Just How Many Mags From The Wannabe’s Actually Stay In Tennessee When They Sell To So Many Regional Areas?

Wow, it’s been a very busy month for us and it’s just beginning! We attended many great events in November and have been invited to attend a few Christmas parties this month and we greatly appreciate all the invites and will be at all we can. We have been attending H.O.G. Chapter meetings and will continue to all winter letting them know we want them to be more involved in the magazine, but that goes for everyone, please send us your feedback about the magazine, it’s for you the readers, so we want it to be what you want to read! We are also starting to spread some exciting news, for bikers, our advertisers, and readers. I won’t go into great detail about it, but we will introduce it in the January Issue so we will be ready to go when April gets here, but here’s the quick and dirty version. We are calling it, THE TENNESSEE THUNDER RUN! It’s a FREE RIDE N’ WIN card that you will be able to get at select establishments all over the State, then, after you have registered the card, you will be able to “Check In” at many more businesses and be eligible for drawings to win prizes. How many times have you wanted to go out for a ride and the first question is always “where are we going”? Now you can ride to places you may go regularly, or find cool places you may have never even heard of all over the state, and “check in”, to be eligible for drawings and giveaways just by giving them the number on your card, no strings attached!

So, that info is just a little gift from us to you and we will tell you all about it next month!

Speaking of gifts, December is such a special month for many of us, but too often during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season we forget the purpose of Christmas.

In the past our family has always given gifts and this was nice but as I’ve gotten older I look back and think of how much time we have wasted on giving gifts. If you think about it, giving gifts is a substitute for talking to one another, learning about that family member you don’t see during the year except at Christmas. Giving gifts should be something from the heart; like making something. It shouldn’t be about worrying what to buy that uncle or cousin who has everything. If your family is like ours; we’ve gone to buying gift cards. That’s so crazy. If I give you a gift card and in return you’ve given me one....what’s the point? Why can’t Christmas be about the birth of our Lord? What’s wrong with reading the story in the bible, sing Christmas carols and just spend time together? I say all this, but still, I will buy everyone on my list something, but I love it, it’s about the only time that I buy for friends and family, but it does come from the heart. This Christmas, I just want everyone to be happy and enjoy being together. I want to sit around the table, eat, talk, play board games (now I’m showing my age), and laugh, lots of laughs. I want to enjoy the lights and beautiful ornaments on the tree, sit by the fireplace with a good book (or magazine :) listen to Christmas music, and sip on a glass of wine, when I can. One of my favorite things to do, is get in the car, put my favorite Christmas CD in and ride around looking at all the houses decorated with lights. We always did that every year when I was growing up, and when our kids were younger we carried on the tradition. There was a house in East Nashville that was all decked out every year and the owners would dress up as Mr. & Mrs. Claus and sit in their driveway, pass out candy and let the kids get their pic made with them. Our kids were always so excited, because we knew Mr. & Mrs. Claus, so when our kids got out of the car, Santa called them by name, it was magical for them! I’m also hoping for a white Christmas, sorry if you don’t like snow, but I do, and I wish every year to wake up to a winter wonderland Christmas morning. It doesn’t happen often here, but maybe I’ll get my wish this year!

“The Case For Grace”Like a good lawyer, I intend to prove my case with infallible proof from the word of God, but in the process I will come against some things religion has taught you concerning “the law & Grace.”

I’ll have to “detoxify” your stinking thinking and come against traditional beliefs.

Eph. 2:8 “For by Grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God…Not of works.” According to this word, your self effort, self performance will not get you into heaven. Going to Church, singing in the choir, volunteering your services at church, giving of your money will not save you (but this is what saved people do). Adultery, stealing, addictions, homosexual life styles will not send you to hell. The rejection of Jesus Christ alone will send you to hell. When the Old Testament Jews came to Christianity, the religious Jews would tell the new Christians if they were going to be a Christians they still had to keep the Law of Moses. The same thing is still happening today, so many Christian religions are ministering the Law and Grace Message. The Apostle Paul warned them and us today against this teaching and called it “A perverted gospel.”

