A comprehensive look

at the armed conflicts that

have shaped our civilizations

and our lives.

The Atlas of Military HistoryAn Around-the-World Survey of Warfare Through the Agesby Amanda Lomazoff with Aaron Ralby

The components of war are familiar to us all, but it’s often hard to understand how these battles throughout history continue to affect us today. The story of our world, from its earliest beginnings thousands of years BCE to today, is often the story of our conflicts. The Atlas of Military History offers a fascinating look at the many wars that have been fought over land, independence, and other factors all over the globe. Organized into sections based on location and then in chronological order, this compendium covers everything from the Punic Wars in Carthage that began in 247 BCE, to the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, to World War II, to the recent Arab Spring. Full-color photos and maps, as well as highlighted sections on legendary leaders, battles, and weapons, are included.

• The Atlas of Military History covers everything from prehistoric warfare to the wars of recent history.

• The book includes a glossary, resources for further reference, and an index.

Archeryby Rick Sapp

No one knows when the first bow and arrow appeared, but it’s safe to say that men and women have been using the archery complex —bow, string, arrow, fletching, and arrowhead —for at least 20,000 years. Used to provide both food and protection, the bow and arrow has always been an interesting and effective weapon. From the stick bow to the crossbow, Archery showcases the many types of methods and tools used in this fascinating discipline. A comprehensive history of the bow and arrow, along with the full-color images in this lively compendium, will enthrall expert and novice collectors alike. Today’s archers will learn about the world’s first fighting tools, like the atlatl, or Australian spear, and the especially destructive iron-tipped arrows used by the men of classical civilizations. In addition, they’ll refresh their knowledge of today’s archery arsenal, including excalibur crossbows and parker bows. Archery is a complete look at a field that has fascinated us since ancient times.

• Discover the history and evolution of archery in this stunning photographic history.

• Archery is an oversized book filled with 200 full-color images.

Swords and Hilt Weapons by Michael Sharpe

Swords and other weapons with handles, or hilt weapons, were originally designed for use in melee, or confused fighting, where combatants were little more than an arm’s length apart. Wars are now often fought over much larger distances with much more elaborate methods, but for thousands of years swords, knives, daggers, machetes, axes, and other blades were the weapons of choice in any conflict. Even today, infantrymen carry some sort of knife into battle. Swords and Hilt Weapons is an illustrated guide to these remarkable tools. From the simple stone knives manufactured during ancient times to today’s albion swords, it offers a complete visual history for experienced swordsmen or anyone fascinated by the beautiful construction of a steel blade. Become an expert with Swords and Hilt Weapons!

• Swords and Hilt Weapons is an oversized book filled with 200 full-color images, including legendary models.

• Fascinating text puts swords and hilt weapons into historical context and offers basic tips for safety and storage.

Puerto Rico Then and Now2nd Editionby Jorge Rigau

Discovered by Columbus in 1493, ruled by the Spanish for 400 years, and now a commonwealth of the United States, Puerto Rico has a long and diverse history that is reflected in its architecture and landmarks. For more than 250 years, Casa Blanca housed the family of Spanish conqueror Ponce de León; it is now a museum and the oldest house still standing in Old San Juan. The Luis Ramos Gonzalez Elementary School in Caguas, built in the Art Deco style during the New Deal hasn’t changed as much—it is now serving as a junior high school. In Puerto Rico Then and Now, 70 vintage black-and-white photographs from the earlier days of the commonwealth are juxtaposed with beautiful color photos taken from the same vantage points today.

• Each photo is accompanied by illuminating text that appears in both English and Spanish, making the book accessible for speakers of both languages.

• An illuminating introduction provides an overview of Puerto Rico’s history and gives readers a context for these remarkable photos.

New Jersey Then and Nowby David Veasey

Picture this: wooden piers, grand hotels, and swimmers of all ages frolicking in the surf. That was Atlantic City—then. Through the years, the boardwalk has changed, but today the casinos still draw millions of visitors each year. Now try to imagine the George Washington Bridge connecting New Jersey to New York City as it did in the 1930s. Or the vast miles of highway that make up the New Jersey Turnpike in the 1950s. Can’t picture it? With New Jersey Then and Now, time turns back right before your eyes! This fascinating photo book shows how New Jersey—from the sprawling campuses of Princeton and Rutgers Universities to the shores of Cape May—has grown and changed over the years. From Einstein’s home to the spot where the Hindenberg tragically landed on Ellis Island, the state’s newest addition, New Jersey Then and Now offers a complete look at the past and present of the Garden State!

• New Jersey Then and Now features stunning, full-color photos of 70 landmarks and sites throughout the state.

• An illuminating introduction provides a quick overview of New Jersey history and gives readers context for these remarkable photos.

Washington D.C. Then and Now 2nd Editionby Alexander D. Mitchell, IV

Two hundred years ago, a city was envisioned that would rival the architectural splendor of Athens and Paris, and be the home of its nation’s power and influence. That city was Washington, D.C., and through the years it has developed its own unique look and identity. Its most iconic buildings—the White House, the Capitol, and the monuments—share space with modern glass midrises and residential developments. Although some buildings, such as the Smithsonian’s castle, look much the same as they did in their early days, others have changed dramatically. Washington, D.C. Then and Now pairs vintage black-and-white photographs, some of which were taken by photography pioneers such as Mathew Brady, with stunning color photos taken from the same vantage points today.

• Washington, D.C. Then and Now features stunning past and present photos of 70 landmarks and sites throughout the capital.

• An illuminating introduction provides an overview of the capital’s history and gives readers a context for the remarkable photos that follow.

New York Then and Now 2nd Edition Compactby Marcia Reiss and Evan Joseph

Though always iconic, New York City’s famous skyline has changed dramatically over the years. In 2001, the tragic fall of the Twin Towers left a void in the city’s skyline. Today, the majestic Flatiron, Chrysler, and Empire State Buildings still make New York one of the most recognizable and exciting metropolises in the world. From the Statue of Liberty to Central Park, from Rockefeller Center to the South Street Seaport, the past and present photos in New York Then and Now offer a geographic and historic tour of the city’s most spectacular sights. Completely revised and updated, this compact edition offers fascinating stories about the buildings that have come and gone, and sites that have been remarkably transformed or thankfully preserved.

• This portable compact edition of New York Then and Now features stunning photos and fascinating stories of more than 70 landmarks and sites.

• An illuminating introduction provides an overview of New York history and gives readers a context for these remarkable photos.

Civil War Battlefields Then and Now2nd Edition Compactby James Campi Jr.

Documenting the rise and fall of the Confederacy during the Civil War was a new figure on the battlefield: the war photographer. It was the first major conflict to be recorded by cameras, and men such as Mathew Brady, George Barnard, Timothy O’Sullivan, and Alexander Gardner made their names by capturing unforgettable images of the death and destruction brought about by war. We have their photographs of sites such as Fort Sumter and Gettysburg in those crucial moments— but what do those sites look like today, so many years later?

• Civil War Battlefields Then and Now juxtaposes their classic images with photos of the sites as they look now. Some, like Hagerstown Pike, are remarkably well preserved, while others, like Fort Sedgwick, no longer exist.

• Arranged chronologically, Civil War Battlefields Then and Now is a fascinating look at some crucial sites in America’s history.
