Who Are We?Rapid Circle

We are specialized in the Microsoft Cloud, Office 365, Azure, Dynamics CRM, and Enterprise Mobility.

Offices in Amsterdam, Pune (India) and Melbourne.

Founded in 2008 with a cloud only vision

Originally a SharePoint company, nowadays a full cloud service-provider.

Carried out one of the first Office 365 deployments in Europe..

AGENDA• Some background information• What makes this deployment complex• How to envision and design the hybrid solution• Migration scenario’s and workarounds for Exchange• Following the right pilot approach• Measuring and managing performance• How to handle OneDrive for Business• How to handle Office 365 ProPlus• Partnership Citrix & Microsoft

Page 5: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

WHAT MAKES THIS DEPLOYMENT CHALLENGING?• Caching .ost files on a network drive is not seen much• Microsoft does not support to sync a OneDrive folder location

which is set to a network drive. • Office 365 ProPlus requires approx. 20% more computing

resources (GPU,CPU and memory)• Making use of the online Office Licensing Service with shared

computer activation is tricky

Page 6: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

WHO ARE WE LOOKING AT?• The Pareto principle (also known as the

80/20 rule) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes

• We have often been observed to make 80% of use cases easier to implement and 20% of use cases much more difficult to implement

• This rule aligns perfectly with our design and stakeholders within the organization

Page 7: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

HOW TO ENVISION AND DESIGN THE HYBRID SOLUTION• Take the most effort in gathering all personas within the

organization• Align these personas with technical profiles and Office 365

services• Take cloud connectivity and network architecture very

seriously• Decide with the client how performance will be measured• Talk about assigning the right license to the right persona

MIGRATION SCENARIO’S AND WORKAROUNDS FOR EXCHANGE

Page 9: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

BUT WHY EXCHANGE HYBRID?User Experiences

• Migrate with minimum business impact

• Free Busy functionality• No recreating Outlook Profiles• Amazing flexibility while

migrating mail• One Global Address List• Secure hybrid mailflow• Only approach to pilot

thoroughly for a longer periodMigration Experience

Rich coexistence

SMALL RECAP..HYBRID FLEXIBILITY REALLY KICKS ASS • Especially when organizations work in a SBC concept• It gives the projectteam the ability to make small steps forward,

and backwards if required• Performing a cut-over migration would be a to big step or risk• With Modern Auth users won’t even notice Windows Auth prompts

at mailbox moves

Page 11: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

FOLLOWING THE RIGHT PILOT APPROACH• Make sure all your personas are part of the pilot• Be sure pilot waves are in line with the clients organization

chart• Don’t pilot Office 365 ProPlus and Exchange Online at the

same time• Take great effort in setting up communication and manuals• Be sure bandwidth and performance monitoring software is in-

place• The longer the pilot the better

Page 12: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

MEASURING AND MANAGING PERFORMANCE• Discuss performance in the very first meeting, be

transparent about expectations with your stakeholders• Be sure to do a very thorough technical assessment, don’t

forget CDN’s• After that get in touch with your personas to hear their

experiences• Remember the pareto principle (80/20) and get in touch

with your heavy users• Have workarounds in-place for heavy-users, at the end

caching is the best concept for them

Page 13: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

HOW TO HANDLE ONEDRIVE FOR BUSINESS• What is the user used to? • Is it fair to ask users to start

working in the browser instead of windows explorer?

• Adoption is key to success here• Next-Gen sync client is an

improvement

Page 14: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

OPTION #1 THE ONEDRIVEMAPPER• A free PowerShell script, with no

warranty • Can be used as a logon or on demand

script to map a OneDrive for Business location to driveletters.

• It has been downloaded over 90000 times and works like a charm

• Network dependency and bandwidth impact

Page 15: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

OPTION #2 THIRD-PARTY SOLUTIONS• Not free, but this solution brings some

warranty• User data remains on-premises

fileshares• No use of WebDAV protocol but bi-

directional sync• Cloud Connector or ExpanDrive?

Page 16: Thomas Verwer – Deploying Hybrid Office 365 in a Server Based Computing Concept

HOW TO HANDLE OFFICE 365 PROPLUS• Don’t forget Office Telemetry before rolling out• Requires more GPU than earlier Office versions• Don’t forget setting the <Property

Name="SharedComputerLicensing" Value="1" /> in the configuration.xml

• Make sure Hardware Acceleration is not enabled at Microsoft Office 2016 > Miscellaneous > Do not use hardware graphics acceleration.

• Remember to pilot and release Office separate from other workloads to be sure

PARTNERSHIP CITRIX & MICROSOFT

• It’s another sign of the new pragmatic Microsoft, where they care about driving more Azure consumption

• Microsoft will gradually wind down the delivery of Azure RemoteApp over the next year. Support ends 31st August 2017.

• Citrix and Microsoft develop the next generation of the Azure RemoteApp service hand in hand. The new XenApp "express" service.

• Last week Citrix Provisioning for Microsoft Office 365 as a Citrix Cloud Labs service became available