Gal.5 1-7 “Stand fast in the liberty (freedom) wherewith Christ has made us free (from the law) and not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage (the law). If ye be circumcised (the law) Christ shall profit you nothing… Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law:” This is why the modern day church is so weak and it is just not working, they are mixing the Law and Grace along with their traditions and “making the word of God of no effect.”

Jesus died on the cross for all sins, past, present, and future, you were not alive when Jesus died on the cross, so He died for future sins. If you are truly a Christian, God has forgiven for all your sins, past, present, and future. This doesn’t give you the right to sin, “God Forbid.” Religion and tradition tells us that “we are sinners saved by Grace,” that sounds wonderful but it is biblically impossible: you cannot be both, you are either a “sinner” or you are “saved by Grace.” If you

are truly a Christian, you might sin, but you’re not a sinner. If you’re not a Christian, you may do all the good in the world, but you’re still a sinner.

Heb.8:12 “…their sins & iniquities I will remember no more.” Jesus calls us “sanctified, holy, perfect, and righteous.” The bible also tells Christians that “we are IN him,” if we are in Him and He is in us, and He sits on the right hand of the Father in Heaven, we know there is no sin in Jesus, so we that are truly “born again Christians” cannot be sinners. If we understood our real identity, who God’s word says we are and not who the world says we are, we could live the way God intended for us to. The Law only brings condemnation, guilt, and shame because we can never measure up to it. The Law only drives you to sin. These religions with the “hate messages” get so caught up in legalism and living miserable lives and judging others that they have missed the greatest gift of all, God’s Grace. Don’t let legalism define who you are by your mistakes, but let God define who you are through His Grace. Keep reminding yourself: “I am the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus,” and watch your life change! Until next time, keep your face in the wind and your kickstand up.

BRIOCHE ENCRUSTED CHRISTMAS HAM (French meaning for “rich bread covering”)*inspired by Mario Batali on abc’s The Chew, but modified by MaMa Thunder, for simplicity. Score the ham. This means you make shallow cutsin a criss-cross pattern, all over entire top and sides of ham. Make sure ham has set out a full hour and room temp. & on a big platter. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. 1 7 to 10 Pound Boneless, Smoked Ham1 Tube of Pre-done Pastry Dough (thawed, but chilled)1 Bottle of powdered Clove Seasoning1 Can of your fave juice that you feel pairs best w/ Ham; Pear juice, Apple Cider, Mango, Pineapple.....whatevva’. 1 Tbls. of powdered Cinnamon 1 Smaller Bottle of Apricot Preserves (quality brand)1/2 Level teaspoon of Red Pepper Flakes2 Beaten Eggs 1/2 Stick of Real Butter; melted by microwave1 Heavy Aluminum, Square shaped, throw away, “turkey or big-ass ham” pan. Buy cheap @ WallyWorld. Mix up your clove powder and cinnamon powder together.After you’ve scored your ham, pour your juice preferenceall over ham and make sure it’s down in all the little checker-board crevices you’ve scored. Now take your clove & cinnamon mix and put some in your hands and sprinkle all over ham, making sure you get some down in every single crevice. If you need more, make up another batch of it; only takes a sec. Now, just let it set while you prepare the dough. Now, you can go to The Chew and make your own authentic Brioche dough if you’re skilled in “scratch” pie crusts, etc., but throw some flour down on your counter, pop open tube of dough and lay it out, throw some flour on your rolling pin and just start rolling out until it’s big enough cover the entire ham (just eyeball it), but don’t get dough so thin it will split open the sec you start to cover ham with it. Pour your Apricot Preserve into a small bowl and mix in your Red Pepper Flakes. Gently smear this all over top & sides of ham. Remove from platter and dry the bottom of ham good so not leaking. Place ham in middle of rolled-out dough. Very Gently bring all 4 sides up to the top and just take the dough and twist into a little knot on top and pat down. Take Egg Wash (combined melted butter & beaten eggs) and brush All Over entire dough, even up underneath. Place on rack that is placed in aluminum pan. As soon as you put in oven, turn oven down to 350 degrees. Bake for 2 hours. If it looks like it’s getting too brown towards the end, then

make an aluminum foil V-tent and tent the ham so that it comes out golden brown and not dark brown. Remove from oven, brush all over with melted butter & must cool for full 15 minutes. If possible when cutting, use a serrated electric knife. If not electric, use a very sharp serrated knife. Make up another batch of Apricot Preserves w/ Red Pepper flakes only melt down on stove top and use as a gravy. Perfection!

