Woodturning Classes

This month’s demonstrator has traveled over 4,700 miles to show his art form. Throughout his life, Andy Cole has admired all things made of wood. There is something about the natural and organic nature of wood that fascinates him.

Coring a nested set of natural

edge bowls

In 2000 Andy had the opportunity to learn woodturning when he took a basic bowl turning class. He went home with a lathe in his trunk and a passion for turning that lives on to this day. Andy states that every tree is unique, and no two pieces of wood are the same. Like fingerprints from heaven, are the grain lines on a piece of wood. Amazing!

A Woodturning Reunion

Have you ever experienced a combination Vacation - Family Reunion - Business Trip - Awards Ceremony, and Woodturning Festival? A few weeks ago Luelle and I spent a week in San Diego doing exactly that. My brother and brother-in-law have been infected by the Woodturning Virus and both have lathes. So, when Luelle’s annual travel agent convention was announced in San Diego, only a few miles from my brother’s home, we started planning the “Spouse’s Activities” while Luelle was in meetings all day. My brother had just completed his woodshop and purchased his first two lathes. Bro-in-law brought my “California Lathe” so all three could turn at the same time. We had some recent walnut trees that had been pulled out due to the California drought, as well as eucalyptus and manzanita to spice things up. Each day we enjoyed the fellowship and turning together, and at night I drove back to the travel convention to be Luelle’s “arm candy.” She received top awards, more free cruises, and her name tag said Presidents Club. It was fun being in the background and letting her shine. Now we have to decide on a river cruise take; tough duty, I know. One thing that was inspiring was my brother’s shop. It is located in a Eucalyptus Grove on a hillside, partially dug in, partially cantilevered with a nice wood storage and drying area underneath. The interesting thing is that he built the whole thing out of recycled and salvaged materials, most of which came with a story. But the best part was the fellowship and turning together with the family with which I had shared the woodturning virus. We do a family reunion every year, and have figured out how to include turning in our last four reunions. Can you see a family reunion like this in your family? If so, please share the stories. I am not the only crazy one… am I?

Happy Turning,

I have been an officer for about four months and would like to share some behind-the-scenes activities. If you attended the May meeting you noticed a change in venue. Due to an error in the calendar, the meeting room was double-booked. This was conveyed on the Monday before the meeting. Quickly, other locations were visited and contingency plans were started. Alternative arrangements were discussed with the fire hall. After many emails the alternative plan was finalized, with great success (at least in my opinion). Here are some other items the Officers have been working on to enhance the Club:

High-grade presenters and convenient workshops. Array of “in-house” lathes with quality chucks. New sound system (which misbehaved for Alan).

This inside look is not for praise, but to convey the officers’ desire to bring high-quality products to the Club. There will be opportunities in the near future to assist the officers with various tasks. Consider how your talents can enhance the Club.

T he May presentation dealt with a tool

which most turners tend to avoid —

the skew. Alan amazed with the ease and

smooth finish of his skew techniques.

Alan’s first creation was a tiny top (which

has a not-so-tiny price).

Alan said one of the secrets to using the

skew is to keep it at 90 degree angle to the

wood. He mentioned that each turner has

predestined a number of skids that must

occur. Alan encouraged us to keep using the skew; soon we will be done with the

skids.

In order to perfect the

skew, Alan

recommended making

wooden eggs. This

task refines the

different skew moves.

T his Thursday, June 18th, Andy Cole will be our guest demonstrator. Andy is a Hawaiian turner that CAT was able to enlist for both a demonstration on bowl

coring and a 2-day workshop on turning calabash bowls, natural edge bowls, and turning a platter with a sunny side up egg. Don’t miss these opportunities to see how to core with a McNaughton coring system and to get some hands on experience turning the Hawaiian way – it’s not too late to enroll in the workshop. If you cannot take the workshop be sure to attend this month’s demonstration and shake the shaka sign in Andy’s direction (Hawaiian hand sign for “hang loose”).

It’s not too early to consider taking a workshop on July 16 and 17 with Rudy Lopez, a photographer turned wood turner – “whether captured with a lens, or crafted on a lathe, nature becomes art.” In this workshop you will learn how to craft a bowl in a log similar to the examples (below and on the following page). We may not have something as exotic as these species, but you will learn how to properly orient your blank, position your bowl for proper balance, and use your bowl gouge to craft a finely finished surface that requires minimal sanding. In addition, Rudy will be providing a condensed version of turning a bowl on a log at our July 16

th monthly meeting. Rudy

is an entertaining and knowledgeable turner . If you want to expand your bowl repertoire, then be sure to take this workshop and be sure not to miss his demonstration.

Our annual CAT picnic is Sunday, July 26th at Edward’s Landing Pavilion. (Same

location as last year.) Capture this date on your calendars now before some other event pops up and prevents you from attending. The August monthly meeting on the 13

th will feature our annual Tips and Tricks

meeting. My hope is everyone in the Club will share something with the group. Perhaps you have taken a workshop or a class this past year and you have learned or perfected a new technique, or you maybe have stumbled on a better way to aid your turning project. These are the things that we would like to hear about. So do not be shy about sharing these tips with the Club at large. Please contact Ken Poirier, Program Director, with your tips or tricks, or both – you are encouraged to present more than one – so he can schedule the evening’s fount of knowledge.

A Symposium Not to be Missed

2016 Virginia Woodturners Symposium We know it is still early but we wanted our Virginia Clubs to know that we have committed 6 keynote demonstrators. Jimmy Clewes, Trent Bosch, Bob Rosand, Frank Penta, John Jordan, Lyle Jamieson, and Barry Gross have signed on as demonstrators. And each will be demonstrating at least three times during the symposium. But wait there is more! The symposium committee is not resting on its laurels. We are still investigating opportunities to include even more regionally known demonstrators. While we cannot name names until they actually commit, we can tell you that we are talking to well known turners in the mid-Atlantic states. Once we have commitments we will provide an update to everyone. Not only do you get to see them demonstrate, but each demonstrator is providing a “how-to” handout to go into our improved symposium book. Now you will be able to refer back to their notes when you return home. So with an outstanding lineup of demonstrators, a new and improved book, an expanded basic skills section, and more vendors, all in a larger, spread out demonstration area, this will be unlike any previous Virginia symposium. Mark your calendars to reserve the dates of November 5th & 6th, 2016 to attend the Virginia Woodturners Symposium at EXPOland in Fishersville, Virginia. We will be updating our website with 2016 information over the next few months, so check us out at http://www.virginiawoodturners.com. Hope to see you there!

CAT’s Mentoring Program It’s Not Just For New Turners!

O ur Mentoring Coordinator, Dale Bright, is looking for volunteers to be mentors

for our CAT Mentoring Program. Dale would also like to hear from members

interested in pairing up with a mentor in any of the areas of interest listed below, or

simply for general turning skills enhancement. CAT has an enormous pool of turning

talent in its membership. Whatever your level of turning experience, working with a

mentor can be a wonderful way to explore new techniques and try out specialized

turning tools and equipment. Working as a mentor is rewarding in itself, and often

leads to enduring friendships!

Sign-up forms for those who are willing to serve as a mentor—or who would like to be

matched up with one—will be available at the next regular meeting. You may also

contact Dale Bright via email at [email protected]. Please include

your name, address, phone number, and email address; also indicate your experience

level (i.e., Beginner, Intermediate, or Experienced) when requesting a mentor.

We will try to match interested individuals with someone who lives “reasonably close”

whenever possible. Here are some of the areas of interest identified so far, but feel

free to mention others!
