The Week at St Joseph High School
Special Olympics FlameThe 2011 Special Olympic Torch made its way past St Joe’s this Friday, with students Carmine Corica, Kevin Veeley, Steve D’Asconio, Max DeBroff and Brian Reilly joining with over 1,500 Law Enforcement officers and Special Olympics Athletes from across the State in Trumbull’s leg of the Torch tour. This year’s run covered over 530 miles and more than 100 cities and towns. The fundraising efforts helped raise thousands of dollars for the Special Olympics, Connecticut.
Wishing you Ubiquitous and Interrelated SerendipityA one-eyed cat for Poe’s Black Cat, a pink pig for Sinclair’s The Jungle: these were two of the literary allusions that periods B and E Honors American Lit cut into during a farewell to
Mrs Green. The “Allusion Cake,” itself a masterpiece, was made by Janina Kotulich ‘13, with the literary nods conjured by all affected students. Seventy plus--family, friends, and colleagues--gathered at the Alumni House on Sunday to wish Mrs Green well on her next chapter in her life-long adventure tale. She is pictured here with husband, George Green, himself now enshrined in the CT Volleyball Hall of Fame. You can leave a thoughtful message for Mrs Green on Facebook: Rita Green is Retiring.
Father’s Day is Around the Corner...so don’t forget the Breakfast of Champions from 10am-1pm next Sunday. All proceeds benefit SJ Athletics. If you haven’t already, make sure to book your place--and dad’s. Click below to download the reservation form:
Lacrosse Wins! The boys lacrosse team took the 2011 CIAC Class S
State Championship with a win over #3 seed Joel Barlow, 6-5, on Saturday. Brian Bacarella ‘12 scored the decisive goal with under five minutes to play in the final period, while goalie Matt Mohr ‘11 made the score stand up with a save in the game’s final moments. This is only the second time in state history that a high school has won a state title in all three seasons. Congrats to all!
Mass of Thanksgiving. St Joe’s wishes to congratulate two individuals who were ordained permanent deacons Saturday. Mr John Piatik, husband of Mrs Piatik, and Mr Patrick Toole, father of Sabrina ‘14. They were ordained by Bishop Lori at St Theresa’s Church in Trumbull. Mr Piatik is assigned to St James in Stratford; Mr Toole to St Thomas Aquinas in Fairfield. We informed both that they are similarly assigned to St Joseph High School. Pax et bono.
New Diocesan Director of Youth Ministry Bishop Lori informed us that Sr Florencia has been appointed Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese. As the Director of Youth Ministry, Sr Flo will be able to serve all of the youth in Fairfield County. Sister assures us she will “miss the school very, very much--especially the students.” Sister has been at St Joe’s for six years. Sr “Gabby” Davila of the Marian Community of Reconciliation, pictured here with Sr Florencia, will be the new Director of Campus Ministry.
Skate ’n Shoot for the South. St Joseph’s Hockey players have been busy, even in the off season. Following on the success of last year’s “Skate ’n Shoot for the South” fund raiser for Haiti, SJ students organized the event again this year to help those farther afield in need. Players Sean Blaine, Matt Greenhut, Patrick Durkin, Zach Usinger, Sander Borotzky, John Ferguson, Logan Bruneau, Dan Castorina and Ron Johnson took to the ice again to help this year’s tornado victims, and raised an amazing $3000 for the Red Cross. Really, kids these days....

Green Careers. Students of Mr Highland’s Earth Science class recently took to the high seas in a Marine Life Study Cruise to Long Island Sound, off the coast of Norwalk. Part of a BEI-sponsored project, Exploring Green Careers in STEM, the purpose of this inquiry-driven project was to explore green careers in Oceanography and Marine Sciences. This was no leisure cruise for the students. The educators put students to work in collecting and examining the animals from all levels of the water column, which included a few surprises. Ugh! Data collected will be entered into the biodiversity database which will help better understand the biodiversity of the Sound.
