T APPI has just reported “black ink” for the first time in eleven years for FY08. FY09 has begun strong. We just completed a very successful SuperCorrExpo, with more than 52 countries represented, 316 exhibitors and literally

a small city of attendees.

We are very proud to announce that PIMA has now officially combined with TAPPI. PIMA brings with it a very sound platform of management tools, events, and talented volunteers that will help TAPPI expand its market reach throughout the globe. We look forward to adding more management tracks, papers, books, training and other information to our offerings for FY09.

Please take time to look through our 2009 TAPPI Catalogue. During these unsettled financial times, we all need an edge to make it through. You just might find something here that will help you solve a problem in your facility, answer a question that you have or help advance your career.

My thanks go out to our staff, contractors, Board and our thousands of members for making 2008 a fantastic year for TAPPI. Let’s see what we can achieve together for 2009.

Best regards,

Larry N. MontagueTAPPI President

Gasification-Based Power and Liquid Fuels Production at Kraft Pulp and Paper Mills

By Stefano Consonni, Ryan E. Katofsky, and Eric D. LarsonAs the largest producer and user of biomass energy in the United States today, the U.S. pulp and paper industry has at its disposal a large and sustainable energy resource that it currently uses to meet much of its own energy needs. As the value of renewable energy grows in the future, pulp and paper producers could capitalize on

their unique resource base by extracting even more value. This book, based on several years of research by a team of leading experts, details how kraft pulp and paper mills can be transformed into integrated biorefineries that also produce renewable power and liquid fuels for export, while still making the same pulp and paper products as before. It describes in detail the design and performance of black liquor and woody biomass gasification-based technologies, assesses their commercial/financial viability, and quantifies potential national environmental and energy impacts of widespread introduction of gasification-based biorefineries at U.S. kraft pulp and paper mills.

serve the leaders, executives and managers of the global pulp and paper industry.

PIMA is the premier member group for management professionals in the pulp and paper industry, and TAPPI is the leading association for providing technical knowledge for the pulp, paper and allied industries. Together these organizations will deliver the

management skills and technical knowledge you rely on to enhance your career.

For members, one of the most immediate benefits of this new structure is that PIMA Management Division Membership will now be included in your TAPPI Membership, with no additional fee. A simple check box on the TAPPI membership application can make

any TAPPI member a member of the PIMA Management Division, eligible for all member benefits, including access to the TAPPI e-library and discounts on products and services such

as TAPPI PRESS products, events, training and standards.

Access to Knowledge and Networks

The primary benefit is that you become a true industry professional through exposure to the entire industry, not just

your company or the mill or area you work in. This is especially true now that TAPPI and PIMA are one organization.

Joe Konkel, PIMA Chair • Georgia-Pacific

‘‘ ‘‘Knowledge and networking are some of the most valuable

parts of a TAPPI/PIMA membership. It’s not always what you know but who you know that gets the job done in today’s

workplace. We are all asked to wear many hats in our jobs and we need a resource to go find answers from time to time.

Larry N. Montague, President • TAPPI

‘‘ ‘‘

I highly encourage others to join, especially younger people to learn from those who have come before them.

Maintaining “good” traditions and contact with where the industry has been to shape it for the future is critical to long term sustainability of the industry. (TAPPI/PIMA) gives us a forum to discuss what we need to do, as leaders of the industry to sustain it.

W. Roger Smith • Domtar Paper Company

‘‘‘‘The ability to net-work with both mill people and suppliers on discussing critical management issues facing our industry

is one of the main benefits I receive from TAPPI/PIMA membership. Once a member, volunteering to help on

TAPPI/PIMA specialists groups and conference committees makes you truly aware of these critical management issues.

Steve Tremont, PIMA Affiliate Chair • Ciba Corporation

Integrating ManagementSkills and Technical Expertise

Business, Management, and Leadership Development Resources for Leaders in the Global Pulp and Paper Industries

The Science of Success: How Market-Based Management Built the World’s Largest Private Company

by Charles Koch • Item Number: 08KOCH • List: $31 • Member: $23“A must-read for entrepreneurs and corporate executives that is also applicable to

the wider world. MBM is an invaluable tool for engendering excellence for all groups, from families to nonprofit entities. – Richard L. Sharp, Chairman, CarMax

“My father, Sam Walton, stressed the importance of fundamental principles—such as humility, integrity, respect, and creating value—that are the foundation for success. No one makes a better case for these principles than Charles Koch.” – Rob Walton, Chairman, Wal-Mart

“In a very thoughtful, creative, and understandable way, Charles Koch explains how he has used the science of human behavior to create a culture that has produced one of the world’s largest and most successful private companies. A must-read for anyone interested in creating value.” – William B. Harrison Jr., Former Chairman and CEO, JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Building a Knowledge-Driven Organization by Robert Buckman • Item Number: 08BUCKMAN • List: $35 • Member: $24

“Buckman Lab’s technical experts and far-flung sales force conduct dozens of virtual conversations each day, trading tips on arcane points of paper and leather making, water purification and sewage treatment. In the process, they’ve made this closely held,

Memphis, Tenn., chemical company with USD300 million in annual sales, a leading practitioner in the emerging field of knowledge management.” – The Wall Street Journal

“Buckman Labs has become a Mecca for other companies looking for “how-to” lessons in the art and science of knowledge management. Executives from AT&T, 3M, Champion International, International Paper company, and US West have made the pilgrimage to this small, privately held

chemical company to look and learn. What they’ve seen is a company that is fast, global, and interactive, built on a system that is simple, powerful, and revolutionary.” – Fast Company

“Buckman doesn’t just sell chemicals, it sells human chemistry.” – BusinessWeek

The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of The Learning Organizationby Peter Senge • Item Number: 08FIFTH • List: $30 • Member: $20

“Forget your old, tired ideas about leadership. The most successful corporation of the 1990s will be something called a learning organization.” – Fortune Magazine

“Over the years this book has left a lasting impression on me especially in the way I think about the issues we face within our organization. To resolve them or even to know where to begin we have to think about the systems that are the true cause of issues, and how to find the “defect” in the system and then work to eliminate it. This book shows a thought process for understanding

why organizations and individuals do what they do.” – Joseph Konkel PIMA president

The TAPPI/PIMA Engineering Handbook

Every year the Engineering Handbook has been included in the PIMA Membership Directory. Now this collection of data tables, conversion charts, and chemical property information will be available to all members as a series

of TIPs (Technical Information Papers). TAPPI TIPs are peer-reviewed documents that ensure you are looking at the most current and correct information.

If you are interested in participating in the review process of the Engineering Handbook please contact [email protected].
