Auburn Principal Network Awards

Each school is asked to nominate a person or team to receive an annual award in recognition of their contribu-tion to public schools. Categories include Parent and Community; School Administration and Support Staff; Early Career Teacher; Classroom Teacher; Teacher in an Executive role; and Principal. Our awardee for this year is our Deputy Principal, Mrs Sarah Williams. We recognise Mrs Williams for her significant contributions to our school and congratulate her on receiving the Public Education Excellence Award. Citation of the award: Sarah is a highly-effective member of the school leadership team. As an outstanding Deputy Principal, Sarah is driven by a deep passion to lead teaching and learning initiatives for continuous school-wide improvement. She leads a number of whole-school projects, including High Potential and Gifted Ed-ucation, and Assessment and Curriculum. Sarah demon-strates outstanding knowledge in strategically planning for these initiatives, including analysis of school and student per-formance data and monitoring the progress of school targets. Sarah works tirelessly to plan for and lead well-aligned, pur-poseful professional learning across the school K-6, resulting in authentic learning experiences that impact positively on the quality of teaching and student learning outcomes. She devel-ops explicit systems for collaboration and feedback to sustain quality teaching practice. Sarah’s commitment to professional learning delivery has been pivotal to school improvement and the professional growth of all staff at Newington PS. The awards are usually presented at a combined ceremony for Auburn, Chullora, Parramatta and Strathfield Net-works. Due to current restrictions the award was presented to Mrs Williams by our Director, Mr John Kennedy at a 3-6 morning assembly last term.

Grade newsletters

Grade teams have prepared their grade newsletters for Term 4. The information includes English and mathemat-ics KLA focus areas for this term. The newsletters have been emailed through the e-news year lists.

2021 Student enrolment survey Last week, a digital form was pushed out through the NPS School app. It asks you to inform us as to whether your child/children will be continuing at Newington PS in 2021. Some families will already know that they are moving to another suburb, city or state in 2021. It is critical we know this information now so that our planning for classes and staffing in 2021 can be better informed. We need accurate numbers as the Department of Education will only staff schools on the actual number of students enrolled. Please complete the survey by Friday 13 No-vember. https://enews-app.com/Forms/Form/1c8953b5ff6747ae86a160075fa35e50

A message from Mrs Spink

I have had a lovely start to my new role as Deputy Principal at Newington Public School. The students have been so friendly and helpful in assisting me to find my way around the school. I am looking forward to getting to know them all during my classroom visits and am very excited to be part of the great work that happens at Newington Public School.

Selective High School 2022 (students currently in year 5)

The Selective High School [SHS] process is underway. Applications online opened Tuesday 13 October and will close Monday 16 November. There will be a general parent information session, that was initially opened to Year 5, and is now open for other grades. Usually, we encourage Stage 2 parents to attend as well to give them some understanding of this opportunity for their children that may display very high academic achievement. If you would like to attend:

It will be held via Zoom on Tuesday 27 October 6.30pm (before the P&C meeting)

To attend, please visit the link: shorturl.at/akpC2 to complete a survey and indicate your attendance to re-ceive a Zoom invite meeting code and handout

There is a limit to the number of attendees we can have on Zoom, so please enrol as soon as possible

This session will explore the background behind the selective high school (SHS) and opportunity class (OC) pro-cesses with regard to: assessment, selection , school choices, balanced decision making, and will include a Q&A if time permits.

If you are considering applying for OC or SHS for your child in the near future, OR you are currently in this pro-cess with your child, then you will find this session very helpful. Thank you and hope to see you there!

Positive Behaviour for Learning

PBL CRAZY COLOUR DAY We will be holding the School Fun Run’s Crazy Colour Day to celebrate 750 days of PBL at Newing-ton PS and as a fundraising event this year on Friday 20 November! This will help raise money for our PBL Playground Project, which will allow us to buy games and equipment for our playground.

About the Day

The Crazy Colour Day is all about fun! It will be a huge colourful mess and is undoubtably one of the most exciting days on our school’s calendar, with everyone’s participation the aim, so please make sure your child attends the day and cheers the other students on!

How Does My Child Fundraise?

Firstly, go to schoolfunrun.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fund-raising revolves around this page.

Students who raise just $10 will be able to choose a prize! The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of door knocking without adult supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The great thing about online fundraising is that you can share the link to your child’s profile with friends and fami-ly via email, SMS and Social media.

Online Fundraising

The easiest way to help your child raise money is through online fundraising, where students raise an average of $120. On top of raising more money, it’s also safer and easier than doorknocking and you don’t have to worry about handling money! To start fundraising online, go to your student profile page at schoolfunrun.com.au and share your online fundraising link.

Ordering Prizes – ALL PRIZES MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE

Please contact your school’s coordinator if this isn’t possible. Prizes MUST be ordered between the Friday 20 November and Wednesday 25 November

Simply visit schoolfunrun.com.au to create / log into your Profile Page between these dates. Then click on the ‘CLAIM YOUR PRIZE’ button and follow the prompts. If you have any questions, please contact the School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist!

If you do not want your child to participate, please complete the form below.

Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!

7 Steps to Writing Success

“Shhhhhhh!” Mrs Organ has entered the stage area. Loud breathing has filled the hall. Butter-flies are swirling in my belly. Will I be one of those students that is awarded a highly com-mended certificate in the Seven Steps to Writing Success Narrative Competition? Did you know that there were over 1900 entries into the Narrative Writing Competition? Newing-ton Public school has successfully achieved five students with a highly commended for their writ-ing. We even had one of those students receive highly commended in two writing categories.

To make this news even more exciting, Newington Public School has won a prize for the most writing competition entries from a school.

We are all extremely proud of all the students that participated in the Narra-tive Writing Competition and absolutely blown away with our highly com-mended students.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Seven Steps to Writing team: Miss Colley, Mrs Garlick and Ms Daniels on their brilliant teamwork. Without their sensational teamwork and organisation our entries would not have been delivered.

Happy writing!!

Parenting Insight

Helping kids tolerate discomfort Few right-minded people want children or young people to experience hardships or difficulty. However growing up generally means that kids will experience their fair share of hardships, frustrations and challenges which lead to uncomfortable feelings.

Exercising their discomfort muscles

Tolerating discomfort is an important resilience skill. It refers to an ability to sit with an uncomfortable or emotion-ally painful feeling such as disappointment, apprehension, nervousness or fear. These emotions can be brought about as a result of not being picked for a team; getting lower than expected marks for an assignment; or going into new, unfamiliar situation such as school camp. These are the sorts of every day situations that can make some kids feel uncomfortable. It’s helpful to think of discomfort as a ‘muscle’ that gets stronger with training. Each time a child or teen successfully tolerates discomfort they’re reinforcing their ability to do so and cementing the knowledge that they can overcome emotional challenges.

Opportunities to practise tolerating discomfort

Opportunities for practice are plentiful and are found in common situations such as when a child or teen is: feeling hungry; wanting something they can’t have; having to end screen time; contributing to household chores when they don’t feel like it; missing out on a job interview; asking someone on a date or not receiving a party invitation.

It’s not toughing it out

Tolerating discomfort doesn’t mean toughing out an unbearable situation. It’s teaching your anxious child to notice how they’re feeling, naming their emotions, and practising acceptance of difficult feelings as they occur. This is done in the knowledge that what they’re experiencing is temporary and that they’re lovingly supported by a warm and comforting adult. Couple tolerating discomfort with social rewards (such as words of praise or shared fun ac-tivity) for coping behaviours and you’re helping to build their personal resilience.