SUPER E-Z“Gourmet” GARLIC MASHED TATERS1 Tub of Bob Evans Creamy Mashed Potatoes1 Tub of Bob Evans Sour Cream n’ Chive Potatoes1 Small Tub of Premium brand Sour Cream1 Small Tub of Premium brand Whipped Philly Cream Cheese (room temp)1 Medium Garlic Bulb; cut off ends, place in alum. foil, seal tight, cook in 425 oven for 40 minutes and then mush it down blend into potato mixture.1 Pound of Gourmet Cheese; your favorite; Gruyere (pro-nounced Gre-air), Real Mozzarella (from Deli), Real Parmi-giano Reggiano, Crumbled Bleu Cheese, Fontina or Pecorino, all excellent for this dish. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take a large casserole dish and spray with quality butter spray or wipe down with Premium EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) Blend your 2 potatoes together in one bowl while mixing in the sour cream & the whipped cream cheese. Add a dash of Nutmeg and salt & pepper to taste. Spoon potatoes in 1st, then a layer of cheese of choice, then more potato mix, cheese, potatoes, cheese; all the way up to the top and you should end up with cheese on top of all your layers. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. Remove from oven and sprinkle chives all over top. Serve asap. E-Z Divine!

SIMPLE CLASSIC BAKED BRIE w/ PRESERVESPreheat oven to 400 degrees. 1 Pound of Brie Cheese1 Tube of Pastry Dough; flour counter & gently lay out. Take a pizza wheel & cut 3 even lines straight down and 2 lines across to form perfect squares. 1 Jar of Your Favorite Preserves; add nutmeg or cinnamon or even a little spice; spice & sweet is good. Use pastry dough still chilled; easier to handle. Lay on floured counter like a triangle. Whip your Brie up fluffy. Take a teaspoon and plop a dollop of Preserves, then a dollop of Brie on top; smoosh to even out. Fold triangle over; wet edges w/ warm water just a tad, take fork and run all along both sides to seam it up. Brush w/ egg wash, bake golden brown, brush w/but-ter when take out & sprinkle w/ confectioners’ sugar......sugar. Serve piping hot w/ whipped cream.

On October 25th, Santa (aka Steve Welch) and Mrs. Clause (aka Stacie Ludford) led around 700 bikes in the 20th Annual Boswell’s Toy Parade. The Boswell HOG Chapters turned out in mass to provide the man (and lady) power to put on the event. All riders were welcome to attend. Our friend Pastor Ron brought quite a few members of his Motorcycle Ministry and members of various clubs to participate. The HOG ladies put together a bake sale, each showcasing their best goodies, chased down by hot coffee. The police officers sold special Christmas Charities t-shirts. Excluding the shirt sales, the day brought in over $10,000 and a truckload of toys. The upcoming road blocks, to be manned by the Boswell HOGs and their friends from other clubs, are expected to raise another $40,000. This amount will help fund the Police Christmas Basket Program, Shop With A Cop and the Andrew Jackson Youth Camp. The ride started at Centennial Park, proceeded down West End, Second Avenue, by the Titan’s Stadium, and ended at Boswell’s Fesslers Lane for music, food, and beverages. Ya gotta admit it’s pretty neat to run all the red lights on West End and wave at the crowds.

TOY PARADE


The Christmas Basket Program provides several food baskets, plus toys, for each needy family, selected by officers in their sectors. The HOGs assist officers in the delivery of the baskets, on Christmas Eve morning. The HOGs will tell you that when you see the condition of the families helped, you will be moved to work even harder next year. In addition to needy families, some of the food is delivered to the elderly. The recipients do not receive any help from other Christmas programs. On October 15th the HOGs were treated to BBQ, by the police officers, at the old Tennessee State Prison, as a thank you for their last year’s efforts on behalf of the charity.The Andrew Jackson Youth Camp is staffed by police officers. Deserving boys and girls are given the opportunity to go to summer camp under this program. The kids play sports, swim, are fed well, and learn responsibility, under the watchful eyes of compassionate officers. It’s a special day, when the SWAT Team, police helicopter, canine unit, and mounted patrol, visit the campers. The canine demonstration quickly convinced me, that I’d quickly give up when I heard the dogs arrive! On the last day of camp, the officers don their uniforms for the first time. One past camper went on to become


