2.

O, star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding Guide us to thy perfect light. The First Noel The first Noel, the angels did say, Was to certain poor shepherds, in fields as they lay, In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Noel, Noel. Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel! Noel, Noel. Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel! Born is the King of Israel!

1 Night ambiance.

GRUFFY That was beautiful! Do you guys know Swanny River?

NARRATOR

Uh, Gruffy, excuse me. We have guests.

GRUFFY Guests?

(discovers the audience)

Well, hey!

NARRATOR Ladies and gentlemen, this is my good friend from the jungle, Gruffy Bear.

GRUFFY

(topping him) Good friend Gruffy Bear? This is my good friend from the jungle, the Narrator!

Page 3: Three Wise Men and a Baby

3.

NARRATOR

Well, thank you, Gruffy.

GRUFFY Say, have you heard this group sing? They’re great! Come on, you guys! Way down upon the swanny river! Everybody! Way down upon the swanny -- together now! Way down upon -- we’re not together here!

NARRATOR

Uh, Gruffy --

GRUFFY Wait, wait! They were just getting it!

NARRATOR

Uh, Gruffy, they’re here to help us tell the story of Christmas.

GRUFFY

It’s a good thing. Have you ever tried to get them to sing Swanny River?!

NARRATOR

Uh, no.

GRUFFY Wait a minute! Did you say the story of Christmas?! You know the story of Christmas?!

NARRATOR

Well, yes. You see, we jungle narrators actually tell many types of stories. Stories about cheetahs, and bears, and elephants --

GRUFFY

And bears!

NARRATOR Uh, yes, and bears.

GRUFFY

Love those bear stories.

Page 4: Three Wise Men and a Baby

4.

NARRATOR

And the one of the most important stories is the story of Christmas.

GRUFFY That’s one of my favorites! The stockings, the tree, the presents, those candy canes. Love that stuff.

NARRATOR Well, Gruffy, that is often part of how we celebrate Christmas. But it’s not really what Christmas is all about.

GRUFFY

Oh, of course. How could I forget? No, it’s that whole fat guy with the beard and the red-nosed moose thing. Yeah, sure, anybody knows that. ‘Tis the season! Fa la la la la!

NARRATOR Well --

GRUFFY

What does he say again? “Hey, hey, hey!”

NARRATOR Uh, I believe it’s, “Ho, ho, ho.”

GRUFFY Nah, I think it’s, “Hey, hey, hey.”

NARRATOR

Okay. But that’s still not what Christmas is all about. This is the time of year we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, and tell the story of Mary and Joseph in the lowly manger, and how they were visited by the wise men and shepherds.

GRUFFY

Hold on here. That’s not how we tell the story of Christmas in the jungle! You forgot all the beginning stuff.

Page 5: Three Wise Men and a Baby

5.

NARRATOR

I did? Well, where would you start the story?

As Gruffy speaks, a really young child, wearing a long white wig and beard, dressed in a white tunic with a globe in one hand and a lightning bolt in the other enters (or light comes up on him).

GRUFFY See, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth --

NARRATOR

Gruffy, whoa, whoa. We’ll be here all night if you go back that far!

Really disappointed, the child exits (or the light goes down).

GRUFFY Oh. Well, maybe you’re right. Let’s see. Moses came down this mountain carrying these ten commandments --

As Gruffy says this, the child reenters, grinning, now holding tablets of the ten commandments.

NARRATOR Gruffy --

The child gives the Narrator a look, shakes his head, and exits.

GRUFFY Uh, and then Joseph said to Mary, he said, uh --

NARRATOR

There you go. Here, let me help you out. Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem, and there was no room for them in the inn.

GRUFFY

There you go rushing again. You forgot about the whole reason they went to Bethlehem.

NARRATOR

Huh?

Page 6: Three Wise Men and a Baby

6.

GRUFFY

‘Cause they had to pay their taxes.

NARRATOR Oh. Yes, of course.

CHEETAH BONITA

What’s taxes?

CHEETAH ANITA Yeah. What is that?

NARRATOR

Hm. Well, it’s kinda like this. On the opposite side of the stage from Gruffy and the Narrator, two kids in tunics enter.

KID #1 I’m from the government. How much money you got?

KID #2

A dollar.

KID #1 Give it to me.

He does, and the two kids exit.

