Tertiary Sector

The tertiary sector of the economy is the service industry. >provides services to the general population and to businesses. Activities include retail and wholesale sales, transportation and distribution, entertainment (movies, television, radio, music, theater, etc.), restaurants, clerical services, media, tourism, insurance, banking, healthcare, and law. In most developed and developing countries, a growing proportion of workers are devoted to the tertiary sector. In the U.S., more than 80% of the labor force are tertiary workers.

LOCATION INFLUENCE on QUATERNARY services

High-level services aimed at the collection, processing, and manipulation of information and capital – are more diverse.

Some of these services are strongly tied geographically to the locus of economic activity.

Banking requires a high level of interpersonal contact and therefore tend to be located near businesses they are serving.

Quinary Sector

Some consider there to be a branch of the quaternary sector called the quinary sector, which includes the highest levels of decision making in a society or economy tied to research and or higher education.

This sector would include the top executives or officials in such fields as government, Scienceuniversitiesnonprofithealthcare, and the media.

Location influence on QUINARY SERVICES

Those who work in the quinary sector jobs tend to be concentrated around nodes of quinary activity –Government seats, universities, and corporate headquarters.

Corporate headquarters tend to located in large metropolitan areas.

All sorts of high-level research and development activities are located on the fringes of universities, and a host of specialized consultants are concentrated around government centers.

These then become major nodes of quinary activity.
