ve won.
Words: Edmund Louise Budry 1854 – 1932
tr. Richard Birch Hyle 1875 – 1939 alt.
Tune: Maccabeus
15
Please remain standing for the blessing
For all whom we love and value,
for every friend and connection,
we equally pray;
however divided and far asunder,
we know that we are alike before thee,
and under thine eye.
May we be equally united in thy faith and fear,
in fervent devotion towards thee,
and in thy merciful protection this night;
and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you this night and for evermore.
Amen.
Please remain standing as the choir and clergy process from the church.