NARRATOR That’s pretty much how it works. And you’re right, Gruffy, they were going to pay taxes. But they were also fulfilling a prophecy from a long time ago.

GRUFFY

That was a busy weekend. SONG 2: Candle in the Dark (Julie Miller) 1:50. (J. Miller) Can you hear the angels’ song Break the silence of the night? Can you see the star above Split the darkness with its light? Now the prophets had foretold Of the Savior Who would come

Page 7: Three Wise Men and a Baby

7.

God has made the way for us He has sent His own dear Son Like a star that is so bright Like a candle in the dark Jesus is the shinning light In our hearts In the town of Bethlehem There is born a baby Boy He has come, the gift of God Let the whole world sing for joy Like a star that is so bright Like a candle in the dark Jesus is the shinning light In our hearts Let us join the angels’ song That breaks the silence of the night We can see the star of love Jesus is its shinning light. We can see the star of love Jesus is its shinning light.

2 Night ambiance.

NARRATOR Yes, that was a very special night. A night that will be remembered and celebrated for the rest of time. And on into eternity.

GRUFFY

I’ll say. Joseph and Mary enter and walk up to a hotel front desk.

NARRATOR Of course, when they finally arrived in Bethlehem, I’m not sure Mary and Joseph were as concerned with making history as they were with finding a room for the night.

Joseph taps a few times on a bell on the counter. A beat. He taps on the bell again just as the Innkeeper enters.

Page 8: Three Wise Men and a Baby

8.

INNKEEPER

What? What is it? What’s with the dinging? Stop with the dinging already! Oy, I’ve got such a headache! Let me guess. You’d like a room.

JOSEPH

Well, yes.

INNKEEPER You and everybody else in the world tonight.

JOSEPH

(innocently) No. Just me and my wife.

INNKEEPER

Such a wise guy. What do you think, you’re the first person coming in here looking for a room tonight? Didn’t you see the sign, Mr. Smartie Pants? “No vacancy.” Did you try any of the places down the road?

JOSEPH

They all had signs that said, “No vacancy.”

INNKEEPER What, their signs are bigger than mine? We have absolutely no room, Mr. Smartie Pants. No place for you to stay. No beds, no showers, no baths. Nothing! We got nothing for you, Mr. Big Shot with no reservations!

NARRATOR

It was plain to see this was going to be a tough night to get a room in this town.

INNKEEPER

Now beat it. Get lost. There’s no place for you here.

MARY

C’mon, Joseph.

Page 9: Three Wise Men and a Baby

9.

Joseph and Mary start to walk off.

NARRATOR Just then the Innkeeper’s wife entered.

INNKEEPER’S WIFE

Murray, more towels for room four, and room six wants ice, lots of ice. What they’re doing with all the ice, I’d like to know! And what’s with the dinging? Enough with the dinging already! What’s with the dinging?

INNKEEPER

(pointing to Joseph) Mr. Wise Guy --

INNKEEPER’S WIFE

Oh, also room seven’s out of those little tiny bars of soap.

INNKEEPER

Yes, dear.

INNKEEPER’S WIFE Murray, Murray, find some place for this nice young couple to stay. What are you thinking?

INNKEEPER But, I --

INNKEEPER’S WIFE

Can’t you see she’s gonna have a baby?

INNKEEPER Yes, dear.

The Innkeeper’s wife exits.

NARRATOR But there really was no room for them in the inn.

The Innkeeper turns to Mary and Joseph.

INNKEEPER Follow me.

Page 10: Three Wise Men and a Baby

10.

They walk off together.

NARRATOR The only place the Innkeeper had for them to stay was out in the stable.

GRUFFY

What’s the matter with that?

NARRATOR That’s where they keep the animals.

GRUFFY

What’s the matter with that?

NARRATOR Ah, well, a stable is not a very appropriate place for the King of kings to be born. Yet, no room is no room. And there was no room for them in the Inn.

SONG 3: No Room for the Baby Lord Jesus (Kids) 2:51. (Mike Milligan) No room in the inn No room to be found No room for the baby Lord Jesus No room on the earth For the place of His birth No room for the baby Lord Jesus Not a Bethlehem soul Knew the glorious role Of the birth of the baby Lord Jesus ‘Twas a cold stable stall Where the greatest of all Came to visit His world, baby Jesus Jesus, heavenly King Out in the cold from the start Jesus, heaven You bring Come make Your home in my heart A castle built for a king Where His praises could ring Should have greeted the baby Lord Jesus

Page 11: Three Wise Men and a Baby

11.