an officer. Others greet their officer buddies when they see them near their homes, and even report neighbors for crimes. This camp has saved many kids that would have, otherwise, lived a life of crime.The Shop With A Cop Program takes the campers shopping for Christmas presents. They can spend the allowed amount on themselves, their families, or even friends. This is usually the only Christmas these kids have.Like most charities supported by bikers, these efforts help children. Ya think it could be because we never grow up ourselves? Boswell’s Turns 65!On November 1, 2014, Boswell’s Harley-Davidson celebrated its 65th Anniversary as a Harley dealer. They invited their H.O.G. members, from all 4 chapters, to join the staff in the celebration. It all started, in 1948, when Lannie Boswell and his brother Otis opened a gas station in their hometown of Henderson, KY. A year later, they signed a contract to become Boswell’s Harley-Davidson and moved to a new building in Henderson. Lannie’s business was interrupted by a tour of duty in the Army during 1950-52, including a year in Germany. After returning to Henderson, the future Mrs. Boswell rode in to the dealership for a service on her bike. After a slow start (Mr. B stood up the future Mrs. B on their first date to go to a bike race), the two apparently hit it off and married in August of 1953. Quite a tribute to Mrs. B for putting up with Lannie for about 61 years!The brothers took different routes with Otis moving to open a dealership in Owensboro, in 1955 and later, in 1959, Lannie bought out Eddie Conley’s dealership in Evansville. In 1965, the Bowell’s, with 4 kids, packed up to open Boswell’s Harley-Davidson, on Lafayette Street, in Nashville, before moving to the Fesslers Lane location, in 1971. The rest, as they say is history, with new locations opening in Rivergate, Cookeville, and Second Avenue.Over the years, there have been some really tough times for Harley dealerships, especially during the AMF years. Lots of dealers came and went, but the Boswells were able to maintain their customer base. Lannie even established the Music City Riders club, years before Harley established its H.O.G. program. Bubba has taken over management of the operation, with much help from wife, Betsy, and son, Kyle. Bubba’s sisters moved on to other endeavors, while Mr. B. continues to run Boswell’s Golf Cars.Mr. B is still a really great guy at 88 years old and is one of my favorite people. Renee Bond, has been riding bikes all her life, so it felt right when she started working at Krooner’s in Lebanon, TN. She began working in the warehouse, doing shipping and receiving and she really enjoyed the job, but more than that she was getting experience in the motorcycle industry. Soon, she started building rolling chassis, and she loved building them, so she decided to build her own bike “Pink Trash” at about that time. After Krooner’s closed, she helped start, and run, Mid-Tenn Cycles. It was a small shop and she mostly sold eBay products back when someone could make some money on eBay. After she left there, she did some odd jobs until she figured out what she wanted to do, but she knew she missed the motorcycle industry, and the people. She still had a huge following that wanted her to get back to selling parts, so after a lot of prayers, she decided to take a leap of faith, and open her own shop. There were a few setbacks at first, and she started feeling that this was not the best choice she could have made for herself, so she sold that shop and opened “LOW KEY CYCLES”.

Renee wanted to get out of service, because of all the headaches and trouble one can have with it, so she started the new business as a parts shop. She called it “Low Key Cycles” because that’s exactly what she wanted it to be, low key, and to just keep selling parts to all the international customers that had been following her since Krooner’s closed, and to all of her loyal local


