Race reports/Upcoming race information

Intercare Classic Road Race – Gustav BrinkBefore I get to the race report, I have to relate what happened after Saturday’s race. A few other athletes and I were waiting for the 10 km prize giving. I asked the announcer when it would be, and he indicated that he did not know, as he had not yet received the full set of results from the referees. After some further discussion between the waiting athletes, I volunteered to go and ask the referees. This was simply to get an indication as to how long we would still have to wait and for no other reason.

When I got to the finishing shute, I saw one of the organisers, whom I have known for more than 30 years. I asked him about the prize giving and was flabbergasted when he absolutely tore into me regarding my race reports, accusing me of costing organisers their sponsors. I was really taken aback by this, and quite frankly, I don’t understand how a single person’s comments would or could lead to a sponsor withdrawing. However, it did drive home the fact that what is said in public may have unintended consequences. It is therefore extremely important to reiterate the basis on which I judge races, which I believe is very objective – from a walker’s perspective. I do not give a runner’s perspective, as this would be completely different. A runner could not care less whether there was a separate start for walkers, separate results for walkers or prize money for walkers, whereas these things are rather important for walkers and carry a significant weight (30%) in my evaluation. Several other athletes, both walkers and runners, have previously commented on my race report format and have all expressed support thereof. However, as a concession I will also indicate the apparent total points from a runner’s perspective, i.e. excluding separate start/prize money/results for walkers, as that would be the majority of athletes’ view and will not make something look bad for a sponsor.

Therefore, before the race report, let me recap (since it is my first report for the year) on the factors I take into consideration:I judge all races that I participate in on the basis of specific criteria (which are more objective) and not only on how I personally felt on the day (which is highly subjective). Since I am a walker (although I do plan to run a few races this year), I will view this from a walker’s perspective. This would mean, for instance, that I will find a route was not good, as walkers were forced to break stride and rather “power walk” than “race walk” where hills (whether up or down) were too steep,

3

yet it could be a perfect race for running. Thus, for instance, I would definitely not like to walk the Sunrise Monster, although I enjoyed the race in my running days.

So, what will be my criteria? Bearing in mind that walkers and runners are technically in different competitions, I would like to see that actually happening. For that reason, whether walkers have a separate start will be important. It can be as little as 5 minutes. However, a separate start allows one to see who the other walkers are and what distances they are doing. In a field of 5,000 runners, you are bound to miss a few walkers if you don’t have a separate start. It would also stop some walkers from blatantly running in the first few hundred metres when they know they are unlikely to be spotted (unfortunately, this does happen).

Second, considering the size of most races these days, whether you have a separate start for the 10 and 21 (or 10/32, etc.), is important. If you have 2,000 athletes in each of the 10 and the 21 and they start together, you are asking for chaos. If it is a small field, I will disregard this criterion.Third, are there separate results for race walkers? Walkers are technically in a different race and if their results are not captured separately, their times are not taken into consideration for selecting teams, qualifying for colours, etc. It also means that you have no idea who your competitors were or where they finished, so this is really important.

Fourth, is there separate prize money for walkers? I am not asking for the same prize money as for runners (although that would be nice!), nor even for the same number of prizes, but perhaps top 3 and the winner only in each age category. This will certainly lead to more competition amongst the walkers, leading to improved standards.

Fifth, the start. Two things are important here: do people fill up from the back or the front? And how soon after the start do you have sharp turns (which causes additional congestion).

Sixth, the route. Is it suitable for walkers? This includes whether there are major uphill’s or downhills (downhills are sometimes worse for a walker’s style than uphill’s). How much traffic is there on the route?Seventh, marshalling. Good marshalling makes a huge difference.

Eighth, water points. I very often do not use the water points, but the availability of cold water and Coke is not the only issue. Sometimes some water points just give you a lot of positive energy with the vibe they have: friendly, music, etc. Another issue is whether you have sufficient helpers at each water point. Last year there were some races with well over 2,000 athletes, but only 3 helpers at a water point, which resulted in athletes having to stop and actually pour their own Coke.

Ninth, the venue. Access to the venue (e.g. single entrance) and the availability of parking.

Finally, the subjective issues. How did I feel, what was the weather like, was there a T-shirt or a nice medal? Did I enjoy nice rivalry with another walker (or even runner), or did another athlete support me along the way? Generally, I would let each criterion count 5 points, for a total mark of 50. However, sometimes there may be a specific aspect that is so important or outstanding, or something not relevant (e.g. if there is only a single distance), that I may re-allocate some marks.

So now, on the basis of these criteria, let’s have a look last Saturday’s race.

Race Report: Intercare Classic Road Race 10 km (2 February 2019)Separate start for walkers? No. Unlike many races, the walkers also did not stand together at the start, so I really had absolutely no idea who was in the field. I knew JJ Appel was ahead of me, as I saw him during his warm-up and then kept an eye out for him, but I was quite surprised at the end to find out I was second overall. A separate start would have made a huge difference. (0/5)Separate start for 10/21.1? Yes. This made a huge difference, as the two races were both quite big. I had no problem with jostling at all, despite the right turn quite short after the start. (5/5)Prize money for walkers: Yes, but only for the first two overall. Nothing for third overall, nor for any age categories. Not good enough (2/5)Separate results for walkers: No. There was nothing on the entry to distinguish runners and walkers and no separate shute. Accordingly, there is no ways of knowing how many walkers there were or what their times were. (0/5)Start: With the split start, the start was not nearly as congested as I thought it would be. Even though I was stading on the little hill inside the park watching the 21 start and then kept chatting to