Where the whole world could see All His royal majesty And could honor and love baby Jesus Jesus, heavenly King Out in the cold from the start Jesus, heaven You bring Come make Your home in my heart Jesus, heavenly King Out in the cold from the start Jesus, heaven You bring Come make Your home in my heart Come make Your home in my heart

3 Night ambiance.

NARRATOR So, Mary and Joseph stayed out in the stable.

Barnyard animal sounds. And plenty of ‘em.

JOSEPH This isn’t too bad. Wait a minute, I’m seeing some possibilities here. Say we move this cow over to the left a little --

MARY

Oh, you’re right, that is much nicer. I hadn’t pictured the cow there.

NARRATOR

Joseph and Mary were doing what they could to try and make the best of things.

JOSEPH

Oh, honey, what am I thinking? This is no place for you. This is where animals sleep.

Not an animal in the stable is asleep.

JOSEPH And I hope they do that soon.

Page 12: Three Wise Men and a Baby

12.

NARRATOR

But even the animals could sense that this was no ordinary event.

SONG 4: Who’s This in Our House (The Animals) 1:40. (J. Miller) Who’s this in our house? Who’s this in our house? They are not sheep, they are not cows They are not goats, they are no mouse! They’re not the kind this barn allows Who’s this in our house? These strangers in our house! Who’s this in our house? Who’s this in our house? There’s humans here to spend the night Should we be friendly, should we bite? Should we object or be polite? It’s given us a fright! These strangers in our house! They have no fur upon their toes They have no hoofs and no wet nose They won’t eat hay, they do wear clothes What they might do, who knows? Who’s this in our house? Bach, bach, bach, bach, bach! Perhaps we’re making too much fuss These days you don’t know who to trust These strangers might be dangerous They don’t belong with us! These strangers in our house! They do seem different, actually Perhaps they’d be good company In fact, as far as we can see They’re harmless as can be Who’s this in our house? Woof, woof, woof, woof, woof! They don’t appear to pose a threat We wonder if they’d like a pet They’d better not be leaving yet Or we might get upset! These strangers in our house! Who’s this in our house? These strangers in our house!

Night ambiance.

NARRATOR Mary looked around at the animals. And then smiled.

MARY

Joseph, it’s okay. Besides, when this little King comes into the world, this stable will be more beautiful than any room could ever be.

SONG 5: Anywhere He Is (Mary) 0:00. (J. Miller) Only straw for His bed And no jeweled crown for His head Just a barn for His home And a manger will be His royal throne Though it may be just a stable With animals and hay Though no kingly palace will be His Though it may be dark and dirty And though it may be cold The most beautiful place is where He is Anywhere He is So the cattle and the sheep Are the company this King will keep But the beauty of His face Will bring light and glory to this place Though it may be just a stable With animals and hay Though no kingly palace will be His Though it may be dark and dirty And though it may be cold The most beautiful place will always be Anywhere He is Only straw for His bed And no jeweled crown for His head Just a barn for His home And a manger will be His royal throne

Page 14: Three Wise Men and a Baby

14.

Though it may be just a stable With animals and hay Though no kingly palace will be His Though it may be dark and dirty And though it may be cold The most beautiful place is where He is Anywhere He is Anywhere He is

5 Night ambiance.

NARRATOR And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Three children, dressed as shepherds and padded out to look very fat, enter (or light comes up on them).

SHEPHERD #1 You know, we sit out here watching over our flocks every night while the sheep get plenty of sleep.

SHEPHERD #2 Go figure.

SHEPHERD #3

Have you ever wondered how many days it would take to walk this herd of sheep all the way around the world in a straight line, backwards?

SHEPHERDS #2

Not backwards, no.

SHEPHERD #3 Ninety-seven years, six months, two weeks, two days, four hours, and thirty-two seconds.

SHEPHERD #2

Is that good weather or bad?

SHEPHERD #3 Good.

Page 15: Three Wise Men and a Baby

15.

SHEPHERD #2

Oh, good, well, of course. That’s the easy one.

An Angel in a bright white robe enters.

NARRATOR Just then, an angel appeared.

ANGEL

(commanding voice) Fear not.