customers too. She had one customer in particular, that gave her HOPE and FAITH that her new business would do well. Anders Jonnson, was a loyal customer in Sweden, and he had always supported her, and encouraged her to continue. They became as close as her family here, so now… she felt as if she had family there in Sweden. Low Key Cycles didn’t stay low key very long! Renee continued selling parts for 4 years, and enjoyed running her small business, but she really wasn’t going anywhere, she was doing just enough to keep herself financially stable. Renee met Robert Buttrey in March of 2013. He came in to the shop as a customer, to check it out, and started buying parts from her. They quickly became really good friends. Robert has a lot of knowledge and experience working on motorcycles, and he saw that she was struggling, running a bike shop, while also keeping books for 5 different corporations in town, and doing taxes for individuals during tax time. She was exhausted from all the work, but was doing what she had to do to make ends meet. Robert had asked many times about buying into the shop, but she never took him seriously. Finally, one morning, after feeling like she was just going in circles and not making any plans for her long time future, Renee decided to take him up on his offer. Working in this industry is a passion, not a job, but with so many others selling dirt cheap on eBay from their homes, it was really hard to continue to compete. So in April 2014, Renee and Robert became partners, and began to look for a bigger building to move into. They found what they felt was the perfect set up. It didn’t happen very quickly, but in time they had the building ready to go. They moved in the middle of June 2014

and started with Robert and one other mechanic, and they began servicing Harleys, Metrics, 4 wheelers, and dirt bikes.They were slammed right from the start and stayed that way, so about the first of October, they decided to plan a huge Grand Opening, to give back to all their customers, and to have a day filled with giveaways, and free everything! It was cold, but there was a great turnout considering it wasn’t the best riding weather. There was live music with Skipper Grace, free food and drinks, giveaways every 30 minutes, a drawing for a set of tires, and a Bike Show! It was a great event, and everyone had a good time and we really appreciate their hospitality. They plan on having rides and other events every month in 2015, so this was also a big farewell to 2014 party! Since they started, they have grown, and now have 3 mechanics and 3 lifts, and pretty much keep them full all the time. Because of the growing new parts business, they also have a huge take-off parts area for those looking for a good deal. They are continuing to build up their inventory to try and serve all their customers with the latest products. Renee can’t say she isn’t nervous about such a big move, but she does have high hopes that they will be blessed tremendously in this endeavor. She still does books and taxes, but has her mother helping with those now until she is able to give them up totally (joking). This rally has grown to a huge rally! Not only were there an approximate 400,000 attendees, it’s spread out over many miles and many locations and venues. That’s one of the original things about it! But BBBQ hangs its’ hat on the fact that it is the largest charity rally in the nation. Now that’s something to brag about! Since 2000, the rally has donated over $600,000 to local charities of NorthWest Arkan-sas area. Not only are funds raised through monies collected at the rally, but the rally may not be pos-sible without the local charities “working” the rally from set up to striking the location, donated space to promote their charities, breakfast locations, their own events and more. It’s truly an amazing thing to see from start to finish. We got to see more and be more involved in the process this year as we were the proud publisher’s of the first ever Official BBBQ Rally Guide and on-line GPS locator. As for the rally, we had a blast in the National Thunder Roads Maga-zine Booth as our National Founders brought in Thunder Pete for the big show. Thank you to all who stopped in to say Hello to us at Baum Motorcycle Village on the South side of Fayette-ville. It was great to see folks from all over the United States stopping in to

grab up magazines from over 22 states! There were some who were thrilled to have the latest copy of their next riding destination state. In addition to the TRM booth, “The Baum” area was filled with big vendor trucks, food trucks, product representatives, demo rides, helicopter rides and more. Many look-ing for motorcycle upgrades, products, etc, were able to find all they needed there.

Dickson Street is where it all started or so the legend goes. This is simply a stretch of city roadway which goes way down a long hill with about a 50 degree slope and back up the other side. Highlights of this venue are the Parade of Power Saturday af-ternoon which passed by the crowded sidewalks


and the exhilaration of the extreme downhill and uphill grade. The vendor booths packed the nearby parking lots. The bars were filled with laughter and music. The Barbeque Trailers and the Main Stage with bands daily in the Beer Garden at the “hollar” as we call it or bottom of the hill! One of “T”s favorite things about this rally is the Stokes Air “Battle of the Bikes” presented by Nab-holz Construction where YOU pick the winner! She had a great time sharing the mic a bit with Laramie the wild and crazy MC of this bike show. It’s by all means the best bike show in the Nation! “T” and friends were housed at Washington County Fairgrounds Saloon and Campgrounds in Fayetteville this year. This is the official campground of the rally. Some of the craziest fun goes on in the Fairgrounds! For the biggest gathering of bar-b-q, the fairgrounds hosts the Bar-b-q cook off! Yummy! They also had the hilarious Hambone Express Pig Races, exhilarat-ing Helicopter Rides, Lawn Mower Pulls, a Karaoke Contest and more. This is the place for a little wilder escapade to the rally, but yet still family friendly.

