The Anzacs of Arkhangel are our forgotten Diggers, never formally recognised by our government nor received by those who lined the streets to fete the men who returned from Gallipoli and France after World War I.As Melbourne lawyer and author Michael Challinger puts it: “They were not so much forgotten as unknown.”Challinger tells their remarkable story in Anzacs in Arkhangel, published on April 1 by Hardie Grant books. The details he provides have never been part of our official war history. It is a story that should be told, if only because of its contemporary relevance and the role of Winston Churchill in the ultimate failure of the enterprise, effectively an intervention in the civil war between Russia’s Bolsheviks and their opponents, on the side of the latter.Challinger does not explore the links with recent history other than to identify them. “In 1919 there was a coalition of the willing,” he says.“There were muddled aims, an invasion by subterfuge, an escalation in numbers. There was optimism and reassurance, then a sudden announcement that the situation was untenable.“The similarities to Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan are striking.“North Russia offered some obvious lessons.“Take care before you intervene in a civil war. Make sure your allies have the same aims. Have a political plan to put in place before you engage in regime change. Don’t embark on military action without firm support at home . . .“Readers will judge how well - if at all - these lessons have been learned.”For Churchill, the north Russian intervention was one failed campaign too many. The architect of the Gallipoli disaster was discredited and spent many years in the political wilderness as a result. The relevance of Churchill’s Russian campaign to Australian history should be seen in the context of his political battles to prevent Australian troops from returning home to defend Australia during the dark days of World War II. He may have become Britain’s wartime hero, but it can be argued be was no friend of Australia.Challinger says he cannot recall when he first learned the story of the Russian campaign. “I was a kid and I read one of those barber shop magazines - Pix or Post, I suppose - and I thought it an amazing story.”He later found scanty records of the operation in the Australian War Memorial, but no full account of Australian involvement. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in the early 1990s, Challinger was able to fully explore the story. He travelled to Russia several times, contacted local military historians and hiked through the forests to find the grave sites of Australian soldiers. He discovered much of the detail was lost in the mists of time. “But the Soviet-era Russians did not forget the invasion,” he says.

“They were very sensitive to the fact that 15 countries had invaded them and tried to strangle them at birth. We might have forgotten - but if the boot were on the other foot, we would never forget.”In 1917 Russia’s contribution to the Allies’ efforts against Germany came to an end. The Russians had lost five million men on the Eastern Front; the people were war-weary and the tsar had lost all authority. The Bolshevik revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin seized power and on December 2 announced a ceasefire between Germany and Russia. In the West the Russian withdrawal was seen as a betrayal. It allowed the Germans to rush troops from the east to the Western Front, where they mounted a huge offensive against the Allies, retaking all the ground lost during two years of trench warfare. After the ceasefire, the Russian empire began to disintegrate. Red and White armies faced off; Russia lost Ukraine, Poland and Finland, as well as the Baltic states of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. When Finland declared independence from Russia, German soldiers were sent to assist the dissident White Finns and the Allies feared an assault on Murmansk, a vital port on Russia’s north coast.Murmansk and nearby Arkhangel were key ports for Allied supplies in the war effort, and massive supplies of ammunition and equipment were held there. In order to protect these supplies, the British had stationed an aged battleship and a fleet of 12 armed trawlers at Murmansk. After a series of botched messages, the British were “invited” to intervene to protect Murmansk against a German-Finn invasion. The 130 marines available could not do the job on their own. The British officers wanted 6000 reinforcements and the war cabinet in London decided to send a military mission of 560 men to train loyal (White) Russians to defend themselves against the Germans and the Bolsheviks (Reds.)And so the Elope Force came into being. Nine Australians joined this contingent of Commonwealth volunteers, including sergeant Bert Perry from Horsham, Victoria, and sergeant John Kelly from Glen Innes, NSW. Perry had seen service in Gallipoli and France, and Kelly had been wounded in France. Only two VCs were awarded in the north Russian campaign and both went to Australians who, by extraordinary chance, had consecutive service numbers in the British relief force. This just a small part of the untold story. See more at: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/opinion/we-fought-for-churchill-in-russia/story-e6frg6zo-1225857296983

Disaster Aid Australia DART Response Teams, already working in the Philippines after the devastating earthquake on Bohol island, are in Leyte today with the Balay Mindanaw team to perform assessments and assist the sourcing and effective delivery of aid working alongside local government authorities. Team Leader Ed Cox who was deployed to Indonesia after the 2004 Tsunami described the devastation on Leyte as, "far greater than what I witnessed in my 10 years as an aid worker. I was in Bandah Aceh, Indonesia in 2004, what I have seen today is far worse than that, almost every home has been destroyed and thousands are missing: families are absolutely devastated.” Everything that Disaster Aid Australia has in its warehouse will be sent to the Philippines. Bill assured us that he would be back next week.

• Bill then introduced his front table including the guest speaker Michael Challinger and his wife Judy Challinger who was slightly nervous when she heard it was an all men’s Club. Bill then asked Members to introduce their guests. Greg Biggin introduced Dr Stuart McMillan who Greg said has a PHD

It will be a ladies night as well. Guests are invited at a cost of $20 and if the person is a prospective member they become a first time guest of the Club. IVAN’S HACKERSSaturday, 10 Nov - HIGHLIGHTS

IVAN’S HACKERS

It was raining at 7am and cold. Never the less 6 keen hackers Arthur, Daryl, Ian, Ivan, Ron and Tony came to play. Umbrellas were up at the start and the Prematch Putting competition was abandoned.High scores were the order of the day with 9 scores over 8 on a hole. In amongst these high scores Daryl did well with 3 pars whist Ian and Ron each got 2 pars.Tony took out Handicap honors. Ian was Best Off the Stick and took out the Long Drive. It was a good hit but also lucky no one else hit the fairway.Daryl won Nearest the Pin whilst Ron’s errant shot was awarded Nowhere Near Nearest the Pin.Daryl had a long putt to get his maiden Venus - he missed his Venus shot but did get his par.By the time both groups finished rain had stopped and players were rewarded with drinks on the house. Former RCB Member Gavin Bellis & rowing partner win award

You may remember Gavin Bellis who was a very active member of our club who resigned about 3 years ago due to other activities, principally training for competitive rowing for disabled athletes. Gavin had a hereditary disease (Spino cerebellar ataxia) which affected his legs and balance. On Saturday 9 November Gavin and his rowing partner Kathryn Ross were awarded Paralympic Sportspersons of the year. What an achievement. Gavin and rowing partner (not his wife) also won gold in the world championships this year in their rowing class - yes, the world. The Club sends their congratulations. Report Tony Rouse