The shepherds look up.

SHEPHERDS Ahhhhh!!!

ANGEL

I said, “Fear not!”

SHEPHERDS Aahhhhhhhh!!!!!

ANGEL

What part of “Fear not” are you not understanding? Never mind. Listen up. Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people.

A beat.

SHEPHERDS Aahhhhhhhh!!!!!

ANGEL

Quiet down. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

NARRATOR

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying --

Page 16: Three Wise Men and a Baby

16.

Angels come out from everywhere --

ANGELS Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

SONG 6: Glory to God in the Highest (Kids Choir) 2:07. (J. Miller) Glory to God in the highest, peace to men on earth Glory to God in the highest, peace to men on earth Don’t be afraid, I bring good news Of the Saviours’ birth Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth This day in the town of David to you a King is born This day in the town of David to you a King is born And He is your Messiah, His name is Christ the Lord This day in the town of David a King is born Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Glory to God in the highest, peace to men on earth Glory to God in the highest, peace to men on earth Don’t be afraid, I bring good news Of the Saviours’ birth Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth A Baby in a manger to you will be the sign A Baby in a manger to you will be the sign And wrapped in swaddling clothes there The new-born King you’ll find A Baby in a manger will be the sign Glory to God in the highest, peace to men on earth Glory to God in the highest, peace to men on earth Don’t be afraid, I bring good news Of the Saviours’ birth Glory to God in the highest Glory to God in the highest Glory to God in the highest And peace on earth!

ACT TWO FADE IN:

6 Night ambiance.

NARRATOR Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.

GASPAR

All right, think, think. What should we bring the King for his birthday?

MELCHIOR

I’ve got the perfect gift. I’m bringing gold.

GASPAR Very good, very good. However, I, too, have the perfect gift. I’m bringing myrrh.

MELCHIOR

Oh, excellent, excellent. Such a wise choice.

GASPAR Thank you. Now, Binky, what are you bringing?

BINKY

Mmmm. I don’t know. I’m was thinking… a tie?

GASPAR & MELCHIOR

A tie?

BINKY A toaster?

GASPAR

How do we know you’re really a wise man?

Page 18: Three Wise Men and a Baby

18.

BINKY

Soap-on-a-rope?

MELCHIOR Can you even spell wise man?

BINKY

Oh, I know! I’ve got it! Frankincense!

GASPAR & MELCHIOR Frankincense!

MELCHIOR That’s more like it.

GASPAR Now there’s a gift for a king.

MELCHIOR

Indeed, you are a wise man.

BINKY Although soap-on-a-rope isn’t bad.

GASPAR

You’re new at this, aren’t you?

NARRATOR Once the wise men figured out what gifts they were going to bring for the new-born King, they were on their way.

MELCHIOR

All right, let’s go.

GASPAR Okay.

MELCHIOR

Okay.

GASPAR How do we get there?

MELCHIOR

I thought you had a map.

Page 19: Three Wise Men and a Baby

19.

GASPAR I thought you had a map.

MELCHIOR

Oh, that’s just great. Some wise men we are.

BINKY Look!

NARRATOR

Just then one of the wise men pointed to a bright star that seemed to light up the whole sky.

GASPAR

That’s quite a star, Binky. Now, where are we going to get a map at this time of night?

BINKY

I think we should go this way, guys.

GASPAR What are you talking about? Why?

BINKY

Because. Look.

GASPAR Binky! Enough with the star. We’ve seen the star, all right?

MELCHIOR

No, wait. I think he’s on to something. I’ll bet that star will led us to --

GASPAR & MELCHIOR A map!

MELCHIOR

Exactly.

GASPAR Let’s go.

Page 20: Three Wise Men and a Baby

20.

NARRATOR

Indeed the wise men were on to something. And while they followed the star, they thought about the wonderful new-born King, and the gifts they were bringing to Him.

