“  Simon’s 8 year old son Sam had watched this campaign with interest and decided he wanted to do something to help. When asked his  intentions, Sam  responded  that he was going  to work every Saturday until he had £100 with which he could purchase blankets for the needy children he had seen. He subsequently worked in his father’s workshop until he achieved his goal.   Simon  relayed  the  story  to members of his Rotary Club who promised  that  if Sam  raised £200  they would match him pound for pound. After several donations and a very successful quiz night an  impressive total of £820 was raised.

Dad Simon then searched for Rotary Clubs which assisted Myanmar and read of the Rotary Club of Essendon’s on‐going

efforts which began there in 2001. Our annual delegations have provided support to hospitals, orphanages, schools and

slum housing precincts, travel costs for each delegate are funded by the individual members of the party and every dollar

donated  is applied entirely to carefully vetted projects. This all  lead to Sam’s earnings being sent to The Rotary Club of

Essendon. The £820 he raised equated to $1370 so Sam continued to work until he had $1500 to donate.

In November, Simon advised that his town was about to reach its 400th birthday and that as part of the celebrations the

local council were holding ‘Unsung Heroes’ awards. Eight year old Sam was one of over 100 nominations for the awards

and he was subsequently announced as one of the five winners.

Sam’s hard‐earned contribution will be donated  to  the Eden Centre  for  the Disabled which caters  for many young boys and girls.  It  is  the only private  facility of  its kind  in Myanmar and our annual delegations have supported this very worthy establishment for a number of years. Further information about the Eden Centre can be found at www.edencentre.org  Sam’s parents can be very proud of their young son’s insight and altruism.

During  2013  The  Rotary  Club  of  Essendon  received  support  for  its projects in Myanmar from a most unexpected source.

An email arrived  from Simon McArthur,  then President‐Elect of  the Rotary

Club of  Limavady  in county Londonderry, Northern  Ireland. Simon advised

that a  local TV channel had run a campaign to help the “forgotten children

of Burma".

Relay for Life: This is a great event that raises money for a cause that no doubt has touched us all. Our team will be walking this year to especially remember Michael Baker. Our team will be known as Michael’s Mates. Many thanks to Andrew Ha, who has announced that he is again this year in the process of lining up a $2,000+ major sponsor for our team. Thank you to all our sponsors.

Rotary Youth Exchange Programme

Following the success of the hosting the lovely Charlotte and Allis over this year and last we have decided that in 2014-15 the Rotary Club of Essendon will again be hosting an exchange student. At this stage we will host a girl from Denmark (TBC).

I would like to ask families who intend to sponsor in this upcoming year to contact me as soon as possible so we can begin to make arrangements for our next student. We will have a maximum of four families this year and I intend to be one of those families, so get in quick if you want to have a most wonderful experience of being a host family.