Pig Trail Harley-Davidson, in Rogers AR played a large part in pulling some of the record crowd to a second location. Large vendors of motorcycle prod-ucts, apparel, builders, food and more filled the park-ing lot of Pig Trail Harley-Davidson. Entertainment, Free Bikini Bike Wash, Beer Garden, Bud Girls, Live Music were but a small portion of what could be found there. We where honored to meet Michele Smith of Two Wheel Thunder! “T” also got the opportunity to host the Steel Horse Sisterhood reception at this lo-cation on Thursday afternoon. It was great to see and meet sisters from across the U.S.

After some serious level 5 rides on the nearby highways and byways such as the Pig Trail Scenic ride, Hwy 23, Hwy 21, Hwy 16, Hwy 45 and the list goes on and on, we had done it all! The roads brought the riders to the rally and the rally brought the fun to the roads! All in all, this year’s 15th anniversary rally was the best one yet! If you’ve not attended this rally, please do so in the future. Next year will be held on September 23-26, 2015. We will see you there!

Just give it a urine sample and the computer will tell you what’s wrong and what to do about it.It takes ten seconds and only costs ten bucks. Helluva’ lot cheaper than a doctor.’So, Bubba deposits a urine sample in a small jar and takes it to Smart-Mart.He deposits ten dollars, and the computer lights up and asks for the urine sample. It will improve in two weeks. Thank you for shop-ping @ Smart-Mart.’That evening, while thinking how amazing this new technology was, Bubba began wondering if the computer could be fooled.He mixed some tap water, a stool sample from his dog, urine samples from his wife and daughter, and a sperm sample for good measure.Bubba hurries back to Smart-Mart, eager to check the results. He deposits ten dollars, pours in his concoction, and awaits the results.The computer prints the following:1. Your tap water is too hard. Get a water softener. (Aisle 9)2. Your dog has ringworm. MOTORCYCLISTS GAIN SOME RELIEF FROM CONGRESSIONAL HELMET LAW EFFORTS

Driven by discontent, disillusionment and distrust, American voters saw red in November’s mid-term elections and whisked control of the Unites States Senate to the first Republican majority since 2006 and won additional seats in the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives, as well as favoring the GOP in numerous statewide races and a majority of gubernatorial contests nationwide.While most of the electorate is simply happy to see an end to a record $4 billion in campaign ads appearing incessantly on television, radio and newspapers, and in in-boxes and mailboxes everywhere, motorcycle riders should be especially glad to have won at least a temporary respite from helmet law threats from Congress and in states where Republicans have remained or gained in governance.As recently as this summer, the Obama Administration included a thinly-veiled attempt to impose a national helmet law through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) surface transportation reauthorization proposal to Congress, but the measure was derailed by the Republican-controlled House. Three years ago, motorcyclists across America successfully opposed a proposed amendment to S.1449, the “Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Improvement Act of 2011,” that would have called for a National Mandatory Helmet Law for all motorcyclists.Although federal agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will undoubtedly continue to advance their pro-helmet law agendas, lacking a Democrat majority in either chamber will likely curb enthusiasm for helmet law mandates from Washington, for now. PAY-TO-PLAY HELMET LAW PROPOSED IN NEW MEXICOIn a unique scheme to punish motorcyclists for exercising their right to ride without a helmet, a Discussion Draft of a Senate bill proposed for the 2015 52nd Legislature for the state of New Mexico would create a system of taxation for riders who opt not to wear a helmet.Specifically, “The department [Motor Vehicles Division] shall make available distinctive motorcycle validation stickers that signify that any person age eighteen or older who operates a motorcycle on which that sticker is affixed are not required by law to wear a safety helmet. The department shall issue validation sticker when a qualifying person pays the fee as provided for.”A standard validation sticker is just $15 annually, but it would cost $692 per year for the “distinctive motorcycle validating sticker” that allows the rider to go lidless…the additional