SONG 7: Three Wise Men (The Wise Men) 3:43. (Phil Lollar) We’re traveling from nation unto nation We’re following the path of yonder star And one day we will reach our destination It’d go more quickly if we had a car! Our trek has led us through the scorching desert Where mirages make us disbelieve our eyes And the sun beats down so hot it makes your head hurt It makes you wonder why they call us “wise . . .” CHORUS: We are the Three Wiiise--men As we travel `cross the desert sand we sing: I’m Gaspar! I’m Melchior! I’m Binky! Three Wise Men bearing presents for the King! GASPAR: Listen to me brother learned fellows: The gift I bring is valuable indeed! It’s shiny and it’s heavy and it’s yellow And it comes in handy when you are in need! With it you can purchase a new camel Get every pair of shoes you own re-soled Some people even use it as enamel The gift of which I speak, of course, is gold! MELCHIOR: Fellow voy-a-ger I’m afraid I must demur For the things that you infer Send my mind into a whir! I’m sure you’ll concur For the little Carpenter The greatest gift we can transfer Is my little jar of myrrh!

Page 21: Three Wise Men and a Baby

21.

BINKY: If you please don’t take offense I don’t mean to make you tense See, I know I have no sense and I lack intelligence I so often miss the clues and I know it isn’t news that for me to count to twenty I must first remove my shoes But I have here in my sack something both of you still lack I have carried it so long that now my camel is hunched back so I suspend the suspense as I put in my two cents to defend the excellence of my bag of frankincense They all repeat their verses at the same time with growing intensity: GASPAR Listen to me brother learned fellows: The gift I bring is valuable indeed! It’s shiny and it’s heavy and it’s yellow And it comes in handy when you are in need! With it you can purchase a new camel Get every pair of shoes you own re-soled Some people even use it as enamel The gift of which I speak, of course, is gold!

MELCHIOR Fellow voy-a-ger I’m afraid I must demur For the things that you infer Send my mind into a whir! I’m sure you’ll concur For the little carpenter The greatest gift we can transfer Is my little jar of myrrh!

BINKY If you please don’t take offense I don’t mean to make you tense See, I know I have no sense and I lack intelligence I so often miss the clues and I know it isn’t news that for me to count to twenty I must first remove my shoes But I have here in my sack something both of you still lack I have carried it so long that now my camel is hunched back so I suspend the suspense as I put in my two cents to defend the excellence of my bag of frankincense

They start arguing, then: TOGETHER: I bring my gift to lay before the new-born Savior Gold and Myrrh and Frankincense so fine I’m sure He’ll look upon our gifts with favor But the one He’ll like the best of all is mine

Page 22: Three Wise Men and a Baby

22.

CHORUS: We are the three Wiiise--men As we travel `cross the desert sand we sing: I’m Gaspar! I’m Melchior! I’m Binky! Three wise men bearing presents for the King! Three wise men bearing presents for the King! Three wise men bearing presents for the King!

7 Night ambiance.

NARRATOR So the wise men and the shepherds set out to find the baby Jesus.

The Shepherds enter suddenly, backwards, as if startled by something off-stage.

SHEPHERDS Ahhhh!!!!

SHEPHERD #1

Guys, can we stop yelling? My throat is killing me. We haven’t seen an angel in over two nights, and still the slightest little thing and --

SHEPHERDS

Ahhhh!!!!

SHEPHERD #1 See what I mean?

SHEPHERD #2

You’re right, you’re right. But how about those angels?

SHEPHERDS

Ahhhhhh!!

SHEPHERD #2 I was sore afraid.

Page 23: Three Wise Men and a Baby

23.

SHEPHERD #3

You know, by my calculations, the number of days in a year divided by the approximate speed at which we’re traveling, well, the bottom line is, it could take us a while to get there.

SHEPHERD #2

Is that good weather or bad?

SHEPHERD #3 Good.

SHEPHERD #2

Oh, good, well, of course.

SHEPHERD #1 Guys, please. You think we ought to bring something? You think people are going to bring gifts? Maybe we should stop and get something.

SHEPHERD #2

Yeah, what do you think?

SHEPHERD #3 Maybe... a tie?

SHEPHERD #1 & 2

A tie? They consider it.

SHEPHERDS Not bad.

SHEPHERD #1

Wait a minute. What are we thinking? We’ve got to get to the city of David. The angel said nothing about having the time to stop for gifts.

SHEPHERD #2

The angel?

SHEPHERD #1 Yeah.

Page 24: Three Wise Men and a Baby

24.

SHEPHERDS

Ahhhhh!!!!

NARRATOR Scared though they may have been, the Shepherds pressed on. For it was all they could do to contain the excitement within themselves. They were going to see the King!

