ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY – YEARS 4-6 (WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK) We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.

English and maths comment provided plus an outline of next stages of

learning.

engagement and performance. Students from Years 4-6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes only. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file. The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3. No student can be identified in the results reported to schools or in any other report of the data. Last year we used the survey results to inform our schools Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan. This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 29 May to Friday 16 June. The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information or visit the Department of Education and Training website: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/management/Pages/performsurveyat.aspx.

REPORTS CONTINUED… What will reports look like? There won’t be a huge amount of change. There will still be the overview page showing a visual of where your child is performing – below, at or above level An English and Maths comment stating what your child has achieved and their next point of learning. Most importantly feedback regarding their effort and behaviour in each subject area. PIC

Specialist Comments Page: This year, Claire Furlong will be writing both a Music and an Art comment for Semester One and Two. This is doubling Claire’s report writing comments and I would like to thank her in advance for the extra work load and commitment.

Student wellbeing will always be a priority at MWHPS and as such is reflected in the way we provide feedback on a student’s attitude, effort, behaviour, persistence, manners, values, etc through a one page document in the reports.

Last but not least will be a general comment made by the classroom teacher, a student’s self-reflection and a comment made by myself or Carolyn as the leaders of the school.

We will continue to add snippets outlining the Victorian curriculum to each newsletter, so that you can develop a greater understanding of the changes to the curriculum and the impact these have on the 2017 reporting structure.

NARA VISIT This week our Year 4 students visited Nara Pre-School as part of a four week community placement project. These visits will provide students with an initial opportunity to practise their leadership skills and help others in the broader community. Not only have our students been out to Nara but the Nara kinder kids have visited our school twice this week in preparation for their transition to school. We have loved having the kinder kids out at MWHPS and enjoy building upon the strong relationship between the two educational settings. Thanks to Georgia and Helen for their lesson preparation and to Carolyn for organising this program.

THINK TANK SESSION 2 Classes were buzzing on Monday afternoon, as the Year 5/6 children taught others about 'The Habits of Mind' strategies across the Years 3-6 classes. The kids liked being mixed into different classes exploring different thinking strategies. Our student presenters prepared a power point presentation to support their lessons. Students as teachers - inspiring learning.

EXTEND HOLIDAY PROGRAM Extend have been running our holiday program for the past year and a half and have offered a great program and level of care for our students. Unfortunately our attendance numbers for the holiday program fluctuate greatly and Extend have picked up the costs associated with this loss over the past year and are unable to continue absorbing these costs. Extend had proposed dropping the holiday program (as it seemed that it was not what our community needed). School Council believes that this is a service our community needs and has negotiated with Extend ways in which to continue to offer the holiday program. However, this requires a $10 fee increase per day. With the government rebate, most families will pay between $3-5 extra per day. We acknowledge that this

[email protected]

increase may be too much for some families. Even with increasing the costs of the holiday program, numbers need to improve for it to be considered a viable program for future term breaks. Due to changes to the Extend School Holiday program, there will be a 30 minute information session on Monday 29 May at 6pm in the PAC to outline these changes, the reasons for the change, and to give all parents an opportunity to ask questions. All parents are invited to come to this information session and contribute to the discussion. HUNTINGDALE ROAD CAR PARK It is great that we have two car parks that you can access for our school. Just a reminder that if you are picking your child up from the Huntingdale road car park to please drive into the car park and not to stop on Huntingdale road. Huntingdale road can become quite busy and it carries a high volume of traffic so stopping on Huntingdale road outside the school can become quite treacherous. The safest and easiest way to pick up your child is to pull into the car park and let your children out by parking in the bays or using the drop off zone. We have now completed the signage on the Huntingdale road car park, and ask that you please only turn LEFT out of the car park. We all want to pick up our children safely from school and these small changes will allow for a safe and easy pick up. PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE A reminder to send back the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge consent form if you would like your child’s name to appear in the online Honour Roll.

Let’s celebrate A wonderful Mother’s Day Stall. Thank you to Charmaine Bacon and all the parent volunteers

who assisted on the day. So many fantastic presents and the kids thought it was the best one ever!

The P-2 teaching team for a wonderful Mother’s Day event last Friday. The P-2 students recited a gorgeous poem for the mums before they were all able to go back to the classrooms to hand their mums a special handmade gift. Scones, coffee and tea were enjoyed by our mums and special friends, whilst the students ate their snacks. It was so lovely to have over 50 parents in attendance.

15 new netbooks purchased for the senior grades. Feedback received via an email from Huntingtower PS regarding our year 5/6 students: ‘what

wonderful students you have, how polite and well-mannered they are’. Yes, they are! Senior school Choir performing with eastern region primary students at rehearsals yesterday as

they prepare for their big performance at Hamer Hall. They sound amazing! Until next week,

Nara Visits and Year 4 Community Involvement Program Nara Preschool brought their 4 year old kinder students to our school where kinder students worked in two groups with Mrs Despotellis, Helen, Mrs Morris and Mrs Reiss-Stone. The kinder students worked in our wonderful library and art room completing a variety of activities. This is a fantastic opportunity for kinder to visit us and for the kinder children and families to start to make connections with a primary school. Our Year 4 students have begun their Community Involvement Program at Nara-Preschool. This program will involve the students working with the 4 year old kinder group on a writing project. Our students work with the preschool children to write a story together. The program will not only provide our students with an authentic purpose for their writing but also offers a wonderful opportunity to go out into the community to help and share with others. At the end of the program, we will be inviting parents to join us to showcase their work, as the students and kinder students celebrate their journey and share their stories with you. The Nara Showcase will be in the last week of term and more details are to come. Physical Education NOTES:

Hi everyone!

We have been so busy at after school are this term! So far we have started our Extend cares initiative, it's sustainability!! For this we have learnt lots of new games and craft activities where we use recycled resources and play games that teach us about being environmentally friendly in a fun way! Our favourite activity so far was definitely the treasure hunt! There was treasure hidden all over the school and we had to use a school map with 'X marks the spot' to find all the treasure!! Our mums loved the plants we potted them for mothers day almost as much as we enjoyed potting them!!

AND OUR EXTEND SUPER-STAR OF THE WEEK IS.....

GISELE FROM PREP M

FOR: Helping others to make the right decisions at after school care and being willing to give everything a go, even if she's not sure if she'll like it!

. Next week is the start of our 2017 EXTEND'S GOT TALENT!!

We will be rehearsing next week, designing props and costumes and planning and designing our show and having performances the following week!!