some friends, with the result that I only moved to the starting area a few minutes before the actual start, it was no problem getting close to the front. Personally, I do not like standing in one place and then being led forward just before the start of the race, as thuis often leads to a lot of jostling, but this did not cause any problems this time round as it was well managed. In fact, the organisers walking with the bunting kept keeping the athletes in check. In addition, everybody had to fill from the back. (5/5)Route: Generally speaking, an excellent route for walkers (although I was not fit enough!). The climb up Stanza Bopape was not such as to cause you to break stride, nor was the downhill in Gordon. As early as we were, traffic was also not a problem. The only problem was that the distance markers were not always correctly placed. I would not mind being able to walk a 4:40 km for my last km (or any km for that matter). A good walking route. (3.5/5) Marshaling: Sufficient marshals in attendance, and certainly at all the main crossings. 4/5)Water points: I did not make use of the water points, because I seldom do on a 10 km. However, from what I saw there were more than enough helpers and certainly enough refreshments. The first water point also had a music system up and running and there was a good vibe at that water point. (4.5/5) Access and parking: There were really more than sufficient and safe parking, and little mud despite quite a lot of rain in the week leading up to the race. Good (4/5)Personal experience/value for money: When I got to 9 km and saw my time I was really downhearted, as I thought I was in line for a time of 62:30, but a good last km would only get my slightly under 64:00, so I was quite surprised when I came in on 62:27. While elated about my final time, I was quite dejected after 9 km. While in Stanza Bopape we had at least 4 ambulances racing past, lights flashing and sirens blaring, and I was rather concerned that somebody had crashed into the runners, but I never saw anything along the way, so that was a huge relief. The weather was fantastic for running and walking and I don’t think the organisers could have ordered it better. Since I only came back from overseas on Friday night, I did not have an opportunity to pre-enter and I found R110 for a 10 km exorbitant. In fact, it was more than the prize money for second overall walker! Thus, while the race experience was excellent, the value for money was not quite as good. To put it into perspective, the entry fee for next weekend’s 32 km is only R150, which means you pay R40 extra for 22 km extra. (3.5/5)Total: 35/50 (63%) (from a runner’s perspective, probably around 29.5/35 or around 84%)

Race report feedback Intercare Classic Rietondale Park, 2 February 2019, 10 km (Elbert Loubser):

Overheard on Radio FM 104.2 (was in Afrikaans): Colloquially boiled down to the following: 'January 2019 was a rather lengthy month, it had 89 days. In contrast, February 2019 had just started, and it was already Friday!' :-)

Arrived early morning, the stars and moon shining. Rather sparse cloud cover, so one could expect a rather warm day. Gradually the Rietondale Park 'camp' awakens. The audible, familiar 'clink-clink-clunk' emanating from Chad's coffee trailer, pre-announced the coffee bean aroma which started to waft through the air.

A certain club member quips (yes, there is that 'quip' word again) that 'my people will talk to your people' as regards to 'the invasion of privacy'. :-)

The half marathon started at 06:00 from right under the light blue 'blow up' arch in Nuffield Street. Several minutes later the 10 kay participants were gradually moved a number of meters closer towards Soutpansberg Road, in preparation for the 06:20 starting time.

The initial 7.5 kays (approximately) of the route is shared by the half-marathon and 10 kay races. Both races were single lappers. The elevation chart (see further below), reflects that a maximum height of 1393 meters was reached during the race(s) at the 4.8 km mark (start at 1312 meters). Hmmm, no wonder Jean Nepgen (Kowie Striders, Port Alfred, Eastern Cape) was not impressed when I shared with him that there was a looooong gradual climb which awaited us (Stanza Bopape Climb 1.8 km), before 'things' would improve.

https://www.strava.com/routes/16708520

The good news was that it had become totally overcast, so we were blessed with ample cloud protection during the greater part of the morning.

A right into Soutpansberg Road, left into Hamilton Street (not to be confused with Hamilton Avenue), left into Madiba street, the latter brought us to the first watering point at the foot of the Union Building grounds. A left into that testing ascent up Stanza Bopape. Then the enjoyable flow down Stanza Bopape, left into Jan Shoba Street, which brought us to watering point number 2. Yip, the worst was done. :-) Only 'flats' and 'downs' the rest of the way on the 10-kay race towards Soutpansberg Road and back to the Southern entrance to the Finish.

Thank you, Magnolia, for a well organised race. Thank you, Hennie, for setting up the Agape gazebo(s) base station. Securing a prime spot adjacent to the Finishing lanes. Thank you, Hennie, and Marix for the 'chippies' and coffee/tea.

Training/Health snippets

Treatment of Common Running InjuriesMost running injuries can be relieved by following these treatment strategies. If pain and discomfort continue, see your health care provider. You may need more advanced treatment to resolve your running injury.

Rest: Take it easy. If you keep running, your injury may get worse. Choose alternative ways to exer-cise while you heal, such as swimming or cycling.

Ice and cold therapy: Apply ice packs to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling.

Compression: Wrap the affected area with tape and use splints and supports to control swelling and stabilize the affected area.

Elevate: If you sprain your ankle or hurt your foot, elevate it to reduce swelling.

Stretch: To reduce pain and tension of the affected area, gently stretch and massage the injured area.

Pain relievers: Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or anti-in-flammatory medications, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve), as recommended by your health care provider to relieve pain and inflammation.

Don't try to push through pain. If you notice discomfort, take a break from running. If the pain con-tinues, seek care from your health care provider.

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for?” The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of six weeks vacation fully paid, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 40% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Of course, but you started it.”

Something to ponder over / something spiritual
