Club News

There is much Club News to share, since there has not been a club newsletter for the past month. Where to start?? First - congrats to Cliff Kopp on completing his walk around the entire Island in support of the homeless and hungry, which began December 24th and ended on New Year’s Day.

Interviews for Fundinjobo Education Support Grant:

This evening a team of our members had the privilege to Skype with students in South Africa. They have applied for a Education Support Grant which is available to a Fundinjobo Interact Club member that has been accepted to a University in South Africa. We are giving scholarships of $1,000 to four of the eight applicants. These kids are amazing and they touched our souls. We really need to figure out how to get $8,000 so we can help each of these deserving, hardworking students. Some of them have been orphaned and have come so far. It was amazing how they answered our interview questions. I must admit that this will be an evening that I won't forget. These

kids brought tears to my eyes, they are wonderful deserving human beings. Let's make this happen!!

Thank you Ann, Sylvia, Bernice, & Marcia

In December, club member Derek Chignell presented a wonderful program on the Global Grant Project that is going on in Kosovo. Following is an update that we recently received:

“..attached is the latest update on the schools project. Arben and I

have been working on this for a while, and is shows the exact situation. It is very encouraging to see the progress since the grant was awarded, eight schools done and six to go. As we all anticipated, several of the schools on the original list could not be serviced. As the report shows, in each case another school was waiting and ready to come up with the 25% required. Several schools were funded by the government (I think our project with Rotary is actually inspiring action on their part, which is very encouraging). I expect to visit in June again to see how things are going. The loose ends are the hygiene education and the consulting fees to be paid to the worker who has prepared each of the projects. I showed you the video of the first school drilling. What I could not convey well enough was the emotion of the Principal to finally have water in his school. You will notice on the list two schools where there is a thought to put in a purification unit. There is plenty of water, but it is contaminated (too close to septic systems, I think). Arben and one of the other Rotary members have been to inspect a local company that can supply a high volume purification unit (American made, I believe). They were impressed, because built into the contract are regular inspections and constant maintenance of the units. So this may be another approach to supplying water. At their end, they see it as a

good answer. A Swedish journalist has made a very nice little video to show on Swedish TV about the work in schools in Kosovo. She filmed in one of the villages where Water for Life works, but concentrated on the schools project. It is the one in Kllodernice which you will see on the list. I just received a copy, and there are copyright restrictions on it, but it is worth seeing. I will find a way to put it up in the cloud so you can see it. So that's the latest update. I will be back in Kona March 3-18, and will be speaking about the Kosovo project at Kona Mauka club.

On Thursday, January 14, the West Hawai’i Clubs joined together at the home of Assistant Governor Donna Hiranaka, for a presentation on Rotary Membership. Past District Governor Ayman El-Dakhakhni, and current District Membership Chair, gave a very informative, interesting and eye-opening presentation about how to grow our club membership. District Governor Del Green was also in attendance, and presented our club with two awards - EREY and our support of the Polio Campaign. Best wishes to Mike May as he recovers from his torn Achilles tendon. After being laid up for a while, it was nice to see him at the Board Meeting

last week sporting a walking boot cast. Mike and Dennis Rast are putting together the final touches on the Humane Society Project, and there will be one last workday to complete it. Date will be announced shortly. Have you paid your dues? Club Treasurer Cliff Kopp would appreciate if you would do so. RYLA is coming up soon! Club members are encouraged to participate - please see either Bernice or Bev.

January 2016 What is Rotary?

It is a leadership organization…

We’re made up of local business,

professional and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know

each other, form friendships, and

through that, we are able to get

things done in this community.
