Garden Centres and Department stores
Products to encourage wildlife into domestic gardens
Sources of Research
ContextLeisure activities are increasing in popularity. Many garden centres and department stores now have areas specifically targeting this consumer area.
Design Task 1A garden centre wishes to sell products to encourage wildlife into domestic gardens. Design and make a small product that could be sold in the garden centre.
Task Analysis
Write down:• What are you going to do now to further
research the task?• To further research the task I will look on
more websites to get more information • I could also look in books.• Ask people about gardens and stuff• Go to the libraries for more information
• Where will you go/visit?• I will go and visit garden centre and shops
that have bird boxes.• The libraries are a good place to go and
research
• What animals do you want to encourage? • I want to encourage al kinds of birds.
• What do you think you will make?• I think that I will make a wind mill.
Initial specification:1. Should be safe for you and the birds so
you don’t get a splinter.2. Should not have moving sails so the bird
doesn't get hit.3. Should have a removable top so you can
get in to it and remove the nest.

EExisting products Analysis of Research
From my research I have found that it has to be colourful and strong so if it fell it wont break it needs to be eye catching.
Design DecisionI have decided that my product:• should be strong so if it fell it wouldn’t break• could be colourful to attract users• Must be safe so you don’t get hurt • must be a reasonable price so they will buy it and not leave it.
Interesting features:
• the design is good so it is eye catching.
Things to avoid:
•the colouring is great so it would take a long time to paint and we don’t have that time to do it all in.
Interesting features:
• the box is hanging so the birds have comfort.
Things to avoid:
•the string could break in the high winds and fall so the birds could die.
Interesting features:
• the base is a plant pot but is very fragile
Things to avoid:
•the base could shatter if dropped so I could keep to a strong but not bulky structure.
Interesting features:
• its got a good shape
Things to avoid:
•the box is blank so you wouldn’t buy it because it didn't catch your eye.
Interesting features:
• the shape is good but it is not eye catching so you wouldn’t buy it.
Things to avoid:
•the colour Is bad on it so you wouldn’t buy it and I need to make mine colourful so people will buy it
Interesting features:
• the design is good so it is eye catching

EAesthetics it looks a bit blankAnd not a lot of people would buy it. Because it is quite small but a few would be cause it would attract small birds not huge ones. www.tomchambers.co.u

Customer age range about 5-20 so it can be painted by youths who have nothing else to do.
Cost•10:00 so it isn't too big so the market will buy it so you can sell it.
Size
20cm in height
10cm in width
Safety•It shall be very smooth so you don’t get a splinter or get an infection from a cut from the wood and it needs to be kind of light so it doesn't knock you out if it fell on you
Function for two birds
Special features it can stay on the floor and hang of a tree so it can be for any type of bird it could be a injured bird or a bird escaping a predator so its for any bird.
Materialsit could have a pine base and sides with an M.D.F back so you could get in to it and remove the nest when the birds have left.
Product Analysis
Ergonomics•Because they could see the birds and you could see them go in and come out of the box and because it is blank you could paint it with your own design .
Analysis of Research•Briefly sum up how this has helped you
•It has helped me because I now know that it has to be perfect for the customer and it has to be really safe.
Design decisions•What ways can this product influence your product
•By Creating different sized holes is a good way to encourage different sized birds so can have a variety of birds.

ESocial, moral, environmental and sustainability
issues
Analysis of Research
Design decisions For my design I have chosen to do a wind mill because it is going to be hung near a wind mill so the people who go there will be able to see it.
Social issues • Neighbours may find it offensive if it has
rude words or designs.• Looks good in the garden and to others so it
will get attention.• No sharp edges so insects, Neighbours and
yourself don’t get hurt.• Don’t make it look ugly or too big so it isn't
unattractive to Neighbours.• Make sure it fits in the garden.
Moral issues• Don’t steal things that don’t belong to you.• Try to use recycled materials like nails, ply and MDF (it will help the
environment.)• Safes the animals homes and places to live.
Sustainability issues• should be made with the
environment in mind.• It should be recyclable or some
parts should be. • Should be made with non-toxic
materials that may go in the atmosphere.
• Environmental issues• Not have any sharp bits• Made with recyclable
materials.• Make it look normal.• It is easy to dismantle and put
back together.• Should be made from
materials like plastic so it doesn't harm the environment.
6R’s
Recycle- is a process to change materials in to new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials
Reuse- to use an item again after you use it so then you use it for a different use
Refuse- to say no to unwanted rubbish and junk
Reduce- cut the amount of things you use like electricity and water.
Repair-

EDevelopment – Card modelling
Testing and evaluationI created a card model of my intended idea and asked my peers to evaluate my idea and suggest ways that it could be improved or modified. The improvements that were suggested were:
DecisionsI have decided to develop my idea so that:• It has moving sails.• It is detailed• It should have a domed roof.• Should not have sharp edges so
you don’t hurt yourself.• Have an acrylic or wooden roof.• Have a big enough hole for the
bird that is going to stay in there.
ADD PHOTOS of your card modelsComplete red decisions box – explain what changes you will make to your idea
I should make the sails spin.
I should make the wood model a bit smaller.
I should put some more detail on the windmill and sails.
I should try and make a domed roof.

Testing and evaluation• What do you think of:
• The size• Shape• Aesthetics (what it looks like)• How the idea will work (eg birds will fly in the opening and
make a nest inside MORE DETAIL THE BETTER)
Development
Design decisionsFurther modifications:
I have made a RM model of my idea. The changes that I realised I should make are:
• what changes have you decided to make based on your model?
• (eg Add a perch for the bird to land on before it enters the hole)
TESTING & EVALUATION
Third party opinion• I showed my model to one of my
target user group at school and they said:

Analysis of Research: • Explain which joint(s) you will use on
your product WITH REASONS WHY
Design decisions.
I have decided to use
• Finger joint because its strong and tough
• Dowel joint because its easy to make and is very strong.
ADD PHOTOS of your wooden jointsComplete the text and red outlined box, explain what joints you will use where on your final design
PICTURE PICTURE PICTURE PICTURE PICTURE PICTURE
Joint name Finger joint Dowel joint Mitre joint Lap joint Butt joint
Explain how suitable this joint would be for your product.
Eg. This finger joint would be suitable for the corners of my nesting box but it does take a long time to make and I have some gaps that needed filler so it might not be a high quality product.
This finger joint is a good joint but it takes some time and is a little hard to do but it would be suitable for my bird box because its strong and tough but my joint has gaps in it but I have put some filler in it and it is still strong to use so I think it will work.
Its easy to make the dowel joint and it takes less time so it will be suitable for the removable top on the bird box.
Is a little hard because when you glue it you have to make sure it doesn't break apart but it wouldn’t be suitable because its very flimsy.
Its hard to make and it takes time to do because you have to get the correct measurements witch is difficult and if you get them wrong you have to start again.
It is a very easy joint to do because you don’t have do a lot to make it but it wouldn’t be strong so I wouldn’t use it.

• Is there anything that could offend anyone?
• Will the design be safe when it is in use?
• Will the design encourage local wildlife into domestic gardens?
Moral• Is the design
safe?• Will it make life
better for local wildlife?
• What could you add to make it better?
• Consider how the design will be used?– Cleaned out– Hung up– Birds landing– Birds feeding
Cultural
• Could your design offend any different cultures?
• Could you add any cultural elements to your design? (like patterns, symbols, shapes)
• Do you need to change the design to appeal more to different cultures?