tax revenue to be distributed as follows: $541.60 to the trauma system fund, $135.40 to the brain injury services fund, and $15 as additionally provided by law. Otherwise, the rider and passengers must wear a helmet, even though New Mexico law currently does not require helmet use for those 18 and older.“My concern is this will turn into a helmet law in New Mexico,” said Annette Torrez, chairperson for the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) and a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors, who reported on the effort at a recent NCOM Regional Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. “We found out that a lobbyist in New Mexico asked a senator to draft the bill, and though it does not have a sponsor yet, we are currently researching who is behind it.”

TEXAS SAYS NO POLARIS SLINGSHOTSThe Polaris Slingshot, a brand new three-wheeled sports-vehicle now just arriving at dealerships across the U.S., lacks componentry necessary to be considered “a car” and in most states you register it as a motorcycle; but the Texas DMV says “Whoa pardner, not so fast.”Though Polaris says they’d already received approval from the Lone Star State to sell their Slingshot there, according to a letter to Texas Polaris dealers posted on a Slingshot forum on November 4th they were notified by the Vehicle Titling and Registration Division of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles that the DMV is taking the position that even if dealers are licensed to sell it as a motorcycle, owners of the Slingshot will not be able to register it because it is not street legal as far as Texas “motorcycles” are concerned.The conflict hinges on the wording used to define a motorcycle in Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety Motorcycle Operator’s Manual says three-wheelers are defined by certain characteristics, one of them being “saddle seating,” meaning “seating in which the rider/passenger straddles the vehicle,” but the Slingshot’s seats sit side-by-side. Because it doesn’t have a “saddle,” the DMV ruling prohibits the Polaris Slingshot from being registered as a motorcycle, so they will not be sold in the state until this “VERY urgent matter” is resolved.The Texas precedence has the potential to sway other states to define the Slingshot similarly, a scenario Polaris is surely hoping to avoid.Polaris has fought hard for their not-car classification, and have used the fact that their vehicles are legally considered motorcycles to ease their passage through regulatory waters, but this gray area has led to some other unintended legal consequences, such as operator licensing, vehicle registration and applicable helmet requirements. Ultimately, it has everything to do with the way laws are written and how “motorcycle” is defined therein, which varies from state to state.

Indiana officials are warning motor scooter drivers that starting in January they’ll need license plates on those bikes. Legislators have approved Indiana’s first license requirements for scooters, and under the new law drivers of scooters with engines of 50 cubic centimeters or less will need to buy license plates and pass a Bureau of Motor Vehicles test involving road signals and signs. Operators of scooters with larger engines will be required to follow motorcycle requirements, including holding a valid motorcycle license or learner’s permit.Evansville police officials told a legislative committee that scooters had often been involved in accidents and used in crimes such as robberies, but that the owners couldn’t be found because they lacked any registration.The new law doesn’t require insurance for drivers of the smaller scooters, and the registration will cost $26.35, plus a $10 excise tax.Law sponsor Rep. Dave Wolkins (R-Winona Lake) said not requiring a driver’s license for scooter operators was important because he felt it was necessary that those with drunken driving convictions still have a way to get to work.

MINIBIKE MANUFACTURER TO PAY RECORD $4.3 MILLION FEDERAL FINE

Baja Inc. of Anderson, South Carolina, has agreed to pay a record $4.3 million civil penalty to settle a complaint from federal regulators that it delayed reporting safety defects on its go-karts and minibikes, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported.The settlement resolves CPSC charges that the firm knowingly failed to report within 24 hours, as required by federal law, known defects and an unreasonable risk of serious injury involving 11 models of minibikes and go-carts sold nationwide

from November 2004 through June 2010.The defects in Baja’s products, which consisted of fuel leaks and unintended acceleration, resulted in the recall in 2010 of 308,000 Baja Motorsports minibikes and go-karts, which is when Baja filed its Full Report with CPSC.Although the company agreed to pay the fine, it did not admit any wrongdoing and said it was paying to “avoid the cost, distraction, delay and uncertainty” of continued proceedings.Previously, the highest penalty the safety commission had issued was a $4 million fine against Graco Children’s Products in 2005 for failure to inform CPSC about dangers to children.

