SAINT ANNE’S CATHOLIC CHURCH BRISTOL, VIRGINIA July 23, 2017 Remember St. Anne’s in your Will and Trusts

This Weekend and throughout this week

we will be celebrating our PARISH FEASTDAY.

The Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne is July 26.

Our readings for this weekend’s Masses are:

Sirach 44:1, 10-15—Their name lives on and on.

1 Corinthians 13:4-13 —Love never fails.

SAINT JOACHIM & SAINT ANNE

Parents of Mary

Ancient tradition, dating back to the second century,

supplies these names for the parents of the Blessed Virgin

Mary. Saint Anne’s cult flourished from the sixth century

in the East and reached the West in the tenth century. The

cult of Saint Joachim is of more recent date.

According to tradition Anna, childless for many years,

reached a point in her life when, just short of despair, she

prayed that God grant her a child with a promise that should

her wish be fulfilled she would pledge the child to the

Temple. Anna, faithful to her word, presented her daughter,

given the name of Mary, at the Temple at the age of three.

Mary remained in the house of God for twelve years,

emerging at the age of fifteen with a purity and

wholesomeness found in no other creature of God, not only

a flawless maiden but one who had acquired the lore and

religion of the deepest scholars, something usually denied a

female child of those days.

Readings for this Week (July 24-29)

Romans 8:28-30

God predestined us to be conformed to the image of

the Son.

Matthew 13:44-52

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried

in a field.”

In the Gospel, Jesus tells more parables about the kingdom

of God, particularly about seeking and finding treasure. In

the first reading next Sunday, God offers Solomon anything

he wants, and Solomon chooses the treasure of a wise,

discerning heart. Let us listen for the gifts that God is

offering us and pray for the grace to choose wisely.

Nominations for Pastoral Council are being taken in

the commons this weekend (July 22/23). If you didn’t

get a chance to stop by the table, you may email or call

the parish office to nominate up to 3 people (including

yourself!) - must be received NLT Monday at 10 a.m.

To serve on the Council, you need to be age 18+, a

practicing Catholic in Full Communion, and registered

with our parish. Those nominated will be contacted to

ask if they agree to run for election. Those who agree

to run will submit a brief bio, including answers to

some questions, and a photo by August 1. Elections

pneumonia this past month. Your prayers and

thoughts have been good medicine and really helps in

times like this. May God bless all of you.”

A NOTE OF THANKS

TO THE PARISH OF SAINT ANNE

As many of you know, I will be retiring

August 1 after 24 years as your Director of

Liturgy and Music. I cannot express how

grateful I am for having the opportunity to serve

this Parish. Your prayers and support have

made serving here the most gratifying

professional experience of my life. I am deeply

thankful and I know that I couldn’t have served

in a better Parish.

Although I am looking forward to my

retirement, I regret that my decision was

influenced by a degradation of my hearing

abilities. About a year and a half ago, I started

to hear things out of tune and sometimes sounds

were even perceived as “noise”. Needless to say

this has added a lot of stress to my ability to

perform in my job. If it were not for the help

from my choir, cantors, members of the parish,

and my wife Rosie, I would not have been able

to perform this long.

I have been blessed while I have been here

and I couldn’t have found more wonderful

people to work with in all the areas of the

liturgical life of this Parish.

My prayers are with St. Anne’s community

and I look forward to serving as a parishioner

here at Saint Anne.

May God Bless You All!

Richard J. Davis

A Note from Fr. Nicholas….

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Saint

Anne Parish and Saint Anne School for your warm

welcome extended to me during my time of

transition. My assignment as the pastor of Saint

Anne has been a great source of joy for me and

each of you has contributed to that joy both in

hidden and visible ways. As we continue together

the great work that Christ has given us in His

vineyard, let us hope and pray that we, His

disciples, can make a fitting offering toward that

task which He has entrusted to each of us. Please

be assured of my prayers for each of you —

prayers of thanksgiving for your hospitality and

generosity as well as for your daily needs and

intentions.

Your servant in Christ,

Fr. Nicholas Mammi
