FINALISTS IN LANGUAGES SPELLING BEE COMPETITION Two Year 7 students successfully reached the
final of the Routes into Languages Spelling
Bee competition held at Anglia Ruskin
University in Cambridge on 4 July. Joseph
McLaughlin 7E2 and Poom Narongpun 7E1
took part in the German challenge and had to
revise 200 words, then performed under
pressure in front of an audience of other
competitors and their teachers.
The boys were up against 36 competitors from
across England and enjoyed the experience.
This was a fantastic achievement and Joseph
and Poom are to be congratulated.
They were accompanied to Cambridge by
Miss Collinson and found time during the day
to have a look around this famous city.

ST BART’S FILM MAKERS ARE THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE On Tuesday 7 July, three teams of
film-makers from the St Bart’s
Cineclub were invited to the annual
Silver Star awards event at
London’s prestigious BFI Southbank venue.
Zombie shocker ‘Apocalyptic’ was shortlisted
for best film and best homage, while invasion
thriller ‘The Last’, was a nomination for the
secondary Jury Prize. The highlight of the
ceremony, however, was when assassin battler
‘Hitman’ won the People’s Vote award, a
well-deserved recognition of the work put into
it by its cast and creative team: Hasan
Sheperia, Matt King, Ben Stillman and Oliver
Gyorffy.
‘Apocalyptic’ was made by Hannah Money,
David Brind, Sasha Howgate, Corin Dockley,
Tom Lamden and Kyle Smith. ‘The Last’ was
a third production by Marc Jenner, Lewis
Beechey, Stephen Chooi and Joseph
Hennessey, whose Lantern Parade
documentary can currently be seen on the
Corn Exchange website. Harry Murphy and
James Owens joined the crew for this film.
The event was something of a day out for
West Berkshire schools, with Trinity and
St Gabriel’s winning prizes, and Brightwalton
also shortlisted. This is due in no small part to
the invaluable support from the Corn
Exchange’s Learning and Participation
manager, Sarah Gregson.
Cineclub runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
after school in C013. It is open to students in
all year groups, and free to join. We intend to
win more prizes next year!

SECOND HAND UNIFORM The increasingly popular PA
second-hand uniform shop has
been doing good business recently,
raising nearly £1000 in the last
month through sales at the Year 6
House welcome evenings, the fete, and the
usual Friday afternoons. All the money goes
directly into the PA fund to be spent on the
school.
The trouble is that with all those sales our
stocks are running low! Please help refill the
shelves by donating any unwanted uniform
and PE kit so that we can continue to recycle
and reuse, while raising useful money for the
school. Clothes in any reasonable condition
are very welcome. Please leave them in a
clearly marked bag at the school reception
desk.
The shop is open every Friday in term time
from 3.00pm to 3.45pm, just inside the
community entrance.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS The school has received news that
former student, Will Dace, has been awarded a
First in his Medicine Degree at Oxford. Many
congratulations to Will.

FALKLANDS LIBERATION CAKE SALE
On Friday 13 June 8P1 held their second
record breaking cake sale. The cake sale is
done on the nearest day to 14 June which is
Liberation Day in the Falkland Islands where
8P1’s tutor, Mr Zuvic, hails from. Liberation
Day is an important day as it marks the end of
Argentine occupation when British forces
restored the freedom to the islanders during
the Falklands War in 1982.

The cake sale was
much anticipated
after the success of last year’s and the students
of 8P1 delivered yet again. The standard of
baking was high with luxury cakes decorated
with penguins and
the Union Jack.

The cake sale was planned and executed with
military precision. It was great to see the
whole tutor group involved with two mobile
cake selling teams and two static teams
offering a choice of beautifully presented
luxury and budget cakes in the hub. £189.59
was raised for the Patterson House charity and
not a single cake was left! An incredible
achievement for the young bakers of 8P1. Can
we beat this total next year?

ENTREPRENEURS OF THE FUTURE Many congratulations to Fiona Paus (9P1) and
Rachael Coombs (9P3) on becoming the
winners of CULTIVATE!
As reported in the spring edition of the
Enterprise Bulletin we had three teams who
successfully went through to the final of this
new Education Business Partnership
competition held at Bayer on 3 July. After
regular meetings with business mentors who
provided them with invaluable advice and
support, all three teams presented their
businesses to the panel of judges. Our
students were up against teams from other
schools and organisations including the Corn
Exchange, Kennet, Chiltern Edge and Prospect
and we were absolutely delighted to learn of
Fiona and Rachael’s success.
As winners they were awarded a cheque for
£500 towards the further development of their
business – tie dye T shirts - which they have
been successfully selling since coming up with
the idea for the St Bart’s own Year 9
Apprentice Challenge run during Global
Entrepreneurship Week back in November. A
fantastic achievement! A full report will
appear in the end of term edition of the
Enterprise Bulletin.

CONFERENCE AT DOUAI ABBEY On the 3
July we travelled to Douai Abbey,
situated just outside of Bucklebury, for a
political and sociological conference for
Year 12 students . Just short of 20 students
from our school attended the conference which
was titled ‘Is Democracy in Crisis?’ The
primary objective of the conference was to
allow us students to further our understanding
of the political world in a context outside of
examination boundaries; which was obviously
very appealing.
While at the Abbey we received topical
lectures from several speakers, including a
former UK Ambassador to Thailand and local
MP Richard Benyon. However, it was not
simply a case of us sitting back and listening
to others talk about how democracy was
failing around the world, we were required to
partake in a couple of activities ourselves. The
first activity involved us researching and
preparing a presentation on a given country.
For this task we split off into small groups and
carried out a process of information collection
on our country and then relayed our new found
knowledge to the rest of the group. The group
as a whole then discussed whether there was
indeed a crisis in democracy or rather then
issue was being exaggerated.
After this we had a couple more talks from
visitors and were then asked to split off into
our groups again. Once in our groups we were
faced with the task of creating the ideal state,
and then to contrast this with the countries we
had learnt about earlier on in the conference.
Shortly after all the groups had discussed and
drawn up plans for their new state we came
back together to discuss what each of us had
decided upon. Again this allowed for us all to
further our understanding of topics we had not
necessarily had prior knowledge of. It enabled
sociology and politics students to debate topics
which one another may not have previously
acknowledged.
The trip itself lasted a couple of days and we
were all provided with accommodation and
food. The Abbey was an ideal setting for the
conference and allowed for a relaxed but
productive couple of days. Overall the trip was
a real success with both students and teachers
thoroughly enjoying their time at the Abbey; a
lot was learnt and good discussions were had.