LANE FILTERING APPROVED DOWN UNDERFollowing consultation with riders, motorists and road safety groups, the government of Queensland, Australia decided to make changes to the laws regarding motorcycle riding, and beginning early next year motorcyclists will now be able to move around stationary or slow moving vehicles, as long as they are travelling less than 30 kilometres an hour (18.64 mph).A trial in New South Wales found lane filtering could help ease traffic congestion and Transport Minister Scott Emerson agreed it should be rolled out in Queensland, but it will only be allowed for experienced riders and won’t be allowed in school zones during school hours.Among other “sensible changes,” motorcyclists will also now be able to legally stretch their leg off the bike to help avoid fatigue, take both feet off the footsteps to reverse into a parking space and turn their head to do a shoulder check. Dear Fellow Veterans and Patriots of Tennessee:

You may find it out of sync that during the season of Santa Claus and flying reindeer I delve into reality and the dynamics of personal perception but that’s where we’re going. I’m reminded of Forrest Gump! You know – “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get…!” I guess perception and reality are a little like Christmas presents. A box with shiny wrapping paper; As you unwrap it, your mind races to figure out what’s in it. You imagine it’s the one thing you’ve wished for. Your mind goes in a thousand directions but what you find is something from Aunt Nell you never thought of or much less wanted. How do you deal with it?

I am troubled by the level of chaos and turmoil many of our veterans are going through these days. There has always been a certain amount of chaos and turmoil for veterans, especially those who have experienced the heat of battle many times. But, how do we explain service members who’ve not been in combat committing suicide?

Is our ability to handle potential threats to our life or personal injury related to the environment we grow up in and the resulting approach we have to life? There was a time when living to your 40’s was considered a good run. Today we expect to live into our 70’s, 80’s or 90’s. When life expectancy was shorter I think it is safe to say life was harder. People lived a long way away from the doctor, communication was not fast, food had to be harvested or killed, wood had to be chopped, animals taken care of and there wasn’t a cop to respond immediately if you were under threat.

If you didn’t take care of it or make it happen you suffered the

result. Is it possible that people who grew

up more than 60 years ago just expected that they would suffer pain,

work hard and die young? Could the hard realities of life have seemed normal

and not exceptionally hard to them?

Today we expect to live a century and for our worn

out parts to be replaced as needed so we can do what we want and still act young in

later life. We no longer expect to suffer pain, work hard and die young. A century ago people viewed life through the prism of what they personally experienced, felt and saw. Today much of what we believe is fed to us at a distance through television, movies and game boxes. Government controls us with so many rules that people are losing their drive to take care of themselves and handle their own business. Society seems to be drifting towards more reliance on someone else to take care of their problems and insure they don’t suffer the result of their poor actions or bad decisions. Does this make trivial bumps in life look like mountains?

Is the high suicide rate in our military and the number of veterans who have difficulty integrating back into American society or end up homeless on the street related to the cocoon today’s youth are raised in? What happens to the child who is told there is a boogie man behind every bush and that’s why they can’t go outside alone? What about the child who never puts much effort into school work, gets marginal grades but is passed up through grades anyway? What about those who get a awards for participation but never have to be number one to get a trophy? Would you rather have a child that never knows what it’s like to have his esteem damaged or have a child who had to earn his esteem and deal with the bruises of real life? Who becomes the more capable adult?

What’s the result when you are shielded and told you are good as opposed to the reality of actually demonstrating you are good? I’m just asking questions but shouldn’t we all know that if we are thrown in a pile of crap we can pick up our feet and walk out of it? Do we have the same confidence in self-reliance our grandparents had? Don’t you think we are better people if we experience and learn to deal with stress? The Stress of life is no big deal if you are experienced at dealing with it and you are confident in yourself. Merry Christmas?

Keep the faith. Thank a vet for the freedoms we still enjoy and support politicians who will bring back the ones we’ve lost. Fly the flag of the people and be proud you’re an American. Hug the families of those still missing because their quest for closure has not ended. Live the good life and ride for those can’t.