SONG 8: Going to See the King (The Shepherds) 2:30. (Carlson, Miller, Milligan) Going to see the King Going to see the King Going to see the King of everything Going to see the King A little baby King Going to see the new-born King of kings In the city of David There’s a Baby so small He’s lying in a manger He’s King of one and all Going to see the King Going to see the King Going to see the King of everything Going to see the King A little baby King Going to see the new-born King of kings Angels in heaven are singing Giving God glory and praise Good tiding of great joy Forever and always Going to see the King Going to see the King Going to see the King of everything Going to see the King A little baby King Going to see the new-born King of kings King of kings, King of all things King of kings, King of all kings Going to see the King Going to see the King

Page 25: Three Wise Men and a Baby

25.

Going to see the King of everything Going to see the King A little baby King Going to see the new-born King of kings Glory in the highest Peace and good will to all men In His heavenly kingdom Christ’s reign will never end Going to see the King Going to see the King Going to see the King of everything Going to see the King A little baby King Going to see the new-born King of kings Going to see the new-born King of kings

8 Night ambiance.

NARRATOR So, the shepherds walked on. But the wise men were stopped in Jerusalem because King Herod wanted to find out about the coming Messiah.

HEROD

Gentlemen, let me go over this one more time. You have been following -- what?

GASPAR

Yonder star, highness.

HEROD A star. Mm-hm. And you’re bringing this new-born king gifts, I presume?

MELCHIOR Yes, your greatness.

HEROD

I noticed you didn’t bring me any gifts.

GASPAR Sire?

Page 26: Three Wise Men and a Baby

26.

HEROD Gifts for the king. Does the name, “King Herod,” mean anything to you?

GASPAR (thinking really hard)

King.

MELCHIOR Hmm.

GASPAR King.

HEROD “King Herod?”

BINKY King Herod.

HEROD King?

GASPAR, MELCHIOR AND BINKY

Hmm.

GASPAR I knew a Kevin Herod once.

MELCHIOR

I don’t know.

GASPAR Sorry.

HEROD

We’ll let it go this time. Kevin Herod. So, what are you bringing this -- king.

GASPAR

Gold, myrrh, and frankincense.

HEROD Frankincense, what an excellent choice. I’m sure a king would love frankincense. Had you considered a tie?

Page 27: Three Wise Men and a Baby

27.

WISE MEN

A tie, majesty?

HEROD Just checking to see if you were real wise men.

BINKY

(volunteering) I thought of a tie.

GASPAR & MELCHIOR

Shhh, hey.

GASPAR Uh, but then he thought of frankincense right after, my liege. Not two seconds passed.

HEROD

Gentlemen, I want you to continue following your star and find this Child. This King. And when you’ve found Him, send your star back to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.

WISE MEN

Yes, your majesty.

HEROD Kevin Herod.

NARRATOR

And with that the wise men were on their way once again, following yonder star.

SONG 9: Star of Wonder (The Wise Men) 2:58. (Rand Chesshir) Star of wonder, star up yonder Star that makes my world so bright Star of wonder, star up yonder Will lead me to my Lord and King tonight So many nights I’ve searched the sky To wish upon a star Yet what I see in all my dreams

Page 28: Three Wise Men and a Baby

28.

Is here before my very eyes Star of wonder, star up yonder Star that makes the world so bright Star of wonder, star up yonder Will lead me to my Lord and King tonight What does it mean, this star I’ve seen When night becomes as bright as day How could it that just for me (And me! And me!) That star will lead the way Star of wonder, star up yonder Shining down upon the Holy One Star of wonder, star up yonder Proclaims to us that Christ is born Oh, let the whole world see The star that shines for you and me Star of wonder, star up yonder Brighter than the moon that shines Star of wonder, star up yonder The wish I made came true tonight Star of wonder, star up yonder Brighter than the moon that shines Star of wonder, star up yonder The wish I made came true tonight

9 Night ambiance.

NARRATOR And Mary brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger. Shortly thereafter they heard a knock at the stable door.

The nativity. Mary, Joseph, and the Shepherds stand around the sleeping Baby Jesus. There is a knock at the door. Joseph answers it.

JOSEPH Can I help you?

Page 29: Three Wise Men and a Baby

29.

GASPAR

Yes, um, my friends and I, we’re wise men, we’ve been following yonder star and it seems to be shining directly over this spot.

JOSEPH

Why, yes. Of course. MELCHIOR

You know?

JOSEPH Yes.

GASPAR

Then it’s here?

JOSEPH Of course.

WISE MEN

The map!

JOSEPH Huh?

NARRATOR

Soon the wise men realized they were in the birth place of the King of Kings and they presented Him with their gifts.

MELCHIOR

Gold.

BINKY Frankincense.

GASPAR

And myrrh.

NARRATOR Joseph and Mary smiled.

JOSEPH

Oh, thank you.

Page 30: Three Wise Men and a Baby

30.

MARY

You’re most kind.

NARRATOR Which reminded the shepherds that they too had brought a gift.

SHEPHERDS

(stepping forward proudly)

A tie!

MARY A tie?

NARRATOR

The wise men looked up.

WISE MEN A tie?

GASPAR

You actually brought a tie?

SHEPHERD #1 (proudly)

Why, yes.

SHEPHERD #2 (patting Shepherd #3 on the back)

It was his idea.

SHEPHERD #1 (proudly)

Well, actually, we all thought of it.

SHEPHERDS That’s true./Yes, I guess we all thought of it together./We were very excited.

NARRATOR

Joseph received the shepherds’ gift.

JOSEPH Not bad.

Page 31: Three Wise Men and a Baby

31.

SHEPHERDS Thank you.

GASPAR

So you had to stay out here, with the animals in the stable?

NARRATOR

-- said the wise man.

MARY There was no room in the inn.

NARRATOR

The shepherds looked around.

SHEPHERD #1 (look around, impressed)

Very nice.

NARRATOR The gifts were all wonderful. But everyone agreed the greatest gift was the One God gave... to all mankind. The baby Jesus.

SONG 10: Thank You for Your Only Son (Mary, Joseph, Wise Men, Shepherds) 2:49. (Mike Milligan) The heavenly Father so loved the world He send His only Son Down to the earth from heaven to show us The love God has for everyone Jesus was born here, not in a castle But in a manger stall A present from heaven wrap in a manger God the Father’s gift to all Thank You, oh, thank You, my God, for what You’ve done You gave the greatest Gift of all Thank You for Your only Son. Tender and lowly, Baby so holy Born as the King of kings Jesus the Savior, Lord of all lords Peace and goodwill to the earth He brings

Page 32: Three Wise Men and a Baby

32.

Thank You, oh, thank You, my God, for what You’ve done You gave the greatest Gift of all Thank You for Your only Son. Little Lord Jesus Babe so small Jesus, God’s greatest Gift to one and all The heavenly Father so loved the world Love He gives everyone Jesus is mine and Jesus is yours Thank You for Your only Son Thank You, oh, thank You, my God, for what You’ve done You gave the greatest Gift of all Thank You for Your only Son. Thank You for Your only Son.

11 Night ambiance. Gruffy hands the Narrator a gift.

GRUFFY Merry Christmas, Nar.

NARRATOR

Oh, thank you, Gruffy. You shouldn’t have.

GRUFFY Oh. Well, sorry. Guess I’ll take this back, then. I was just kind of in the giving mood and all.

NARRATOR

No, Gruffy, it’s just a figure of speech. GRUFFY

Oh. Great. Well, here.

NARRATOR Thank you.

GRUFFY

You’ll never guess what it is.

NARRATOR A tie?

Page 33: Three Wise Men and a Baby

33.

GRUFFY

How do you do that?!

NARRATOR I was just --

GRUFFY

You narrators, I tell ya, you gotta get up pretty early in the morning --

NARRATOR

Well, Gruffy, that’s pretty much the way it happened. That’s what Christmas is really all about. What do you think?

GRUFFY

I love this story. But I still say you left out way too much. See, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

NARRATOR

Gruffy.

GRUFFY And the earth was, well, without form and void.

NARRATOR

Uh, Gruffy, I --

GRUFFY And darkness was on the face of all the deep.

NARRATOR Uh, Gruffy --

GRUFFY Am I leaving anything out?

NARRATOR

Not a single word.

GRUFFY And I’m gonna tell you, you talk about light, now this was real light! I mean, there was light everywhere!

Page 34: Three Wise Men and a Baby

34.

NARRATOR

Gruffy -- Overlap Gruffy going on with song intro.

GRUFFY We aren’t talking about your wimpy little twenty-five, forty watt bulbs. This was light!
